Our cover is just one segment of the 10,000 Buddhas Amanda Giacomini has set out to paint around the world. These Buddhas, found in Washington, D.C., were blessed by several Buddhist Monks who did an auspicious ceremony. They created an altar, chanted and prayed for whoever looks upon these Buddhas would be healed and all their suffering would be relieved. Amanda allowed us to place these holy Buddhas on our cover to offer healing to each and every one of you who gazes upon them. Amanda was inspired to paint 10,000 Buddhas after visiting Ajanta caves in India, 2000 years old, rock cut Buddhist caves with incredible 2 || BEND HEALTH GUIDE || WINTER 2017
ancient images of Buddha. One painting “1,000 Buddhas” told a story about Buddha teaching students to be humble, not to show off their super yogic powers or to compete in anyway with each other. Some students grumbled that Buddha only said that because he did not have any super enlightened powers. Then Buddha performed a miracle for his students, he replicated himself 1,000 times, as if to say all 1,000 Buddhas we’re all the same, none better than the other, teaching his students humility and compassion for each other. This is a story of bringing people together. In Buddhism, there are 3 Jewels: Buddha, enlightened Teacher, Dharma, the Teachings and Sangha, the
community that comes together to practice the dharma in a group to bring about and maintain spiritual awareness. 1 0 , 0 0 0 Buddhas celebrates the Sangha, reminding us we are more powerful together than apart, this can be seen in times of trouble especially. When communities come together to support the same goals, they truly support each other. Such as coming together to do Yoga, it brings strength to our practice when we join together in a group. Just like the massive group of Yogis who came out to see MC YOGI and Amanda at Wren and Wild Yoga Studio in Bend! Doing Yoga in that size group has super powerful energy! It is like this with the 10,000 Buddhas, all Buddhas coming together for the same goal: enlightenment. No one Buddha is better than anyone else, we are all the same, no matter what religion you follow, you can gain insights from this teaching to be humble, patient, kind and generous. As Amanda so beautifully put it, “you can become a gardener of your thoughts. What do you want to grow? Weeds or flowers and fruits. Awareness allows you to plant seeds of positivity. Amanda is planting these seeds of light all over the world with her 10,000 Buddhas, you can find at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, La Quinta Resort, Asheville, NC, D.C. and what if, just what if we had some Buddhas here in Bend, Oregon?! How amazing that would be!!! Who has a Wall available for Buddhas? If you are interested, contact her on her website or maybe just buy some Buddhas for your living room in her shop? 10000Buddhas.com

