duo recital Feb. 25

BEMIDJI — Bemidji

State vocal professor Jennifer Olson will perform a duo recital alongside baritone Adam Giebner, choir director at Grand Rapids High School, and accompanist Dan Will at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Thompson Recital Hall in BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

The concert will feature duo and solo works by composers Andrew Lloyd Webber, Giacomo Puccini, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Schumann, Ernani Braga, Maurice Ravel and Peter Cavell.

The event is free to the public.

Ski and snowboarding lessons available at Buena Vista

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will host beginner skiing and snowboarding lessons from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, and March 3, at Buena Vista Ski Area, 19600 Irvine Ave.

The cost is $77 per person and the package includes a lift ticket, ski or board rental package, a helmet and a one-hour group rental.

Participants will be with instructors from 2 to 3 p.m. and then have free time to practice without an instructor from 3 to 6 p.m. Participants must be 7 years or older.

Clearwater County Historical Society to hold membership meeting

SHEVLIN — The Clearwater County Historical Society will host its annual membership meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the History Center, located at 264 First St. in Shevlin.

The meeting will begin with the election of one new board member and officers and then go into a business meeting. Following the business meeting, attendees will participate in a discussion of the WPA programs in Clearwater County in the 1930s. Light refreshments will be served and everyone is

Parks and Rec offering ‘Love My Pup’ kits

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Bemidji K9 program, is offering ‘Love My Pup’ kits at the Tourist Information Center, while supplies last. Each pack includes a backpack, dog treats, supplies for two t-shirt dog toy crafts, supplies for a paw print ornament and a dog treat recipe book, a release said. The cost is $20 per pack. Growing Our Future spring gardening kits now available

BEMIDJI — Growing Our Future, a community program based in Bemidji that supplies free seasonal gardening kits to local youth, is now offering its spring 2024 round of gardening kits.

The Growing Our Future program wasfounded by Bemidji resident Bridget Westrum in 2021and began by giving out free “starter garden” kits that included everything from detailed planting information to seeds and soil. All youth ages 18 and younger are eligible to receive a kit.

This year’s kits will include 10 varieties of seeds, a seed starting mix, a plastic (reusable) cell tray, a Biodegradable cell tray, a bottom tray (to catch water), a spray bottle, plant labels and a gardening gift of the child’s

choosing, a release said.

They will be available for pickup Feb. 26 or March 1-2. Those interested can select the day that works best and select it on this entry form: https://forms.gle/ kBSpC4y7QvYvtYKX7.

“Remember, we are 100% donation-funded and volunteer-run and our kits are available while supplies last,” Westrum said in a release. “Please consider making a donation to our organization so we can keep these kits available to area youth.”

Defensive Driving Refresher Courses scheduled

BEMIDJI — Defensive

Driving Refresher Courses will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, through Zoom.

The four-hour refresher courses are for drivers age 55 and older who have already had an eight-hour beginner’s course and want to continue receiving a discount on their insurance. The instructor for the classes will be retired Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Mike Flatley.

Jean Kruft to present at HCLL

PARK RAPIDS — Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning will kick off its spring 2024 series with Jean Kruft’s presentation on Ojibwe art manufacturing at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at The Event Room, 1104 Park Ave. S in Park Rapids. Kruft will share how she used an inheritance to start Bam’idizowigamig Creator’s Place, a unique manufacturing center employing more than 20 Ojibwe adults from the Pine Point area just 20 miles from Park Rapids, a release said.

“Hear the story and see a display of beautiful art being produced at Bam’idizowigamig Creator’s Place,” added the release.

This program is open to the public, free of charge and handicap accessible.

Mobile food drop set for Feb. 26 in Bagley BAGLEY — North

Country Food Bank is partnering with the United Way of Bemidji Area and the Clearwater County Food Shelf to offer a mobile food distribution from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 26, along Great Northern Drive SW. Weather permitting, food will be available from 11 a.m. to noon, or until food runs out.

