WELCOME TO THE 11TH ANNUAL BENDFILM FESTIVAL: A CELEBR ATION OF INDEPENDENT CINEMA

“Welcome” is exactly how this community made me feel when I took the position as Director of BendFilm – Central Oregon’s most beloved cultural institution. I have been overwhelmed by the support all of you have shown in my short time here. Your enthusiastic encouragement was a huge vote of confidence to me and the Board. It allows us to focus on expanding and improving our programs to provide the best public service to Bend that we can. And I cannot be more thrilled to present our premiere program – our 11th Annual Film Festival. The films in this year’s program are among the very best currently on the festival circuit. We are so honored to bring these films and the filmmakers to Bend. And luckily for all of us, we do not have to import all of our films from outside the area. There is a very healthy filmmaking community right here in Central Oregon and we will be screening the best of locally made films. In addition, for the first time during the festival, we will be screening Native American-themed films at the Warm Springs Reservation. One of our main goals moving forward is to nurture and support the Central Oregon filmmaking community. These initiatives will jumpstart our new programs which are designed to promote and support filmmaking in Central Oregon. I would like to thank the BendFilm Board of Directors, especially for bringing me - a big city boy to one of the greatest towns our country has to offer.

I would also like to thank the Board for volunteering countless hours to ensure that BendFilm continues to be one of the top film festivals and cultural organizations in the country. Our screening committee also donates immeasurable hours to watch all of the films that are submitted. Their passion about film is the reason this program is as strong as it is. I would also like to thank the Advisory Committee for their invaluable input. Members of this committee are among Bend’s most active and informed citizens and with their support, there is little we cannot do. I would also like thank the 600 volunteers who contributed each year since 2004. The incredible volunteer spirit I have seen in Bend is extremely unique. Last, but most definitely not least, I would like to thank our members, sponsors and donors. They are truly the lifeblood of this organization. This Festival has always been “For Bend and by Bend.” It is an honor for me, and for all those mentioned above, to work so tirelessly on your behalf. Director BendFilm Festival

BENDFILM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

In developing the BF logo, various concepts were considered, from film reels to the emotive qualities of independence. However, it seemed to be more fitting to leave the interpretation to the creatives that would be involved in the festival, but also in the festivals to come. The colon in the logo is taken from the film strip and represents the openness of possibilities that lie in every festival's unique expressions and varying layers. BENDFILM PARTNERSHIP

WARM SPRINGS WELCOMES BENDFILM The Museum At Warm Springs is delighted to partner with the BendFilm Festival and the Warm Springs K-8 Academy to screen Native American independent films in Warm Springs. The BendFilm Festival is a fantastic event and their willingness to reach out to Warm Springs will encourage young filmmakers in Warm Springs.

Proud Sponsor of BendFilm

Both of the selected films are near to the hearts of Tribal Members. Return of the River (p. 32) is important to Tribal members because the 1955 Bonneville Dam’s destruction of Celilo Falls still brings tears. Winter in the Blood (p. 24) is based on the well-read James Welch book and was produced by Sherman Alexie. Alexie is a well-respected friend of Warm Springs. In 2008, The Museum presented Alexie with the Twanat Award. The Twanat Award was initiated by the Board of Directors of The Museum At Warm Springs in 2003 to honor individuals whose tireless work on behalf of Native Americans is an example to all Americans. The new Warm Springs K-8 Academy and the 509J School District have graciously allowed us to show the films in the magnificent gym at the Academy that is decorated with beautiful Eagle murals by Warm Springs artist Foster Kalama. This showing will be an opportunity for communities beyond Warm Springs to see the new school and join the Warm Springs Community. We give our thanks also to the work of the members of the Central Oregon Arts and Culture Alliance (ACA). The ACA has as its core the desire of the membership to diverse arts organizations together to create opportunities for all communities in Central Oregon to participate in the Arts. BENDFILM GUIDE 2014 / 9

WHERE TO BUY TICKETS The easiest, fastest, cheapest and best way to get tickets is to purchase them online at www.bendfilm.org and print your ticket at home. During the Festival, you will also be able to purchase last minute tickets at the Hub, but only during the operating hours (see above)****. You will most likely have to wait in a line at the Hub, which may make you miss the film you most want to see. There will be no pre-sale tickets for films at the Tin Pan Theater. We recommend that all pass holders and those who want to purchase tickets come to the Tin Pan Theater 30 minutes before show time. Non-pass holders will be able to purchase RUSH tickets at the door if there is space.

