SEE YOU ON THE SAND “Your outer journey may contain a million steps; your inner journey only has one: the step you are taking right now.” ~Eckhart TolleDenny Dyke created Circles in the Sand in 2011 by happenstance as he was drawn to Bandon Beach for its profound natural beauty and he began drawing spirals in the sand. As he created these paths, people showed up to follow them, now over 22,000 followers have walked his spirals. After hundreds of sand paths, he developed his own Dreamfield Labyrinth design meandering through 7 spirals and back to the beginning. Don’t call his work A-mazing because a maze causes anxiety as you try to find your way out, think of the Corn Maze at Smith Rock. He designs a sand Labyrinth with a single path, asking you to

find your way in. It is a walking meditation into the center to find resolution, calmness and affirmation then bring it back out into your life as you peacefully flow back out, retracing your steps of where you once were, much more relaxing than any maze. Denny Dyke calls himself an accidental artist. Like most true artists I know, he is still figuring out how to make a living at his passion, so donate! He does create commissioned paths as a Spiritual Ceremony for Marriage Proposals, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, Reunions and Memorials, a simple yet powerful dedication on the beautiful beach. Each path is uniquely created with complete intention and awareness. He dedicates his labyrinths to promote healing as a mindfulness exercise that creates transformation for the walkers. He found his own healing spending hours on his fresh beach canvas being in tune with nature and soaking up negative ions.

Most labyrinths are about a mile long, so his art is exercise. He has groomers who volunteer because his enthusiasm is contagious! He doesn’t plan it out, he creates his paths in the moment, letting it flow into being, the energy of the sacred land guides him as he creates this sacred earth art. Then the ocean takes it all away like a sand mandala disappearing in the wind. “As the tide comes in, I envision dolphins and whales tracking the labyrinth, too,” he muses. His labyrinths are always one path, no dead ends, no wrong turns and you always return home. The path is a liminal space journey, a threshold between what you were when you began walking this sand spiral and what you are becoming in each step you take. It becomes an in between place of transition, not knowing where you’re going and yet it encourages you to be here now. You just have to experience it firsthand to feel the profound power of it! Juliana V. U.S. Lawsuit Plaintiff Tia Hatton grew up in Bend. She is now one of 21 plaintiffs in the lawsuit suing our Government to protect the Environment. Since the industrial revolution, use of fossil fuels has brought the human population tremendous progress and opportunity, but it has also created a perpetuating global problem. A cause for alarm: increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide from pre-industrial levels of 280 parts per million (ppm) to current levels at over 400 ppm. The process of humans burning carbon based fossil fuels to increase the greenhouse gas effect is a scientific phenomenon our government has known about for a long time. The story of climate change, or global warming, is surprisingly well documented within various agencies of the executive branch, not excluding the office of the president. For example, the 1965 President’s Science Advisory a Committee Report of the Quality of the Environment that concludes: By the year 2000 an increase in atmospheric CO2...may be significant to produce measurable and perhaps marked changes in climate and will almost certainly cause significant changes in the temperature and other properties of the stratosphere. In 1988, NASA’s top climate scientist Dr. James Hansen testified in front of congress saying green-

house gas effect had arrived, along with predictions of outcomes we are beginning to see today, such as rising sea levels and increased droughts. Thirty years later the federal government has not heeded any advice of these warnings, they continue to affirmatively promote a national energy system dependent on fossil fuels by giving tax breaks to the industry, subsidizing fossil fuels, and promoting exploration and development of fossil fuels on public lands. The federal government failed to ratify the Kyoto protocol and has pulled out of the Paris Climate agreement. Effects of human caused climate change include rising sea levels, increased droughts, increased wildfires, increased risk of diseases related to warmer and wetter weather, the mass movement of climate refugees, food insecurity, psychological harm, and damage to unadaptable ecosystems. The youngest generations will inherit this enormous, emerging burden. In August 2015, twenty young people and myself decided to take meaningful action to help stop this and get to the root of the problem: we sued the U.S. federal government. The defendants included President Obama, and heads of agencies such as the Departments of Energy, Department of Transportation, Department of Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection agency. Now, the lawsuit is against President Trump and his executive branch. With the help of our lawyers from Eugene, and the

