When you’re considering how to create your dream outdoor oasis, there are endless options and additions to consider. To help you navigate the latest pool design trends, Tristan Lott speaks with Anthony Lestani, National Sales Manager of the SPASA 2019 Product of the Year Award winner, Sunbather, about the latest in environmentally friendly pool solutions. THE LOW DOWN In today’s climate, more pool owners are looking for ways to save energy and water, therefore using a pool cover to retain heat and reduce evaporation. The National Construction Code has also recently introduced a new code that states a pool cover is a mandatory requirement where a new pool has either a gas heater or heat pump installed, even if the pool also has a solar heater. This coupled with dry conditions throughout Victoria, means pool owners are more than ever seeking ways to reduce water loss from their pool. As the desire for more pool owners to cover their pool increases so too does the need to have a roller. While the need to have a roller is there, many don’t want to look at, or work around the roller on their pool deck. The Downunder Hidden Roller has become the popular choice for the discerning pool owner.

STRENGTHS With over 90 percent of the pool’s water lost through evaporation and with the ability to conserve the pools water temperature pool covers are becoming a standard inclusion in new pool builds. Saving energy and water is a very real need for most people in today’s climate so it just makes sense. With that we are also noticing a greater trend for pool owners to move towards thermal covers for their greater aesthetic appeal, better water temperature control both when ambient temperature is hot or cold and they last longer.

While more and more people install pool covers the need for roller systems that are less intrusive are paramount. WEAKNESSES Some people don’t like the idea of covering the pool water for aesthetic reasons. But with the current environmental and energy pressures, we feel we are at that point where the discussion shouldn’t be “will I cover my pool?” but “how?” These proactive conversations at the start of the build process makes handling the cover as easy as possible. Planning the pool for an easy to use, effective and attractive pool cover and roller system needs to be considered at the start of your pool building project. The Downunder Hidden Roller is very easy to install when the pool is going in but generally much harder and more costly to retro fit to an existing pool.

THE VERDICT As we become a more energy efficient and sustainable community, pool covers will be as essential as a pool pump or filter in the swimming pool landscape.

How does building a pool on a small lot differ to a backyard with a lot of space? TS: Clever design and construction are crucial in a smaller backyard. Amazing gardens can come in all shapes and sizes, but we have created many fabulous outdoor spaces on a limited footprint. [The key is to] create the illusion of space whilst delivering all the features our clients require in their outdoor area.

The design process accommodates our clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifestyle, their home and outdoor space. How long did the McCarthy project take to complete? Did the process differ from your usual approach in any way? This project encompassed the front, rear and side of the property fulfilling the clients brief to create a beautiful, sustainable [and] low-maintenance garden. Our qualified team constructed this outdoor space over a period of three months, their expert workmanship delivering a fantastic result. We carefully selected plants and trees to feature throughout this project, with climbers to establish and create a magnificent backdrop to showcase this garden. All the garden beds have been

installed with automatic irrigation systems to minimise maintenance. What are the benefits of a small pool and spa versus a larger project? Plunge pools and spas are ideal for a smaller sized yard or if you have a long narrow garden or sideway, a lap style pool could be an option. A larger area has more scope for resort style living but as we custom build your outdoor living area and swimming pool we can create a poolside entertaining area to suit any space. How did you balance the pool and spa with the entertaining space and greenery in a tight space? Positioning the entertaining area adjacent to the house with the swimming pool and spa to the rear of the garden allowed for the inclusion of garden beds and a lawn area. We then created a stunning backdrop to showcase the garden with a stone feature wall and planted creepers to extend the vertical gardens and soften the outdoor space.

