BEMIDJI — Holiday Gifts for Kids, a program of the United Way of Bemidji Area, is in the middle of its annual effort to ensure that all children in need this season and who live in the Bemidji area receive a gift. Holiday Gifts for Kids is a program intended to help parents or guardians who are financially unable to provide a gift for their child. This program is available to families with children ages newborn to 17 who live in Beltrami, Clearwater or Hubbard Counties, a
release said. New, unwrapped gifts are being collected until Monday, Dec. 9, at these locations: First National Bank of Bemidji (main branch only), L & M Fleet, Menards, Walgreens, Bemidji Ambulance, MJB Home Center and the Tourist Information Center. Gift distribution will take place in Laporte from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church Laporte, 150 Second St. NE, and in Bemidji from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, at the
Sanford Center. Gifts are only available for children whose parents have pre-registered and meet the program’s guidelines, which are detailed on the registration form.
The registration deadline for the Laporte area is Tuesday, Dec. 3. Registration forms are available for pick-up and dropoff at Trinity Lutheran Church Laporte and Laporte Public School.

Great River Rescue to hold ‘Santa Paws’ pet photo fundraiser
BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue is set to hold a “Santa Paws” pet photo fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, at the shelter, 1612 Carr Lake Rd. SE.
Attendees can enjoy hot chocolate and cookies while waiting to get their photo taken by Image Photography. Participants are welcome to bring their dogs, cats and small animals, a release said.
Photo packages start at $20 and all proceeds will go to Great River, added the release.

Headwaters Music and Arts offering adult pottery program
BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts is offering an Adult Pottery Program throughout the year from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.
This open studio-style program is for all skill levels and includes supervision and individualized instruction. Participants can expect to practice using coil, slab, and pinch methods; learn paint and glaze techniques; and receive an introduction to wheel throwing, a release said. A subscription to the Monday or Wednesday Adult Pottery Program also gives participants access to monthly social gatherings with other adult pottery members and select open pottery hours.
Open pottery is selfdirected studio time in Headwaters Pottery Studio to practice techniques. While no formal instruction is provided during open pottery hours, volunteer studio hosts will be in attendance to give support and encouragement. Open pottery hours are held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and 4 to 6
p.m. on Fridays.
First-time participants in the Adult Pottery Program will receive a complimentary 12.5 pounds of clay when they first sign up. After that, clay can be purchased through Headwaters Music and Arts. Only clay purchased through Headwaters can be fired at Headwaters. Firing and glaze are all provided free of charge. The cost to participate is $100 per person or $90 for Headwaters members. Headwaters offers financial assistance options for all of its adult and youth programming to ensure accessibility for all. Space for the program is limited; advance registration is required.

WILDVIEW concert set for Nov. 30 at Rail River Folk School
BEMIDJI — Local rock band WILDVIEW will perform in concert on Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW in Bemidji.
The show will also feature guest bands EXILES and Foxby. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30. WILDVIEW will take the stage at 9.
Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $10 for ages 16 and under. A cash bar will be provided by Brigid’s Pub.
Formed in 2017, WILDVIEW features Matt Jensen, Bennet Aube, Paul Olson, Erik Jensen and Brent Gilge.

Bemidji Area FGBF set to meet Dec. 7
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship of America chapter is set to meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Beltrami Electric Conference Room, 4111 Technology Drive NW. A light breakfast will be served and all are welcome to attend.
The keynote speaker will be Ryan O’Leary. His testimony will focus on his ministry work with Indigenous groups in North America.
O’Leary is a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe in northern Minnesota. He grew up playing hockey and eventually played at the University of Denver and was drafted to play professionally by the Calgary Flames in the fourth round back in his draft year, a release said.
Along with his hockey background, O’Leary has an extensive ministry background and has served as a lead pastor for two congregations for a total of 13 years. He currently works for a global missions organization and leads two ministries based out of Bemidji.
O’Leary leads a ministry called the First Peoples Initiative, which involves developing a ministry to all of the First Peoples groups in North America. According to the release, there are around 9.5 million tribal members in the U.S. and about another 2 million First Nations people in Canada.
He also serves as president of the National Association of Native Evangelicals and serves on the National Association of Evangelicals board of directors based in Washington D.C.
O’Leary and his
family reside in Bemidji. He has been married to his wife Kristen for over 21 years and has four children.

‘Mayaadaaboonojig / The Ones Drifting Off on the Current’ exhibit to open at Watermark
BEMIDJI — A birch bark canoe will be on
display in an exhibit titled, “Mayaadaaboonojig / The Ones Drifting Off on the Current,” opening Dec. 5 at Watermark Art Center.
For the canoe build, Watermark partnered with Oshki Manidoo, a White Earth operated recovery center located in Bemidji. Oshki Manidoo provided space where youth and staff were able to watch and participate in various aspects of assembling the canoe, a release said.
Zac Earley, a gifted artist and Ojibwe culture keeper, was the lead for the project. His experience with community canoe builds and his work as a traditions keeper made him a good candidate to bring into the wellness space. Additional pieces created by Earley will be on display in this exhibit.
Earley brought in Arden Williams to assist
with the build. Her extraordinary talent as an artist meshed well with Earley’s. Their energy and heart given to the project resulted in an exceptionally beautiful canoe that honors the stories of the Ojibwe people, the release said.
The title of this exhibit encompasses the journey taken for this meaningful accomplishment. In the release, Watermark thanked everyone at Oshki Manidoo, White Earth Nation Behavioral Health and Language and Culture Program that supported and contributed to the project.
The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 11 in Watermark’s Miikanan Gallery. The canoe will return to Oshki Manidoo following the exhibit and a water launch will be held next spring.

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host an Open Mic and CoffeeHouse featuring Serotiny at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.
Serotiny (ser-oughtknee), until now known as The Swivets, is the region’s only women-powered alternative original band, a release said.
Featuring the songwriting of Lisa Mattson along with haunting harmonic arrangements from NikkiLee Nolden and Casey Grangruth, the group has delivered indie-pop sensitivity and verve to stages across northern Minnesota, including Bemidji’s Watermark Art Festival and the Historic Chief Theater in support of nationally touring bluegrass band Monroe Crossing.

Blackduck Senior Center to hold omelet brunch, bake and craft sale
BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck Senior Center will host an omelet brunch, bake and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at the senior center, 24 First St. SE.
“Join us and build your own Omelet while you watch our chefs cook them,” a release said. The omelets will be served with juice, coffee, and toast or a sweet roll. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger.
The center will also hold a raffle drawing for king-sized quilts at noon. All funds raised from this event will go toward maintaining the Senior Center, the release said.