nonprofit Our Children’s Trust, we argue the government’s affirmative actions, along with the long standing knowledge of the harms of fossil fuels, violates our constitutional right to life, liberty, and property, and fails to protect essential public trust resources. We are asking for the courts to order the government to prepare a science based climate recovery plan that reduces atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to 350 ppm by the year 2100. In the same year we filed the lawsuit, I became curious and began to understand the science of climate change. As a competitive Nordic skier throughout high school, I enjoyed every practice and race. In 2015, my senior year, Central Oregon received little snow, causing cancellations and limited time spent at Meissner. It got me thinking about the future of the snow pack in the Cascades. I knew the term “climate change”, but until that point, I had not seen the link between rising carbon dioxide level and rise in temperatures. In Spring of 2015, I went to a meeting with other local high school students to hear about how we could take action. Our Children’s Trust presented the story of youth in Eugene who successfully got their city council to pass a climate ordinance to curb carbon emissions according to scientific standards. Through this connection, Kelsey Juliana, who is now my co-plaintiff, emailed me asking if I was interested in joining the landmark lawsuit against the federal government. My an-

The fossil fuel industry joined as intervenors, unsuccessfully tried to dismiss the case, and then left the case. Most recently, the U.S. government filed a rare writ of mandamus, bringing the case out of the Federal Court in Eugene, to the Ninth District Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Three judges unanimously denied the attempt, and sent it back for trial to continue. I’ll admit our success has been surprising to many and the lawsuit is unconventional. However, our lawsuit has the characteristics of a suit similar in magnitude to Brown V. Board of Education or Obergefell V. Hodges. In her decision to deny a motion to dismiss, U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken wrote “I have no doubt that the right to a stable climate system capable of sustaining human life is fundamental to a free and ordered society.” The trial date is expected to be set shortly, we are hoping for fall 2018. I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to attend the start of trial in Eugene, OR. BLUEBERRY SKILLET SCONES WITH LEMON GLAZE Fresh, warm, homemade pastries at camp? Yes, please! Crisp and dry on the outside, soft and dense center, they are delicious with jam or butter served alongside coffee or tea. To make a savory version swap sugar, lemon zest, and blueberries for shredded Cheddar and chopped scallions. Makes 14 Scones.

4 Servings This camp staple is a classic, foolproof recipe for a fresh catch of the day. Kitchen twine holds the lemons and scallions together, but un-waxed, plain dental floss works in a pinch.

BACON WRAPPED TROUT STUFFED WITH HERBS

SCONES • • • • • • •

Whole trout, butterflied and bones removed Salt and ground black pepper Garlic powder 8 sprigs thyme 4 sprigs rosemary 2 large lemons, halved crosswise, sliced into thin half moons 8 scallions 16 to 20 strips bacon

Prepare a grill over medium heat. Season the trout inside and out with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stuff each trout with 2 sprigs thyme, 1 sprig rosemary, and a row of lemon slices. Layer one fourth of the remaining lemon slices and 2 scallions on top. Wrap the trout with bacon, starting at the tail and tucking the end of the bacon strip under itself before continuing with another strip. You’ll need 4-5 strips of bacon per fish. Tie a long length of kitchen twine around each trout to secure the fixings. Grill the trout until a knife easily pierces the thickest part of the flesh and the bacon is crisp, 15 to 20 minutes, turning frequently to avoid flare ups.

2 cups (240 g) Multipurpose Baking Mix (page 44) 3/4 cup (180 ml) buttermilk 1/4 cup (56 g) butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 large egg Zest of 1 large lemon 1 cup (170 g) blueberries

1/2 cup (57 g) powdered sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Make scones in a large bowl, stir together baking mix, buttermilk, butter, sugar, egg, and lemon zest until a soft, sticky, and shaggy dough forms. Gently fold in blueberries. Grease a large skillet with butter, heat to medium. Use a large spoon, drop ¼ cups of dough (slightly larger than a golf ball) into the skillet. Arrange so the sides of each scone barely touch. Cover and cook until scones are golden brown on the bottom, 4-5 minutes. Turn each one over with a spoon and cook, covered, 5 more minutes until both sides are lightly browned and fully cooked in the center. Glaze: whisk together powdered sugar and lemon juice in a small bowl until well blended. Drizzle over warm scones before serving.