Responding to the Opoid Crisis Holistic Health Research is responding to Opioid Crisis Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) an independent, nonprofit organization has allocated $5.7 million to fund studies for holistic therapies for treating low back pain including massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise therapy, and physical or occupational therapy, while restricting access to opioids. In the U.S., opioid addiction and overdose deaths have reached epidemic proportions, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, up to 650,000 Americans could die from opioid addiction over the next decade. This holistic therapy study is based at Kaiser Foundation Research Institute, a division of Kaiser Permanente, and will take the form of a natural experiment, comparing outcomes in patients with low back pain to provide access to Holistic Health options for nondrug treatments. The study’s projected end date is July 2020. Medical professions may finally accept what many of us have known, Holistic Health offers a safer, more effective treatment than opioid pain killers. What I Learned from my Son written by Sue Bream My son, Scott, died of a heroin overdose at age 27. One day he’s a newborn baby, light of my life, next he’s struggling with addiction issues. We tried to help our son, but he could not stay away from drugs and alcohol. Research shows addiction is a disease, not a choice. When Scott was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with ADHD and Tourette’s Syndrome, then treated with medication. Taking drugs to feel “normal” was a part of his identity, he grew up doing it. In school he had oppositional, focusing and impulse control issues. He had a flair for art, played trumpet, was in Boy Scouts and a brown belt in Tae Kwando. He was very social, he always made friends. Scott’s teen years started with high hopes, his Bar Mitzvah was one of the proudest moments of our lives. Then he lost interest in activities, got in trouble at school and experimented with drugs. By high school, he was in Juvenile Detention, then jail, a group home, and continuing to experiment with drugs. After a break-up with his girlfriend of 5 years, his use of heroin and meth increased, he was living in a homeless camp. Last time we saw him, he came home after being gone for a month. We hugged, cried and he promised to be safe before leaving. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, nearly 35,000 people in the U.S. died of heroin or opioids in 2015. Fentanyl can cause overdose in seconds, as it did with our son. My Advice Pay Attention, warning signs are there: skipping school, drug paraphernalia, apathy and lethargy. Communicate, Scott had open conversations with his Dad until he got into heroin. Love unconditionally, but don’t enable, don’t allow bad behavior under your roof. Seek help, we tried Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and counselors but he did not want to do the work. We hung onto a glimmer of hope that he would change. Learn about addiction, some brains are “wired” for addictions (National Geographic, 9/17 Science of Addiction). Don’t let yourselves be dragged down, Scott had many opportunities to turn his life around, but he made destructive choices. As painful as that was, we had to keep on living our lives, knowing we tried our best. Thank you for reading our story. I hope it gives insight about how addiction effects family. We always told him we loved him and would be there for him, he died with that knowledge. This story was edited, read the full story @ bendhealthguide.com
Tai Chi, Once Alternative, Now Mainstream written by Karin Chen and Master JianFeng Chen of Oregontaichi.com
Many people are drawn to Tai Chi, for the long and rich history, ties to Chinese Medicine, connection to Eastern philosophy (i.e. Tao Te Ching) and martial art aspect. Medical studies support the health benefits students have experienced. Tai Chi is an effective tool for overall health and another option for management of chronic pain and depression. Many students begin a journey of Tai Chi for a low-impact exercise to regain movement after an injury, or as a way to manage stress. Often called “moving meditation” Tai Chi focuses on the idea of “balance” or being “centered”. Balance discussed in practice is not just stability, but the importance of balance in every aspect of living, such as working, eating, resting, emotions and exercise. Tai Chi looks like a beautiful, mysterious dance, however, each movement when done correctly, has a purpose of directing energy in the body. Even in the first movement of placing your feet, breath is coordinated with the foot, connecting your energy to Earth. Every movement has a coordinating breath and focus of energy placement.
The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi shares Eight Active Ingredients of Tai Chi as: Awareness, Intention, Structural Integration, Active Relaxation, Strengthening Flexibility, Natural Breathing, Social Support and Embodied Spirituality. “Like components of a multi-drug combination to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, each ingredient is believed to have a unique impact on the physiology of the body”(Wayne, Peter PHD). As a long time practitioner and instructor of Tai Chi, Master JianFeng Chen of Oregon Tai Chi Wushu can attest to these benefits and “Social Support” is an often overlooked yet crucial aspect of practice. He tells his students to not compare yourself to others practicing, but to share with your fellow students. The practice of learning an art together holds you accountable not just to yourself, but the community, and from this shared energy comes more strength and balance. All ages and abilities can practice, with many styles and forms of Tai Chi, there is a lifetime of learning to keep the student engaged. Once you have learned basic foundations, you can practice anytime, anywhere, alone or in a group. “Balance, Focus, Health for Life” is the philosophy at Oregon Tai Chi Wushu and what Master Chen strives to help the community achieve through Tai Chi.