What additional features does the McCarthy project showcase? Was sustainability or easy maintenance a main concern? Sustainability and easy maintenance have been considered throughout the entire outdoor space. Careful selection of plants and installing irrigation ensured we delivered a sustainable, easily maintained garden. What style of pool/spa and design elements would you recommend for a backyard where space is at a premium? Are there any features you included in the McCarthy design that work especially well in limited space? [The McCarthy Project utilised] quality stonework, timber decking, clever plant selection and positioning. With a small footprint, design is crucial to optimise the space, custom built swimming pools, spas and vertical gardens are highly effective. The options are endless! Building a swimming pool is an exciting venture for homeowners, but with a wealth of inventive design options available, it’s vital to consider what type of pool will enrich your existing landscape and lifestyle. Here, managing director of Liquid Earth Pools & Landscapes, Nate Clifft, shares his expert knowledge with Melbourne Pool + Outdoor Design on how to use your locale to your advantage. With countless pool designs readily available and leading industry experts just a direct message away, homeowners have the freedom to build their dream pool to their desired specifications. Even with this flexibility and accessibility, homeowners should first envision the type of pool that is best suited to the size of their property. “The Aussie dream of homeownership nowadays comes with some real pressure,” Clifft notes. “Design and building fads are prevalent on TV and social media and it’s very easy for clients to get swept away with grand dreams.” This practical thinking isn’t a hindrance, but an excuse to get truly creative and allow your location to facilitate the transformation of your backyard.

PAVED PARADISE Inner city properties may not naturally lend themselves to a swimming pool, but the architectural challenges of a smaller site should be embraced, as this is where designers and prospective pool owners can really let their creativity flourish. “Inner city can offer wow factors like no other if the structure allows something completely out of the box,” Clifft says. An inner city pool can be tactfully designed to maximise the available space, without overtaking your entire backyard. Lap pools and plunge pools offer versatility for inner city dwellers; designs that can be shaped around the contours of the home to give the illusion of

a larger footprint. Cantilevered pools are in a league of their own with a breadth of design potential and a unique vantage point for inner city views. “With all of the advances in engineering, we can now create spaces where there is almost none,” Clifft says. Before embarking on a new build, homeowners should consider the practicality of these designs and how they will enhance their current lifestyle. Clifft warns homeowners that plunge and lap pools can become a “stressful experience” for parents with young children manoeuvring around sharp edges and deep water. Even with these practicalities in mind, Clifft’s passion for pushing boundaries is palpable – offering reassurance to Melbourne’s

inner city homeowners seeking to enjoy a slice of the Australian dream in their backyard.

A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY The sprawling landscape of rural and bush properties affords homeowners great design potential for their idyllic swimming pool. Pools built in rural or countryside properties are in a prime position to take advantage of picturesque views. Negative, glass and wet edge pools are the perfect vessel for enjoying outdoor scenery. As well as being a stunning choice, these designs also help to overcome the sloping challenges often associated with rural blocks. With greater available space and minimal neighbourhood disruption during installation, there are few design restrictions for these types of sites. Myriad design possibilities can seem daunting when undertaking a new build, so to avoid building large for the sake of building large, homeowners should stick to one basic principle; creating a pool that meets the needs of their family. Clifft uses this ethos as the driving factor behind rural pool designs, “With lots of space comes the urge to over-exaggerate your design,” he explains. “Large sites also require very strict budget control … with large spaces come large quantities of materials [and] large invoices.”

The size and scope of your pool should be dictated by how often you and your family will realistically use your swimming pool. Are you building just for you and your partner? Do you throw large outdoor parties with extended family and friends? Do you have young children who are likely to spend every summer’s day swimming? These are just some of the questions that potential pool owners should be asking before consulting a designer and builder to avoid their pool ending up as an expensive, neglected water feature. “I endeavour to keep the large sites in respect to the house and the family living in it,” Clifft says. Although it might be tempting to splash out on an elaborate pool if the space permits, your funds should be channelled into creating an oasis that will be used on a daily basis during those scorching Melbourne summers.

