Welcome to the Chinese Cultural Centre of Australia Experience a living history of the Chinese people in Bendigo from the goldrush of the 1850s to the present day at the Golden Dragon Museum. Victoria’s first accredited museum. In the 1890s an impressive Imperial dragon known as Loong was purchased from China by the local Chinese. He is now the oldest Imperial Chinese dragon in the world and is housed at the museum for viewing. The museum beautifully presents processional regalia, carved furniture and costumes embroidered with gold bullion thread. Artifacts date as far back as the Shang Dynasty 1600-1046BC. Located at the entrance to the museum and part of the Chinese precinct of Bendigo, are the Yi Yuan gardens, the Kuan Yin temple and the new Dai Gum San forecourt. Visit the museum’s website for festival and event dates.

the Body BeautiFul in ancient greece 2 AUGUST – 9 NOVEMBER 2014 The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece is a visually stunning and thoughtprovoking exploration of the human condition seen through ancient Greek eyes; with a particular focus on the human form. For over 2,000 years the Greeks experimented with representing the human body in works that range from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great. The ancient Greeks invented the modern idea of the human body in art as an object of sensory delight and as an expression of the intelligent mind. Selected from the British Museum’s world-famous Greek and Roman collection, this major international touring exhibition will give audiences the rare opportunity to see over 100 historical works including the impressive Discobolus; an iconic marble statue of a discus thrower from the second century AD.
Discobolus (discus-thrower), Roman copy of a bronze original of the 5th century BC. From Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Lazio, Italy. © The Trustees of the British Museum.

The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece is presented by the British Museum and Bendigo Art Gallery in collaboration and will be the third exclusive exhibition in the Bendigo International Collection series to be staged at Bendigo Art Gallery in August 2014. Currently touring venues in Europe, Asia and the Americas, Bendigo Art Gallery is pleased to be the first Australian venue to host The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece.

“Buon ricordo” is Italian for “good memories” and Life’s a Dish is very much the embodiment of a tradition that began in northern Italy in 1964. The Life’s a Dish concept is a simple yet beautiful one, giving food lovers the opportunity to purchase a unique hand-painted plate from Bendigo Pottery as a souvenir of a memorable, central Victorian dining experience. In conjunction with the Life’s a Dish program, each restaurant will offer a regular ‘plat de la saison’ (plate of the season) meal consisting of produce and ingredients sourced locally. Food Fossicking
There’s a focus in Bendigo on knowing and sharing the stories of where local produce has come from.
Food FOSSICKING A Food Fossickers network involves local people who are passionate about the important role food plays in a healthy functioning society. The group wants to inform people about where their food has come from, and to share the stories of those who put it on the table. Food Fossickers are keen to put a face to the local farmers, food and beverage growers, producers, distributors, retailers, cafés, pubs, restaurants, butchers, bakeries and more. A wander around Bendigo reveals that streets and laneways are bustling with things that foodies love to find. It’s an emerging scene that’s all about locally roasted coffee, locally grown produce, gelato, boutique beers, regional wines and gourmet flair.

Take the scenic half-hour drive to the small town of Heathcote. It’s a must-do for wine lovers, bush walkers and water babies. Heathcote’s seriously good Shiraz and other blends is thanks to its underbelly of ancient soil. Shiraz, and more Heathcote’s history began with vineyards established in the late 1850’s and 1860’s during the Gold Rush. However, vineyards had disappeared by the 1920’s and it was not until the late 1960’s that viticultural activity recommenced. Today, the Heathcote region spans approximately 100 kilometres from north to south and 40 kilometres from east to west, and is home to over 100 vineyards. Renowned for its complex, rich and elegant Shiraz, Heathcote also produces excellent wines from other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Marsanne and Viognier. This is intimate, grassroots winemaking; small producers handcrafting their wines; nurturing them from the vineyard to the bottle, and every step along the way. Just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, visiting Heathcote wineries will be a rewarding experience.

Big Hill once sorted the miners from the mice. Many chose to add days to their gruelling goldfields-bound journey just to avoid the infamous ascent. For braver souls, it made diggers out of dreamers. Today the rise above Bendigo is smooth sailing – but equally famous – as the downhill run to a city of riches. It plateaus into Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Maiden Gully and Marong.