Mary’s Medicinals Patches: Trade in your Pills for a Patch! My Neck! My Back! Insomnia! Anxiety! Historically, these ailments were treated by pharmaceuticals with potential side effects. Consumers looked for alternative treatments like medicinal cannabis for anxiety, chronic pain, arthritic discomfort, insomnia, and nausea. An evidence based approach led to legalization of medical cannabis in 29 states with more ballot measures pending. So why transdermal patches? Consumer’s aversion to smoking encouraged new options, like Mary’s Medicinals, a Colorado based apothecary transdermal patch for cannabis. Transdermal dosing with a skin patch has been used for pain, smoking cessation, and hormone replacement. Medication by skin patch isn’t subjected to stomach acid neutralization, liver filtering, etc., giving consumers a better result. So, how do I use the patch technology? Oregrown Industries, Inc. and Mary’s Medicinals locally produced transdermal patches using Oregrown’s own organic cannabis strains. Five different patches use various cannabinoid compounds of CBD,THC-a, CBN, and Indica/Sativa THC, intended to treat specific conditions. Questions? Who wouldn’t have them! Come to Oregrown’s flagship store on Wall Street in Bend to ask about your conditions and treatment goals. Choose a patch for your issue, slap it on, and experience relief that international research has shown effective! Oregrown.com

Exploring Vocal Freedom as a Healing Art written by Cullie Treichler
Singing is a spiritual practice for me, my voice is one of my greatest Teachers in life. Developing myself as a singer and voice teacher continues to be a transformative process. It invites me to drop into myself at a deeper, quieter level, learning to listen to the wisdom of my body. I realize how busy my mind is, how I get caught in a ping-pong loop between thoughts and emotions, resulting in anxiety. Any work that invites conscious awareness in the body has potential to be transformative and healing. We have to be present to what’s happening now, in our bodies, in order to sing well. Singing is the most vulnerable thing I’ve done in life. My desire to find my voice and express my heart with beauty and ease outweighed my sheer terror of making an ugly sound in the presence of others. Most people I’ve worked with have a degree of performance anxiety. It saddens me because it often stems from hurtful messages received early in life that we can’t sing, so the desire to share one’s voice in the world is abandoned. My work with singers is sacred. I honor the courage it takes to stay engaged with the discovery process of being human in a creative act of singing. I work with individuals who want to deepen their connection to themselves and others by finding their natural voice. You don’t need to be a singer to benefit from this work. If you want to improve your breathing, learn to chant, open your chakras or find a creative wellspring. When we access an unhindered connection to our breath with vocal folds, a vibration is created that has many health benefits. It is grounding, calming and invites presence to the given moment. 20 years ago, I could’ve never imagined where singing would lead me in life. It continues to walk me through thresholds of fear and limitations. It’s a spiraling journey home to one’s true self, accessing the center of Being, where beautiful sound originates. PAIN RELIEF
91 people die every day due to the Opioid Crisis in the US, over half a million lives lost since 2000 reported by CDC. According to National Institute of Health, opiates are good for short term pain not chronic pain. Consistent use of opioids leads to tolerance and addiction. Opioids, like Oxycontin and Fentanyl, depress respiratory centers of the brainstem, leading to respiratory arrest and overdose-related death. A solution to the Opioid epidemic, according to Dr. Dustin Sulak of Healer.com, is cannabis, used for pain relief for thousands of years. Prior to 1940s, cannabis was in medicinal remedies in America. Studies show cannabis to be effective against pain and inflammation. Cannabis is changing opioid statistics. From 1999-2010, states with medical cannabis lowered opioid related deaths by 30%. Cannabis is effective because it promotes homeostasis within the endocannabinoid system (ECB). Receptors for ECB system are found primarily in the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Receptors are responsible for our perception of pain and inflammation in the body. The body makes “cannabis like” compounds that bind to these receptors to function like cannabis. These compounds, 2-ag and AEA, regulate perception of pain and inflammation. Simply stated cannabis supports the body’s natural healing process. 12 || BEND HEALTH GUIDE || WINTER 2017
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are compounds found in cannabis that interact with ECB. THC and CBD synergistically work on receptors to reduce pain. THC is the psychoactive part of the plant, CBD is the healer component. CBD benefits mental health, THC is an intoxicating compound. CBD alters effects of THC canceling out unwanted side-effects from THC, such as rapid heart rate. Over time, these compounds raise the endocannabinoid tone in the body, protecting it. When choosing a cannabis medicine, it should contain some THC due to this synergistic, amplified effect. Unlike opioids, cannabis does not have receptors within the brain stem, the main reason it does not cause respiratory depression or overdose. Activation of the ECB system allows people to wean off opiates with alleviation of their pain. Cannabis can save lives in this opioid crisis. For more information on CBD research and news, visit ProjectCBD.org. Cesar Escobar is a registered respiratory therapist, cannabis researcher, and founder of Motavatedhealer. com, a nonprofit organization in companionship with Flowerchild CBD. Motavatedhealer sends patients to Flowerchild CBD, CBD medicine that is lab tested for purity, cleanliness, effectiveness, and they are local.

