ONCE AGAIN, WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THE TREMENDOUS COMMITMENT MADE BY OUR STUDENT ATHLETES AS THEY PURSUE EXCELLENCE IN THE ATHLETIC AND ACADEMIC ARENAS. Our players and coaches have invested time, energy, and effort in and out of the classroom, so they could achieve their goal of representing John T. Hoggard High School. As a new season begins, a team never knows where the journey will take them, but our teams are looking forward to creating memories and bonds that last a lifetime. Each year, we have over 700 students involved in our athletics programs. In addition to our teams that compete on the fields and courts, we are also very proud of our cheerleaders, dance team, and marching band. Last year Hoggard once again won the Wells Fargo Cup, signifying our place as the most outstanding overall athletic program within our conference. Hoggard won conference championships in men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, lacrosse, and swimming. Additionally, our men’s football, basketball, and track teams were conference champions last year. Our softball team won the eastern regional championship advancing all the way to the state title series. We would like to thank our coaches and athletes for their time and commitment. We would like to thank our boosters, students, alumni, and the sponsors in this media guide for their support of Hoggard and our athletic programs! This support is a critical portion of what makes our success possible. Thanks for being at the game tonight and supporting us throughout the season. Enjoy the accomplishments of the players and coaches and the efforts of the game officials. Your presence this evening lets them know how valuable their participation is. Head Coach
Thomas Bowker >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Bowker was born and raised in Wilmington, NC, and graduated from Hoggard High School in 2000. He thanks two wonderful parents who guided him and pushed him through sports. He started all 4 years at UNC Charlotte where he earned Freshman AllAmerican honors, and 3-times All Conference Team. He finished 3rd in stolen bases at UNCC and tied at 9th for career batting average of .355. Coach Bowker has 2 beautiful children, Trace (7 yrs old) and Brielle (5 yrs old) and an amazing wife, Blythe. You can often find his family out supporting the Vikings! This is Coach Bowker’s third year as the head coach and he looks forward to a great season!

A MESSAGE FROM THE SOFTBALL
HEAD COACH LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2020 SEASON WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS as we return 8 starters from last year’s Eastern Regional Championship Team...one game away from winning the State Championship. We will be led by DH Jaclyn Jordan (Sr), SS Icess Tresvik (Jr), outfielder Amber Small (Jr), outfielder Isabella Colbert (Jr), 3B Skyler Walker (Jr), C Sydney Short (Soph), 1B Allie Royal (Soph) and 2B Kira Soodek (Soph). The only question remaining...who will follow our All-State Graduate Pitcher Jesse Mathis on the mound. 2017 All-District 2nd Team: Jaclyn Jordan 2018 All-District 2nd Team: Jaclyn Jordan, Jesse Mathis, Icess Tresvik 2018 All-District Pitcher of the Year: Jesse Mathis 2018 All-State Team: Jesse Mathis 2019 All-District Team: Jesse Mathis, Jaclyn Jordan, Icess Tresvik, Sydney Short 2019 All-District Pitcher of the Year: Jesse Mathis 2019 All-State Team: Jesse Mathis, Icess Tresvik, Sydney Short 2019 All-State Pitcher of the Year East: Jesse Mathis Seasons 2014 and 2015 ended in the 2nd round of the State Play-offs, 2016 ended in the 3rd round of the State Play-offs, 2017 ended in the 1st round of the State Play-offs. 2018 ended in the 4th round of the State Play-offs. 2019 ended in the State Championship losing 2 out of 3 games Our Goal this year: Win the Conference and the State.
Colleen St. Ledger >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach St.Ledger graduated from Arundel High School (Maryland) in 1984. She played volleyball, basketball and softball. She was a 3-year letterman in all three. She attended UNCW for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She played softball for the Seahawks from 1984-1988. She taught 6.5 years at Pender High School and 24 years at John T Hoggard High School. Coach St.Ledger retired from the North Carolina Public School System after 30.5 years of service. She is presently teaching mathematics at Cape Fear Academy. Coach St is entering her 25th season as the Softball Coach at John T Hoggard High School. Coach St comes from a good old Catholic family with 4 brothers and 2 sisters, 14 nieces and nephews, 8 great nieces and nephews, and wonderful parents. Coach St, Coach “Jeep” St.Ledger (brother), and two nieces Megan St.Ledger Wilhelm and Erin St.Ledger Lea were inducted in the John T. Hoggard Athletics Hall of Fame (2020). Her family has been Washington Redskin Ticket Season holders since the 1970’s (which she has inherited.) Mom and Dad...thanks for all your love and support.