ROCKIN’ THE SUBURBS Straddling between a limited inner-city footprint and expansive rural land, suburban homeowners should prioritise functionality and privacy when designing their pool. Of course, privacy doesn’t have to equate to shutting out neighbours with a fence that borders every square inch of your property. “Screen and fences may give you the immediate pay off [but] often clients are underwhelmed once they are erected,”

Clifft says. Instead, homeowners can experiment with their landscaping to establish greater privacy for their families. This can be executed with hedge plants, wisteria and Boston ivy – plants that will give your backyard a lush feel without hardening your landscape. “Well designed garden beds, planters or even pots can bring privacy, softness and life into an area,” Clifft says. “Investing in plants and greenery will pay off in spades in the long run.” These natural elements are key in designing your own personal retreat to escape life’s daily grind. Clifft also stresses the importance of designing with a clear head and recognising that not all shapes and sizes are going to be functional in a suburban setting where space is a factor. “The design [is] paramount in these tighter scenarios with building restrictions and knowing what can be achieved without consuming too much valuable backyard space,” Clifft says. Lap pools or concrete freeform pools are an exceptional choice for residential sites as the design can mirror the shape of your backyard to optimise space. For residential

Images courtesy of Liquid Earth Pools & Landscapes homeowners concerned that their surrounding neighbourhood landscape is lacking, Clifft reminds readers that with the right design, your pool can the most eye-catching feature on your property. “It’s good to keep in mind that you don’t need an amazing natural amphitheatre to create a good view from your pool,” he says. “Sometimes the greatest view can be right under your nose in the amazing body of water that is your pool.”

BASKING BY THE BEACH There are few greater luxuries than swimming in your very own pool with a stunning view of the beach. Beachside abodes are privy to some of Victoria’s most breathtaking landscapes, so your design should capitalise on these natural surrounds whilst offering a haven from the bustling coastline. Clifft echoes this sentiment, “I have found that designing pools for a beachside environment is about creating an ‘after the beach’ scene ... your own private island to escape the crowds.” Achieving this careful balance starts with creating optimal conditions in your pool and landscape – factors that are out of your control on an actual beach. Unfortunately, a pool by the ocean goes hand in hand with cold breezes, so installing a wind break will protect your pool (and its inhabitants) from prevailing

winds. Your pool should offer an uninterrupted view of the inbuilt landscape; infinity edges are tailor-made for such coastal properties, creating a dreamy blur between your pool’s edge, the ocean and the horizon. With this stunning visual effect, homeowners can opt for pared-back landscaping, allowing their pool design to truly sing.

THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE Weather conditions will determine the types of features and landscaping that should accompany your pool. Being aware of such conditions allows homeowners the opportunity to take the right precautions before construction is completed. In cooler climate areas, pool design should focus on retaining heat. “Cooler climate pools are all about extending your swimming years,” Clifft says. Heaters, pool covers, and heat pumps are the natural solution to combat against a cooler climate, but Clifft also recommends creating wind breaks. This can be achieved by using plants in your surrounding landscape or with the strategic placement of your pool fence. A darker lining or tiling can also retain heat, while wide ledges and shallow sections can also improve heat exposure during sunny days. “Protecting your pool from environmental factors that make your heating systems have to work harder is my first port

of call,” Clifft says. “There is no use in having the best heater and cover in the world if your pool is constantly being exposed to chilling southerly winds.” Swimming pools constructed in warmer-climate areas can also use landscaping to their advantage with pergolas, water features and planting to establish cooler areas within the backyard. Strategic placement of your pool can also battle against a hot climate. “Perching a pool on the highest point of the property can help bring in the cooling winds,” Clifft says. While there’s no doubt that constructing and maintaining a pool is a big commitment for any homeowner, choosing the right design will eliminate any lingering risk. “There is no avoiding that building a pool and landscape is a costly investment, but any investment that you’re going to spend your hard earned money on needs its insurance,” Clifft says, “and that’s what design provides; insurance that every dollar you spend has been planned, quoted and detailed before you even break ground.”

COOL AS CONCRETE The process of building a unique concrete pool shell doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be an overwhelming ordeal. In this Q&A interview, Simi West speaks in conversation with Chris Pettigrew, owner of Trade Pools for insight into the process of concrete pool construction. Pettigrew explains how the team at Trade Pools get creative with concrete and provides a unique perspective on the building processes and challenges to be mindful of when building concrete pool shell structures.