2 large lemons, divided 1 1/2 cups chicken broth, divided 1 cup uncooked pearl couscous 1/2 teaspoon dried dill Olive oil spray 16 medium asparagus spears, trimmed and cut in half (about 1 pound/450 g) 4 (6-ounce/170 g) halibut fillets 1/4 cup (56 g) butter, cut into small pieces Kosher salt and ground black pepper

4 Servings Note: Pearl couscous is also known as Israeli couscous. Prepare grill over high heat. Slice 1 of the lemons into 8 rounds . In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of broth with couscous, juice from remaining 1 lemon, and the dill. Mist 4 sheets of aluminum foil with oil and bring all the sides up to form a bowl . Mound one-fourth of the couscous, including liquid, in the center of each bowl . Top each mound with 8 asparagus halves, 1 halibut fillet, a few pieces of butter, a hefty pinch of salt and pepper, and 2 lemon slices. Pour 1/4 of remaining broth into each bowl . Fold the foil tightly together on top to seal, leaving room inside each packet for heat and steam to circulate. Grill packets for about 15 minutes, until the halibut is cooked through and couscous and asparagus are tender.

4 Servings On a dish, arrange salad by alternating peaches, tomatoes, and mozzarella in rows. Tuck basil leaves between the fruit and cheese. Drizzle generously with oil and vinegar, aiming for a ratio of 2:1 oil to vinegar. Top salad with a sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste, mix it up. For sweeter flavor, grill peaches on medium heat, 2 minutes on each side until lightly charred and caramelized

Two generations ago, it was exotic to discover kiwis, coconuts, or mangos in a grocery store. Foods were grown in neighboring farms, eaten seasonally and locally. Technology and a global economy gave us the luxury of purchasing any food we like, any time of year! This modern convenience could harm your body and the environment. With our fast-paced lives, slowing down and eating what’s grown on local farms might be the best medicine your body can have access too.

“When we told our youth that farming was a lowly aim compared with becoming teachers, doctors, or lawyers, what were we thinking? We need teachers for just a few of life’s decades. If we are lucky, we’ll see a doctor only a few times a year, and a lawyer even less. But we need farmers every single day of our lives, beginning to end.” -Barbara Kingsolver from Animal, Vegetable, Miracle Before you feel hunger, a farmer sees a fragile forest of starts, each the size of the thread flaring from her tattered jeans. Each delicate tendril a testament to patience and care. Each hand sewn into hand sifted soil, placed in dark, warm, and humid conditions, first leaves prompt a great migration from darkness to light to propagation. Before you feel hunger, a farmer is planning. First seeds started in February, transplanted, then tended until harvest. There’s anxiety and eagerness as frozen dew, fifteen degree mornings and 40 mph winds rip holes in greenhouse plastic, waiting for water to flow from canals. Plant starts will inevitably freeze, flea beetles eat holes in arugula, and hailstones impale freshly planted greens. To be a farmer is to be an eternal optimist. A farmer must purchase seeds, amendments, infrastructure and fuel, then make an educated guess at how hungry you will be and how much to grow. If a farmer is lucky, you’ll tell her. If a farmer is fortunate, you will support her all year long with CSAs. There is disconnect between food, farmer, environment, and our wellbeing because food is always at our fingertips, so convenient we forget the means to an end. We see food as an ingredient in a recipe. If we look at the system behind food’s creation we reconnect links between the environment and farming. By eating locally, we interact with this system firsthand. We talk to farmers at local Farmer’s Markets. We observe the abundance of birds, insects and livestock at local farms. Four basic necessities in life are: water, food, shelter, and air. If these are unsafe, such as unclean water, smoky air or bad structures, we know it, but impacts of unhealthy foods may not trigger us immediately. To know our food is to know the