Compos to present at BSU’s Mental Health Speaker event

Compos will present on mental health stigma at Bemidji State University’s Mental Health Speaker event at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in BSU’s Beaux Arts Ballroom.

Compos will discuss how stigma, cultural norms and a lack of education affected him and

how through help-seeking, education and a strong support network he has grown from being his own worst enemy to a powerful participant in his recovery, a release said.

Compos is a social worker, father, husband, mental health advocate and suicide-attempt survivor. He is a founding member and president of the Pensacola State College Active Minds chapter and worked at the Crisis Action Referral Effort for Students at Pensacola State.

After receiving his associate’s degree in social work from Pensacola State, he moved to Raleigh, N.C., where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from North Carolina State University, with a goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker.

Active Minds is a

Beltrami County Master Gardeners to host Spring Garden Party

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Master Gardeners will host a spring garden party with the doors opening at 7:45 a.m. and the meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Evangelical Free Church, 115 Carr Lake Road SW.

The program will open with Joe Bergeson, thirdgeneration owner of Bergeson Nursery in Fertile, Minn. He will speak about “Roses and Hydrangea for the North” and give tips on selecting the right varieties and how to make them thrive in our northern climate.

Local pollinator expert Bonny Siegford will speak about “Selecting and Growing Native Plants for Beauty and Pollinators.” Over ten years ago, Bonny designed a large native plant garden at her home which contains more than 70 varieties of Minnesota’s native flowering herbaceous forbs, trees, and shrubs, a release said.

Lastly, Shannon Reyes, current University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener intern for Beltrami County, will speak about “Countertop Gardening,” focusing on tips for making the most of gardening in small spaces. Door prizes will be given and refreshments will be provided, including rolls from Raphael’s Bakery and Cafe. The cost is $20 per person. Watermark to host reception, workshop

BEMIDJI — Watermark

Art Center will host a reception for exhibiting artist Tosa Two Heart from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at Watermark, 505 Bemidji Avenue N.

Two Heart’s exhibit, “Wobliheca - The energy to create,” is currently on display through May 10 in Watermark’s Miikanan Gallery.

Two Heart will also teach a four-part workshop on the basics of fashion design for adults.

The workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, March 9 to 30, via Zoom.

Beginning students will be introduced to garment design and approaches to creating a collection using online tools using their own digital devices.

Personalized finished designs will be uploaded and applied to customized garments. In addition, attendees will learn tips and tricks of photoshoots, a release said.

The workshop is for ages 15 and up. The cost is $40 for the entire series and scholarships are available.

Prospective students are encouraged to attend the reception on March 2, the release said. The reception is free and open to the public.

Two Heart is an Oglala Lakota textile artist. She composes futuristic digital designs intended to be printed on clothing with the wearer in mind. Her strong, colorful designs have been modeled in Native Max Magazine and the Hamiinat magazine.

Headwaters Music and Arts to host weekly artist circle

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts is set to host a second session of its artist circle from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 5, to April 9, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

“Participants will create a series of projects (different from the 2023 session) using the circle as a focal design element, and will explore and learn new techniques using pencils, paints, inks and dyes on multiple surfaces,” a release said. “The finished projects will be beautiful pieces of art to give as gifts or keep to enjoy.”

Area artist Mary Therese will lead the

program. Therese has more than 30 years of experience as a professional artist and holds fine arts degrees in painting, printmaking and art education. She is a mural artist and surface designer on fabric.

The program is geared toward teenagers and adults of all skill levels, the release said.

The cost to attend is $200 for non-members and $180 for members. The program is limited to 10 participants and the registration deadline is Friday, March 1.

Gunderson Academy offering laser target shooting tournament

BEMIDJI — Adam Gunderson of Gunderson Academy of Excellence

Firearms Training is offering a tournament for simulated target shooting on Thursdays through Feb. 29 at the American Legion Post 16 in Bagley, 112 Main Ave N.

Participants pay $20 each week and receive a free drink chip. Scoring is based on time, hits, misses and accuracy, a release said.