EMDR for Pain Management written by Sean Downes We’ve all experienced physical or emotional pain, discomfort, and suffering. Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Pain is categorized as acute, short term or chronic, ongoing. Chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability, it can occur with depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. I’ve worked in pain management with physicians who understood psychotherapy as an essential component to treat pain. A therapeutic process proven to be effective in pain relief: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is a natural, mind-body therapy that treats your nervous system, the whole condition, not just one part. It’s an integrative approach, enabling relief from pain, emotional distress, trauma and other experiences that may hinder comfort and happiness. We all have experiences we’d like to forget. EMDR is a process that facilitates neutralization of experiences that affect us. People with a compromised nervous system from traumatic events, tend to be more sensitized to pain. People with chronic pain may have an adversarial relationship to their pain. EMDR from a qualified psychotherapist is clinically proven to work through issues to change your relationship to and experience of pain. Sean Downes is a Licensed Psychotherapist, trained in EMDR. Sean uses an integrative approach; combining talk therapy and mind-body awareness.

written by Elyse Williams MS, CNS, RH In an age of opioid crisis, herbal remedies offer pain management. As an intimate part of our planet, we can use medicines growing in our backyard or found in our kitchen spice cabinet. Healing begins with our relationship to our own bodies. Pain networks in the body tell us to: STOP, slow down, breathe, listen to what your body is telling you. Pain may originate in the mind with trauma or emotional blocks, nervous system receives cues from the body. By listening to our body’s communication of pain response, we can ease our pain using our natural biochemical allies, plants! Excess heat and inflammation: Use warming herbs, spices to assist your immune system’s inflammation response: cayenne pepper, ginger, and mustard seed (crushed up in packs on arthritic knees…with caution, can burn if left on too long!): acts as anti-inflammatories and anodynes (relieve pain). Constricting spasm/pain of digestive tract: Use digestive stimulants, smooth muscle relaxants like teas of cinnamon, peppermint, and orange rind to bring circulation and ease to painful bellies. SAD (seasonal affective disorder): Warming relaxant herbs like rosemary, marjoram, and thyme can be added to soothing teas, warm baths, steam inhalations (put head covered by towel over boiling pot of herbs to catch aromatic steam, inhale) eye pillows for rest and restoration during darkening days. My favorite: rosemary essential oil drops on far side of shower to diffuse as steam inhalation.