Steven J. Treman, DDS >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Treman, referred to as “Doc” by lacrosse players and the lacrosse community, graduated from Wittenberg University in 1983, where he played Midfield for the Tigers and was captain during his senior year. He graduated from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1987 and married his wife, Amy Remaley, that same year. He moved from Hamburg, NY to Wilmington, NC in 1989. Steven and Amy have two children, Kyle and Jennifer, both of whom graduated from Hoggard High School. One of his favorite times as coach was when both of his children were involved in the lacrosse program in 2007. He was an assistant coach for Hoggard High School from 2000 – 2006, and the head lacrosse coach since 2007. The Hoggard varsity team has won the conference for the past twelve years and has seen several of its players go on to play in college lacrosse programs. Watching the sport growth in our area and to be part of its success has been a proud moment. He loves animals; his dogs Moe and Brody are a big part of his non lacrosse life.

much we have grown as individuals and as a team through a lot of hard work and commitment in the off season. Each day we strive to be better than the day before, whether that is through skills, conditioning or being there to encourage and challenge each other. Erin Redmond >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Redmond was born and raised in Vermont. She graduated from St. Michael’s College in 2003 where she played Varsity lacrosse and JV basketball for the Purple Knights. In 2005, she helped Hoggard parents and players that wanted to play lacrosse begin the Hoggard Women’s Lacrosse program. The program has grown tremendously over the years, now running a JV program as well. Teams have carried US Lacrosse AllAmericans, US Lacrosse Academic All-Americans, Conference Players of the year, and First and Second team players. Many graduating players have gone off to play lacrosse in college on varsity programs or club programs.

HEAD COACH WELCOME TO THE 2020 SOCCER SEASON. The staff and players are very excited about this season and are looking forward to building on the foundation and traditions set by those who have come before us. It is our goal to make everyone associated with Hoggard Women’s Soccer proud not only of our accomplishments on the pitch, but also of what we accomplish in the classroom and in our community.
Despite the loss of 4 key seniors to graduation, we are returning 19 players from last year’s team that reached the Eastern Region Finals of the North Carolina High School Playoffs, and have our sights set high yet once again. To those who have supported us in the past and to those who are supporting us now, to our sponsors, our community, our administration, our families and friends, we say THANK YOU! Hoggard Women’s Soccer How much can you accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit?
Justin Schatz >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Coach Schatz is originally from Knightdale NC. Coach Schatz came to Wilmington on scholarship to attend and play soccer at UNCW. After earning his degree in Health and Physical Education, Coach Schatz went on to play professional soccer with the Wilmington Hammerheads. After his professional career, Coach Schatz began teaching and coaching at Hoggard, as well as earning his M.Ed. in Health Education. Coach Schatz’s coaching experience includes several coaching licenses, experience with college coaching, coaching with the local club teams and has been the Asst. Varsity Men’s Coach, Head JV Men’s Coach, Asst. Varsity Women’s Coach, Roland Grise Middle School boys and girls coach, and is now the Varsity Women’s Soccer Coach. Coach Schatz is married to his lovely wife, Anna, and has two daughters, Lailey and Liza.