At the end of the fiveweek tournament, high scorers will receive gift certificates. Gunderson will start another fiveweek round if there is enough interest, as well

as a possible youth league for ages 12 to 17. Anyone is welcome to participate. Gunderson has been the owner and operator of the laser shooting system since 2019. The system has simulators from Competition, Skills Drills, Skeet, Trap Shooting, Hunting, Wild West Quickdraw and other fun games, the release said. BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host an Open Mic and CoffeeHouse featuring Caleigh at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. The Northern

Minnesota trio Caleigh presents a fusion of world folk, Celtic, bluegrass, American OldTime, original compositions and folk music. Caleigh has shared their 29-year musical journey with audiences throughout Minnesota and fans worldwide via the Internet, a release said.

“Caleigh is a Minnesota band whose sound is earthy and eclectic,” the release added. “Graced with harp, fiddle, bodhran, banjo, accordion, guitars, mandolin, congas, viola, contra bass and captivating vocals, Caleigh’s music will inspire the imagination of listeners as they travel through a time-honored musical experience.”

The band has released five albums on the Lily Label.

Held on the first Friday of most months, the Headwaters Open Mic

offers a welcoming and supportive community for musicians and spoken-word performers. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to sign up for a 10 to 15 minute set. Bemidji Public Library to host ‘Seed Starting’ event

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library is set to host a seed starting event with Master Gardener Dan Sherman at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the library, 509 America Ave.

Sherman has been gardening since he was 12 years old and will share his experience starting plants indoors from seeds, a release said.

Participants will learn about selecting seed, soil and containers, dates to start, lighting and heating, disease prevention and preparing for transplanting.

The event is free and open to the public.

Bemidji Area FGBF set to meet March 2

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship of

America chapter is set to meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, in the Beltrami Electric Conference Room, 4111 Technology Drive NW.

A light breakfast will be served and all are welcome to attend.

The keynote speaker will be Steven Eastridge. Eastridge’s testimony will share about influential people along the way who demonstrated love, life before knowing Christ, the moment he surrendered his life to Christ and how life has changed since accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior, a release said.

In August 2017, Eastridge created Up North Canvas Company out of his garage with the help of a coworker, staff at Bemidji Marine, his family, a sewing machine and a few materials.

“Over the past 6 years, Up North Canvas Company has expanded into a full-time operation serving a variety of local

businesses and has built a foundation centered around Jesus Christ focusing on serving people of this community and surrounding area by offering genuine advice, producing quality products and building lifelong relationships with customers,” the release said. Eastridge and his family are members of the Bemidji Evangelical Covenant Church and are involved in a variety of volunteer and programming opportunities.

BSU to offer free federal and state tax preparation

BEMIDJI — Bemidji State University’s Department of Accountancy is again offering free federal and state tax preparation and eFiling to the public.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, through April 10, in BSU Memorial Hall room 250. There will be no service on March 6 due to spring

break. No appointment is necessary, but the last walkin is accepted no later than 5:30 p.m. This free service is sponsored by the IRS.

Northern Minnesota’s Women’s Expo set for May 10-11

BEMIDJI — Northern Minnesota’s Largest Women’s Expo will be held on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.

This event will feature numerous vendors, demonstrations, wine tasting, selfie stations, a pop-up thrift store, a panel of women in business and a keynote speaker, a release said. The entrance fee will cost $5, with 80% of the fee being donated to the Northwoods Battered

Women’s Shelter’s capital campaign. “All donations will go towards our capital campaign (to build a new shelter),” Michelle Carlson, assistant director of the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter, said in the release. “Building a new shelter offers privacy, dignity, and a chance to work toward moving on from intimate partner violence for our participants. It will also allow us to double the capacity of participants we can help.”

In previous years, this event has featured vendors such as florists, jewelers, fitness groups, yoga studios, spas, travel advisors, financial advisors, home improvement specialists, boutiques, photographers and more.