Could you introduce us to Trade Pools? CP: Trade Pools service swimming pool companies, residential and commercial builders as well as landscape companies. The team offers the construction of basic pools right up to high-end, out of the ordinary and commercial pool structures.

Please outline the process of creating a concrete pool shell. Offering an end-to-end service for the construction of concrete pool shells makes the process easy and cost effective for our clients. Whether we are engaged from the beginning or just for some aspects like formwork or reinforcing steel installation, we offer experience and reliability.

What are some specific examples of pool structures you have built that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fit the usual, linear, rectangle shape? One of the most interesting projects would probably be the enormous fan-shaped outdoor wave pool we completed at Funfields Theme Park in Whittlesea! It is more than 2200m2 in size and was a great project to be engaged in.

What are the biggest challenges to face when building concrete pool shells? Weather and site logistics are usually the variables that catch people out. Being at the mercy of the elements can impact any type of building but when you are working in the ground most of the time it is important to be prepared and to be cognisant of how to deal with poor soil or site conditions if the weather is not ideal. Experience and preparation are the key to overcoming

this. Site logistics, coordination of contractors, and trades required to be strung together with continuity to achieve the best result can also be tricky at times. This is why a lot of our clients prefer us to handle the whole process from the beginning - starting from the set-out of the pool, right through to overseeing the concreting of the pool. [We want clients to] feel comfortable that it is in experienced hands so they can spend their time more efficiently working on their business or managing more projects. It is for this reason that our services offer greater value than just a job well done.

How many people in your team are involved in any given project? This varies from project to project. When a job comes in, we start by assessing the resources that are required and planning accordingly. We have a great core team for the construction aspects, as well as many contractors who all work to achieve the result

EXCAVATION The process begins with the accurate set out of the desired pool design for excavation. We either use our own machines or one of our experienced contractors who are familiar with the tight tolerances required for the exact structure thicknesses required by the engineers. We also work closely with some contractors that our builders prefer or request.

FORMWORK Depending on the soil type, location or finished level of the pool, formwork is used to create the shape or essentially a mould of the pool to be built. On occasion, simply the top of the pool is needed. For sites where the pool is out of the ground or in loose soil or sand, the complete outside of the structure from top to bottom is needed. At Trade Pools, we have an experienced team when it comes to these aspects and often provide advice to clients prior to commencing some projects.

REINFORCING STEEL After this, the reinforcing steel is installed as per the engineers’ design and is then ready for inspection by a building surveyor, inspector or engineer. The amount of reinforcing steel can vary significantly depending on the design, site and features required.

PLUMBING Plumbing items that are required to be cast into the concrete pool structure are then installed before the concreting process.

CONCRETING Concreting the pool shell or structure is carried out by one of our experienced ‘concrete spraying’ contractors or by the clients preferred contractor as this is a critical component of the process that requires good preparation of the pool in order to be successful. Concrete is then pumped and pneumatically applied to the walls and floor using compressed air. This is an amazing process that sees the pool’s structure concreted in one piece, usually within only a few hours. Images courtesy of Trade Pools. required. Aspects that need considerable attention may be time constraints, difficult site access or largescale projects. Most projects normally have a crew of between 3-5 tradespeople onsite throughout the construction of the pool structure and bigger projects can sometimes have teams of 8-12 people or more working through different stages.

What would you like to see a lot more of? Great question. I’ve seen a lot of things in my 27 years of building concrete pools! Innovative design. Even though the construction techniques used in building concrete swimming pools today have been around since the late ‘50s/early ‘60s in Australia, we are still using them to build more complex designed pools. What would you recommend to a homeowner who is looking to build a pool? Engage a reputable, experienced and licensed pool builder or company to undertake your project. Building a pool these days is a considerable investment and should be handled correctly. Trade Pools works with many reputable pool companies through Melbourne and some regional areas. What’s your favourite part of the process? Definitely seeing the pool concreted, not only because it is the culmination of all the preparation and work, but seeing the amazement of the owners when it is literally taking shape in front of them and to hear them say things like “I can really see the pool now, it looks amazing!”

