Organisers Optimistic Regards Easter Festival

Permit required to move street trees Council Reminds Residents Council News The City of Greater Bendigo would like to remind residents and landowners that they must not remove any nature strip or street trees without first obtaining the correct permission from the City. City of Greater Bendigo Manager Parks and Open Space Paul Gangell said street trees are important City assets and must not be removed, relocated or pruned by residents or landowners without a permit. “The City understands that sometimes trees need to be removed for various works to take place but this cannot take place unless the resident or landowner applies to the City for a Works Within a Road Reserve Permit,” Mr Gangell said. “The best course of action is to always contact the City first to discuss any issues they may have with their street trees or visit the City’s website www.bendigo.

The City is currently in discussions with a range of entertainment providers, food vendors, Rotary and the Showmen’s Guild to plan for the Bendigo Easter Festival. “I must stress that we are in the very early stages of preparations because we know that such an event will have to be carefully planned so the community is safe,” Mr Karamaloudis said. “We are working on various scenarios and seeking advice from the State Government on how we can deliver a COVID-safe Easter event. “Easter is such a special time

White Hills traders along Napier St are furious their pleas to both VicRoads and Jacinta Allan have been ignored. The argument is over the relocation of a bus-stop taking away what little parking they were left with after the recent Napier St re- development. Spokesperson for the group Chris Conroy said “After we requested an on-site meeting with local member Jacinta Allan we thought the project would be delayed while we submitted an alternative better and safer location for the bus stop but to our disappointment Jacinta did not meet with us and simply wrote to us saying the project would go ahead” “First months of closures and restriction of trade due to road works, then Covid now this.” The Napier St debacle comes on the back of another group of business owners furious with council over parking. The installation of parking metres and the re-design of footpaths along Lyttleton Tce.

has resulted in restricted access and disrupted trade and in the case of one business a total loss of internet when a cable was unearthed due to earthworks. “We only had just re-opened our doors said one owner and then bam! road works, why couldn’t council have completed this work when we were all shut due to Covid instead of waiting for when we re-open is a classic example of the disconnect and we don’t really care about small business agenda.” “We hear all the time that they are trying to re-invigorate the CBD, making people pay to park to get their fish and chips or run into a store to make a quick purchase is not my idea of how to help in attracting custom.” “It would seem Council not Councillors are simply out to collect as much revenue as possible from ratepayers to fund their grand plans such as employing more council staff and gastronomy, nice for some, they all get paid no matter what, I only wish they could spend a week or two in our shoes and they might not be so cavalier in their decision making.” Once again no consultation.

Societal recognition and increase awareness; be inclusive and equitable and strive towards the 2030 UN Agenda, as quoted by António Guterres, UN Secretary-General “When we secure the rights of people with disabilities, we move closer to achieving the

central promise of the 2030 Agenda – to leave no one behind”. Access Australia Group’s vision is ‘Employment for people living with disability or disadvantage’ supported by our purpose to ‘Provide meaningful participation, training and employment opportunities for people living with disability or disadvantage’. With three social enterprise divisions focussed on employment of people with disability; PepperGreen Farm, PepperGreen Farm Catering and Access Employment Enterprises; our social inclusion division Access Creative Studios who provide tailored supportive NDIS programs; a Disability Employment

service providing assistance to people with disability to achieve employment goals; and Access Skills Training (a registered training organisation) who have tailored training courses with additional support and funding for people with disability, AAG strive to make a difference to people with disability, their carers and family. Diane Finch, Manager of Employment Services stated “For AAG’s Disability Employment Services Team, it is about the employment consultants tailoring the service to each individual job-seekers needs. It is not a one size fits all, each jobseeker is supported by their employment consultant and

from a political and social institution that spends 95% of its budget on staff and administration. The thing is CEO, Craig Neimann, is not upfront about it , so ratepayers don’t really know what is happening with their money, other than a pretty picture and a glass token. It is a front for social change, like so many positions in the Health and Well Being directorate. Let’s be the first City in Australia that has a council that truly serves the people with a scoreboard to show it rather than seek outside recognition. Remember the Community Satisfaction Survey results show little warmth for council’s overall performance. I wonder how much staff time and money went into this? Enough money to pay for free CBD parking? It is all so transient and is like the Child friendly City applause etc. and oh so woke. Of course Bendigoneans have always been welcoming. It is a nonsense!

