TENSION HEADACHES Studies show that over 90 percent of people will experience a headache of some form in their life, most commonly tension headaches. While the underlying cause is still being researched, tension headaches present as non-pulsating, band-like pressure in the neck and head on both sides. Symptoms normally last 30 minutes to seven days with mild to moderate intensity. Tension headaches are not aggravated by activity but can cause light or sound sensitivity. This headache is not associated with vomiting or nausea. Have a tension headache? Three things to try:

BREATHE Lightly close your mouth and relax your neck and shoulders. With your hands over your belly, slowly inhale through your nose for five seconds and exhale for five seconds. Counting can keep your mind from drifting. Try this for five minutes.

SLEEP Take a 20-minute nap. At night, get into a ritual so your sleep becomes a pattern. Avoid using tech devices and try meditation to wind down.

POSTURE Keep your head over your shoulders. Slouching and looking down with your head stresses your neck’s muscles.

When to get help: If you are experiencing multiple tension headaches a week, it’s advisable to seek out help from a clinician. There are many different modalities that can help provide relief from tension headaches including: massage, physical therapy, nutrition and acupuncture. One often overlooked area to have evaluated is the top of your neck. The top three segments in your spine feed directly into the pain center for the head, neck and throat; and may be a root contributor to your headaches. Dr. Kevin Hallmeyer DC, is a practitioner of the NUCCA technique which focuses on the structural correction of head and neck alignment. Learn more at truespinebend.com.

ABUNDANCE, Calling Our Name by Rev. Jane Hiatt

A

bundance is a beautiful word, a dancing light show of opportunities, a call and response of desire, a flowing river of generosity and gratitude. This is true for everyone. Nobody gets left out, theoretically. The catch is some of us don’t realize who we are, so alignment isn’t easy. Many of us look at our material circumstances and define ourselves from it. If we happen to have oodles of money, we may label ourselves rich, but still be ruled by fear of losing our money, missing out on the benefit of abundance: peace. Others are not rolling in the green stuff, they may focus on its absence, how to get it, marinating in fears, regret for missed opportunities, and missing out on peace too. The secret to abundance is that it originates in another dimension. The third dimension is where we are staring at our bills and counting coins. We can experience abundance in this dimension but we can’t create it from here. Lack exists in third dimension. If we slip into the fourth dimension, or higher, now true abundance can begin! I’ve been hearing people talk about higher dimensions for a very long time but it always sounded woo-woo to me, like floating around sipping tea with aliens, sort of “Men in Black” meets “Downton Abbey”. I figured other dimensions existed, but I didn’t understand how to access them or why I would want to.

Now I know higher dimensions are activated when we focus on spirituality, not religion, although that can be a doorway to the spiritual. Spirituality is an energetic relationship to the infinite, generative Force that is outside of time and space. We access this relationship through expressing qualities like reverence, generosity, gratitude and love. Alignment with our truest self begins by acknowledging that self as an expression of the infinite, generative Force. When we recognize this origin and essence, we know we come plumbed with all the qualities people refer to as Divine— wisdom, life, love, wholeness, creativity and abundance. We practice expressing these qualities and trust that if we turn on the faucet, the water will flow. Because we live in the third dimension, the temptation is always present to define ourselves by our current conditions. That’s why higher dimensional practice is so important to keep the stream of abundance flowing in our lives. We practice by giving and saying thanks. We practice by questioning old beliefs and having faith in something greater. We practice by meditating on the truth of our being. We practice by stretching outside our familiar containers. We practice by forgiving. We practice by hanging out with others who are practicing, studying timeless spiritual laws, and sharing what we discover. We practice by calling ourselves by our true name: a localized expression of the infinite, generative Force of abundance, wisdom, life, wholeness and love. Rev. Jane Hiatt is the senior minister at Unity Community of Central Oregon, a spiritual community committed to embodying love and awakening spiritual consciousness. She teaches regular classes in Abundance as well as other subjects. Rev. Jane is the author of Magic Child, all about love and power from the inside out; and Love Letters from the Mother. She has written many articles over the last 25 years for local publications. The next Abundance Class at Unity will begin on October 14th

Mastering Abundance Book by Toni G. Boehm Experience a life filled with abundance and luminosity, where you release struggle and as you ask, you receive. It may sound too simple, but for those who know these principles of abundance, it is true. For those who have shifted from 3rd dimensional, limited thinking regarding money into a 4th and 5th dimensional higher awareness of limitless source, anything is possible. There are even quantum science techniques found in this book to support you in your creation of unlimited abundance. You can master the key elements of abundance: Be, Allow, Align, & Attract.

