Huntly Residents Voice Concerns N.Nicholas Editor
Ever had the feeling you weren’t being listened too or taken seriously even when you knew you were right? We interview Lindsay Sargent long term resident of Huntly whom for years has been campaigning to improve drainage and the management of creeks in Huntly. With winter looming and high rainfall events becoming increasingly prevalent Lindsay’s concerns are now more relevant than ever. In 2011 Lindsay was approached by a Council Director asking for his input and personal knowledge of flooding and its effects on the local area in Huntly. As a result of several public meetings which were held at the time, an Epsom Huntly Flood group was formed to which Lindsay was appointed. Continued pg 6.

Citizens In Bendigo Unite Against The CCP Representatives of Falan Gong otherwise known as Falan Dafa recently held a rally in Bendigo. Their aim to promote awareness regarding the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ongoing persecution of their followers and other groups such as Christians
and Uyghur Muslims. The event was well atttended by members of the Chinese community and others including our own Councillor Vaughan Williams. Host Armstrong Lazenby in a recent interview with the Bendigo Monthly summed
up the groups cause. “The Chinese Communist Party has a tragic history of suppressing and persecuting both people and religions who are deemed an ‘enemy of the state’, simply because they think differently to communism. For example, Buddhism,
Taoism, Confucianism, were persecuted during the CCP’s cultural revolution when the regime attempted to wipe out the soul of China’s 5000-year-old civilisation. While I know that not everyone is religious, I do believe having the freedom to believe is important and is a human right. In the case of Falun Dafa, doing the gentle exercises and living by the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance has brought me better mental and physical health. Yet, such a great and simple spiritual practice is banned by the CCP. It’s a very unfair and sad situation to see so many good people be taken advantage of for money and power by a brutal regime that censors and murders its own people.” Want to know more, then subscribe to the Epoch Times news service online for up to date news.

Napier Street White Hills bus stop petition Over the last several months Wendy Lovell Liberal MP for Nothern Victoria has been contacted by many residents and shopkeepers expressing safety concerns at a newly installed public bus stop outside a group of shops at 507 Napier Street White Hills. She raised these concerns with the Minister for Roads at the time, both by letter and in State Parliament, but the bus stop was constructed, nonetheless. The bus stop was constructed between two driveways used by vehicles to enter and exit the off-street carpark of the shops. The concern within the White Hills community is so great that a petition co-ordinated by a local shopkeeper is now in circulation, calling on the State Government to relocate the bus stop from

Bendigo Couple win Victorian Representation to the Australian Dancesport Superstar Spectacular Sam Brown, 18 years, and Berkley Wood, 17 years, danced recently at the Victorian Dancesport Superstar Spectacular. The couple compete in the U21 years age division and won all 3 Dancesport disciplines in Ballroom (Standard,) New Vouge and Latin American. 2020 Covid restrictions cancelled all Dance competitions for the year including The Australian Championships. The Australian Dancing Society
developed the Dancesport Superstar Spectacular to replace the National Event. Each State has held a State Semi Final to select their State Representatives to the Final which will be held later this year. Victoria held their State selection last weekend. As well as winning all of their U21 events Sam and Berkley also danced up into the Adult Open Events, placing 1st in the Adult Open New Vogue, 2nd in the Adult Open Ballroom and 4th in the Adult Open
Latin American. Berkley said “it was great to be out on the dancefloor and competing again. After 15 months without competitions I think we were so excited and happy to be competing again that we just gave it everything, I think that’s why we did so well.” Sam (originally from Shepparton) has shifted to Bendigo to study Physiotherapy at La Trobe University Bendigo Campus and Berkley is in Year 12 at
Victory Christian College and is also studying Business at La Trobe University through the Achieve Plus Program. Sam and Berkley train at IDance Dance Studio in Barnard St Bendigo. They are looking forward to a successful 2021 and Dance Career together. Covid also dealt the couple another blow. At the 2019 Australian Championships they won the 2020 Australian Representative positions to the U19 10
Dance World Championships in Spain and the U21 Ballroom World Championships in Russia. Due to Covid restrictions and the lack of International travel both of these Events were cancelled. For those interested to see Sam and Berkley dance, the ADS Bendigo Dancesport Classic competition is scheduled to be held in Bendigo on 23rd October 2021, further details will be available closer to the event.

