Mercer Island High School and the Athletic Department are excited to begin the 2019-2020 Islander baseball season! We finished our KingCo season in exciting fashion last year, with big wins in the post-season tournament. Many of our top players return this season and with their collected experience in big games and intense competition, we believe that this team will continue the tradition of excellence that Mercer Island Baseball has created. FOR STUDENT PARTICIPANTS, we ask that you seriously accept the responsibility and privilege of representing Mercer Island High School and our community to display positive public action at all times. We ask that you demonstrate respect for opponents and umpires before, during, and after each contest and that you live up to the high standard of sportsmanship established by the school and league. Please accept favorable and unfavorable decisions, as well as victory and defeat, with humility. FOR PARENTS, please encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, and officials at every contest. Your continued demonstration of positive behavior will help the student-athletes throughout their playing experience and later in life. Demand a sports environment that is free from drugs, tobacco and alcohol and refrain from their use at all Mercer Island High School events. Do your best to make athletic participation fun for your student. Help your student see that, in sports as in life, they will sometimes play well and lose, or play poorly and win. Parents can help model the type of behavior we have come to expect from our studentathletes. Please encourage your student to participate in sports for the enjoyment of the game.

FOR ALL FANS, please realize that a ticket represents a privilege to observe a contest and demonstrate support for high school activities. A ticket is not a license to verbally assault others or to be generally obnoxious. Respect decisions made by the contest officials. Remember, without them, there would be no game. The sports rivalries between our school and others can be a wonderful gift. They can motivate students to reach beyond their limits to performances that inspire us. But these rivalries can also become unhealthy and can lead people to insult, dehumanize, and even injure others. Good sportsmanship is an essential part of all of the Mercer Island athletic teams. It is our goal to have Mercer Island recognized for our sense of fair play, outstanding effort, and character. We ask that players, coaches, parents and spectators uphold these values at all of our events. All cheers should be in support of our team – not directed at the opponents. BE LOUD. BE PROUD. BE POSITIVE. We had several games broadcasted last year on our student-run radio station, KMIH 88.9 “The Bridge”, and hope to continue with more games in 2020. Finally, I want to thank all of the fans for supporting Islander baseball and look forward to seeing you in the stands!

>>A MESSAGE FROM MIHS BASEBALL

HEAD COACH WOODY Hard to believe this year marks my eighth season as the head coach of Mercer Island high school. If my previous experience has taught me anything, it’s that the annual anxieties that surround the preseason would soon be alleviated and boy were they ever! Tryouts revealed another talented and competitive group. Led by a large and very underrated senior class that had eagerly awaited their moment. Our first nine practices were executed perfectly, and our annual scrimmage was the most exciting and complete scrimmage I've experienced in my time as HC! It’s fair to say the excitement was palpable. That excitement would soon give way to feelings of the unknown as our season has been placed on hold until April 24th. The circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the corona virus have created a pause in normalcy that is being shared worldwide. As difficult as this transition has been for our players and families, recent life experiences have truly taught me that things can always be worse, and I’m forced to search for a positive in all of this. Which leads me to this question: What is baseball going to mean to you once we get back on the field? Are you going to go a bit harder, possibly stay a little longer after the game or perhaps even get to the field earlier! My hope is that this hiatus will rekindle our respective love of this game and provide some clarity for what’s really important going forward. So where do we go from here? Well, let’s start with what we know. The WIAA has stated that if we get back to school on the 24th of April there will be a spring season! Between now and then I’m going to do exactly what we ask our players to do. Focus on your job and worry about what you can control! That’s all any of us can do during these times. Until then, stay safe and I can’t wait to see you at the ballpark!

Coach Woody

For the 2nd time in 3 years, Woody led the team to the 2017 WIAA 3A State Finals with a 3rd place finish. As a player at Richland High School, Woody led the Big 9 League in batting average and RBIs, and was voted All League, All District, All State, USA Today Honorable Mention All-American as a senior. He helped lead his team to District and Regional Championships. For the past twelve years, Orgill has been a teacher in the Bellevue School District -- he recently began teaching elementary physical education and previously was an assistant coach at Sammamish HS. Last year, he was hired to be the 13U head coach for the Baden Baseball organization (from Mercer Island) and currently coaches the 14U team. Previous to coaching, Josh has an extensive playing history as well. He then transferred to Central Washington University where he graduated in 2003. Baseball has always been a focal point and drive in Josh's life, whether it be the passion for the game or the lessons it can bring to everyday life. It's this belief and excitement for the game that has helped form his coaching philosophy to his ballplayers at every practice and game. KENNY TERHUNE >> JUNIOR VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
