DULUX COLOUR

2020 ESSENCE By Tristan Lott

Each year, Dulux’s Colour Forecast predicts the trends and styles we’ll see in colour use throughout the home. Here, Queensland Home Design + Living unpacks the 2020 Colour Forecast. With a range of neutral shades inspired by nature and bolstered by vibrant accent hues, the four palettes designed by Dulux will inspire and invigorate home design this year.

T

he Dulux Colour Forecast is always inspired by what is going on in the world around us, and this year is no exception. In a time when we are constantly ‘on’ and connected to the endless stream of information coming our way, this year’s predictions encourage us to cut the distractions and create space for dreams to come alive. The Dulux Colour Forecast encompasses four distinct and expressive palettes: Comeback, Cultivate, Grounded, and Indulge. The Comeback palette consists of an invigorating array of blues complemented by warm accent shades, whilst the Cultivate palette is a gentle and calm collection of soft greens and blues. The Grounded palette comprises a luxurious assortment of liveable neutrals and highlights, and Indulge includes a rich selection of passionate purples, reds and browns. Aptly dubbed ‘Essence,’ the 2020 Colour Forecast calls back to the essence of what makes us happy and allows moments of personal expression. These palettes inspire us to disconnect from our digital devices, step away from the madness, and recharge our bodies and minds in a space that provides the opportunity to reflect and rebalance. “With more focus on mental health, the wellness movement continues to gain momentum, as does an emphasis on natural materiality,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour and communications manager of Dulux. As modern homeowners are adopting an

22

increasingly environmentally friendly approach to design, these colour schemes remind us of nature and are well matched with recycled materials and the blend of rustic features and modern styles. These palettes were designed to complement a mindful approach to design and styling. Warm, earthy materials like clay are quickly gaining popularity, while bold and bright colours are being used in smaller doses as feature walls and accents. Neutral tones are favoured throughout the home, pairing well with natural materials such as stone and timber. The home is somewhere we go to recharge and relax; a distraction-free zone that allows us to centre ourselves and celebrate our true personality. The Comeback palette is equally fresh and energising. Full of rich oceanic and mineral-inspired shades paired with interesting accents of burgundy, rust and clay to add depth. Of this palette, Lucena-Orr says,

Comeback

“Colours for 2020 are more restrained than in previous years. Brights are pulled back and influenced by nature [and] neutrals are soft and sophisticated.” Andrea Lucena-Orr

Grounded

23

“there’s a lightness and fluidity to the ocean tones … while the warm, earthy shades add cosiness.” This palette is designed to fuel creative thinking and lends itself well to unique styling. “It’s the ideal backdrop to combine furniture from different eras – from midcentury through to the 80s,” Lucena-Orr says. The Grounded palette uses a ‘less is more approach’ by combining gentle and complementary neutrals with touches of warm coral. Conveying a sense of luxurious, understated beauty and timelessness, this collection reflects the shift in our values towards craftsmanship and honest design. Pared-back and uncomplicated, Lucena-Orr tells us that Grounded reflects the need for a more tonal palette in 2020. “It has a soft, neutral feel that creates a sense of relaxation in a space, with fold and coral adding touches of luxe.” We’re increasingly aware of the positive effects of nature on our physical and mental wellbeing, and the Cultivate palette introduces a new and creative way of bringing nature inside. A calming variety of greens from olive and pistachio to forest green and emerald, this palette is full of colours and textures that are “easy to work with and have a warmth that really conveys the essence of home,” says LucenaOrr. Beautifully suited to raw timber, natural stone and cool glass, this array of colours is a celebration of nature. Decadent and rich burgundies, eggplant and brown are softened by faded terracotta and coral in the Indulge palette. “This palette is not for the faint hearted,” warns Lucena-Orr. “It’s dramatic and exciting and is guaranteed to add 'wow' factor to a master bedroom, dining room or living room.” Choosing to accent pink in dusty rose and tan shades, the Indulge palette modernises what has been a key colour of the last few years. These tones can be easily paired with nostalgic 1970s and art deco aesthetic; a great way to reflect personal style in your abode. Paint is an easy, affordable and effective way to revitalise any space. The Dulux Colour Forecast 2020 introduces some new and exciting ways to create a dwelling that invigorates and excites, allowing you to disconnect and recharge. “Trends can be a useful roadmap when choosing colour,” Lucena-Orr says. “Once you’ve lived with colour, you never want to return to a blank canvas.” Whether you wish to completely reinvent your home or want a change but feeling stuck for inspiration, the Dulux Colour Forecast 2020 is sure to kickstart your research and provide some great motivation for bringing more of the essence of what make you feel good into your home.

Indulge

COMEBACK Intimate, individual spaces reflect our identity, interests and passions. The Comeback palette features vibrant blues, contrasted with warm burgundies and eye-catching rust and mustard shades. These vintage hues create a space for storytelling and escape and contrast the monotony of day-to-day life by creating revitalising spaces. Looking to the past for inspiration, this palette was cultivated by mixing styles of different eras, from funky, mid-century design to the vibrancy of the 1980s. The result is an attractive collection of bold and confident shades, well-suited antique, vintage and contemporary styling. Refined and elegant shapes are highlighted while typically heavy angles are softened, this palette is especially complementary to rich velvet furniture and vivid accents. The vibrancy of these colours makes them wellsuited to become feature walls that can help to divide an open-plan space into distinct zones. Picture the outstanding ‘Master Blue’ as a feature in your living space, paired with warm accents of ochre and clay. For something different, ‘Misty Grape’ and ‘Tort’ make for an intriguing pair in your bathroom with funky towels and lush greenery to create an eclectic vibe.