Bend Baby Boom It seems like everyone is moving to Bend these days & even babies are choosing to live in Bend! Have you noticed Bend is experiencing a baby boom, especially in our Yoga Studios?

I

’ve been practicing yoga daily for about 10 years and teaching for almost 4 years. When I found out I was pregnant last fall, nothing changed. Well, except for my growing belly and prenatal modifications. I didn’t let getting pregnant stop me from doing the things I loved. I don’t want to say it made my pregnancy easy, because pregnancy was not easy by any means, but it sure did make it more manageable. Through my yoga practice I was able to stay active and fit until 39 weeks and 2 days, and my beautiful baby girl was born 2 days later on her own, with no medications. I had a quick first time labor totaling about 6-7 hours

which took the doctor’s by surprise. I used my breathing techniques and meditation practice to help me stay relaxed…well as relaxed as you can be in the most painful experience of your life. I thoroughly enjoyed being pregnant, but being a mom brings the most joy to my life. My daughter teaches me patience and unconditional love on a daily basis and I couldn’t be more grateful. by Leanne Schweitzer Yoga Mom Leanne teaches Yoga at Groove Yoga, Fridays 12-1

Over the Moon

Diaper Service

More reasons to use cloth:

• Cloth Diapers are the most environmentally

friendly diapering option available. Cloth diapering saves thousands of pounds of non-biodegradable waste from entering landfills where they would sit for over 500 years.

Cotton diapers allow your baby's skin to breathe with layers of soft, absorbent cotton leading to fewer diaper rashes.

Diaper Covers come in an array of colorful patterns and prints that are sure to melt your heart.

Andrea Rhoan of Over the Moon Diaper Service

How it Works 1. Over The Moon Diaper Service will deliver prefolds to your door in a cloth pail liner. 2.

Wrap the soft cloth diaper around your baby and snap the cover to keep the diaper in place. When changing, just put the dirty diaper in the bag. No rinsing, soaking or hassle.

3. Soiled diapers in bag will be picked up on Tuesdays and they will be replaced with clean, fresh diapers

in a clean bag.

Over The Moon Diaper Services mission is to reduce waste going to landfills, decrease the amount of water and energy put into the disposable diaper industry, and provide a convenient service to all of Central Oregon. We want to make it easy for you to choose cloth diapering for your family.

• Cotton diapers and covers will last years and

multiple children. They can be reused 50 to 200 times before being turned into rags.

Cotton diapers don’t contain chemicals. Disposable diapers contain traces of toxins. Having those chemicals touching your baby’s skin 24/7 is not a comforting thought.

• Cloth diapers contain the mess better. Some

mothers who use cloth diapers insist that the infamous disposable diaper “blowout” doesn’t happen as often.

Boost your Winter Wellness by Dr. Marie Agnew

1.

Adopt a Regular Sleep/Wake Cycle

Boost your health with adequate sleep. Go to bed earlier and allow yourself to sleep longer, 8-9 hours per night. Adopt the same sleep/wake cycle, turn in and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Keep heat down when it’s time to sleep, a cooler sleep environment (60-66 degrees) and black-out curtains are shown to increase sleep quality. Avoid screen time or consider blue light blocking glasses if you’re going to binge Netflix or scroll emails prior to bed. Blue light activates our sympathetic, fight or flight nervous system.

2.

Nutrient Supplements

3.

Make sure you are Connected

4.

Practice ABHYANGA (lymph stimulating self massage)

5.

Find a Physical Activity you ENJOY!

Supplements improve health, immunity, and energy levels: • Vitamin D plays a powerful immune regulatory role, it regulates expression of hundreds of genes involved in biological functions and activates our immune defenses. • Omega 3 Fatty Acids In the form of extra virgin cod liver oil, flax oil or fish oil capsules; reduce inflammation, boost immunity, help with dry skin and achy joints. For vegans, ALA is an option. • Fermented Foods 70-80% of our immune system is in our gut, if you have poor gut flora, you’ll be more susceptible to viruses and infections. Eating a diet rich in fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, or yogurt will strengthen your microbiome. • Vitamin C contributes substantially to immune defense by supporting multiple cellular functions of the immune system.

