Be inspired to explore beautiful Bendigo 2

Dining & Shopping Guide

Walk, wonder and discover what’s behind the windows of Bendigo’s beautiful boutiques. What’s on the menus of high class cafes, restaurants and underbelly basement bars. What’s to be found within gorgeous galleries of art and antiques.

Discover a world of creativity. Of artisan-made products, bespoke treasures and the flavours of a city set deep within a rich food bowl. Bendigo’s mining legacy of wide, leafy streets and Europeaninspired architecture now houses an eclectic range of shopping and dining precincts… which will be your favourite? bendigotourism.com

Dining & Shopping Guide

Sidney Myer was onto something special when he opened the country’s first Myer department store in Bendigo in 1900. Jimmy Possum’s flagship store and Fernwood Fitness Centre carry on that entrepreneurial spirit.

Find on-trend fashion, handmade garments and fun vintage ware in Bendigo’s boutiques. Many local artisans encourage you to make your own treasure. How about a hand-bound book, a pottery piece or one-off softie?

Find the ultimate souvenir in a local gallery – jewellery, a painted silk scarf or a canvas from the hand of a local artisan. That handmade ethos continues for the foodies. Think sourdough bread, gelato infused with local flavours and Belgian chocolates being made daily.

Dining & Shopping Guide

Get dishy down darling little lanes, in heritage buildings and even below ground level. Enjoy fine dining and craft beer overlooking Alexandra Fountain, sample local wines from an old bank chamber or try authentic Thai under an ornate glass ceiling. If the weather is good enjoy all this and more alfresco.

Here you’ll find career baristas roasting and blending their own unique brews. The award-winning drops of local wineries, breweries and cider makers can be readily sampled in the restaurants and bars. And talk about newsworthy; look out for the Age Good Food Guide-recommended eateries.

Local chefs embrace the region’s earthy offerings through the Food Fossicking network of growers and makers – think Harcourt apples, free range pork from Heathcote, micro herbs from White Hills and olives and olive oils dripping with deliciousness.

Culture kick

Flavour hit

This creative and cultural hub has been likened to Melbourne’s laneways, however this place is pure Bendigo – a vibrant reflection of the creative business owners who characterise it.

While fine food and wine, boutique beer and waft of fresh coffee beans are the lure of the laneway, stay a little longer to indulge in beauty therapies or find a designer piece perfect for you.

Dining & Shopping Guide

Must do Art’s heart Paste ups by local artists pop from the red brick wall, alongside commissioned pieces by the likes of Yvonne George, who has set the creative scene with her Gaudi-inspired sculptural gateway.

• Admire the paste ups that line the redbrick walls of the laneway. • Choose from one of Bendigo’s best beer and wine lists at The Dispensary Enoteca. • Find emerging designer labels at Robe. • Start your journey of discovering Bendigo artists on the Artists Walk. bendigotourism.com

Mall adjustment

Big brands

Hargreaves Mall offers great shopping plus markets and festivals, concerts and kids’ entertainment. Leafy trees shade an architectural space of granite and blue stone. Just off the mall, quirky Allan’s Walk cuts through the historic mining exchange.

Bendigo is the birthplace of Myer and their store graces Hargreaves Mall with its international brands and high-end fashion. Many national chain stores also share the space, offering clothing, accessories, entertainment and home wares.

Dining & Shopping Guide

Must do

Family fun Grab a snack while the kids enjoy the playground – local children chose the dragon and christened him Fun Loong. The mall is also a drawcard for buskers and crafters who ‘yarn bomb’ the space.

• Discover cute and quirky indie gifts and art at bob boutique. • Head down Killians and Allans Walk to find more shops, unique to Bendigo. • Share a wood-fired pizza or try the steak at The Woodhouse Restaurant. • Find beautiful imported antiques at Valentines. • Experience culinary delights at an award winning pub. bendigotourism.com

English roses

Pall Mall is a gold rush living legacy. The best way to view it all is from a decorated vintage trams - ride the new Jimmy Possum, Blues Tram or the The Schaller Studio trams.

It’s easy to see the English inspiration in the precinct’s glass conservatory and formal public gardens. You’ll also find the namesakes of London in Pall Mall, Rosalind Park and Charing Cross.

Little treasures

Bendigo Art Gallery welcomes big name international exhibitions alongside the best of Australian art. Next door, The Capital Bendigo’s Performing Arts Centre, is likewise making a scene over it’s theatre, musical, family and comedy program.

The art, antique and design boutiques of View Street include cutting edge and vintage fashion, locally-made treasures, home wares and one-off vintage oddities. They’re all housed in a swoon-worthy ornate heritage shopping strip.

Dining & Shopping Guide

Must do

Food Fossicking

There’s a focus in Bendigo on knowing and sharing the stories of where local produce has come from. A dynamic Food Fossickers network involves local people who are passionate about the important role food plays in a healthy functioning society. It is a group that wants to let people know where their food has come from, and to share the stories about those who helped to put it on the table. The group is keen to put a face to the local farmers, food and beverage growers, producers, distributors, retailers, cafes, pubs, restaurants, butchers, bakeries and more.

A wander around Bendigo reveals that streets and laneways are bustling with things that foodies love to find. It’s an emerging scene that’s all about locally grown produce, locally roasted coffee, boutique beers, regional wines and gourmet flair.

Dining & Shopping Guide

Must Do • Discover the makers of some of Australia’ s most celebrated wines.

Art on show Local art and art-house films are celebrated in the galleries; beautiful spaces worth visiting in their own right. Come and meet the creative locals who help put a whole lot of heart into Heathcote.

• Dine at a European style cafe showcasing local and regional produce. • Fill a basket with fresh produce from the Heathcote Region Farmers’ Market, on the third Saturday of the month. • Plan your visit during one of the many Heathcote food, wine and art events. bendigotourism.com