CULTIVATE Bringing the outside in, the Cultivate palette brings awareness to the relationship between nature and our wellbeing. Seeking innovative ways to encourage connections with the natural world within our home, we fill our space with plants, botanical prints and furniture crafted from natural materials such as timber and stone. The home is now not only a place to rest and recover, but a space to inspire and flourish. Echoing the infinite hues found in nature, this palette layers delicate greens with chalky blues, deep plums and even soft yellow shades to rejuvenate and inspire your home. Full of complementary tones and textures that radiate subtle warmth, this selection was made for home enthusiasts. Using green tones throughout your home establishes a unique and soothing ambiance. Pair these natural shades with industrial accents and dark timber to introduce stunning contrast. While these hues are effective throughout your home, try ‘Te Aroha’ or ‘Pencarrow’ in your kitchen and meals area to add a sense of calm to what can often be the most chaotic part of a home.

25

GROUNDED This palette was crafted to reflect the changing definition of luxury. Modern homeowners are associating luxury items with craftsmanship, longevity, authenticity and understated beauty, and thus this palette is built with soft, liveable shades. Mindful of the purchases we make, the ‘less is more’ philosophy has never been more popular. Recycled and repurposed materials are highly sought after as we fill our homes with soft leathers, tactile linens and honeyed timbers. From melted caramel and pale biscuit shades to muddy lavender and hints of terracotta, this palette is full of shades that are well-suited for use throughout the home. Accents of gold and coral make for bold highlights, but the overarching subtlety of this palette gives it universal appeal and a sense of timeless luxury. This palette is versatile but can effectively create a calm atmosphere in your living spaces and bedroom. Pair these soothing shades with soft linen and buttery leather, and take inspiration from the lively coral of ‘Gold Pheasant’ and brown tones in ‘Fantan’ and ‘Pancake Mix’ for feature accents like rugs and pillows.

26

INDULGE The Indulge palette is rich and lush, reminiscent of 1970s disco with art deco touches. Motivated by a desire to escape, this palette was designed to help create spaces that keep dreams of travel and adventure alive. Dramatic and romantic shades are equally suited to soft velvet and chenille, curvaceous furniture and touches of bling, as well as the frayed edges and time-worn finishes that are popular today. From rich burgundy and eggplant to earthy brown, faded terracotta and soft coral for warmth, this palette is full of passionate shades to excite any abode. This range of indulgent shades is hard to resist and is the perfect choice for adding drama and inspiration. Lush and decadent, play with jewel-tones like ‘Camellia’ and ‘Red Rebel’ to create an indulgent living space that exudes luxury. Soften the bold atmosphere with retro accents and soft, rounded shapes in shades like ‘Lilac Light’ and ‘Unbleached Calico’. The similar undertones in this palette make it easy to mix and match – play with patterns in these complementary hues to create a striking statement.

se s e Sn A FEATURE WALL FOR THE

by Olivia Morffew

When it comes to creating the perfect feature wall, there is no size or style that fits all. Each wall is unique to each home; they can add a striking contrast to any room or tie in with the home’s exterior with the use of similar raw materials. Sitting down with Dwain Labuschewski, managing director of Hezzelic Homes, Olivia Morffew investigates the myriad ways you can revamp a blank wall into something dynamic and eye-catching.

Feature walls were once just a single wall painted in a different colour, creating a bright, striking contrast in the room. Recent years have seen a shift from this basic, overpowering style. Current design trends showcase feature walls crafted from different materials to create a visual variation in the room, or to complement the colour and materials featured throughout the home.

A SOLUTION FOR ALL When planning and designing a feature wall, it’s absolutely vital that you incorporate this into your build as early as possible. “The earlier in the build you can finalise the placement of [your] ideas and materials, the easier [it will be for] the builder to set up,” Labuschewski advises. This ensures that the feature wall can be incorporated into a space naturally and seamlessly, especially with materials that can be tricky to work with. However, if you’re wanting to install a feature wall post-build, there are a number of materials available to use, all with various installation requirements. For the young and young at heart, Labuschewski prompts readers to consider creating a chalkboard feature wall – achieved simply by using chalkboard paint. This 28

versatile wall gives you the option to draw or write anything your heart desires or keep it simple with a sleek black matte look. Chalkboard feature walls make a great addition to a child’s bedroom, allowing them to express their creativity on a large-scale surface. Timber panels are another excellent material for a feature wall post-build. Timber is sustainable, easy to source and install, while also being budget-friendly. Incorporating natural elements into your interiors has proven to increase wellness and reduce stress, so timber is the perfect material to bring a touch of nature indoors. Ensuring stylistic cohesion throughout the home is one of the most important factors to consider before kickstarting your feature wall planning. If you’re struggling to work out what textures to showcase and display, take a look at what you already have at home. If warm tones are prominent throughout your interiors, then opt for brick or timber textures for your statement wall. If you tend to favour cooler tones, then perhaps concrete or dark timber will work best with your existing colour scheme. Before diving into the planning stages, it’s important to look around and find inspiration. Having a clear vision of what you want is

integral for a spectacular showpiece; “[be] confident in implementing your design brief,” Labuschewski echoes. If you’re struggling with sourcing inspiration, Labuschewski recommends consulting a designer for advice or a second opinion.