Connection to self and community can improve health. Yin Yoga, Meditation, Prayer, Hiking, Tai Chi, & Diaphragmatic Breathing are great ways to get into your body, become grounded and decrease stress levels. Prolonged stress can lead to increased cortisol, affecting inflammatory and immune response, making it more likely to get sick when exposed to a virus. Take time for self care! In Ayurveda, your hands are a healing tool, practice self massage to improve sleep and stimulate your lymph, an integral part of the immune system. Start with dry hands or a dry brush, rub your hands or the brush over your body to stimulate lymph and blood flow. If you want to use moisture, use warm sesame oil on your skin, massage into your skin using long strokes over long bones and round strokes at joints. Massage your abdomen in a clockwise rotation.

Move your body to help flush toxins, boost immunity and promote lymphatic flow. There are so many exercise options. Keep experimenting until you find an activity that brings you joy. Get your blood pumping and heart rate up, exercise has a profound effect on your immune system, improves concentration and releases endorphins Kaizen shows small incremental changes will add up over time, implement one change per week for several months, as opposed to multiple practices at one time . Herbal Allies for the Season by

Holly Hutton of Herbal Goddess Medicinals

As we transition from Summer into Autumn, we move into Metal season according to the Five Elements system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Metal is about letting go, detaching, moving from external to internal, it corresponds to lungs and respiratory system. Lungs control circulation of our Wei-Qi, which is the defensive Qi that protects us from an invasion of flu and colds. Three native plants to treat colds, flu, coughs and fevers are:

A

rrowleaf

Balsamroot

(Balsamorhiza sagittate) dots hillsides around Central Oregon resembling a sunflower, used in Native American traditions. Herbalist Michael Moore describes Balsamroot as a cross between echinacea and osha to fight infections, this root is used in cough syrups, due its resins, which expel phlegm. Out of respect for this amazing plant, I harvest one section of root leaving other sections in place. Its outer root bark is cleaned and stripped from inner bark, exuding a sticky sap similar to pine. Roots are best gathered in early spring before it blooms or in fall after leaves die

back.

M

ullein (Verbascum thapsus) considered as an invasive species, has been used in treating respiratory conditions, both leaves and root are used as a tea for asthma, pneumonia and spasmodic or dry coughs. An infused oil of mullein flowers is a remedy for ear infection. To prepare this oil, first find an abundance of flowering mullein, fill a small mason jar with flowers and let them wilt, to reduce their moisture content. Fill the jar to the brim with oil. Set jar, tightly capped, in the sun for a month or two, then strain the oil into clean bottles. 5-10 drops in the ear for an infection.

Y

arrow (Achillea millefolium) is

used for treating colds, flu and fevers. Yarrow has a diaphoretic action, opening pores of the skin and encourages sweating, effective in breaking fevers. Yarrow is bitter, so making a tincture is a good option. Harvest when flowering, allow to wilt, pack into a mason jar and cover with vodka. Let sit for a few weeks, then take a teaspoon several times a day during an acute phase of fever. Yarrow is also a hemostatic and considered a wilderness first aid medicine. Just chew the leaves and apply to cuts and scrapes to stop bleeding.

Bend Soap Company - step up your moisture routine Bend is a dry climate with cold winter temperatures plus biting winds, your skin may even dry and crack. Be ready for elements year-round by stepping up your moisture routine. Step 1: Wash. We wash our skin to remove dirt, oil, and other impurities, but if you aren’t using an all-natural soap, you may be replacing dirt with toxins. Moisturize with goat milk soap, it adds essential fatty acids that soften your skin. It has natural antibacterial properties to fight acne and create a moisture barrier to protect your skin from harsh elements. Step 2: Exfoliate. Exfoliating skin scrubs away dead skin cell buildup to reveal fresher, younger-looking skin. Goat milk soap has alpha hydroxy acids, which gently remove dead skin cells. You can also use a loofah or a sugar scrub. Step 3: Moisturize. After washing, pat your skin dry and seal in moisture by applying a goat milk lotion to lock in moisture. Change dry, itchy skin to soft, moisturized, healthy skin year round. Using fewer products saves money and time, lessening your impact on the environment. Opt for quality over quantity with products you choose. Your skin will thank you! Bend Soap Company goat milk soaps, lotions and all-natural skincare products at bendsoap.com.