This pared-back, elegant pool design is the latest project from Good Soil and Water. The homeowners wanted a low maintenance, hypoallergenic pool and spa that integrated seamlessly amongst the vibrant, rich landscape. Good Soil and Water has built a pool and spa that is cleverly situated to complement the stunning backyard. Working in and around the landscape was integral in fulfilling the clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; brief. The custom, galvanised pool fence was constructed to capitalise on the open lawn and give the illusion of a pool without borders. The strategic placement of the pool and spa to the right of the backyard also protects the roots of the existing elm tree. Tumbled limestone paving frames the pool and spa, flowing on from the lawn and home effortlessly. The spa sits flush against the top of the paving, fusing a luxurious design with ease of access. The patch of timber decking over the deep end has a striking floating appearance, and offers the homeowners a spot to lounge in the sun. Adding to the elegance of this project is a 30mm negative edge that curves around the spa, creating a relaxing and beautiful, pond effect. White ceramic tiles make up the poolsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interior, adding to the stripped-back, minimalist aesthetic of the project.

As the block sloped in three different directions, meticulous planning was imperative to achieve the impressive final result. The outdoor area is split into a playground area for kids and a versatile open pool area for the whole family. Frameless glass fencing has cleverly been used to separate the two independent outdoor areas, with the clear glass resulting in a modern, open and expansive feel. This 8.3m x 4.6m Corbree fibreglass pool is perfect for the whole family. Hardwearing and designed for longevity, fibreglass is associated with reduced ongoing costs, as the sturdy material doesn’t require resurfacing like a concrete pool. Fibreglass also has a smooth coat gel finish, making it less abrasive on the skin – a bonus for little children’s feet.

Bluestone pavers are featured both in the pool area and in the home to create cohesion between the two areas. Built on a heavily undulating block, the pool required large footing beams to elevate it. The use of black quartz render on its interior achieves a sleek and modern look. LED mood lighting was installed to ensure the pool can be enjoyed at any time of day and night.

This concrete pool was built by Poolscene Solutions for a bustling family in need of a picturesque, low-maintenance pool. The 8m x 4m pool boasts features that were made to stand out with the use of square set corners defying the typical mould of a traditionally tiled pool. Featuring a full-length seat and full-width steps with an impressive, overall depth of 1.9 metres, this pool is ready to be dived into and enjoyed by family and guests. Variegated green pool tiles blend flawlessly with the modern grey palette of the fencing and the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exterior. The pool is fully tiled with a ceramic version of Sukabumi stone, which is native to Indonesia and contains unique, waterpurifying properties. This pool and spa combination exudes boldness and is ready for all entertainment and relaxation needs. The luxurious spa is generously sized at 2.6m x 2.6m and features a spillover into the pool, oozing opulence and character. The surface of the pool is tiled with beautiful ceramics, which gives the pool its gorgeous, blue hue. Although the pool and the spa are a cohesive masterpiece with water flowing from one to the other, the contrasting hues allow them to each make bold statements of their own within this modern design. The beauty of swimming is that it is inclusive to all, with people from all walks of life and with varying degrees of strength able to reap the benefits of a short swim. Whether you’re a professional athlete, maintaining fitness levels or recovering from an injury, there are a plethora of health benefits that come from spending time in the water. Swimming is great for the heart, as it encourages good blood flow, keeps the heart rate up and reduces impact stress on the body. Swimming builds endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and also lowers stress and depression as it releases chemicals that offer a natural endorphin kick. Pools are an excellent addition to your backyard, promoting group activities and greater fitness, but due to the area conditions and site requirements, building a concrete pool is sometimes not possible. John Pandelis, the national sales manager of Just Spas, explains the new, portable Urban Pool product – manufactured to take the hassle out of buying a pool.