SIZE MATTERS When planning your statement wall, size will play a significant role in determining which design is right for your home. Selecting a bold, striking design in a small room can make the space feel claustrophobic and smaller than its actual dimensions. If you’re wanting to create a juxtaposition in a small space, Labuschewski advises that your feature wall should have purpose, without overembellishing the design and texture. “Have an intention and plan it well,” he adds. Installing a feature wall in a visually busy room can create an eyesore. While you might feel the temptation to include a plethora of textures and patterns to add interest, Labuschewski warns homeowners against using too much detail and trying to incorporate too many styles in one place. Using a large surface gives you the opportunity for something either striking or subtle, and the use of concrete is an excellent example;

go for polished concrete if you’re seeking a dark, bold and moody aesthetic or opt for a lighter tone to create a soft, discrete difference.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN A number of homeowners are embracing external materials for their feature walls. Resources like cladding, polished render, timber flooring or ceiling are all making appearances inside the home. This trend ensures a harmonious pairing between the indoor and outdoor areas. Repurposing materials that aren’t common inside the home is a unique and, at times, cost-friendly solution if you’re struggling to work out what style and texture you want to showcase. If taking a more personal approach to designing and creating your feature wall, upcycling old materials from a previous build is something you can consider. Whether it be the bricks from a knockdown or old, excess timber, reusing these materials incorporates a bit of your personal story into the house’s structure. While incorporating external materials inside is a common trend, you can also create a visual distinction outside the home and in your backyard. If you prefer

29

to go down the path of outdoor feature walls, then Labuschewski suggests that you should “change up the already used cladding walls”. Using textured finishes, such as venetian render, instead of the standard paint render is crucial for a perfectly executed wall. Another suggestion from Labuschewski is to put a brick in the wall, by “repurposing face brick in amongst render [for a] subtle and welcome texture”.

BREAKING BARRIERS There’s no restriction on where you can install a feature wall. While most homeowners install these showpieces as a feature in ‘main’ rooms, having something installed in an uncommon room has great appeal, offering a little bit of texture to those usually unadorned areas. A powder room is typically plain and bare, but you can craft a lovely, unexpected contrast with the installation of a timber feature wall. If there’s a staircase in your home, constructing a feature wall in this area offers a striking juxtaposition of textures. Concrete panelling can soften bold blacks and timber in an industrial-inspired entryway, while white, timber panels in the stairwell of a coastal home

adds subtle texture and a slight visual contrast. Photo murals also break the barriers of ‘traditional’ feature walls. This can be done on both a small and large scale – a perfect option for those who want to show off their photography prowess. Your favourite black and white landscape can become a timeless and personal addition to your space, while a coloured photo mural creates a playful, vibrant point of difference in the room. The textured feature wall trend is also being incorporated into the kitchen with splashbacks. While tiles and marble are the commonly used materials, you can put a textured twist on the standard splashback with uniquely designed tiles or pressed metal to create a visually appealing distinction. For those aiming for an industrial aesthetic, oxidised brass or a concrete splashback are the perfect materials for you! There’s something for every homeowner and every space when it comes to feature walls. Whether you want to go bold and dramatic or opt for a soft, subtle style, always consider the intention, style and feeling you want to create in your room. Untagged images by Hezzelic Homes

INVILLA ARCHITECTURE

AIRY AND CAPACIOUS IMMACULATE FIXTURES

This impressive two-storey abode is situated on a 300m2 property and features five full-sized bedrooms, dual-living spaces and an open-plan kitchen and living zone which extends out to a generous backyard and outdoor entertainment area. To achieve this, Invilla Architecture’s design fully utilised the vertical space, creating a home that is airy and capacious without sacrificing any features. The sleek, contemporary design includes ample windows to flood the home with natural light and provide an illusion of greater space. A two-storey void gives the appearance of a living area that floats over the entryway – an architectural feat that also enhances the feeling of height throughout. Prominent lighting and stained timber cladding contrast beautifully against the dark weatherboard exterior, allowing the property to truly stand out on the street. The front façade also furthers the impression of space with large windows to showcase the bright, expansive interior.

32

HOME DESIGN - ARCHITECTS

The property’s smaller footprint and sloping block posed several challenges when it came to establishing an inviting backyard that didn’t feel enclosed. Invilla Architecture ensured that every inch of the space was effectively used, keeping the design functional and minimal, with the connecting open-plan living area adding to its capacity. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry and garage all wrap around a centralized downstairs living space, which allowed enough room to include a fifth bedroom, while leaving the entire rear of the house untouched to open up to the backyard. There is no compromise in terms of luxury and this home boasts a full-sized pool and an alfresco area equipped with a built-in barbecue, sink and wine fridge for unlimited entertaining possibilities. While each room is fitted with modern fixtures for ease of living, the oversized master bedroom is something to behold, featuring a private balcony, walk-in robe and luxurious ensuite.

IRP ARCHITECTS

ROOM TO GROW AN EVOLVING EXPANSION

Extending upon a previous build, IRP Architects was excited to complete the final stage of this homeowner’s masterplan; building the guest pavilion. The guest pavilion not only welcomes guests but expands and changes with the family as their three daughters grow. In designing and building the extension, it was important that the additional building flowed organically from the main home. Achieving this task required careful planning and attention to placement amongst the trees and natural landscape. The final result provides seclusion and privacy, as well as endless entertaining potential. A stunning landscaped pathway with luscious tropical plants and manicured hedges leads to the pavilion. The inclusion of corten light boxes complements the interior colour palette of the main house, connecting the two dwellings through colour and texture. To emphasise this connection, the front façade of the primary residence was re-cladded with the same zinc cladding as the guest pavilion. Showcasing bold colours and geometric shapes, the guest pavilion creates a striking form against lush greenery.