Joyful Gift Giving

T

he exchange of presents during the holidays is meant to convey our love, and enrich our connection with others. As modern life appears to speed up, it’s often challenging to find gifts in a slow, thoughtful manner. To have a more easeful and intentional holiday season, it is essential to take pause and design a gift - giving tradition that reflects your values. Begin by envisioning your ideal holiday celebration. What does it look, sound and feel like? How will you choose to give gifts that spark joy for the receiver and that also align with your principles? Consider your aspirations for expressing and sharing holiday joy in a meaningful way. Gifts of self-service are so appreciated when they come from the heart. Experiential gifts are an easy way to select tailored presents for friends and family. Gift certificates for breathwork, yoga class passes, spa services such as massage and facials, cooking classes or sound therapy are fabulous wellness experiences. Bonus: these offerings don’t require wrapping, which saves time, money and prevents waste. Self-service and experiential gifts create memories, relieve stress and don't take up space in the home. Prefer to have a physical gift to share? Consider buying consumable products from local artisans such as specialty tea blends, natural bath products or unique treats. Customize your gifts based on the recipients preferences and tastes. Be unconventional and use shoe or chocolate boxes decorated with holiday images from magazines for a one of a kind look. Instead of buying wrapping paper and bows, try presenting your gift in a reusable shopping tote or other items that can be of value. The possibilities of original gift ideas and how they are exchanged are endless! However you decide to celebrate, I hope you rejoice in the presence of others and make it a memorable one. Low Intensity Laser Therapy

Everyday Brain Fitness offers Bioflex Laser to treat chronic pain, reduce inflammation, musculoskeletal injuries, heal wounds and improve brain function. Laser therapy uses monochromatic light emission from a low intensity laser diode (1,000-2,000 milliwatts). A light source is placed in contact with the skin, allowing photon energy to penetrate tissue, where it interacts with intracellular biomolecules resulting in restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body’s healing process.

Positive Effects of Laser Therapy: • Immune response is stimulated. • Improved Lymphatic drainage. • Production of growth hormone is increased. • Relief of symptoms as the healing process is supported. • Production and release of beta-endorphins, morphine like substances produced by cells in the body that inhibit the sensation of pain. • ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production is increased resulting in improved cellular metabolism. • DNA (desoxyribosenucleicacid) production, the protein building block of tissue is increased. • Neurotransmission facilitated due to elevated levels of serotonin and aceytylecholine. HEMPWORX CBD by Heather Soderlund

I was skeptical after using an expensive cannabidiol (CBD) oil from my local pharmacy for chronic hip issues that sadly didn’t work. I trusted this brand because it was sold from a trusted retailer - but buyer beware - not all CBD products are made the same. I used this brand claiming to be the number one CBD product for nine months, but I was still headed towards a hip replacement at 46 years old. Then a friend gave me pure CBD for my husband’s back pain. We couldn’t believe the relief we were experiencing. Within three days of taking this oil twice a day under my tongue I could walk normally, my limping was gone and my husband’s back was better! I went into research mode about this pure CBD oil. Customer testimonies to how the company processes their oil from seed to sale was so impressive that I became a CBD Distributor to help others. Staying within guidelines set by the FDA, CBD companies cannot make medical claims regarding serious diseases. There are many scientific studies being conducted regarding CBD with promising results. There’s an explosion of products made with CBD, including a lot of imitation CBD products.

What to look for when finding the right cannabidiol product for your personal needs:

Co2 extraction is the best method for a solvent free, pure oil.

• Third party lab testing and product certification

should be easily viewable from the company’s website.

• Gas Chromatography tests • Certification of analysis • Potency tests • Antimicrobial tests • US Hemp Certified with the US Hemp Roundtable. There are only thirteen approved CBD companies with this purity stamp. Free of GMO’s, free of fillers, molds, heavy metals, and other harmful ingredients. If you are interested in learning more, feel free to contact Heather Soderlund at (707) 365-9295. I am a local Bend CBD Distributor.