INDIVIDUAL TICKETS:

If you intend to view only a few films during the festival weekend, you will probably want to purchase individual film tickets. Again, the fastest, easiest and best way to get tickets is to purchase online and print at home. Tickets are priced at $11 online, or $12 at The Hub or at the door. Shorts that play with features or whole Shorts Blocks cannot be broken up. In other words, tickets cannot be sold for particular, individual short films.

PASSES:

To absorb as many films as possible with VIP treatment, we recommend you purchase a festival pass. If a venue has enough seats you will get priority seating over ticket buyers if, and only if, you arrive 20 minutes or more before the start of the show. We recommend pass holders

CHILD CARE OPTION: This year BendFilm is partnering with Bend Montessori to provide affordable and safe child care so you and your partner can enjoy the Fest and a night on the town. Space is limited and tickets are only available on-line. Please visit www.bendfilm.org/2014festival/child-care/ for details and tickets.

arrive 30 minutes before the show for shows at the Tin Pan, McMenamins and the Old Stone Church - venues that often sellout. The Tin Pan Theater has only 29 seats. Therefore, if 15 pass holders are in line 20 minutes before the show, they will gain entry and priority seating. If 14 people are in line to buy tickets, they will all get in. The theater will be full. Pass holders that come after 20 minutes before showtime will then not gain entry. Please wear your Festival Pass at all times during the festival. Passes are NON-TRANSFERABLE

FULL FESTIVAL PASS, $250

This assures express access to all components of the festival: Single admission to the Opening Night Film at 5:30 p.m. and the Opening Night Reception at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9th; single admission to the BendFilm Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 11th; and priority seating* at all films, though with limitations.

FULL FILM PASS, $150

If films are the only things that really matter to you - if you'd rather skip the party, food and cocktails to pack a few more films into your weekend - then this is the pass for you. It allows priority seating* at all films, including the Opening Night Film, though with limitations*. * Priority seating means that pass holders get priority seating over ticket holders if they arrive at the venue no later than 20 MINUTES prior to show time, and the show is not at capacity from other pass holders.

RUSH LINE

If seats remain available after ticket holders and pass holders have been seated, tickets for those seats will be sold to those waiting in the Rush Line. This is for last-minute film buffs willing to take their chances to get an empty seat. We recommend arriving at least a half-hour early at the theater to take your place in the Rush Line. Rush Line tickets are $12 at the door. This year, there will be no tickets available for presale at the Tin Pan Theater due to limited seating.

WILL CALL

*We highly recommend you buy your tickets online and print the ticket at home. This will help you avoid long lines at the Hub. Please note Hub hours. Will call will close with Hub. Please plan accordingly & print tickets at home if attending later films.

FILM FATALES

Friday, October 10th, 2014

Friday, October 10th, 2014 10:30 AM – noon According to recent studies by the DGA and Sundance Institute, less than 5% of the top grossing Hollywood films and 15% of episodic television were directed by women in 2014. Less than a third of the speaking roles in the top 500 films over the past five years were given to women. As audiences increasingly value authentic new stories with women at their centers, female writers and directors are finding more ways to collaborate to bring these narratives to the screen. Based in New York, with chapters sprouting across the globe, Film Fatales is a collective of female filmmakers who have written or directed at least one feature narrative or documentary film. By offering a space for mentorship, peer networking and direct participation, Film Fatales hopes to promote the creation of more stories by and about women. Joining us for this panel: Mo Perkins, director, Last Time You Had Fun; Luisa Conlon, producer, Five Star; Anne de Mare, director, The Homestretch;

Leah Meyerhoff's debut feature film I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS premiered in competition at SXSW 2014. Her previous short films have screened in over 200 film festivals, won a dozen awards, and aired on IFC, PBS, LOGO and MTV. She has been shortlisted for the Student Academy Awards and Gotham Awards and received high profile grants from IFP, the Tribeca Film Institute and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation. She has been featured in Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times and starred on the docudrama Film School on IFC.

TACKLING THE TOUGH ISSUES 1:15 PM – 2:45 PM Making a film is half the battle. Once it’s out there, the film and its contents are now open to the public’s interpretation, appreciation and – at times – ire. Filmmakers often know what they’re getting into when they tackle certain subjects, but sometimes the public’s scrutiny comes as a total surprise. This panel consists of brave filmmakers that took on challenging subjects. They’ll share their war stories in getting their films made in the first place, their preparation for the public response and learning that making the film was only half the battle. Joining us for this panel: Diana Whitten, director, Vessel; Bryan Storkel, producer, Little Hope Was Arson; Michael Gough & Cammie Pavesic, directors, Add the Words; James Codoyannis, producer, F(l)ag Football; Jessica Woodbury, producer, Daylight Come: Hope After Rape in the Congo. ECO FILMS: THE SETTING AS SUBJECT

WORKING INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM

Saturday, October 11th, 2014

Saturday, October 11th, 2014

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM A film’s setting is often an integral character, but seldom is the setting of the natural world the main character. The natural world is vast and interconnected. It takes its storytellers all over the globe, in all seasons, and introduces them to all the interesting personalities who are either offending or defending it. Our guests and directors will talk about why they chose to tell the stories they did, the difficulty in telling these stories and the impact they hope to make or have made.