36

HOME DESIGN - ARCHITECTS

Echoing the main residence, the guest pavilion replicates similar design motifs, including bi-fold glass doors to offer a seamless transition from airy to cosy between the living space and alfresco area. This verandah overlooks the expansive property, bracketed on either side by steel-panelled walls, providing privacy without obstructing the property’s picturesque views. The bathroom accentuates the partnership between stone and timber textures, crafting a refined appearance that reflects the aesthetic of the main home. The frameless shower exudes contemporary luxury and offers easy cleaning for the homeowner when hosting guests. This versatile extension is a multi-use space, containing a kitchenette, combined bathroom and laundry, storeroom, multipurpose main room and an expansive outdoor veranda. The guest pavilion is characterised by its ability to entertain guests, provide privacy, and extend the potential of a growing family’s activities together.

DION SEMINARA ARCHITECTURE

SUSTAINABLE PARADISE A LUSH AND BLISSFUL DESIGN

This stunning design by Dion Seminara Architecture spans more than 250-square-metres and two spacious levels, overlooking the neighbouring hills and greenery. This home epitomises comfortable and sustainable living while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. No compromise has been made in terms of luxury. Large sliding doors connect the kitchen and dining area with the expansive outdoor entertaining area, which allows the homeowners and their guests to move unhindered throughout the space. Another unique feature is the smart integration of the dining table with the kitchen’s island bench, increasing both functionality and capacity within the space. As suggested by Dion Seminara Architecture, a large double garage was included at the back of the property to act as a heat load block, increasing the energy star rating of this home. The contrast of the light and dark colours of the exterior, reinforces the modern design, while the circular lattice fencing creates an elegant feature piece throughout the garden.

40

HOME DESIGN - ARCHITECTS

With such a sustainably conscious design, it’s no surprise that the home was awarded an incredibly high 8.7 energystar rating. Everything in this home is designed to minimise environmental impact, as the homeowners wanted a home that would generate more energy than it would consume. Dion Seminara Architecture made this the focus of its creation – including water- and energy-saving features and deriving the home’s structure and layout from this brief. The roof was specially shaped in order to fit the 62 solar panels which power the dwelling, while the high ceiling and external screening elements create cross ventilation. The abundance of double-glazed windows and glass doors maximise natural light and airflow within the design, illuminating the home and reducing the need for heating and cooling.

ON THE

By Tegan Lyon

There are a number of key design components involved in crafting the ultimate home office to reduce stress, enhance productivity and establish clear boundaries between your work and home life. Queensland Home Design + Living explores the must-have features for a new build or renovation, as well as tips for existing homeowners finding themselves in need of an impromptu work and study zone.

A PRACTICAL APPROACH Before constructing your home office, you should first consider who will be primarily working in the room – adults, children or teenagers – as this will dictate your design. Once this is established, assess the type of work or study that will be carried out in the office, the frequency of this work, and the expected amount of foot traffic. “Identify the required use of the space [and the] number of users,” Osman echoes. This is crucial for your designer to conceive a result

In recent months, we have seen a large portion of Australians transitioning to remote work and study from home. Whether you are constructing a brand-new office or revamping a work and study zone within your existing home, creating an environment that promotes productivity is more important than ever. Here, Tegan Lyon sits down with Stuart Osman, director of award-winning design company, Stuart Osman, about devising the perfect office space for your abode.

that will benefit you and your family, “[Our goal is to] create a space that allows our clients to be productive in a way that suits their needs,” Osman says.

THE RIGHT LOCALE The positioning of your office should directly correlate with how it will be used. If you conduct the majority of your work from home, either on a temporary or permanent basis, isolation is crucial to maintain productivity. In this instance, Osman suggests establishing your office away from communal areas – such as the kitchen or living areas – for greater privacy and minimal background noise. For homeowners conducting video conferencing or face-to-face business with customers, clients or employees, it is important to uphold a professional tone. “[Build] near the front of the home to utilise external access for visitors,” Osman recommends. However, if your job requires little client interaction, feel free to

prioritise location based on a better view, sun exposure and fresh air. While a fully functional home office is necessary for some, for those with reduced working hours or younger children, a study nook is the perfect alternative. “[Study nooks] serve a purpose when catering to young children or a more casual working space,” Osman adds, “Depending on your needs, sometimes it’s better to have a study nook closer to the hub of the home so small children can be supervised.” Study nooks are best situated near high-traffic areas for accessibility and convenience. As many family members gravitate towards the kitchen, a study nook can be perfectly nestled near or adjacent this space. Osman suggests “incorporating similar materials and cabinetry” to create visual harmony. With an unprecedented number of Australians shifting to temporary remote work and study,

many do not have the luxury of an in-built study nook, spare bedroom or home office to conduct business. “Set up a space by trying to create a division from other activities,” Osman advises readers. Avoid working in living areas or bedrooms to maintain the distinction between your leisure time and working hours. Ensure your improvised workspace has ample natural light, minimal clutter, and invest in a comfortable office chair.

OPTIMISE YOUR ENVIRONMENT A considered layout and thoughtful office design will optimise your working environment; reducing distractions and enhancing productivity. The chief components to increase the functionality of your office include access to natural light, economic storage solutions and practical use of floor space. “[Your] desk [should] be well-lit

with access to external windows for fresh air,” Osman says. Incorporate full-length windows into your build to capitalise on natural light for a well-illuminated workspace, while operational windows such as awning, louvre, single, or double-hung windows are best for ventilation. Your colour palette should benefit from natural light, so Osman suggests a blend of light, earthy colours and natural materials for your interiors. One of the more integral details of your office layout is the placement of your desk. For smaller-sized offices, your desk should rest against the wall to maximise floor space, while in a larger office, a desk is better situated in the middle of the room. Some homeowners find windows or entryways distracting, so position your desk accordingly. “Find [a] layout the user is comfortable with,” Osman explains. “[It] has to be practical and maximise space.”