As a mental health counselor, I work with clients suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic fatigue, chronic pain and diagnosis of degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia, lupus, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis and more. One reason could be that we rarely connect with the earth with our bare feet in our modern world. We

Weeks before fava beans appear in gardens or farmers’ market, there’s a sure sign of spring: fava greens. Many people overlook the silvery-green foliage in favor of pods, but fava greens offer fresh fava flavor without the work of shelling pods. They’re light, tender, succulent and embody the earthiness of spring. To make the dressing, combine reserved orange juices and grapefruit juices with shallot, salt, pepper, and orange zest in a small bowl. Whisk in the oil until well blended. Place fava leaves in a large serving bowl and lightly toss with dressing. Divide fava leaves among four plates, arrange orange and grapefruit segments around the leaves. Restoring the Deschutes River:

GETTING BEYOND BLAME by Gail Snyder of the Deschutes Coalition

“Who hears the fishes when they cry?” Haunting words by Henry David Thoreau in reaction to declining salmon runs on the East Coast. Those fish, now long lost, have been referred to as ghost fish. We don’t know what used to be. We suffer from ecological amnesia. A hundred years after Deschutes River was dammed and diverted to irrigate arid lands, Thoreau’s piercing question echoes through time, how do we know what we have lost? Four years ago, a reality of my own front-yard river hit home for me. Our beautiful Deschutes once teemed with fish and wildlife. A century later, it’s transformed from a flourishing ecosystem to a highly altered, managed system with diminished habitat for native fish and wildlife. In Winter, Upper Deschutes is deprived of water as Wickiup Reservoir fills for the next year’s irrigation season. In Summer, it has too much water, overwhelming nat-

ural ecology and riverbanks. Angler Bruce Bischof wrote, “Although during peak summer flows, the river is beautiful by visual standards, it is virtually sterile by healthy stream standards.” Middle Deschutes, from Bend’s north end to Lake Billy Chinook, has an opposite problem, most water flowing through Mirror Pond is diverted into canals, leaving Middle Deschutes with too little water that heats quickly, reaching temperatures lethal to fish. As I lament ecological loss and advocate for change, I acknowledge we’ve benefited from the actions of our predecessors. I own the past that has allowed us to thrive here. Agriculture and urbanization have gone hand in hand, I reconcile with these intertwined histories of agriculture,urbanization, and the river that sustains us all. Two years ago, I co-founded Coalition for the Deschutes with the intention of speaking for the river. I learned the river’s story couldn’t be told without tell-

Photo by Dave Rein ing the story of irrigated agriculture and the communities that grew up around it. The stories and issues are complex, cultural, economic, historic, legal, societal, political, ecological, hydrological, and geological. The adage of the western U.S., that whiskey is for drinking’ and water is for fighting’, has a basis in reality. Plenty of blame is cast on the problems that beset the river, but unless we can all sit at a table to engage in authentic dialogue, listen carefully, let go of preconceptions, and move beyond blame, then we will run a risk of perpetuating the very status quo we seek to change. Today, Coalition for the Deschutes is working with farmers to restore the Deschutes River. We have a shared vision to restore our river and have secure, sustainable agriculture in Central Oregon. To achieve this vision means modernizing an irrigation system built a hundred years ago. Open canals are pretty but they’re not good habitat, they’re inefficient, obsolete and wasteful. Water lost to evaporation and seepage can and must be conserved in order for our rivers to be restored. Many of us do hear the fish when they cry. It took time to get into this situation, it will take time to get out. If we work together, stay focused on the big picture, we can restore our river while maintaining farmland and supporting farmers. What can you do? Join Coalition for the Deschutes, help us speak for the river. Buy pro-

duce from local farmers. Tell your elected officials you support irrigation modernization so conserved water can stay in the river. Foster a conservation ethic, don’t waste water in your home or yard, personal actions matter. Most important of all, keep an open mind and heart. Because our river needs you! “All living things on Earth need and deserve a night sky.”~ Kellie Pendoley Lights Out Bend (LOB) is a volunteer education and advocacy project. Our mission is to educate residents and business owners to turn off all unnecessary lighting, especially during Spring and Fall songbird migration seasons (April-July and August-November). Turning off lights allows migratory birds a safe, successful passage through urban environments. Millions of birds and insects fly overhead, navigating with great precision by starlight, landmarks and Earth’s magnetic field. Artificial lights disorient birds causing birds to circle lights, collide into windows and buildings or fall out of the sky resulting in injury or death. Collisions cause up to a BILLION bird deaths per year in North America.

