READING THE GREENS Putting is the downfall of many otherwise great golfers. One thing that commonly trips people up is the grain of the green. The grain refers to the direction that the grass is growing, generally towards the setting sun. Once you are on the green take a look at your ball and the surrounding grass. Move in a circle around your ball until you notice the grass looks shinier or lighter behind your ball; this indicates you are looking in the direction of the grain. When putting against the grain your ball will move an average of 25-50% slower; with the grain, that much faster; and across the grain (neither with or against but rather at an angle) your ball is likely to veer to the side regardless of the slope of the green. Although it may take some practice, learning the grain of a green before you putt is sure to take a stroke or two off your final score.

SPEEDING UP PLAY > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Have a game plan on how you want to play the course. Carry a spare ball or two. Take no mulligan or practice shots. Decide what club you will need before you get to the ball. Be prepared to play when it is your turn. Make your practice swings while others are playing. When out of the hole and heading for a triple-bogey, pick up. Watch where you hit your own ball, so it can be found quickly. Watch other putts to learn the speed and break on the greens. Repair ball marks and divots while waiting for other players. Mark your scores as you walk to the next tee. Be conscious of the lost ball rule in looking for a lost ball. Putt when ready, don’t wait for outside players. Forget honors, the first man on the tee should hit it. Play when ready in fairway, even simultaneously. Shorter distance players hit first, when group ahead is out of range.

GOLF STRETCHING ROUTINE Golfers can attest to the fact that athleticism is crucial to refining skills, using proper form, and maintaining a solid score. Get warmed up and golf ready with some easy stretches before hitting the course. Golf stretches help promote a fluid, full golf swing, increase power, and reduce the risk of muscle strain and injury. By implementing a consistent stretching routine, players can improve golf fitness and flexibility, and ultimately enhance on-course performance.

CORE ROTATION & HIP STRETCH Ÿ Hold driver across your chest, keeping head and neck straight. Ÿ Turn your shoulders, core and hips from the address position and hold this stretch. SPINE & HIPS STRETCH Ÿ Holding the driver with both hands squat down slightly so that your hips are behind your feet. Ÿ Keep your back flat and straight. Ÿ Keep your driver in a central position between your feet. Ÿ Reach forward with the core and arms, then stretch side to side. FULL SIDE STRETCH Ÿ Hold club with arms straight overhead. Ÿ Keep neck straight with head and shoulders facing forward. Ÿ Slowly bend to one side and repeat on opposite. SHOULDER & TRICEPS STRETCH Ÿ Place one arm straight across chest. Place hand on elbow and pull arm towards chest and hold. Repeat with other arm. Ÿ Place one hand behind back with elbow in air. Place other hand on elbow and gently pull towards head. Hold and repeat with other arm.

CORRECTING SWING Are bad shots plaguing you? It’s hard to have fun on the course if you aren’t getting the distance and accuracy you expect from your golf shots. If your swing is in need of a fix, nothing beats going back to basics. Fixing your fundamentals is the quickest way to improve. In fact, common quick tips are just clever ways of teaching these time-tested moves. HOOK Play the ball back of your normal location and align the leading edge of the clubface square to the baseline of the inclined plane. PULL HOOK Play the ball at your normal location and close the clubface. SLICE Play the ball ahead of your normal location and align the leading edge of the clubface square to the baseline of the inclined plane. PUSH SLICE Play the ball at your normal location and open the clubface.

BALL MARK REPAIR

Correctly repairing ball marks not only restores a smooth surface and helps keep grass healthy — it is part of our obligation to the game and to help take care of the courses we play. Immediately and correctly repairing ball marks helps grass on the greens recover much faster, but failing to do so leaves an unfixable blemish that will take weeks to heal. These simple steps take just seconds and help keep our course well maintained and in top shape.

Ÿ1 STEP ONE Discard turf that is not attached. Insert tool forks on high side of ball mark and pull sod slightly down and toward the center of the ball mark. Ÿ2 STEP TWO Bring edges of mark together by gently twisting sod toward the middle of mark. Do not lift the center of the ball mark. Lifting center results in dead spots on the green that take weeks to heal. Ÿ3 STEP THREE After the turf has been re-established with grass on top of the mark, smooth the surface by gently tapping down with putter head or foot.

GOLF ETIQUETTE

SAND TRAPS

Finding yourself in a bunker is enough of a challenge without the added difficulties of a bad lie in an old footstep. Follow these easy steps for quick bunker-grooming and your fellow golfer will thank you!

Ÿ1 STEP ONE Enter the bunker from the point that’s closest to your ball, but most level to the adjacent playing surface. Exit the bunker along the same path as you entered to reduce the amount of raking. Ÿ2 STEP TWO Avoid climbing on steep bunker faces (you can damage the lip of the bunker and displace too much sand). Ÿ3 STEP THREE Be careful not to pull excess sand to the lip of the bunker. Alternate between pulling sand toward you and pushing it back. This will create a relatively even surface without displacing too much sand. Ÿ4 STEP FOUR After raking, place bunker rake inside the bunker, parallel to the line of play.

DRIVING RANGE CHART Help gauge your progress and save strokes on the course. Knowing the exact distance you hit your clubs replaces guessing with real numbers and is helpful in determining club choice quickly and easily on the course. Knowing your distances is also useful when evaluating your club inventory. Usually golfers get 8 - 12 yards between irons and 13 - 17 yards between fairway metals. Filling in the estimated yardage column first often proves that many of us have a tough time simply guessing how far we hit the ball. Try it out next time you are at the range! # OF BUCKETS

UNDERSTANDING GOLF SWING 1 ADDRESS: The Setup Standing tall with upright posture, the body’s weight is evenly distributed between the heels and balls of the feet. The arms and hands, forming a “V” shape, are relaxed.

2 TAKE AWAY: The Backswing Left arm and hand swing the club back on a slight inside path. Hands and arms move in sequence with the rotation of the upper torso until the left arm becomes parallel to the ground. The knees remain bent.

3 TOP: The Apex of the Swing Left shoulder is tucked under the chin. The hips turn away from the target, achieving full balance. On a full swing, the shaft of the club is parallel with the ground, with the head of the club pointing at the target.

4 IMPACT: The Point of Contact The club returns square to the target and is now able to extend forward along the intended line of flight. With the hands slightly in front of the ball, the shaft leans toward the target, creating a divot that starts after, not before, the clubface contacts the ball.

5 FINISH: The Follow Through The impetus of the club through impact carries the club in a freewheeling motion. The arms extend over the left shoulder, with the elbows out in front of the body. Belly button points up and toward the target, with all weight on the left.