1:15 PM – 2:45 PM Most artists ultimately want to make a living at their craft. Through hard work, determination, knowing the right people and perhaps a little bit of luck, a small percentage of artists achieve their dream. Oftentimes, that dream comes at a price. Hollywood horror stories are a dime a dozen, but then again…these people didn’t have to resort to selling insurance. Our guests and directors will discuss in length how they built their careers from being “indie” to working “in”side the Hollywood system and the ups and downs of each.

Joining us for this panel: Jessica Plumb, director, Return of the River; Barry Opper, producer, Slingshot; Julie Buck, producer, Druid Peak; Richard Scott Nelson, director, “Riviere des Chutes” Moderated by: Zak Boone, Associate Director, Deschutes Land Trust * Please note all participants are subject to change!

Joining us for this panel: Tony Kaye, director, Detachment; Ben Kasulke, cinematographer, 2014 Juror; Andrew Smith, director, Winter in the Blood; Mark Gustafson, animator, 2014 Juror; Mel Eslyn, producer and 2014 Juror. Moderated by: Erik Henriksen, editor, Portland Mercury

LITTLE HOPE WAS ARSON

Dr. Rebecca Gomperts sails a ship around the world, providing abortions at sea for women with no legal alternative. Her idea begins as a flawed spectacle, faced with governmental, religious and military blockade. But with each roadblock comes a more refined mission, until Rebecca realizes she can use new technologies to bypass laws and train women to give themselves abortions using WHO-researched protocols with pills creating an underground network of emboldened, informed activists who trust women to handle abortions themselves. Vessel is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who hears and answers a calling, and transforms a wildly improbable idea into a global movement.

SPECIAL THANKS: This festival would not be possible without all of the incredible people who come together to make BendFilm a reality every year! And this list does not nearly include all that make it possible. Thank you to our Board of Directors & Advisory Committee for all your support and for the countless hours you volunteer! To Kirsten Hostetler – we’ll always miss you – who did an absolutely incredible job professionalizing this organization. We wish her the absolute best in what will be a long and successful career. Without Kirsten, this fest would not be here now – only 5 months after our new staff started. To Paul, René & the entire amazingly creative team at tbd. Our PR team, Amy Beck & Linda Quon, thank you for picking up the one piece I had absolutely no time for. Your work is so important! To Matt & his crew at Hand in Hand Productions for your technical expertise, your integrity and your commitment to getting the job done under tough circumstances. To Aaron, Ban, Phil, Kayja, Katie & the entire staff at the Source for your support and for putting together this fantastic guide. To the Smart Solutions team who build and maintain our website. A huge thank you to Eujin, for creating our brand - the BendFilm logo - & designing incredible material to get our stuff out there! To all of our screeners who put in many hours and ensure that you only see the best films we bring in. To Lisa Koch, for your knowledge, experience, and hard work in getting volunteers here. To Denise & Tracy for your countless hours wrangling filmmakers and coordinating our home stays. For our home stay hosts, you help us treat filmmakers like Kings and Queens. Mark Lindow, for picking up Future Filmmakers – with your help, we’ll take it to the next level. Pamela Hulse Andrews, for starting and tirelessly working to keep INDE Women for Independent Film a success each year! Ben Perle for his amazing initiative of Businesses for BendFilm. Our party coordinators: Kaari Vaughn and Juli Hamdan. To the BASH Committee for the countless hours you put in and to make the event an even better success each year. To Monica Desmond – Todd’s wife – who kept the ship afloat while he worked away. And the biggest thank you to Katie Merritt who had the genius idea to start a film festival in the best place a film fest could possibly be hosted! And a HUGE thank you to Brooks Resources, The Starview Foundation, and all of our loyal sponsors without whom we could never started, let alone have gotten this far!! Last, but certainly not least, to the entire community of Central Oregon for attending and making BendFilm a success. Enjoy the show!

We would like to thank the indomitable, Ben Perle for his tireless work on behalf of BendFilm. Ben contacted over 100 businesses to donate $100 toward BendFilm.