On behalf of The Nationals and the teams in our electoral offices I would like to wish each and everyone of you a safe and happy Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year. After all the demands of 2020 and its pandemic, we will all be looking for anything like a return to normality in 2021 and the first – and most important – steps in that are supporting local business and your local economy. That is how we can signal the rejuvenation of our regional and country sectors; get people back to work, give them some pride that they are contributing while celebrating how we coped with the pandemic. I congratulate you all on getting through 2020 and hope to catch up with as many of you as possible in the next 12 months. Once again Merry Xmas and a happy and safe new year.

Exploring death through art: a topic close to home in 2020 Latrobe University

A new exhibition at the La Trobe Art Institute in Bendigo will explore death and dying, at a time when many are experiencing complex feelings about the fragility of life. Running until 17 January, depending on Victorian Government advice, One foot on the ground, one foot in the water is the first exhibition the Institute has been able to hold since closing its doors in March due to the pandemic. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, installations and sound works by 11 contemporary artists that invoke experiences of loss, impermanence, transience, remembrance, memorialisation, and expressions of grief and loss. The artists are based in London, New Mexico and across four Australian states, Photo I AM Passing Through

including a remote Indigenous community in Western Australia. La Trobe Art Institute Director, Ms Bala Starr, said as the world continues to tackle a deadly pandemic, exploring the complexity of death and dying has never been more relevant. “As we read about deaths from COVID-19 around the world, the idea of our own mortality, and the process of grieving, is front of mind for many people,” Ms Starr said. “This powerful exhibition offers an environment of gentle calm for people to undertake quiet contemplation or discuss this very important topic,” Ms Starr said. The exhibition is complemented by a public program of events, including online panel discussions, virtual tours and film screenings.

The Kerang Lakes are a naturalist’s and photographer’s paradise, and in spring more than 100,000 birds flock to the area to nest. The most popular and rewarding viewing times are at sunset and sunrise when thousands of birds take flight. Be sure to include the camera and binoculars! Kangaroo Lake, Lake Charm and Lake Meran are popular water sports locations and great places for a day out fishing or a family picnic.

A unique and limited opportunity this spring and early summer has been created from environmental watering. The jewel of the Gunbower Forest is Reedy Lagoon, a special place for photography, waterbird watching, nesting turtles, the song of the frogs and a diverse range of aquatic vegetation.

In Cohuna, families can enjoy swimming and kayaking at ‘the beach’ at Apex Park which is only a short walk from the Cohuna Waterfront Holiday Park and the many shops and eateries in the main street. Factory and Field Waffles is a must visit, attracting visitors from afar with its great food, coffee and stunning gift shop.

The Long Paddock Food Store is a great place to stop for coffee and cake or a gourmet lunch before exploring Koondrook’s historic township, award-winning wharf and refurbished waterfront. A new accommodation experience is expected to open later this year in Koondrook and features six safari style glamping tents, complete with an ensuite, kitchenette and a private deck offering magnificent views of the creek and forest.

The Sandhurst Burial Ground or Sandhurst Graveyard as it was commonly referred to. David Mulqueen Bendingo Gallery

A

t present there are no known photos, illustrations or detailed maps of what the old Sandhurst Graveyard may have looked like. However there is a series of four photographs purchased by Jenny Bradley some thirty odd years ago that claim to be of the graveyard. It is difficult to prove with no other known photos to compare. The Burial Ground was opened in 1852 and by 1855 government legislation prevented it from further use. Its location was on the flat at the base of the Commissioners’ Camp, Camp Hill. Its main gate at the end of Cemetery Street off Bridge Street, a cairn at the back of the Chinese Museum next to Mulqueens now marks the old entrance. There are detailed records of the 219 occupants and some visual descriptions in various newspapers of the time. According to these records the first burial was in February 1852. William Binks a 23 month old son of James Binks and Ann Hodgson from Paddy’s Gully and the last, November 1854. At that stage the Back Creek (Carpenter Street) Cemetery was operating.