Superior storage solutions can be utilised to decrease unwanted clutter and guarantee a neat, tidy office space. Consider your storage options in the early stages of your design; Osman recommends a combination of, “built-in cabinetry, desk drawers, filing cupboards, and a mix of [exposed] and [concealed] shelving.” With adequate storage, your home office will have the appeal and functions of a standard office for a smooth transition to remote work. “Integrate as much multimedia equipment and fixed cabinetry to maximise use, while creating a space that is functional but maintains the aesthetics of the overall home design,” Osman says. Shifting to remote work is an adjustment, but a holistic office design with practical features will help facilitate efficiency and prevent your work from intruding on your home life. HAMPTONS OASIS ELEGANT, HIGH-END FIXTURES

Designed by Stuart Osman and built by DTL Constructions Pty Ltd, this luxurious home is as opulent as it is inviting. The open-plan design and bright neutral colouring maximises light in this dazzling two-storey abode. Featuring a grand pool pavilion, drive-through porte-cochère, and multiple indoor and outdoor living spaces, there is no compromise on luxury. Each of the spacious bedrooms includes its own en suite and walk-in robe, while the lavish master bedroom boasts a private balcony overlooking the backyard. However, the real beauty is in the details; high-end fixtures, coffered ceilings, featured dado railings and a marble covered staircase all come together to form an image of sophistication. The exterior further enhances the feeling of affluence and serenity; the pale blue colouring distinguishes from the white interior, whilst adhering to the overall theme. The timber rise and stone tread stairs give the atmosphere of a classic Hamptons-style home, while the transparent railings and highlight windows provide a modern touch.

The purposeful use of voids expands on an already capacious design and offers a stunning visual link between the lower and top levels. The subtle detailing on the balustrades, the simplistic light fittings and chandeliers add greater depth to the design, without becoming overbearing. The dining area is perfectly positioned beside the full-length rear windows which basks the classy ten-seater dining table in sunlight. The intricately designed kitchen is fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, wine and bar fridges, a butler’s sink, and generous island bench. The pristine white cabinetry is perfectly coordinated with the home’s colour scheme and style, while the polished silver stovetop and wine fridge add a welcome contrast. The project was designed with careful concerns toward sustainability, with solar energy and water-efficient fixtures fitted throughout the house. The generous-sized windows and open floorplan ensures adequate airflow without the need for cooling.

About the project: The house on the block was quite old and outdated. We looked at renovations but what the clients wanted would not work with the existing house. The land had uninterrupted view of sunshine beach on a very sought-after block. The house is comprised of 3 levels. The entrance level has a family room, garage, lift, powder room & master suite with walk in robe and Ensuite. The lower level has a kitchen, pantry, dining, living, wine cellar, powder room, outdoor bar and pool. The upper level has 3 additional bedrooms, bathroom and terraces. The house is primarily contracted of off form concrete and concrete block as the clients wanted something very strong and stable for the ocean front site. Major Corporate Partner

This is one of the best blocks of land in Queensland. It needed an equally good design to take advantage of this. When you are in the house you know why – it is all about the view and that ocean connection from every room. Chris Clout Design 07 5474 8107 | www.chriscloutdesign.com.au

Premier Award Winner

Robin joining the Team

When a Client presents us with a project that challenges the conventional approach, we embrace the opportunity to deliver an outstanding result. In 2019 StruXi Design was honoured to receive the Premier Award “Commercial Project of the Year”, for the Longs Quarter Redevelopment at the Building Designers Association of Queensland (BDAQ) State Design Awards. This is the second consecutive year that StruXi has received this award after being recognised in 2018 for the Laundry Street Redevelopment.

After 31 years in private practice, award winning designer Robin Payne made the move to Toowoomba to join the StruXi team. Robin brings with him a wealth of experience, not only in his design ability but also in managing Client relationships. Robin has received numerous awards for his work through the Building Designers Association of Queensland (BDAQ), the National Association of Building Designers (NABD) and the Master Builders Association (MBA). Some of these awards include:

Both of these projects involved the adaptive reuse of existing commercial buildings and we appreciate and thank not only our Clients for the opportunity but also the builders (Longs Quarter Redevelopment – McNab Constructions and Laundry Street Redevelopment - Newlands Group) for allowing StruXi the freedom and trust required to deliver two outstanding projects.

• 2018 House of the Year (MBA) • 2017 Queensland House of the Year (MBA) • 2017 Australian New House of the Year (NABD) • 2017 Queensland House of the Year (BDAQ)

The Longs Quarter Redevelopment also received two category awards on the night: • Alterations/Additions – Commercial Buildings and • Best Use of James Hardie Products

The team at StruXi have enjoyed watching Robin create some amazing concepts for our Clients over the past year and cannot wait to see what he will produce in the future.

MINTCONSTRUCT

COASTAL LUXE ELEVATING THE MODERN HOME

Situated on the canal overlooking Surfers Paradise, this opulent, two-storey home fuses resort-style living with contemporary accents. Stone cladded pillars were installed at the front and rear of the home, adding a natural touch that creates a contrast between the home and the aquatic and lush surrounds. The muted colour palette of the front façade and interior complements the sleek embellishments featured throughout the home. Upon entry, guests and homeowners are treated to a spectacular, spherical showpiece. This bespoke hanging ornament creates a juxtaposition between sleek metal and rustic timber balustrades and flooring. These timber touches soften the design and add warmth throughout the home’s communal spaces. Lifting the home to new heights is the glass-panelled elevator. This feature modernises the family-friendly project and allows for ease of access between the upper and lower floors, creating a show-stopping addition to this high-end home.