The $20 art show is Bend’s biggest “little“ art show. Bright Place Gallery October 19th, 6:00pm 909 SE Armour Rd, Bend, OR 97702

Bright Place Gallery is proud to present the 7th Annual 20-Dollar Art Show. Each year Bright Place gathers artists from Bend and beyond to participate in this grand exhibit of tiny art. This is how it works: we begin soliciting art in the summertime for this fall show. Unlike other art shows, there is no jury process. Participants are asked to follow a few simple rules and submit their pieces by the deadline (Oct 12th this year,) then invite everyone they know to the show. On the night of the opening we will typically sell over 50 percent of the work we hang. And in the following few weeks we’ll sell another couple hundred pieces. The buyers will be overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the work. While we get many well-known Bend artists submitting beautiful work, we are always excited to see what amazing lesser-known artists surface to participate in the show. The show attracts a huge audience of regular art-buyers and art-curious “gem-seekers” to peruse this huge collection. Last year we hung about 900 pieces from about 60 artists. This year, with still over 2 months to the submission deadline, we already have over 30 artists confirmed. We’re expecting to hang over 1200 pieces, and at this rate, numbers could go much higher. But quantity is not the main factor here. The show seems to magically pull some amazing talent from out of the woodwork, resulting in a show where for a mere 20 dollars each, buyers can take home some truly delightful work. The show opens October 19th at 6pm, but we encourage buyers to get in line early! Last year, on average, we sold a piece of art every 17 seconds

Bobbye Rotello

personal trainer for Optimal Health Bobbye began her Health education 27 years ago, when she was a busy, working mom and developed chemical sensitivities that severely impacted her health. Traditional Doctors could not find out what was wrong with her and her children. She met with Dean Ornish, Deepak Chopra, John Robbins and many, alternative practitioners. She went from seminar to seminar studying new ways to heal the body, finally discovering that colon cleansing is the first line of defense against ill health. Hydrotherapy improves health because this level of cleansing allows the body to eliminate harmful toxins, that can lead to serious health problems. Every tissue in the body is fed by the blood stream, which is supplied by the bowel. Colon hydrotherapy restores bowel tone and improves nutrient absorption, which allows radiant health to emerge from the inside out. Your immune system functions better in a clean, vibrant body. Bobbye’s education and life focus helps people make positive changes in their health through detoxification and nutrition. As this testimonial shows, “As well as being a talented colon hydrotherapist, Bobbye Rotello shares her understanding of nutrition, body, mind, and spirit with her clients.” Schedule your Hydrotherapy session here: colonhydrotherapybendoregon.com

Everlong Healing:

Healing the Whole Self by Amber Barney

M

y journey has shown me the way to overcome obstacles is to find trust and love within ourselves. When we cannot fully trust our bodies or our minds, we cannot fully love ourselves; and we cannot find the healing we are seeking. Many of us have baggage - some old stories - and we have to accept all the parts of ourselves we may not like. As a massage therapist, I’ve seen the effects healing can have on both our mental state and physical body. Finding balance with the mind-body connection will heal the whole self and relationships with our loved ones as well. I’ve found clients hold onto trauma and stress on a deep, physical level, showing up as chronic pain, sleep disturbances, headaches, acute injuries, and muscle tension. Receiving massage therapy and energy work, clients are able to allow themselves to be vulnerable, to let their body and mind relax to accept healing. They take an inventory of thoughts, feelings, physical body, daily habits, and nutrition to evaluate where change needs to occur in order to feel healthier. My goal at Everlong Healing is to facilitate a safe, therapeutic environment for people to feel relaxed, to get to know themselves on a deeper, more connected level. Healing the whole self is a lifelong journey with conscious daily practice in order to feel at ease within our minds and bodies.

Salt Bath Bliss by Andrea Furber Step in. Sink down. Release. Let all of the weariness of your day go into the warm saltwater. You’ve had a tough day, you have a little chill, you might be coming down with something. A simple remedy is a salt bath. Draw a bathtub full of warm to hot water, add 2 to 3 pounds of salt to the water while the tub is filling. Yes, pounds! A 25-pound bag of Salt costs about $5 at restaurant supply stores. Epsom Salt baths are therapeutically different, this is a regular salt bath. Add some lavender, eucalyptus or tea tree oil plus any other bath oils or bubbles. Soak for about 20 minutes but not more than 30 minutes. Rinse off in the shower with fresh water. Salt baths are best in the evening before bed. it releases stress from your body and from the energy field around the body. Water holds energy, salt breaks it down. Salt contains negative ions, that’s why it feels so good to walk on the beach. As stress disintegrates, the physical body is able to relax and all systems are able to function at a higher level allowing the body to heal itself. Before a virus appears in the physical body, it first shows up as a dark or grey area in the energy field. By taking a salt bath, you’re clearing it from your energy field before it has a chance to manifest fully in your physical body.