In the 1860s the people of Sandhurst used to dump their rubbish in the local tip - an area now known as the Conservatory Gardens, Pall Mall. When this location was targeted by the city for “beautification” and put off limits, residents simply continued over the creek and dumped it in the old abandoned graveyard. Numerous attempts to prevent this failed. There were other complaints also about the state and location of the graveyard mainly the fact that locals had to walk over the graves to get to sporting events at the sports ground. Eventually some of the bodies were exhumed and re-interred. A large retaining wall was then built along Cemetery Lane and 20 or 30 feet of soil was placed over the graveyard. The soil came from the foundation of the ‘Law Courts’ on Pall Mall and a leveling of the side of the Sports Centre hill near the Waters Street entrance. Record also show that there were 3 monuments removed and repositioned at other cemeteries when the occupants were relocated. But the records are vague and the monuments have inscriptions that do not verify this. If this photo (top right) is the Sandhurst Graveyard it is extremely rare but diffi-

cult to prove, on its own. If it is the graveyard then it was taken looking south towards what is now the fernery at the end of Park Road. The hill on the right leading to, what is now the old goal. The road in the centre a continuation of Cemetery Street and the foreground track Bridge Lane. Fortunately this photo was in a series of four. The second photo appears to be taken inside or near the cemetery looking east towards what, in early Bendigo history is referred to as the ‘first white hill’ - in more recent times the saleyards or what is now TAFE. On the side of the hill is a mine (circled) that becomes the focal point of the remaining photos. This photo also shows what appears to be the back of a church (just below the circled highlighted) making it the St Killians original stone church which opened in 1857. The third photo shows a closer view of the side of the hill taken from an area near what is now Hume and Iser’s. The mine’s location being in what is now Lansell Street, just in front of the East Bendigo pool. in what is now Lansell Street, just in front of the East Bendigo pool - the ruins of which are still visible to this day. Making the fourth pho-

to the Great Central Railway Mine on the Tyson Reef Sink-line (circled) The mine began operated in the late 1850s and the photographs show no preparations for the construction of the Melbourne - Murray Railway line, which commenced construction around that time and began operating in1862 indicating that the photos were taken in the late 1850s or very early 1860s if these presumptions are correct.

Andrews cuts IBAC funding

Shadow Special Minister of State, Kim Wells

The Andrews Labor Government has cut funding to the Independent Broad-based Anticorruption Commission (IBAC) and Parliamentary Committees in last weeks State Budget. With Daniel Andrews and Labor’s property developer donations and meetings

highlighting current IBAC investigations, and a new inquiry into three Andrews Government ministers and allegations of branch stacking within the Labor Party, the government has taken the axe to IBACs funding. In recent weeks IBAC has exposed entrenched corrupt conduct in Victoria’s public sector, IBAC has uncovered cavalier

activities that should worry all Victorians. Budget cuts that will constrain investigations are unacceptable. Is Daniel Andrews worried that an adequately resourced IBAC will uncover more activities that implicate his government? There is also an ongoing probe into the long-running CFA pay dispute that also includes an investigation into the relationship between

the Labor Government and the United Firefighters Union. Why doesn’t Daniel Andrews want to fund this important integrity agency. Last month IBAC warned a lack of funding from State Labor Government means it can’t probe all allegations of government misconduct and police integrity concerns. Commissioner Redlich has warned that IBAC will not be able to maintain current services and its capacity to expose and prevent corruption will be further curtailed and significantly impacted.” Just last sitting week, Daniel Andrews told Parliament: “IBAC will receive more funding than it has ever received before. That is the way it works. If that is a point of contention, well, people are free to have a different view. The government will make announcements on budget day about funding to integrity agencies and I boldly predict that they will receive a funding increase on what they received last year, and I would be surprised if that did not mean they receive more in this coming year than they have ever received beforehand.” Parliamentary Committees which are currently looking into Victoria’s COVID response, contact tracing, Management of Child Sex Offender Information and access to TAFE for learners with a disability has also been cut. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Budget Office and the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office has had no increase to their funding, despite also pleading with the Andrews Government for more funding to Victoria’s integrity agencies.