58

HOME DESIGN - BUILDERS

The eye-catching traits continue in the bathroom of this chic project. A stone cladding feature wall adds a raw, stylish touch to the space, while timber cabinetry softens the sharp lines of the stone feature wall for an aesthetically pleasing textural contrast. Hanging in the corner of this contemporary bathroom is a spherical bulb that harmoniously ties in with the statement dÊcor in the entryway. Meanwhile, the kitchen boasts modern opulence. Marble splashbacks and countertops feature in both the main kitchen area and in the butler’s pantry, creating a seamless transition from one space to the next. Glass sliding doors and a large window above the rear kitchen bench maximises natural light without compromising space or style. Timber also features prominently in this space, offering different points of visual interest against the monochromatic colour scheme. Captivating views of the canal border a spacious outdoor entertaining area. A marble splashback is fitted in the exterior cooking area, tying in seamlessly with the kitchen. A large pool is a fun addition to this home, making entertaining easy, stress-free, and child-friendly.

GEOMANCER CONSTRUCTION

HAMPTONS HAVEN A CHARMING COASTAL RETREAT

For this project, Geomancer Construction was briefed with creating a family-friendly home that would suit its surroundings and incorporate contemporary Hamptons-inspired features. Located in Graceville – one of Brisbane’s oldest regions – the abode exemplifies the area’s current trend towards redevelopment and modernisation, while also honouring its history. To achieve the brief, Geomancer Construction’s in-house building designer worked closely with the clients through a series of detailed consultations, which ensured they were included in every stage of the design process. As the residence sits within the Brisbane river flood zone and the city’s overland flood plan, the design’s habitable base was raised above street level. While this proved challenging, with expert planning a layout with exceptional flow was achieved. The elevated design also created an opportunity for a large storage space to be incorporated beneath the abode.

62

HOME DESIGN - BUILDERS

Featuring James Hardie Linea boards and decking, and COLORBOND roof sheeting, the home’s façade is a stylish inclusion to the neighbourhood. Continuing the aesthetic of the exterior, the generous kitchen, living and dining area exudes coastal charm; white and blue hues are present in abundance, as are sophisticated furnishings and a host of modern inclusions. Designed for both functionality and enjoyment, the interior entertaining space offers views of the backyard pool and surrounding streetscapes. A void above the entertainment zone creates a sense of spaciousness. A connecting staircase adds visual interest, and leads up to the home’s top level, where bedrooms and a study nook are located. The indoor and outdoor zones are seamlessly joined by sliding glass doors, which are conveniently positioned within the central hub. The doors lead to a covered deck, which is an ideal place for relaxing with family and friends regardless of inclement weather.

Specialising in custom design and architectural homes, Geomancer Construction was established two years ago by Mark Hancock. Having previously worked in government and commercial spaces, Hancock has extensive experience as a project manager, and expert knowledge of the industry. Hancock understands that although projects may appear similar, they are just as unique as their owners, and this philosophy is reflected in every aspect of Geomancer Construction’s work. With an in-house building designer, and the ability to create 3D models that design and estimate each project, the company can quickly and accurately price and plan each build, ensuring clients have a solid understanding of their new home before construction begins. The company also completes lifts, raises and basements within custom homes. Servicing anywhere in south east Queensland, Geomancer Construction is a boutique building company, and only builds a select number of homes annually. This guarantees each development receives the team’s utmost attention, and a personal approach.

HEZZELIC HOMES

WHERE THE CITY MEETS THE SEA CONTEMPORARY COASTAL LIVING

Situated along the blissful coast just outside of Brisbane, this modern beach house offers outstanding views over the Wynnum Esplanade. Wanting to capture everything the Esplanade has to offer, the abode boasts a cantilevered second storey with 180 degrees of uninterrupted views over the bay, capitalising on natural sea breezes and ample sunlight. The site is a battle axe block, with access to the rear of the home via a side street, allowing space for a driveway and garage at the rear of the dwelling. This permits unhindered exposure to the eastern view of the bay and encourages maximum usage of the outdoor entertaining area and esplanade streetscape aesthetic out front. Building on a confined lot posed several design problems, but this did not hinder Hezzelic Homes in utilising the full blueprint for this breathtaking abode. Hezzelic Homes reinforced the cantilevered level with structural steel blocks placed over grid footing, supported by 17-metre-deep screw piers, giving the home maximum support on sand for years to come. Windowpanes were set directly into the structural steel so as not to limit the panoramic views from the second level.

66

HOME DESIGN - BUILDERS

Inspired by the sea breeze, the house captures a similar airy feeling throughout its open-plan design. Careful consideration was taken by Hezzelic Homes to create an outdoor entertainment area with a resort-style space to play, relax, and entertain, with interior living areas leading out to alfresco spaces on both floors. Swimming plays a large part in this foreshore residence, with a 17-metre pool along the length of the block and integrated spa with blower jets. The design is perfect for solo lap swimming or entertaining in the communal open space. The colour palette of the outdoor area is eye catching, pairing warm yellow seating and lighting with the cool tones of the tiled pool to exaggerate the importance of water and the outdoors. This forever home was constructed with accessible features; an internal lift, integrated walk-in shower, personal future-proofing, and remote pin-secure access to the property. These inclusions allow the owners to enjoy their seaside home and foreshore well into their twilight years.

