Bethel Child Care Center joins Child and Adult Care Food Program

BEMIDJI — Bethel Child Care Center recently announced its participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

According to a release, CACFP aims to improve the diets of young children and increase the opportunity for children to eat a variety of nutritious foods. Meals meet nutrition standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Friends of the Bemidji Public Library offering 18th annual Holiday Gift Tree

BEMIDJI — The Friends of the Bemidji Public Library is offering its 18th annual Holiday Gift Tree, and tax-deductible donations are being accepted through Saturday, Dec. 28.

Patrons to the library are encouraged to choose an ornament that designates the amount they’d like to give and category of book their donation will buy.

Participants should place the ornament and a check in the provided envelope and give it to the librarian behind the counter, a release said.

Faith in Action hosting

‘Community Angel’ donation drive HACKENSACK — Faith in Action is again offering a “Community Angel” donation drive this holiday season.

Donations made to Faith in Action before the holidays are over will qualify for an ornament on the Angel Tree in the

organization’s Hackensack office. Donors will have the option to dedicate these ornaments in honor or memory of a loved one, and their dedications will be written on the ornaments.

“By making a donation to Faith in Action in support of volunteer services, you can be an angel to many others in your community,” a release said.

According to the release, so far in 2024, 110 Faith in Action volunteers have served 344 people throughout Cass County,

primarily older adults and families in need.

These volunteers provided 2,138 rides, delivered over 3,500 home meals to rural areas, spent over 310 hours in friendly visiting and telephone reassurance and over 700 hours building ramps and helping with chores and home modifications to help people stay in their homes and communities.

BEMIDJI — Bemidji Contra Dance will host a community contra dance at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.

Contra dancing is a lively, traditional social dance that originated in New England and is now done all over the United States, a release said.

The community is invited to dance to live music by Leatherwood of Bemidji with calling by Wendy Greenburg, the release said.

Everything is taught by the caller and experience or partners will not be necessary. All ages are welcome.

A free-will donation of $5 to $10 is suggested but any amount is accepted.

A potluck will be held before the dance starting at 5:30 p.m.

Organizers request that participants do not bring dishes containing nuts, the release said.

Evangelical Covenant Church to host Carols and Candles concert

BEMIDJI — The Evangelical Covenant Church will host a Carols and Candles concert featuring pianist Lois Simonson at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the church, 5405 Hart Lane NW.

The concert will include a variety of Christmas carols presented by the church’s First Service Worship Team instrumentalists. Attendees will also get a chance to sing some carols.

An offering for the Bemidji Community Food Shelf will be accepted at the entrance; food items or monetary gifts are appreciated, a release said.

Mobile food drop set for Dec. 16 in Bagley

BAGLEY — North Country Food Bank is partnering with the United Way of Bemidji Area and the Clearwater County Food Shelf to offer a mobile food distribution from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Dec. 16, along Great Northern Drive SW in Bagley. Food will be available from 11 a.m. to noon, or until food runs out.

At the events, people can drive up and receive

food. Attendees should be mindful not to block driveways, a release said. Those receiving food will be asked to identify themselves and answer a few simple household questions by staff from North Country Food Bank. Red Door Book Store to offer extended hours Dec. 17

BEMIDJI — The Red Door Book Store in the Bemidji Public Library will be open until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17, for holiday shopping at the library, 509 America Ave NW.

The Red Door has many gift options, including used Christmas gift books, CDs and movies, a

release said. The used book selection also includes Children, Young Adult, Fiction, Non-Fiction and Biography categories.

“There are books for everyone on your shopping list,” added the release.

A large portion of the proceeds from the Red Door are donated to the public library to add to their collection.

BEMIDJI — Ruby’s Pantry will offer a mobile food distribution beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE. At the event, people can

drive up and receive a grocery bundle for a $25 cash donation. Exact change is preferred. There is no income or residency requirement to receive food. Participants should bring baskets or boxes for shares to be put in their vehicle, a release said.

Pre-pay for shares is available and can be purchased at rubyspantry. org. Pre-payers choose a time slot to pick up their share. The deadline to pre-pay is 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

BEMIDJI — Watermark Art Center’s Spoken Word Series presents “Snow Day! Your True Stories Told Live” as the theme for the Dec. 19 StorySLAM to be held at Bemidji Brewing, 211 America Ave. NW.

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will hold the winter block of its eight-session Music and Movement led by music teacher Sarah Leach from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 26, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

An exploratory group class, Music and Movement introduces young learners to the world of music through fun songs, engaging movement and hands-on experience with a variety of instruments, a release said.

BEMIDJI — Bagpiper

John Egelhof will hold beginner bagpipe interest group meetings from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N.

United Way’s Housing Trust Fund program pre-application now open

The United Way of Bemidji Area, in collaboration with Beltrami County, has opened a pre-application for construction and development projects as part of the Housing Trust Fund program.

The United Way invites qualified entities, including for-profit organizations, nonprofits and government agencies, to submit proposals for projects aimed at expanding and improving local housing options. These proposals

may encompass a wide range of initiatives, including construction, development, rehabilitation and other innovative solutions, a release said.

“By participating, you have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the quality of life for residents and play a vital role in shaping the future of our community,” explained the release.

The Housing Trust Fund is designed to support housing programs that enhance housing

availability, affordability and accessibility for individuals and families in Beltrami County. The aim is to create a positive impact on the housing landscape and improve the overall well-being of our community members, the release said.

Interested developers are encouraged to review the application eligibility requirements and submit their pre-application before the deadline. Submission of a pre-application does not guarantee

funding. Applications will be reviewed, and applicants will be notified whether they are invited to proceed or declined.

Law Enforcement Scholarship Program

BELTRAMI COUNTY

— Applications are now open for this year’s Law Enforcement Scholarship Program through the Minnesota Sheriff’s Association Board of Directors.

“These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 sheriffs of the state of Minnesota,” a release said.

Up to 18 scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded this year, the release said.

The scholarship committee, in making its selection of awards, intends

on achieving representation from all geographical areas of the state.

“The MSA Board of Directors acknowledges the current challenges in recruiting and greatly appreciates the individuals that make the decision to serve others through a career in law enforcement,” said Executive Director James Stuart, in the release. “This is one way that we can support that honorable decision.”

Scholarships are only available to students

currently enrolled in a mandated POST Skills Program, in their second year of a two-year law enforcement program, or in their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

In order to qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at www.mnsheriffs.org.

Headwaters Music and Arts offering adult pottery program

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts is offering

an Adult Pottery Program throughout the year from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. This open studio-style program is for all skill levels and includes supervision and individualized instruction. Participants can expect to practice using coil, slab, and pinch methods; learn paint and glaze techniques; and receive an introduction to wheel throwing, a release said.

Open pottery is selfdirected studio time in Headwaters Pottery Stu dio to practice techniques.

While no formal instruction is provided during open pottery hours, volunteer studio hosts will be in attendance to give support and encouragement. Open pottery hours are held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and 4 to 6 p.m. on Fridays. First-time participants in the Adult Pottery Program will receive a complimentary 12.5 pounds of clay when they first sign