“Many species, including humans, need darkness to survive and thrive.” American Medical Association Council. Due to light pollution, we rarely experience truly dark nights. Research suggests “artificial light at night can negatively affect human health, increasing risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and breast cancer.” (International Dark Sky Association). Artificial light disrupts circadian rhythm, our biologic clock and suppresses melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep, boosts the immune system, lowers cholesterol, helps thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes and adrenal glands function properly. What can you do? Turn off all unnecessary lights! Close curtains / blinds at night. Utilize motion sensors or install low intensity lighting.

Rights of Nature A Legal Revolution That Could Save The World By David Boyd Around the globe, a growing movement supports the idea that humans are not the only ones who deserve rights in this world. Lawyers are currently fighting for the rights of chimpanzees, rivers, forests, whales and Standing Rock Reservation to name a few. If nature has rights, then humans have responsibilities to uphold those rights. My favorite example in this book was the lawsuit between Disney and Sierra club over a resort that would have caused environmental calamity for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Supreme Justice William O. Douglas, a passionate outdoorsman ruled in favor of preserving nature, ͞if corporations can have rights then surely there should be rights for valleys, alpine meadows, rivers, lakes, mountains, beaches and all forms of nature and life should have these same rights from the pileated woodpecker, to trout in streams, to the land itself including soils, waters, plants and trees. For even air feels the destructive pressures of modern technology and modern life.͟David Boyd paints a powerful portrayal of hope for protecting our planet, he is an Environmental Lawyer, Professor, and advocate for the right to live in a healthy environment, a right worth fighting for.

Take a sip of water, is it salty? No. What percentage of water on Earth is fresh? 3%. That isn’t a lot of fresh water and 70% of that 3% is frozen, in the form of glaciers and icebergs!

What if all the Sea ice were to melt? Sea levels would go up 210 feet, creating an inland sea in Australia. Hope you don’t want to go to Disneyworld because all of Florida will be drowned out. Half of the world’s population lives on the coast, Tokyo, Shang Hai, New York. With a sea rise of even 20 feet, 630 Billion people will be homeless, 10% of the world’s population! Imagine 210 ft! Icebergs touching warm water melt first. Ice reflects sunlight, the more it melts the less it reflects, making oceans warmer plus the sea gets fresher. Currents that produce food and nutrients are powered by levels of saltiness, currents may change which would be extremely bad because half of the air we breathe is from plants in the sea. If all ice melts, Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves and reindeer will have to move because there will be no North Pole! Without ice, there will be more seismic blasting, a method where ships send explosions into the water to find oil, it’s very bad for whales.

What causes Global Warming? Greenhouse gases, from fossil fuels such as oil and coal, wrap around the Earth trapping heat from the Sun into our atmosphere. Since planets don’t sweat, it heats up.

Since then, lighting options can use a whopping 80% less energy. Light Emitting Diodes, known as LEDs, are extremely energy efficient and last up to 25 years. LEDs are often confused with their predecessor, swirly CFL Bulbs. LEDs offer better quality of light, turn on instantly, can be dimmed, and don’t contain mercury, offering a seamless transition to efficient lighting that doesn’t sacrifice any of the convenience that you are used to in a classic light bulb. The Energy Challenge of Central Oregon has a free LED installation program to set you up with up to 16 LEDs for free! A team will come out to help you decide which are your most heavily used lights in order to help you save the most energy. Average savings can be upwards of $100 each year! Tested for quality and performance. Look for Energy Trust signs. Read the Lighting Facts Label. Choose a bulb based on lumens, not watts. Lumens tell you how bright a bulb is; the higher the number, the brighter the light. Watts only tell you how much power it uses. A 11-watt LED, 15-watt CFL and 65watt incandescent all provide 800 lumens, but use different amounts of energy. Bulbs range in color from soft and warm to bright white. Light appearance is measured in Kelvin. Lower Kelvin numbers, around 2,700K, have a soft, yellow light and are good for bedrooms and living rooms. Higher numbers around 5,000K have a bright, white light used in work areas.