AMBROSE HOMES

CONTEMPORARY MEETS COASTAL OFFERING SPACE AND SERENITY

This Hamptons-inspired home exudes luxury and elegance with enough space for the whole family to enjoy. Designed and built by Ambrose Homes, the property reflects its beautiful Queensland location with an opulent, open-plan living space and refreshing splashes of ocean blue. Ambrose Homes has expertly crafted a home with hand-pitched white ceilings, wide hallways and matte blackbutt flooring, which offers a spacious and fresh feel. The open-plan kitchen and dining areas are fitted with large square windows, allowing vast amounts of natural light to flow through the home. A spacious kitchen is the central hub of the indoor living areas. The expansive waterfall edge island bench is a particular highlight, ideal for food preparation and informal dining. Classic white cabinetry, cup-pull handles and a white subway tile splashback gives the kitchen its signature Hamptons charm. The living quarters lead out to a large outdoor entertainment area which includes an in-built barbecue, wine fridge and rustic timber wall – the perfect space for a social gathering or family event.

70

HOME DESIGN - BUILDERS

The backyard is nothing short of a tropical paradise, with huge amounts of garden space, lush greenery, subtle paving and a sensational swimming pool. The strategic corner placement of the pool maximises the available yard space and provides ample room for children to run and play. The glass pool fence offers necessary safety measures without obstructing the view of the alfresco area and home’s interior. The dwelling’s predominantly neutral colour-scheme alongside timber flooring allows homeowners the freedom to get creative with art and furnishings. The stunning bathroom is another standout of the build; complete with a floor-to-ceiling blue tiled feature wall and marble benchtop. Replete with luxurious features and Beacon lighting, this eye-catching bathroom makes clever use of space from deliberate shower placement, while bringing a more contemporary feel to the home. The four bedrooms further emphasise the home’s opulent feel, making shrewd use of storage with the inclusion of walk-in-robes and wide hallways. Elegant white skirting boards complement the home’s neutral colour scheme, brightening up each room in the house.

HOME DESIGN - INTERIOR DESIGN

A Tranquil Sanctuary

Untagged images courtesy of Unsplash

BY TEGAN LYON

The modern home is filled with multifunctional, communal spaces that invite heavy foot traffic. The contemporary Australian abode means many things to homeowners; a place to cook, workout, study, and entertain guests. While modern home design favours open-plan living, the bedroom remains an untouched sanctuary – a personal space to recharge once the day is over. For busy parents, large families, and those living in shared housing, your bedroom is your reprieve, so it should be the calmest room in your house.

We are products of our environment, and with Australians spending more time at home than ever, it’s vital that we maintain our mental health and wellbeing. While a bedroom’s interior design is ultimately a matter of preference, there are numerous design and decorating tips you can utilise to ensure your bedroom is a tranquil, soothing space. KEEP CALM AND DON’T CLUTTER A clear space is a clear mind, and the bedroom is no different. However, the bedroom is one of the easiest rooms to over-clutter. It’s tempting to fill white space or an empty surface, but a visually busy room demands attention, making us feel overwhelmed. If you’re moving into your new home or revamping your existing bedroom, 96

consider recycling or donating unnecessary items to avoiding clutter across shelves and surfaces. To minimise clutter, ensure your space features adequate storage solutions. There are various options, including recessed wall shelves, floating box or corner shelves, bookshelf walls or a walk-in wardrobe if space permits. If your bedroom has a smaller footprint, platinum storage beds offer great storage capacity with minimal visual interference. With a few touches and alterations, existing homeowners can create additional storage without any major renovation or overhaul. Opt for bedside tables with drawers, storage bench seats or invest in a larger dresser where possible. Ultimately, built-in shelves are

the perfect form of storage, simultaneously decluttering and decorating your space. With a serene, pared back design, your display shelves will be where your true personality shines through. AN EYE-FULL Colour is a significant factor in the tranquillity of a bedroom; bold, repetitive colours and elaborate patterns can be jarring, whereas bland colours can be lifeless and uninspiring. Striking the right visual balance can be achieved by minimising bright shades and patterns that are distracting or demand the eye’s attention. White shades and light, neutral colours are the perfect base for a beautiful, serene setting. Lighter colours also better reflect natural light – creating a

more spacious, airy feel. Simplicity is key when coordinating a colour palette for your bedroom. Once you have your neutral base colours, select an accent colour, and repeat through your furnishings; this can include throws, pillows, artwork, rugs, lampshades, curtains or even bedside tables. If you find that your bedroom is lacking in vibrancy, create visual interest through texture. For those revamping an existing room, use quilts, pillows, or an upholstered bedhead for a textural boost. If crafting your tranquil bedroom from scratch, consider building a timber-panelled feature wall. In addition to its visual appeal, timber is also an excellent way to introduce natural elements into your bedroom – which has a well-documented, positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. White timber panels offer a crisp, clean finish, while natural timber provides additional warmth if you do feel that colour is lacking in your décor and fittings. Patterns and colours should be used thoughtfully, so if you opt for darker walls coverings, stick to neutral shades for your furnishings. WORK BOUNDARIES If working from home, it’s important to establish clear boundaries between your bedroom and your office to clearly define work and resting periods. If you have the luxury of a home office or a study nook in your kitchen or living area, ensure that your work is confined to these zones, rather than seeping into your bedroom, otherwise unwanted clutter can become inevitable. Remove your desk from your bedroom and relocate to other communal areas to optimise both productivity and creativity. For homeowners or renters with limited space and a bedroom that doubles as an office space, a clear, neat desk is paramount. Try to cover exposed power chords and wires for a cleaner aesthetic that won’t disrupt the tranquillity of your bedroom during the day.