Helicopter survey provides new data on Victoria’s game ducks

Rotary Club of Bendigo supports Drought Communities in North West Victoria Although crop yields were good last season last season many families and communities in northwestern Victoria are still suffering from the previous years of drought. To assist families the Rotary Club of Bendigo has provided scholarships of $500 to encourage students to complete year 12. A total of six scholarships were awarded to students in Mildura, Robinvale, Swan Hill and Sea Lake who are studying year 12 in 2021. The scholarships were funded from the proceeds
of the art show “Life on the Land – Our Rural Heroes” which was the instigated by local Bendigo artist Terry Jarvis and presented by the Rotary Club of Bendigo in November 2019. The Club has also recently worked with the Commonwealth Drought Community Outreach Program. A pilot aerial survey to estimate the total number of game ducks in Victoria was released last Thursday by the Game Management Authority. The aerial survey found an estimated total population of almost 2.5 million game ducks, giving a more detailed understanding of the number of game ducks in the state. This number is much higher than previous methodologies have indicated and means that the sustainable harvest level can be increased. The aerial survey was conducted by experienced wildlife consultants counting the number of game ducks from a helicopter, on over 650 waterbodies including wetlands and farm dams. Satellite imagery was then used to determine the amount of water in the land-
scape and the actual number of ducks counted was then multiplied to estimate the total number of ducks present at that time. Prior to this, the Eastern Australian Waterbird Survey has been used for setting duck season arrangements for nearly 40 years, but it only estimates from a proportion of the total population. A team of researchers fly in a fixedwing aircraft along ten survey bands stretching from central Queensland down to southern Victoria, counting over 50 species of waterbirds on up to 2,000 wetlands. The new helicopter survey is the largest and most comprehensive aerial survey of game ducks undertaken in Victoria and the first time that an accurate estimate of the total number of game ducks has been possible. Other surveys
have provided an index of abundance showing trends over time rather than a total estimate. The aerial survey was conducted in November 2020 as a pilot study to test the effectiveness of a new monitoring program design. An evaluation of the monitoring program, conducted by the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, has found that the aerial survey is an effective way of counting ducks – providing critical data to ensure that duck season arrangements remain sustainable. It is envisaged that this new monitoring program will inform adaptive harvest management – delivering on a key action in the Victorian Government’s Sustainable Hunting Action Plan. “We conducted public meetings, where in one instance we had and 130 attendees” said Lindsay. “A large amount of concern was directed to the fact that the authorities were allowing developments to be undertaken on low lying areas of land and putting conditions on developers with the requirement to raise floor levels and raising the levels of blocks to comply with the requirements to divert overland flooding around the new properties. One of the major concerns raised by all was that this had the potential to push water to other nearby properties that had previously not been affected by flooding.” As a result of pressure from this group, Council conducted a formal flood study in the area and consulted with the community. The Epsom Huntly Drainage Group had meetings with two Water Ministers and successfully obtained funding for furthering the study. This was at great cost to Council and other parties but a necessary one the group believed if development was to continue on mass in Huntly. Members found by ground checking that the LIDAR (light detection and ranging) reading employed prior by authorities in some cases was wrong and challenged these previous findings at Flood Group meetings only to be met with blank faces by authorities present. “Some of the issues we found were ignored by council and the NCCMA and we constantly had to get the previous minutes corrected to reflect the true decisions of the previous

meeting before we would agree to the confirmation of those minutes.” commented Lindsay. “Council conducted a resident questionnaire and the outcome was that 60odd percent of respondents stated that the creeks needed cleaning out.” “It was also pointed out that with an ever growing Bendigo, the intensity of the flows down the creek were changing and in some cases in the Epsom Huntly corridor there was only 600mm before the water overtopped the levee. One main concern emphasized constantly by the group was that the creek is about 5 metres higher than Station Street and the water levels a further 2 metres higher.” “The integrity of the Bendigo Creek levee bank was tested and it was found to be substandard and needed major works to bring it up to a required standard and concerns expressed that it would either overtop or breach. activities. Areas of this levee are also infested with rabbit burrows that will contribute to the integrity of the levee.” (see photo above) The group was concerned that with more intense flows down the creeks, that scouring of the creek bed was starting to affect creek banks in several places, trees falling in the creek further worsening the condition of the bank. “At the finish our group was reluctant to sign off and agree with the report and as a result we were told that it was a living document and it could be amended to correct any anomalies, this we did to the best of our ability.” “Water is being diverted from the supermarket and other areas in Epsom along the highway down Ironstone road then supposed to flow into the Bendigo Creek, however when the creek is in flood the drainage water cannot flow into the creek as the creek water is higher than the drain. CITY CALLS FOR INTEREST IN DISABILITY INCLUSION REFERENCE COMMITTEE The City of Greater Bendigo is calling for expressions of interest from members of the community who have a disability, care for someone who does or who work with people with disabilities to join its Disability Inclusion Reference Committee (DIRC). City Manager Community Partnerships Andie West
said the City established the DIRC in 2016 to provide advice to Council that supports greater social inclusion of people with disability. “The DIRC acts as a central point for City staff and Councillors when advice is sought on matters relating to the needs and requirements of people with disability,” Ms West said.
HE IS RISEN! Church News This statement is all about the victory of Jesus over death. He was crucified as an innocent man for spreading the Good News. He ministered to many people through healing and teaching . That hasn’t changed. He still teaches through the scriptures and He heals many from physical , emotional and spiritual wounds . This celebration of Easter tends to be rather worldly today. Having a great time is fine . But Easter is the celebration of Jesus rising from the dead after the ignominy of the Cross. He died for everyone so they too would be born again through Him and Holy Spirit power. If we realised the enormity of His sacrifice
of self , we discover it was done out of love for everybody . Nobody needs to miss out on the blessing . Oh! Yes! You have free will. That’s ok . But to turn away from Jesus; life can become a total disaster . God sent His son for us to know Him and become aware of the true victory over life’s challenges . People prepare for all types of eventualities by investing in various clothes and equipment . That’s wise . I suggest that leaving the essential and everlasting love of Jesus out of your life is poor management . Praying is the key. Ask Him to help. Ask Him into your life. Ask Him to heal you .... or even another person. He is listening . Ps Peter Pritchard.