Recycling and the National Sword of China By Denise Rowcroft, Rethink Waste Project Manager at The Environmental Center In Central Oregon, our mixed recyclables are baled, sent to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and sorted. Machinery and people sort materials to be sold to different processors, who recycle it into new material. Most processors are overseas, China has bought the most material. This year China stopped imports of recycled, scrap material by refusing contaminated loads, potentially banning certain materials outright. National Sword regulation sends a strong message to the United States to clean up material streams. Wishful Recyclers will recycle everything with a recycling symbol on it or may be sending a message to the MRF’s that they should accept certain materials, so they just put it all in. MRF's sort and separate as fans blow paper, magnets attract metals, and people pick through everything else along a conveyor belt that moves swiftly. Loads sent overseas are often contaminated, China has had enough of our garbage! National Sword now only accepts clean loads of specific materials, slowing down our recycling system, resulting in stockpiling while new buyers are located overseas. There’s hope this will result in a revitalization of recycling here in the United States.

Keep Recycling, Recycle Right!

Make sure your household, office, and school are educated and up to speed about what can go in the bin. Here's a quick break down: PLASTICS: Bottles, tubs and jugs! Not one of those? Doesn’t Go! Even if it has a recycling symbol on it - virtually all plastic products do, it just tells us what kind it is. PAPER: Paper, paperboard and cardboard. If it has to be lined with something to keep liquids in, it can't be recycled including most paper plates, coffee cups, milk cartons and frozen food boxes. METAL: Cans, pie plates, tin foil. You can recycle all other scrap metal at our landfill, please don't put it in your mixed recycle cart. GLASS: Yes, glass jars and bottles, but absolutely they must be in the separate container that is provided or brought to the Bottle Drop for refund. Recycling right requires energy, yet better than extracting virgin material from our earth. Go beyond recycling to waste prevention. An environmental life cycle focuses on where garbage came from in the first place and all the associated impacts, then buying products with less packaging whenever possible!

Ask a Gardening Midwife Q: Last year my corn patch did great but this year the leaves are yellow and the plants look sad. Is this from planting them in the same place several years in a row? Corn likes high levels of nitrogen in the soil, if grown in the same soil for several seasons the soil becomes depleted. Imbalance in soil health is manifested by deficiencies in plants and roots. Our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen! Only certain plants like legumes (beans and peas) capture it to bring it into their plant body. It is the collective work of fungi, protozoa, and organisms like earthworms that hold the key to unlocking nutrients in your garden. Soil is alive, like the microbiome of the human body. While corn consumes high levels of nitrogen, legumes return it, and this is why rotating crops increases the health and productivity of your garden. Crop rotation can be as simple as keeping a journal to draw pictures of your beds to track where you plant things year to year, using a rotation cycle as a guide.

By LeeAnnKreigh This guide has been great fun when finding strange things in Bend parks. I was at Shevlin Park with a group of students who found what looked like a large worm, but not quite. Thanks to the book we found out it was a rubber boa! I had no idea there were relatives of the boa constrictor in Bend. I love the scavenger hunt guides in the back, which could make a quick hike turn into a mystery hike, great for keeping kids engaged. One of the biggest surprises I’ve had leading students and campers in Bend is flowers in sagebrush deserts. In a wonderful un-developed part of Pine Nursery park, we stumbled upon the Green-Banded Mariposa Lily. These beautiful, purple Lilies seem to grow in dust. I was shocked to see anything other than sagebrush and juniper, we found dozens of these lilies reminding me of an Easter egg hunt on a 90 degree day in July. This book is filled with over 350 plants and animals of Bend, native legends and fun facts. It’s like having a Naturalist on the trail with you as a great resource guide for exploring Central Oregon.