Healthy Relationships as Painkillers
written by Alice Baldwin O’Keefe When we feel our partner “has our back” and believes in us we are stronger to face life’s challenges. Researchers realize a secure and connected relationship reduces our experience of pain. Dr. Sue Johnson, pioneer of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) discovered it when she asked participants to go into an MRI machine and receive a series of moderately painful electric shocks to an ankle. Therapy is not just for times of crisis but a good part They measured the brain’s reaction to pain when a stranger, of self-care and life enhancement that then a spouse held the subject’s hand. Couples with difficulty promotes love + connection. in their relationship had no difference in pain, whether a stranger or a spouse held their hand, it hurt. After EFCT, Providing couples and individuals with a results changed. Having intimate, connected, emotionally holistic blend of research-based therapies safe, and bonding conversations, guided by a therapist, and a creative, heart-centered approach. there was improvement in their relationship. After therapy, participants return to the shocking MRI machine, this time pain was reported as merely “uncomfortable” when their spouse held their hand, the brain reveals that the participant is calm and secure. We can change our perception of pain, by feeling more connected and supported in love. It is said an average couple waits 6 years before seeking therapy to support their relationship. I hope this research inspires you to seek support you need proactively. Natural Pain Relief through Nutrition
written by Mari Jacobson, NTP Pain is a signal your body sends that something is wrong. If your goal is to manage chronic pain, consider seeking an alternative health provider to assist you. As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I try to uncover the root cause of your pain, then rebuild the body so it can heal the affected area. If pain is a result of a surgery or injury, consider combining different modalities for optimal relief. Here are ways that Nutrition can help with pain relief. Hydration. If the body is dehydrated, a signal is thirst, then pain. Water lubricates joints, organs, aids the body in transport of essential nutrients, and in the elimination of waste products. Manage Chronic Inflammation. Consider switching to an “anti-inflammatory diet. Eliminate sugars, processed foods, increase organic fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, fish and lean meats into your diet. Avoid foods that cause inflammation like peanuts, eggs, soy, wheat and dairy. In an elimination diet,

we gradually add items back in your diet that are non-reactive. Add Bone Broth, it contains collagen, minerals, nutrients and amino acids to support joint health. Green Tea has anti-oxidants. Add anti-inflammatory spices: Turmeric, cayenne, wasabi, ginger, cinnamon, clove, garlic, oregano, sage, thyme, and marjoram are anti-oxidants that combat inflammation. Add supplements. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium and minerals. Vitamin E and C are Anti-oxidants for growth, repair of tissues, and wound healing. Glucosamine for joint pain and Omega 3 Fish Oil have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Probiotics found naturally in fermented foods like sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, kefir or in supplements, promote good bacteria in your gut, all health begins in the gut. Seeking Nutritional Therapy to improve your health is a great first step in long term pain management. Small, sustainable changes in your eating habits will move you towards a better quality of life. Good health takes time, be patient with yourself and celebrate small successes.
Treating Pain with Meditation written by Jay Wence
There are many kinds of pain: physical, mental, and emotional. Acute or chronic pain can make it difficult to go about life. Meditation is one way to treat pain. After years of supporting clients, I learned that pain, suffering and trauma is held in the body. While our minds might suffer holding a neural message that we hurt, our awareness (spirit, soul, or consciousness) does not suffer. Our awareness is clear like space, full of boundless love and compassion. One way to work with our awareness is with “form” meditation. Pick one of five senses, sight for instance. Light a candle, sit holding your spine as straight and comfortably as you can. Place your awareness on watching the candle’s flame with awareness that you’re watching the flame. You may become distracted, think a thought, follow it down a rabbit hole of your mind. Don’t despair, when you notice you’re distracted, go back to watching the flame. Your awareness calls you back. Then pay attention to your pain. Don’t get distracted by internal stories about your suffering, just be present and experience your pain. Be aware of where your pain resides. In the mind or body? Watch if the pain is constant, or if it comes and goes. Does the act of paying attention change it? With practice, you can become familiar with this awareness, then apply it to your daily life. Book Review
Opium Eaters By Carlyn Zwarenstein
North Americans are the world’s most compulsive and prolific opioid abusers. In a modern day twist of Thomas De Quincey’s “Confessions of an English Opium Eater”, writer Carlyn Zwarenstein recounts her search for relief from her tragic degenerative autoimmune disease “Ankylosing Spondylitis” a condition that is on the rise, an inflammatory arthritis that strikes people in the prime of their life, in her case 28 years old. This condition causes excruciating spine pain. Her tragic tale recounts her use of Tramadol with euphoric ups, hallucinatory lows and desperate pharmacy visits as her addiction sets in, all while balancing the demands of being a working mother. She researches the history of opioid use throughout history, pop culture and into our current Opioid Crisis, which began in the 1990s when Pharmaceutical companies heavily marketed so many varieties of Opioid Painkillers, once restricted, now encouraged for even the most minor injuries. Unintentional deaths due to Opioid addiction and overdose quadrupled within a single decade. 15 million people worldwide are currently dependent on opiates. North Americans are the world’s most compulsive and prolific opioid abusers. She speaks towards the end of her hope for alternatives, cannabis being the most promising. This book itself becomes an addiction, I found it hard to put it down, it goes so fast and then it leaves you wanting more! WINTER 2017 || BEND HEALTH GUIDE || 21