The sheet is then removed from the mould and rotated onto a formed trolley, before being fibreglass-reinforced. We have invested almost $500,000 into machinery to be able to complete this process. How can the Urban Pool enhance swimming experience? Having an Urban Pool with a swim system is like having your very own swim trainer in your backyard, whenever you need them! You can swim continuously against a pre-set current speed, or change speeds to suit your level of workout. It is also a great way for kids to learn how to swim. Due to the Urban Pool being a contained, well insulated body of water, it can also be heated to the perfect swimming temperature.

What are the different configurations and size options available for the urban pool? Choose your size: - Lengths – 4m, 6m or 8m - Depths – 1.32m or 1.52m Choose your fittings: - Straight steps, corner steps, 5 jet step system, single-zone spa or dual zone spa. Choose your swim system: - 2 jet swim system, 5 speed swim system, 8 speed swim system, no swim system. Choose your heating: - 9.2kW heat pump (heat cool) - 24kW gas heater (3kW heater standard when a spa or swim system is added)

What are the advantages of installing an Urban Pool over a concrete pool? The project time is a lot quicker. Once your area is ready, you can have your Urban Pool ordered and craned in within a couple of weeks. With concrete pools, there is always quite a large mess in the backyard and a lot of soil to remove. The project times could be approximately two to three months. Another big advantage is that if you decide to relocate, you are able to take your Urban Pool with you! What factors should pool owners consider when choosing an Urban Pool? There are a few simple choices to create the perfect Urban Pool. These include size, depth, acrylic and cabinet colours. Depending on what you want to use your Urban Pool for, there are also a range of choices that suit your lifestyle; swim systems, open spas, dual zone spas, and more. Are there any specific homes that are best suited to installing an Urban Pool? All homes are suitable for an Urban Pool! A lot of blocks can’t have a concrete pool installed due to

easements, ground conditions and the size of the area. An Urban Pool is a way to have a pool in your backyard when concrete is not an option. What can customers expect from the Urban Pool’s swim jets? The Urban Pool’s eight speed jet system is like no other. The system flows from 800LPM, up to a massive 4000LPM when on its highest speed. You can set the duration of your swim and customise a gradual increase in speed as your workout builds up, and then a decrease as your training finishes. This type of training is one of the most efficient forms of cardio exercise, and can deliver benefits faster than typical cardio workouts. Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone Solutions’ flamed ‘Fantasy’ granite was selected for the paving; with a lightgrey base and dark veining, the granite perfectly complements the white exterior of the house and its stark black roof. The pavers were produced in 600mm squares and 900mm x 1200mm rectangles to produce a freelength pattern that’s suited to large areas. An undercover outdoor dining area houses a striking fireplace that’s clad in Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone Solutions’ ‘Dunolly’ stone material, which is ideal for feature walls due to its random pattern. The stone beautifully blends in with the backyard’s natural surroundings, as well as the granite pavers, which are similar in tone. The focal point of the outdoor space is the luxurious 20m x 6m statement pool, which features exquisite glass interior tiles and ‘Raven’ granite coping.

This breathtaking project was developed in collaboration with several companies. Designed by David Bennett of Gardens by Design, the peaceful oasis located on the outskirts of Melbourne, showcases landscaping and paving by Phil Brock from Prestige Gardens, and a stunning pool by Serenity Pools. Limestone by Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone Solutions was used for the general paving and coping, as well as the lining of the pool’s interior. The clean grout lines of the pool’s sawn-edge interior invite guests to slip into the crystalclear water. The pool’s visual appeal is further enhanced by the ‘Hotham Strata’ wall cladding, which extends from the pool floor to create a stunning water feature that delivers a trickling waterfall effect. ‘Esna’, a tumbled limestone, appears throughout the undercover porch, verandah and alfresco kitchen. The acidetched version of this limestone ‘Edfu’, was used in all unsheltered areas to achieve slip resistance and textural variation.
