Harmony Foods to hold Customer Appreciation Day

BEMIDJI — Harmony Natural Foods Co-op will host a Customer Appreciation Day event on its 47th anniversary, Sunday, April 21, at Harmony Foods, 302 Irvine Ave. The event will feature giveaways, kids activities, sampling and more.

Children’s activities will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Harmony’s community kitchen.

Attendees will learn about Earth Day and the importance of recycling, a release said.

Sampling featuring local and co-op brands will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The annual ownership meeting will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Harmony Co-op owners are welcome to come and learn more about the co-op’s initiatives, accomplishments and future projects.

Owners who submit their Board of Director ballots by April 21 will be entered to win one of two $50 gift cards. The drawing will be held at the ownership meeting. Owners who attend the annual meeting will also be entered for a chance to win one of four $25 gift cards, the release said. There will be a 10% off discount on items in the store for Customer Appre ciation Day.

Additionally, anyone who becomes a Harmony Co-op owner during the month of April will receive a free Harmony Co-op Klean Kanteen and will be automatically entered to win one of two $50 gift cards.

Bemidji American Swedish Institute to host meeting

BEMIDJI — The Bemi dji American Swedish Institute will host its annual meeting at 3 p.m.

on Sunday, April 21, at the Swedish Camp at Concordia Language Villages, 8607 Thorsonveien Road NE. Attendees will elect officers for the coming year, along with any other business. At 3:30 p.m., Lyndon Johnson will perform Swedish songs and tell stories. A potluck meal will follow the entertainment. Participants should arrive promptly and consider serving on the board, a release said.

First City Squares 2023-2024 dance schedule

Bemidji State to hold Community Partner

Meet-and-Greet

BEMIDJI — Bemidji

State University will host a Community Partner Meet-and-Greet networking event and servicelearning information session from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at the Mayflower Building in downtown Bemidji.

BSU and Northwest Technical College’s service-learning program exists to create community engagement opportunities in the Bemidji community and to provide personal and academic growth to BSU and NTC students, a release said.

Attendees can enjoy food and door prizes. All community partners and organizations are invited to attend and are encouraged to bring materials to share with others.

Bemidji Senior Center to hold Earth Day event

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will host an Earth Day Games and Goodies event from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Monday, April 22, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

”We are inviting the community to join us for this free event of playing games with treats and coffee,” a release said.

Junior and senior high students from Voyageurs Expeditionary School will collaborate with the center for this event.

”This is a great opportunity for elders and students to interact in a meaningful way,” added the release.

Bagley Community Theater to hold auditions for ‘Footloose’ BAGLEY — The Bagley Community Theater will hold auditions for “Footloose” from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at the Bagley High School Auditorium, 1130 Main Ave. N.

The Bagley Theater is seeking actors for this high-energy musical filled with some of America’s favorite characters and songs, a release said. The cast includes 12 to 15 young adult actors ranging from ages 15 to 25 and 12 to 15 adult actors over age 25.

Auditioners should prepare a short monologue or reading and approximately 32 bars of an uptempo song. No experience is necessary and adults of all experience and ability levels may try out.

”Cut loose, Footloose, kick off your Sunday shoes and join the fun,” the release said. This is an open audition so no appointment is necessary; participants will fill out a form when they arrive.

Rehearsals begin April 29 and will be two evenings per week for most actors. More rehearsals will be added starting in June, the release said. Individuals who are not able to make it to one of the audition days can email director Marilyn Hood at mjhoods@gmail. com to arrange an alternative audition format, such as a digital submission. Additional questions can also be sent to the above email.

Parks and Rec to hold Basic Life Support classes

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will hold Basic Life Support

classes from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays, April 22, May 13 and Aug. 12, at BSU’s Gillett Wellness Center. This class is geared toward pre-hospital providers such as EMTs, paramedics, firefighters and in-facility hospital providers. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.

During this class participants will learn:

• High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants

The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components

Important early use of an AED

• Effective ventilations using a barrier device

Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR

• Relief of foreign-body

airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

The course takes approximately 4.5 hours to complete. Course time is based on one instructor, six students and two manikins.

Beltrami County Emergency Management to offer Skywarn training

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office’s Emergency Management Office and the National Weather Service will host a Skywarn training at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, at the Emergency Operations Center in the Law Enforcement Center, 613 Minnesota Ave NW.