at Body Integrity for 10 years. She attended COCC, specializing in chronic pain and injury treatment. Kali’s bodywork sessions combine Deep Tissue and Myokinetic Therapy to unlock patterns that create discomfort, tension and pain. Many people report feeling years younger after receiving this type of bodywork, stating they “had forgotten that they used to feel this way,” or “didn’t know they could feel so good.” The foundation of a session is Deep Tissue, slow strokes and static holds that invite tissues to soften and release muscle contracture, rebalance the body and create foundational support. Myokinetic Therapy is integrated to further balance the body and increase joint mobility. Kali’s approach emphasizes dialogue between her and her clients so they can take as active a role in their health goals as they desire. www.bodyintegrityclinics.com or at 541.408.3510.

Infrared BioMat
Deep Heat for Natural Pain Relief by Terie Sandusky, LMT
We live in a time where toxins bombard our bodies: herbicides, pesticides, chemicals in our air and water plus general pollutants surround us. Toxins are linked to pain, sickness, cancer and dis-ease in our bodies, reducing toxins makes us feel better. The body has its own ways of detoxing, usually with heat, like a fever when you are fighting a virus, but because our bodies are overwhelmed by more toxins coming in than the body can process, toxins build up over time and end up causing a wide variety of health issues. Far Infrared Heat can remove toxins by increasing the body’s blood circulation and natural detoxification process. Far Infrared Light if we could see it, would appear in the farthest red portion of a rainbow or an electromagnetic spectrum. Researchers discovered Amethyst crystals were able to magnify high frequency, Far Infrared light waves into the greatest spectrum of bio-availability, in essence making far infrared much more effective & easy for the body to absorb and use. Infrared Biomat with Amethyst crystals delivers the deepest infrared heat, superior to a sauna because regular heat has difficulty passing through our body’s own protective layers and skin. Far Infrared Heat magnified by Amethyst crystals can penetrate 6 inches deep to create intense heat causing cells to wake up, actually move, detoxify and begin a healing process. Infrared Sauna only reaches 2 inches in depth. Biomat’s Far infrared rays are closest to sunlight’s frequency without harmful UV/UVB radiation. NASA conducted the first research on Far Infrared spectrum 20 years ago, receiving scientific attention for its beneficial healing capabilities. Studies show Far Infrared stimulated production of healthy cell tissue, promoted fast relief from injury, decreased pain levels, eliminated cellular waste, encouraged detoxification at a cellular level and increased oxygen to tissues all while increasing blood circulation. FDA approved Biomat Infrared for pain relief from muscle spasms, sprains, strains, joint pain, arthritis, muscle injuries and improved sleep quality in patients with chronic pain. Biomat has had positive effects in research for patients with cancerous tumors, seasonal affect depression (S.A.D) and Chronic Pain. Access Bars for Pain Relief by Jennifer Morrey
What if your body could heal itself quicker than you have ever imagined? What if there is a simple and dynamic tool available that helps to unlock our body’s potential? Access Bars® is an energetic, light touch modality that unravels parts of us that have not allowed quick and easy change to occur in our bodies. Imagine you went cliff diving and didn’t stick the landing. OUCH! You now have the biggest, blackest bruise on your thigh you have ever seen. The doctors tell you it will be about 3 to 4 weeks for it to heal completely. What if something else was possible? My client came to see me for her first Bars® session never mentioning her cliff diving accident. During her Bars® session I lightly held 32 points on her head for about 75 minutes. A day after our session she told me her bruise healed miraculously overnight, 3 to 4 weeks turned into just a few days! Her body was able to unleash self-healing capacities. What pains and discomforts are you experiencing in your body that you’d like to change? What if Access Bars® could contribute? Bars® can also help with sleep, anxiety, moods, clarity and generally adding more joy to your life. There are infinite possibilities available to you and your body. I have always been interested in the body mind connection and how to achieve optimum performance. As a former national kettlebell champion this was crucial. The main modalities I practice and have received certificates in are Kinesiology, Deep Tissue Massage and Access Bars® energetic healing. I have been giving massages for over a decade and for the last 4 years have offered Bars® sessions Find me at: 365 NE Quimby Ave Suite 2 jenniferevemorey@gmail.com www.jenniferevemorey.com