strongest teams we have had in years. We are returning 5 starters from last season. We are looking forward to the first MEC Conference Title since 2014 and making another run to the State playoffs with both team and individuals. Jay Campbell >> VARSITY HEAD COACH This is Coach Campbell’s first season as the Hoggard Head Tennis Coach and third year as a Hoggard teacher. He served as assistant coach last season. Coach Campbell played varsity tennis at Thomasville High School in Thomasville, NC. He received the MVP award for Tennis his senior year. He participated in intramural tennis at N.C. State University in Raleigh, NC. He graduated from N.C. State and received a Masters in Education from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA.

this season as they look to improve on their 12th place in State from last year. With 2 returning first team All-Conference players in Tate Bowyer and Stewart Kinlaw the Vikings will try to challenge for a conference championship in a tough Mideastern Conference.
Curt Budd >> VARSITY HEAD COACH This is Coach Budd’s 16th year at the helm of the Hoggard Men’s Golf team. Under Coach Budd, the Vikings have won 4 conference championships, with several team and individual state and regional playoff appearances. He is the President-Elect of the NC Men’s Golf Coaches Association and last year had the honor of being the Head Coach for the East Boys team for the Tarheel Cup (NC all-star game for golf).

HEAD COACH ON BEHALF OF THE JTH VIKING MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD PROGRAM AND THE OTHER COACHES, I would like to welcome you to the 2020
Hoggard High School Men’s Track and Field Season. In the past 53 years of JTH Track and Field the Men’s program has won 4 Conference Championships in school history. Two of these four championships have come the last two seasons so we are excited about chasing three in a row and have 19 returning athletes that competed in our conference championship last season. Josh Carnelley >> BOYS HEAD COACH/THROWS Josh Carnelley is a resident of Hampstead, NC. after moving from his home state of Iowa six years ago. Coach Carnelley has been married to his wife Christina for 18 years and they have two children Alexis and Jackson. Coach Carnelley has worked at Hoggard for the last six years as a school counselor and throws coach for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams. Before moving to North Carolina from Iowa Coach Carnelley worked in several schools in Iowa over a ten-year span as a school counselor and coach. Coach Carnelley has coached track and field for eight years before his move to North Carolina and other sports such as football, golf, and baseball. Coach Carnelley really enjoys being a school counselor and a coach. As a throws coach these last 14 years (between IA and NC) he has coached 11 athletes to the state meet, with two having top three finishes, and last year the Hoggard throwers qualified 7 for regionals and one went on to the state meet. Coach Carnelley is excited to lead this year’s men’s track field team and still having the opportunity to work directly with the Hoggard men and women throwers.

HEAD COACH THE HOGGARD WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM IS COMING OFF A PRODUCTIVE SEASON THAT SAW THEM FALL JUST SHORT OF WINNING THE MIDEASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, losing to eventual champion Laney by 8 points. Despite having to replace the production of multischool record holder Keygan Pettigrew who graduated, the Vikings are looking for another successful season led by seniors, Cheyenne Newkirk (hurdles), Jenna Pellizzari (distance), and Leah Schwagerl (pole vault). However, to achieve the heights we want to reach will require the development and productivity of many of our underclass athletes. We are looking forward to competing in the great tradition of Hoggard athletics.

2020 COACHING STAFF
Billy Mason >> GIRLS HEAD COACH/DISTANCE & JUMPS A lifelong resident of Wilmington, Coach Mason graduated from Hoggard High School (1970), Wake Forest University (1974), and the School of Law at the University of North Carolina (1977). Coach Mason has been married for thirty-six years and he and his wife, Debbie, are the parents of twin sons, Allen and Eric, both of whom are also Hoggard graduates. This is his seventeenth-year teaching social studies at Hoggard. Coach Mason began coaching track and field at Hoggard in 2005 and served as the Head Men’s Coach until 2013, at which time he became the Head Women’s Coach. During his tenure, the Vikings have won one Men’s and one Women’s Mideastern Conference Championship.