Skywarn is a severe weather spotter training program that instructs the public on how to safely observe and report severe weather. Spotters provide critical information to the National Weather Service, enhancing public safety by providing ground truth and observations that radars can’t always see, a release said.

Mt. Zion Church to host Family Enrichment classes

BEMIDJI — Family Enrichment classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, at Mt. Zion Church, 414 Lincoln Ave.

In a rosemaling class for ages 12 and older, participants will use C- and S-shaped brush strokes to create scroll and flowing lines, floral designs and both subtle and vibrant colors, a release said. ”Scandinavian ancestors brought the art of rosemaling to the United States,” the release said. “Join us for a fun, relaxed experience into this popular folk art.”

Mike Ohl will teach a “learning to draw, drawing to learn class” for ages 8 and older. Participants will explore creative lessons and exercises, allowing them to develop greater skills and confidence in their draw-

ing abilities. ”Everyone at one time used drawing to explore and describe their world,” the release said. “In our digital world, drawing perhaps is needed more than ever. Visual thinking skills are best learned through drawing, a critical ability in almost every walk of life.”

All supplies are provided, but participants should bring a painting shirt, the release said. Children must have an adult family member present.

BEMIDJI — The Living Hope Support Group for depression will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 23, May 7 and May 21, in the Lueken’s North conference room, 1171 Paul Bunyan Drive NW.

This group is open to anyone who is living with depression or any other mental health challenge, a release said.

Funtastic Dance Follies set for April 25-27

BEMIDJI — The annual Funtastic Dance Follies show will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April 27, at the BSU Gymnasium. There will also be a matinee show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. ”Spring has sprung and with that is the annual Bemidji State University Funtastic Dance Follies,” a release said.

Performers will include Bemidji State students, alumni and community members. Tickets for the shows will be available at the door.

Admission is free for children 2 and under, $5 for youth general admission, $10 for adult general admission, free for Bemidji State students and $5 for Bemidji State alumni and senior citizens.

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center will host a book and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at the center, 216 Third St. NW. The sale will feature book donations along with homemade baked goods. Attendees can also enjoy a book nook and a children’s reading space, a release said.

All proceeds will support the senior center.

Defensive Driving Refresher Courses scheduled

Driving Refresher Courses will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, through Zoom. The four-hour refresher courses are for drivers age 55 and older who have already had an eight-hour beginner’s course and want to continue receiving a discount on their insurance. Poetry SLAM Live set for April 25

BEMIDJI — Watermark

Art Center’s 2023 Spoken Word Series continues with Poetry SLAM at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, at Fozzie’s Smokin Bar-B-Q, 114 Third St. NW.

”A poetry slam is a competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges,” a release said. “While formats can vary, slams are often loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery.”

Poets should prepare three original SLAM poems, one for each of the three rounds. Poems must be under three minutes of reading time; notes are allowed.

Judges, selected from the audience, give each reading a score on a scale of 1 to 10. The poets with the highest scores move forward to a second, then third round. The top three in the final round win cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25.

There is no charge to participate or to watch Watermark Poetry Slam events.

BEMIDJI — Bemidji’s Sunrise Rotary Club will hold a shred event for individuals and businesses to safely dispose of confidential paper materials at a low cost.

The shredder truck will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in the parking lot of the Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area, 1600 Minnesota Ave. NW. For $10 each, boxes can be dropped off at this location and volunteers will dispose of them, a release said.

Funds raised will go toward giving personal dictionaries to all third graders in Bemidji area elementary schools, funding a local Rotary scholarship for high school

Contra dance set for April 27

BEMIDJI — Bemidji Contra Dance will host a community contra dance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.

Contra dancing is a lively, traditional social dance that originated in New England. A potluck will be held before the dance, starting at 5 p.m. The community is invited to bring a dish to share and stay and dance to live music by Four Mile Portage of Duluth, with calling by David Kirchner.

Everything is taught by the caller and experience or partners will not be necessary. A free-will donation of $5-10 is suggested but not required.

CLEARBROOK — Living Local Women will host Mary Spaulding’s presentation “Perennial Gardens - Secrets to Enduring Design and Plants” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the City of Clearbrook classroom, 200 Elm St. SW.