Fascial Stretch Therapy for Pain Relief
by Tyler Kragerud Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is a technique used to stretch the body using a series of natural movements. FST isused by elite athletes around the globe including teams within the Olympic Games, NFL, and NHL.
How does FST differ from massage? It’s performed with clothes on, eliminating a need for draping and allows the practitioner to maneuver a body through all ranges of motion (ROM). FST utilizes straps to anchor down one leg at a time, allowing opposite leg to move more freely through ROM without compensation patterns. It uses a client’s’ own body to massage itself from the inside out! Each FST stretch is performed with mild traction to create space within the joint capsule. This increase in space allows deep fascial restrictions to release, then increases circulation and healing. By accessing and mobilizing a joint in 360-degrees, long-standing fascial restrictions that inhibit proper movement can be assessed and eliminated. The combination of traction, joint mobilization, and pain-free movement releases areas of the body that may not get touched by other therapies. How does FST differ from regular stretching? A comparison between FST and traditional stretching can be illustrated with the hamstrings. FST targets the entire posterior chain of myofascial tissue, a hamstring stretch via FST can be felt from the bottom of a person’s foot through the calf, hip, and up through the spine. We view the body as a whole, so we treat it as one. We are trained to feel and release hips, thighs, lower leg, spine, shoulders, arms, and neck via myofascial meridians. Who can benefit from FST? Those who hold tension in their connective tissues, such as joint stiffness, hip and low back tension/pain or a feeling of whole-body tightness, fatigue, or imbalance. Active populations such as recreational athletes are a great fit for FST and the aging population that desires pain-free movement. What’s the best part about FST? Results LAST!

Good Grief Guidance
We may have grief from divorce, death, illness, depression or other situations. To live is to be vulnerable. We suffer and rejoice. In changing our relationship with grief, we begin to live the love and beauty of who we are. Good Grief Guidance understands to befriend our sorrows and release outgrown stories of ourselves, we can transform our pains and losses into healing. We become empowered to move from a place of surviving to thriving, within ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we engage in a larger community. In a peersupport setting, healing is facilitated by creating a safe place of connection to affirm the value of each individual, recognizing each person as whole, unbroken, without need for saving. In each grief group, whether in schools, prisons, or the community, people tend to their grief by tending to one another. Each person is seen, heard and held through the witnessing of our respective wounds in community. Through this collective act of love, they may listen to and trust in the grief needing to be voiced, embraced and healed within themselves. Good Grief Guidance, Inc. is a local non-profit founded by Darlene Gertsch 10 years ago. It’s a movement for emotional well-being in the Central Oregon Community, made possible through offerings of grief groups, weekly drop-in gatherings, and workshops, available to teens and adults.