T

he most important journey an individual can take, is the journey within. Uncovering all that’s being revealed to you this lifetime beckons you to remember who you really are. If you are feeling lost or disempowered, it can be easy to lose sight of purpose and passion. Being rooted deeply within, life can flow through us, allowing us to see more of our unlimited potential. If we learn to listen to ourselves intuitively, life becomes clearer and effortless. As a Life Coach, Spiritual Counselor and Psychic, my goal is to guide others towards living an empowered sacred life. My passion is to assist others in finding a way to weave a sacred journey into their everyday life. Reminding them of their sacred purpose can bring greater clarity to allow them to find their soul’s passion. For some, its baby steps and others, large leaps. Every individual path is unique and special, it is my joy to work with each individual where they are on their path. The Vagus Nerve in Trauma Recovery by Dr. Arielle Schwartz

Many distressing symptoms of post-traumatic stress are felt in the body - a tightness in the chest, a sinking feeling in the stomach, a familiar knot in the throat, or as a chronic feeling of exhaustion. We now recognize that we must turn toward the body as part of the healing process and as a result we have seen a surge in the use of mind body therapies such as: Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, Feldenkrais, Breathwork, Massage, Craniosacral, Nutritional Counseling, Acupuncture and Mindfulness for treatment of

ind-body therapies work with the vagus nerve to help you find balance. Through a process of self-study and mindful body awareness, you can start to learn strategies that help you restore a sense of safety and heal from trauma. Mind-body therapies are effective because they engage physiological changes in the autonomic nervous system as measured by changes in the functioning of the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve extends from the brainstem down into the muscles of the face, inner ear, throat, heart, lungs, stomach, and intestines. Mind-body therapies create changes in how we orient to our environment by inviting a soft gaze and invite us to explore new patterns of breath or movement that directly interact with these areas of the body.

post-traumatic stress. Mind-body therapies help us be less vulnerable to stress, less reactive, and less impulsive. We increase our awareness of the choices we have to help us feel grounded and calm. We feel more in control. One way mind-body therapies work is by stimulating the Vagus Nerve. Knowledge about how this nerve works provides a fundamental understanding of traumatic stress and facilitates our ability to heal.

Mind-body therapies are associated with changes in health and wellbeing including: • Reduced opiate and psychotropic use Practices to Reset the Vagus Nerve • Enhanced emotional well-being • Better social relationships • Reduced autonomic sympathetic activation • Reduced blood pressure • Improved neuro-endocrine activity • Improved thyroid health • Improved blood sugar management • Improved digestive system health • Reduced Inflammation & rheumatoid arthritis • Decreased reported symptoms of PTSD • Improved vagal tone (as measured by increased heart rate variability (HRV)

Practices to Reset the Vagus Nerve Attend to your Gut Health Increase the health of your vagus nerve by maintaining a healthy digestive system. The enteric nervous system, also called belly brain, is made up of the “microbiome” that lives in your gut. This ecosystem contains good and bad bacteria that reside within your intestinal tracts. An imbalance in your gut can lead to an inflammatory response in your immune system and cause a wide range of disruptive symptoms, including anxiety and depression. Improve your microbiome by reducing sugar intake and identifying any hidden food intolerances. You may need the assistance of a doctor or nutritionist to discover causes of gut imbalance.

Breathwork Conscious Breathing: Breath is one of the fastest ways to shift our nervous system states. Vagus nerve stimulation occurs when the breath is slowed from our typical 10-14 breaths per minute to 5-7 breaths per minute. You can achieve this by counting the inhalation to 5, hold briefly, and exhale to a count of 10. Further stimulate vagus nerve by creating a slight constriction at the back of the throat and creating an “hhh”. Breathe like you are trying to fog a mirror to create the feeling in the throat but inhale and exhale out of the nose sound (in yoga, called Ujjayi pranayama). Laugh Out Loud Laughter is the best medicine. It creates a natural high of endorphins throughout your body. A good belly laugh naturally changes how you breathe, your heart rate, and your blood pressure.

Shake it Out Inspired by animals in the wild, you can use a simple shaking practice to let go of physical tension or come out of a freeze response. First, scan your body with your awareness to notice areas of tension. Then, focus on these spots and one at a time give yourself permission to shake them out. Allow yourself to surrender to the shaking and if possible let yourself release any sounds to accompany the movement. When you feel complete, take a moment to pause in the stillness and notice the subsequent release. Honeybee Breath Vagus nerve passes by vocal chords and inner ear. Therefore, humming and singing both can have a calming effect on your nervous system. In yoga, Bhamari pranayama, or Honeybee breath provides an opportunity to experiment with a humming sound. In this practice, I invite you to sit in a comfortable position and close your ears with your palms (thumbs facing down). On the exhale create a humming sound to vibrate your eardrum. Repeat as long as desired. Rinse and Repeat Vagus nerve is constantly moving us in and out of balance as we are adapting to the changing demands of our world. Therefore, we need to repeat vagus nerve balancing exercises. This is why many mind-body therapies are used as a daily practice.