JESUS WAS BORN IN A STABLE. Ps Peter Pritchard. Southern Gatewat Christian Church As we roll into the Christmas season let’s all claim it as normal Christmas. Let’s not be bogged down in other terms defined by politics or systems . Jesus was sent into this world to set us free . He came for everyone to know His love , forgiveness and peace for ALL. Of course in our humanity we’re not perfect . Grace comes from heaven in continuous outpouring of love from Jesus . This year has been a battle on many fronts . However scripture tells us “ I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me”, “ I’m more than a conqueror”, “ I’ll never leave or forsake you”. Many more affirmations of the power we are given as Christians teach us to claim victory in Jesus name . Christians ,truly believing and receiving from Jesus, ought have no fear of any virus. This coming season can be, and should be , a time of reunion , celebration and joy. Yes. We can have parties and presents and great holidays. In reality it’s about the birth of Christ . The church many centuries ago declared Dec 25 as Christmas Day.

The actual day is irrelevant . It’s Christ’s birth that is the key to our lives. Nobody else lived a life such as He did on this Earth. The Birth of Christ is the trumpet sound of a new and everlasting life for all who believe . I invite those who don’t know Jesus in their hearts to ask Him bless them and their families . It’s not hard to do. You don’t need a special prayer . He’s always listening . He answers . Maybe not the way you expect . But, He will answer because He came to save us all. Often we hear stories of people who ask if there’s a god can he do something in a crisis . I can assure you there are countless testimonies of people who heard from Him and He came alongside them in their need. Scripture has many accounts of Godly blessings and rescues as people struggle forward in life . Jesus heals all who turn to Him. He promised He would and He did while he walked the Earth and then the victory of the Cross brings that awesome scripture ... “by His stripes we were healed”. He taught His disciples to lay hands on the sick and the possessed and they would be healed. It is still occurring today. This is the Jesus who was born in Bethlehem .

SOUTHERN GATEWAY CHRISTIAN CHURCH. “ with men this impossible Isaiah 54:7.. , but with God all things are possible.” “ But no weapon that is formed Matthew 19: 26.... against you shall prosper....” Sunday service at 10 am. Y Community Hall opp Aldi, Kangaroo Flat. All welcome in Jesus name. Enquires to Ps Peter Pritchard. 0413682999.

What is a demijohn In brewing, a carboy or demijohn is a glass or plastic vessel used in fermenting beverages such as wine, mead, cider, perry, and beer. ... Polypropylene carboys are also commonly used in laboratories to transfer purified water. The most common glass demijohn takes one gallon. That is 4.54 litres, or 8 pints, or the equivalent of 6 wine bottles. This makes them perfect for making a 6 bottle wine kit.

At first glance this appears to be just an attractive postcard featuring a thoroughbred horse from the 1920’s. Spearfelt won the 1926 Melbourne Cup and is one of many different racehorses in this series of photographic postcards. What is unusual is that it has a price of 1 shilling at the bottom right of the card, quite a princely sum for a postcard at the time.

These cards were offered by an sp bookmaker syndicate as part of a race tipping competition run in the 1920’s. The illegal betting scheme involved participants purchasing postcards for 1 shilling each, and receiving a coupon which entitled them to enter a race-tipping scheme, with points allotted for horses which won or ran a place in a series of six races. Prize money was paid out on these results and the gamblers could collect their winnings if they were lucky. If queried by police, the sp bookmakers and their staff were able to say that they were simply selling postcards and knew nothing about any gambling that may be taking place. The schemes were very popular and there were a few syndicates offering postcards with similar arrangements. The cards are fairly common today and are very appealing to postcard collectors. The red card is part of a series of cards included with Griffiths tea in

the early 1960’s. Tea leaf reading is an unusual subject for card collectors, but Griffiths did everything that they could to promote their tea. Most tea drinkers today use tea bags, which are not suitable for the joys of finding shapes in the residues left in the bottom of tea cups. It is suggested that a tea cup with a white bowl is best for examining the tea leaf remains after the unstrained tea has been drunk. I find it difficult to recognise the various shapes, but no doubt, a skilled reader can easily make sense of it. Leaves near the handle represent the person’s immediate surroundings, whereas those across from the handle represent outside influences. Tea drinkers are less common today so modern practitioners use other beverages such as hot chocolate, coffee or wine. The cards explain some of the shapes that you might find, but I never found a violin or a tree in my cup. David can be contacted at dlindsay5@protonmail.com