Acupuncture for Pain Relief
David Gaines, LAc
Recent headlines show what many have experienced: Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) work for relieving pain. FDA announced new recommendations for Doctors to consider complementary medicines like acupuncture for pain management before prescribing opioids. Remember 2016 US Olympic swim team’s cupping marks, their trainers used cupping for muscle pain and to improve circulation for better athletic performance. Acupuncturist modalities to get you on the path to healing include: Acupuncture: the goal of acupuncture is to stimulate and balance the flow of qi, or “vital energy,” in acupuncture meridians. Studies show acupuncture releases endorphins, the body’s own, natural pain-relieving chemicals, releases feelgood neurotransmitters like serotonin, increases circulation and reduces muscle tension. Cupping: Cupping uses heat to create a vacuum in a glass cup applied to the body. Cups are either left in one place or moved along soft tissues. Gentle suction of cups opens up circulation of blood, fluids and qi in the muscles and soft tissue, useful for pain relief and muscle tension. Moxibustion: A form of heat therapy with small amounts of a dried herb called moxa, or mugwort, are burned on or over the skin. Warmth invigorates and supports flow of qi in the body and meridians. Moxa softens scar tissue, a root cause of pain. Herbal Medicine: Herbs have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects without adverse effects of NSAID or opioid drugs. TCM uses herbs in pain treatment, including: turmeric, ginger, angelica, and corydalis. Book Review The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul By Danielle LaPorte More than a book, this is a life changing movement with workshops across the country. We’re taught about goals all wrong, we’re not chasing a goal, we’re chasing a feeling, we hope the goal will give us. We go after stuff we want to get, or accomplish, hoping to be fulfilled, but it’s backwards. “Goals with Soul” focuses on how you want to feel first, then how will you get there? The Desire Map is a holistic life-planning tool that turns ambitions inside out to offer an inspired way to manifest. • Identify “core desired feelings” in every life domain: livelihood, lifestyle, body, wellness, creativity, learning, relationships, society, essence and spirituality • Create “Goals with Soul” to generate those feelings • Find happiness within and the rest will follow It’s a fun book to read in Book Clubs or with friends because you will have revelations you’ll want to share and you’ll be enlightened by their A-Ha moments, too! My favorite was “Ease Up on Expectations”, release attachment to outcome. You think you know what your goal is going to look and feel like, but leave room for an unexpected surprise of possibly even greater goodness! “Do Less, Get More” because “hard work we are obsessed with is overrated!” I found it fun to flip through this book, try on different concepts, do the activities as they called to me, maybe because I’m a busy working Mom. If you have 5 minutes, you can tune in to find powerful tools to create your dreams in the best way possible with Soul Power! This is a book to go to when you’re burnt out or bored, ignite your passion once more, even if it’s just reading the 150 Positive Feelings or reminding yourself to “Show up & Shine!”

HANDCRAFTED KNIVES www.carterknifeco.com
Making knives is about putting a beautiful, usable tool into the hands of someone who would love to own one. I make knives that can be used for any purpose. Keeping my knives practical is a large part of my goal as a knife maker. Go out into the field and gut an elk, wear your knife on your side daily or just keep it around to slice some cheese.

Orgone is a concept from Willhelm Reich, who stated deficits or constrictions in bodily orgone were at the root of many diseases. Dr. Reich found that organic materials, like crystals attract and hold orgone energy, while non-organic metals simultaneously attract and repel the energy. Orgonite is a substance made of resin, metals and quartz that balances and harmonises bio-energy, otherwise known as orgone, chi or prana. It’s a 50-50 mix of resin (organic, due to the fact that it is based on petrochemicals), and metal shavings (inorganic) combined with crystals (organic) that cleans stagnant and negative energy from people & spaces, it is especially helpful in clearing EMF and radiation. You can find beautiful Orgonites on Etsy.

In 9 Star Ki 2018 is a 9 Fire Year with action, passion, vivid illumination and a burning light that shines on ALL things, secrets and hidden matters will come to light! This year focuses on mediation, collaboration, win-win resolutions to conflicts and attuning to the light.