9 STAR KI FOR 2020

See what 2020 looks like for you (year starts February 4th) by Terie Sandusky Nine Star Ki is a Chinese Astrology based on a Five Elements system used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Bagua of Feng Shui. This is a nature based tradition, where we are born into certain elements and each year we travel through other elements within this 5 elements star. Your home also has a 9 Star Ki that will directly affect your health, wealth and love life. To learn more about 9 Star Ki contact kimimihealingarts.com

1940•1949•1958•1967•1976•1985•1994•2003

Starting all over again! This is your first year in a brand new 9 year cycle, you are like a seed, underground, full of potential. This will not be a doing year but more of an imagining year. Give yourself time to dream your future into being. You are germinating this year, the most important part of the growth cycle, take time for yourself to envision what it is you want to create. If people say you are being lazy, tell them you are germinating.

This year you will accomplish a lot but your results can be less predictable than last year. Perhaps you have started a business but now you’re unsure of the direction you want to take. In nature, this year would be symbolized by a tree bending in the wind. Be flexible, make adjustments, allow for changes to take you in new directions. This would be a good year to expand your horizons with continuing education or a retreat.

You are on fire this year! This is your time to shine & you may receive more attention than usual. You will feel outgoing, so have fun with it, go to the parties and dance to your own beat. You may find yourself so busy with too many projects and events, that your head is swirling, so take time to meditate. If you are single, you will probably meet “the one” this year, as you are tapped in, turned on and ready for love.

3 Wood Tree Star/ Warrior

4 Bamboo Star/ Wind

You are beginning to unfurl, like a fern in the forest, this begins an important growth cycle. Take time to set goals, intentions, make action plans, but don’t actually take action until next year, when the energy supports moving forward. This is your year to get ready to be ready! Be patient. In 2021 you will spring into action knowing what you want and how to get it because you planned it all out this year.

6 Metal Star/ Father

7 Metal Star/ Artist

This can be an exciting year & a stressful one. The winds of change that were blowing last year are now a full force hurricane, bringing opportunities and chaos at the same time. Ride out the storm by not making any big changes. This is not the time to move or quit your job, though you may want to. Stay put, find your center, work hard and ride out this storm knowing that next year everything you want is coming your way.

1944•1953•1962•1971•1980•1989•1998•2007 2 Earth Star / Mother

5 Earth Star/Center

Full steam ahead this year, the wind is in your sails. If you have been wanting to accomplish something big, this is your time to make it happen! This would be an excellent year to start a new business, make a move or get that promotion you deserve. You have more energy than usual but try not to overdo it. You will need more physical activity, walking, running, biking and nature therapy to ground yourself.

1938•1947•1956•1965•1974•1983•1992•2001 8 Mountain Star/ Earth

1937•1946•1955•1964•1973•1982•1991•2000 9 Fire Star/ Lover

You have worked hard and prospered, now is your time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Take a moment in gratitude, enjoy the brilliance of a setting sun and eat nourishing foods. You may be more sensitive to your surroundings making this an ideal time to tidy up your home. You’re also more sensitive to negative energy, this is a good time to receive an energy clearing. This is the perfect year for travel, to take in scenic beauty and paint or take photos.

1945•1954•1963•1972•1981•1990•1999•2008 1 Water Star/ Innovator

This year is about inner transformations, like a butterfly in a cocoon, you will need more time to yourself, to go within and figure things out. Accept this year as a time of hibernation as you prepare for big things ahead next year. Allow time for solitude, naps, self care, journaling and Yin Yoga. Your home will be a place of refuge, so this is a good time to organize your home but not a good time to move.

This is your harvest year, you will reap rewards! Your mantra is “Let things come to you” and they will. This is your luckiest year, you may receive unexpected money from an inheritance, a promotion at work or the lottery. You will be in your power all year, more able to manifest all that you desire, but the tricky part may be knowing what it is that you really want in life. Try making a wish list at the beginning of the year, see if your wishes do come true.