“The Committee assists the City to consider access and inclusion when developing policies and strategies and undertaking projects, so it is an important role. “Committee members will be appointed for a two-year term and meetings will be held every two months. “Some preparation and reading will be required prior to meetings and at
times Committee members may be required to visit sites within Greater Bendigo to provide consultation and advice on City projects or major developments. “We are looking for people with disability, unpaid carers of people with disability, representatives from local disability-specific agencies, and representatives from local organisations or net-
works that have influence on social inclusion for people with disability to join the Committee. “Applications from people with diverse cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people of all ages and abilities, as well as past and outgoing members of the Committee are welcomed.”

Victoria has failed Indigenous Victorians in the 30 years since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was handed down. The Royal Commission recommended reform that would set our state on the path to better meet the needs of Indigenous Victorians and stop the overrepresentation in our criminal justice system. But in the past decade, the number of Indigenous

Applications close Friday April 23, 2021 and the expression of interest form is available at https:// www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/Services/Community-and-Care/ Disability-InclusionReference-Committee For more information please contact Nikki Williams on 5434 6000 or email n.williams@bendigo. vic.gov.au people in prison in Victoria has increased a staggering 148 per cent. Since 2010, the number of Aboriginal people in prison on remand has jumped 431 per cent. And the imprisonment rate of Aboriginal Victorians continues to outstrip that of non-Indigenous people in Victoria (1,848.0 per 100,000 in June 2020 (up from 707.6 in 2009), compared to 134.1 per 100,000 for the nonIndigenous population). Reducing incarceration rates of Indigenous Australians continues to be a priority on the national agenda, but Victoria is yet to make meaningful progress to address overrepresentation of adults and youths. It took six years in Government for Labor to commit a paltry amount of funding towards Closing the Gap initiatives. It’s up to the Andrews Labor Government to fulfil its responsibility to represent the best interests of all Victorians by implementing meaningful reform, including the recommendations from the Royal Commission. Any death in custody is one too many. Advancing reconciliation and self-determination of Aboriginal Victorians must continue to be an important part of healing past wrongs. We have the blueprint for reform that will change and save lives at our fingertips. The Victorian Liberal Nationals remain committed to working with the Indigenous community to achieve the Closing the Gap targets so Indigenous Victorians have the same opportunities as all Victorians.

Introducing Gaye Washington Throughout history, astrology has been deeply intertwined with religion and spirituality – because its concerns were often religious and spiritual. How do I live a good life? Why am I suffering? What do the gods want from me? And yes, a lot of people just wanted to know when they were going to fall in love, and leaders like Elizabeth I and Ronald Reagan just wanted to know when it was the best time to go harass the poor people again, but every major religion has at one time or another used astrology to
ease communication between earth and the heavens and show its followers where their free will collides with the vagaries of fate. Local Gaye Washington has been both practicing and teaching both astrology anf tarot reading now for decades. She has now become our resident guide to the stars and will be appearing regularly each week. For those wishing to know more or to book a private consultation with Gaye please ph 0407 057 254.

Cartof Hulzy Card Correspondent It is said. Those who never made mistakes never made anything. The most valuable and sought after Aussie footy card ever issued is in fact a mistake. Sniders & Abrahams Cigarettes introduced football cards in packs of Standard Cigarettes for the Australian market in the early 1900s. One of the first sets of VFL football card produced was ‘Australian Footballers Incidents In Play.” This set shows action pictures from actual VFL matches for the first time. Teams featured in this series include Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Saint Kilda, Essendon, Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne & Richmond. The original Geelong & Melbourne card showed players the from two teams with a scoreboard in the background. The card was originally incorrectly printed as Carlton & Geelong. The mistake was noticed fairly quickly and the title on these cards were re printed with the correct teams Geelong & Melbourne The corrected card has often been called the Error card. That was until some of the original error cards surfaced without the correction. It was thought none of the original error cards were inserted in

One of the few original error cards known to exist is kept by the AFL in their valuable VFL AFL collection of memorabilia. The error card was originally printed with the caption Carlton & Geelong, but it was noticed that according to the MCG scoreboard in the background and that the photo was actually a Geelong and Melbourne game. Before the full production print run, the card was amended to show the caption Geelong & Melb., The original Carlton caption can still be seen although scratched out.
