Iceland, a country on my list for a while now and it happens to be on the list of a couple of friends too. So the decision was made to embark on this journey, we booked a flight and a camper for a trip of about two weeks in August 2019. We landed in Akureyri, a city in the north of Iceland, and picked up our camper. This wasn’t the best start as the camper had a bad smell, though it was quickly resolved with a temporary rental car and a night in a hotel. One of the first things we did in Iceland was to take a hot bath in the geothermal heated Mývatn Nature Baths that smell like sulphur. We also got to see the cute looking puffins in Borgarfjörður, tried to hike to the Stigafoss waterfall and climbed the Falljökull glacier. We visited the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum as well to have a look at how Hákarl, fermented Greenland shark, is made and I had to taste this myself. Furthermore we saw a lot of waterfalls though each of them with their own characteristics. For example the Dettifoss which is enormously powerful! Or The Seljalandsfoss, the waterfall you can walk behind. And the Hraunfossar, the wide waterfall of which the water comes out of a rock wall which is a unique sight! The highlight for me however was Landmannalaugar which can only be reached with a 4WD vehicle. There we did a hike through the Laugahraun lava field that is filled with black obsidian and where steam is coming out of the ground, an amazing sight! We also climbed to the top of Mt. Brennisteinsalda from which we had an gorgeous view of the various coloured mountains and an overview of the black Laugahraun lava field. Such an exceptional experience! Iceland is a natural beauty!
ABOUT ICE L AND Iceland is the most sparsely populated country of Europe and highly geologically active. This shaped the landscape resulting in an abundance of volcanoes, hot springs, waterfalls and geysers. Furthermore about 11% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, among them is the biggest glacier of Europe; the Vatnajökull glacier. Combined with the lack of trees, Iceland has a barren but beautiful landscape which they also use to their advantage in the form of geothermal energy. Iceland is a pioneer in the use of geothermal energy. Reykjavik and Akureyri, two of the bigger cities, are powered and heated this way. Even the pavements are heated up to keep them snow- and ice-free in winter time! The Icelanders themselves are proud of their Vikings heritage and the Icelandic language which has barely changed over the years. They even come up with new Icelandic words instead of adopting new words from other languages. Icelandic names are patronyms and so the last name is made using the first name of the father (sometimes mother) with the addition of “son”(son) or “dottir”(daughter). Some examples of Icelandic last names: Guðmundsdóttir, Hrafnsson, Finnbogadóttir and Sigurðsson. The cuisine of Iceland consists for a good part of (dried) fish and lamb, the latter with which the traditional lamb soup is made. Then there’s Skyr, a sort of cheese-yoghurt that is a typical Icelandic. And the most famous of all, fermented Greenland shark; Hákarl.