A TRICK OF THE LIGHT Lighting can be used to your advantage to establish your idyllic, soothing bedroom. First, capitalise on as much natural light as possible by installing large windows or skylights to create an open, inviting feel. If you’re a light sleeper or the position of your room gets a lot of sun exposure, invest in blackout curtains to ensure uninterrupted slumber in the early hours of the morning. With ample windows, natural light can be easily harnessed in your bedroom, but the placement and brightness of artificial lighting is equally important. Layering your lighting is integral to create a balance of ambient, task and accent lighting, which will ultimately dictate the mood and feel of your bedroom. During the day, natural light will act as your ambient light – or primary light source – while in the evening this is often your ceiling light. Chandeliers and pendant lights are an excellent choice and can double as a decorative statement piece. Task lighting is used for specific activities, and these fixtures can take the form of bedside or table lamps, swing arm lamps or vanity lights within the bedroom. Finally, accent lighting can be used to highlight specific features in your bedroom, such as artwork, furniture, or wall shelves, and is often used as a type of ‘mood’ lighting. Multiple light sources offer design flexibility and functionality, providing a smoother transition from day to night. Light dimmers will solidify this practise, allowing you to power-down into the night. A well-lit bedroom with considered light placement will offer the perfect environment to start and end your day. Although a tranquil bedroom requires design intention, careful forethought, and strategic lighting and furnishing, the result is a peaceful, simplistic haven that demands nothing from the inhabitant but comfort and relaxation.

HOME DESIGN - POOLS + OUTDOOR LIVING

Spot

By Bethany Hayes

A Little

Of GREEN

Whether you reside in an inner-city terrace, an apartment, or simply have a backyard with a much smaller footprint, your outdoor landscaping should not be neglected. Here, Bethany Hayes discusses how low-maintenance options such as vertical climbers, succulents and other houseplants can bring some much-needed greenery to some of the smallest and most unexpected places.

With an extensive range of living options, the humble garden can lend itself to compact inner-city terraces and apartments, adapting to new, and often smaller forms. If your outdoor landscaping situation is currently lacking, there are a number of low-maintenance ways to bring the green back for good. GO VERTICAL Good news – all gardens and outdoor areas have some element of vertical space which can be utilised. Whether that’s merely a wall, fence or trellis, naturally climbing or sprawling plants are an excellent way to add some extra green without having to add extra space. Wisteria, grapevine or star jasmine are some of the most diverse and versatile climbing additions that can be trained to grow upwards, and often thrive thanks to a shaded wall-base and sun reaching the leaves. Climbing plants can also be an excellent way to dress up an archway at the front of your home. The wisteria, known for its fragrant and 106

brightly coloured blooms, has a vigorous twisted climbing ability that offers beautiful foliage in autumn. Wisterias are easy to grow and can climb up a house wall or any sturdy structure provided there is enough cable support. If you’re looking for something lighter that can be grown through a trusty piece of trellis or on a balcony ledge, the saucer-shaped morning glory is an ideal decorating vine and flower that thrives in Australia’s subtropical climate. BEAUTY IN EVERY CORNER If your outdoor space is a shared one, quite limited, or you prefer to spend your time indoors, consider the humble houseplant and a range of succulents to brighten up your home. With good quality potting mix, alongside regular watering, indoor plants such as the pothos, dracaena and peace lily are excellent indoor plants that require little attention. Combined with some natural sunlight or a plain, white wall, indoor plants can transform a room into a sanctuary of relaxation, brimming with clean air and lush plants.

Hanging baskets are also an excellent way to increase the amount of greenery to any indoor space or a small-scale outdoor area. Dangling from your interior or exterior walls, fence posts or porch, hanging baskets consume minimal space, but add plenty of beauty for homeowner to admire. Devil’s ivy is a popular choice as it purifies the air and removes indoor pollutants, while its touch-trailing leaves will grow almost anywhere. Picture an elegant white hanging basket, troughs or even a mosaic vase with cuttings – the opportunities are endless. Succulents are the most commonly known low-maintenance option for busy homeowners. Whether placed in the middle of an outdoor table, across window-sills or in the corner of a room, succulents can not only help to purify the air, but add an extra splash of green (or even purple as they grow pigment) to your home. For those looking to spice up their front façade or entryway, having large potted plants in either side of the front door can be prime place to get

naturally drawn to vibrant shades, so consider incorporating red gerberas, sunflowers, or pansies into your landscaping. If you prefer a more neutral colour scheme, choosing white plants can be an effective way to make your garden glow during the twilight hours. Synthetic turf can also be laid in small patio spaces to add that extra bit of green. CHOOSE QUALITY OVER QUANTITY If you only have a balcony or small patio space to work with, having a small corner of pot plants to sit in the sunlight can be an excellent choice. Working with minimal space can be made easier by choosing unique storage options; planting in small ceramic containers, leaving herbs to grow on a sunny kitchen window, or even potting an ivy plant in an unused teapot. Despite limited space, plants can be maintained and thrive both in and out of the home, provided you are using a good quality potting mix and giving your plants the right amount of love

some greenery in. Blooming hydrangeas can make an impressive impact upon entering the house. ALL IN A REFLECTION The old magician’s trick of using mirrors is also a very clever way for you to create the illusion of extra space within your garden. Full length mounted mirrors can create the appearance of a natural looking portal or doorway within your garden, while smaller, interestingly shaped mirrors can be used to reflect plants and flowers, creating interesting lighting effects. Even if you only have minimal greenery or just a few pots plants, using mirrors will not only give the illusion of a fuller garden, but can also brighten up any shaded corners of your outdoor landscape, adding reflective light, balance or be placed on a low level to showcase your more beautiful flowers. For what you might be lacking in space you can certainly make up for in colour. The eye is

through sunlight and water. With an abundance of options to maximise small garden spaces, there’s nothing to keep you from getting your green on!