Spaulding will share basic information on perennial plants and how to design and create a perennial garden that will thrive for many years, a release said.

A Master Gardener since 1992, Spaulding is a “wealth of information

and experience,” added the release. She is behind the design and beauty of many perennial gardens in the area, including those at the Sanford Bagley Hospital. There is no cost to attend. This workshop is made possible through a grant from the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.

Clearwater Lutheran Church to hold concert, dinner event

SHEVLIN — The Clearwater County Historical Society and Clearwater Lutheran Church will host a meal and concert event on Saturday, April 27, at Clearwater Lutheran Church, 186 Second St. W., in Shevlin. Participants will enjoy an evening of good food, music and stories, a release said. The event will include a dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a concert by Renee Vaughan at 7 p.m. Vaughan will take the stage offering “Folk Music and the Nordic Newcomers: First generation Scandinavian immigrant musicians to Clearwater County and greater Minnesota.”

”During the mid to late 1800s, Minnesota became the chosen homeland for thousands of Scandinavian immigrants, including some of the most skilled musicians from their villages,” the release said. “Back in the old country, these musicians’ legacies live on and their favorite tunes continue to be played.” Vaughan’s presentation will highlight the lives of these immigrants, including a few who immigrated to Minerva in Clearwater County and Solway in the late 1800s. This is the third annual

dinner and concert program offered by the Clearwater County Historical Society and the Clearwater Lutheran church.

A free-will donation will be accepted for both events. Proceeds from the evening will support church and historical society activities.

Red Thread infuses their interpretations of traditional music with a harmonic sensibility rooted in and liberated from classical choral singing. Band members

Sarah Larsson, Sophie Javna, Erika Lantz, Julia Hobart, Colleen Bertsch and McKain Lakey each draw from years of study with master artists including Ethel Raim, Michael Alpert, Sam Lee, Dáithí Sproule and string band master artists in Transylvania, a release said.

Red Thread further unspools the line of folk tradition, merging rich vocal and string arrangements with the stories of real people’s lived experiences embedded within folk songs,” the release said.

P.E.O. Chapter EX accepting applications for Julie Campbell Ringle Scholarship

Chapter EX is accepting applications for the Julie Campbell Ringle Memorial Scholarship through April 30.

To be considered for the $2,000 scholarship, an applicant must have completed one academic year in a post-secondary institution toward a qualifying health care field of study.

Applicants must also be a woman from the Bemidji area, have graduated from a Bemidji school or be currently living in Bemidji and committed to a career in the area, a release said.

The scholarship was established in memory of Julie Ringle, a former oncology nurse, volunteer Girl Scout leader and P.E.O. Chapter EX president. Shortly after her death in an automobile accident in 1993, the chapter began building a scholarship fund for a woman planning on a career in health care, the release said. John Egelhof will hold beginner bagpipe interest group meetings from 6 to

7 p.m. on Tuesdays, at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N. Attendees should be interested in Celtic/Gaelic bagpipe music and learning this storied instrument, a release said.

Participants must have a hand size sufficient to cover the holes on a practice instrument, called a practice chanter. Attendees must obtain a practice chanter and tutor book to begin learning. Limited tutoring will be available during the meeting. Egelhof has been a member of the New Hampshire Law Enforcement Association Pipes and Drums, taught at the Headwaters School of Music and Arts and played with local bands. Summer Theater Day Camp set for June 3-14

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department and Bemidji Community Theater will hold Summer Theater Day Camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, June 5-16.

During the day camp, participants will be placed in a camp section based on their age, interest and performance experience. Skill sections include basic stagecraft, advanced performance, script-writing, musical theater and tech and set design, a release said.

BEMIDJI — The Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program to offer after school meals to kids at the club. Free meals will be provided to all enrolled children. Meals will meet nutritional standards established by the USDA, a release said. Meals will be offered from 2:40 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select days off. The program will end on May 31, 2024.

Community Table offers sit-down meals

BEMIDJI — Mt. Zion and United Methodist Churches of Bemidji offer sit-down Community Table meals on Mondays through Thursdays. The doors open at 4:40 p.m. with meals being served from 5 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays at Mt. Zion and Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Methodist Church.
