HOW TO GET TO BENDIGO
Bendigo is one of Victoria’s largest and most progressive regional municipalities with a population of almost 105,000 people.
Ideally located in Central Victoria, Bendigo is only 90 minutes from Melbourne Airport along the Calder Freeway and 90–120 minutes via V/Line trains from Southern Cross station. As a progressive and invigorated destination it is well serviced by excellent road, rail, bus and airport bus.
INNOVATIVE SPIRIT One of the world’s most spectacular gold rushes happened here in the mid-1800s. Magnificent buildings remain to shed light on these boom times, and today they are the perfect backdrop to a sophisticated way of life.
CONTEMPORARY LIFESTYLE Stroll the stunning streets of central Bendigo to unearth vibrant hubs where café culture, breath-taking architecture, the arts and boutique retail experiences meld together. CHINESE HERITAGE Home to Loong, the world’s oldest Imperial Chinese dragon and Sun Loong, the world’s longest. The annual Bendigo Easter Festival is Australia’s oldest continuous running festival.
EVENTS HUB Bendigo has a long history of hosting events that bring people from far and wide. With international and national events throughout the year, it has long been recognised as the place to be.

Once the richest place on the globe, with nine billion dollars worth of gold found between 1850 and 1900.

CHINESE INFLUX SHAPES HISTORY Many thousands of Chinese arrived in the mid-1800s to strike it rich, and within ten years they made up 20% of the Bendigo population. While many returned home when the rush ended, some remained to form the Bendigo Chinese community which continues to shape the city.
DIGGING DEEP FOR GOLD Gold undoubtedly put Bendigo on the map more than 150 years ago. Within a decade of the first discovery in 1851, many deep shafts were constructed to tap the rich gold-bearing quartz reefs deep beneath the surface. Many present day authentic attractions share the fascinating stories of this gold boom.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES • Prospect for gold in Bendigo’s nearby Whipstick Forest to find your fortune! • Take a Grand Building Tour of the historic Town Hall or Hotel Shamrock • Get a taste of gold fever on an underground mine adventure at Central Deborah Gold Mine
A GRAND PLAN As Bendigo’s wealth grew, so too did the visions for this new city. Founders set out to recreate London, giving Bendigo a distinctive European feel to this day. The arrival of fine public buildings transformed the landscape during the 1880s and 1890s.
• Meet Loong, the world’s oldest Imperial Dragon at the Golden Dragon Museum • Visit Bendigo’s Joss House Temple, one of the few remaining buildings of its type in Australia • Board a rattling Vintage Talking Tram Tour for fascinating hey-day stories

DARREN – BENDIGO WHOLEFOODS When you have a quirky shop that stocks thousands of products and supports over 90 regional producers, things become a bit of a juggling act. Rest assured, Daz is up to the task. Truly passionate about people, local and regional foods, he has had the idea of food fossicking in the back of his mind for some time. Daz, a proud Food Fossicker Ambassador, has loved watching the concept come to fruition.
FOOD FOSSICKING
There’s a focus in Bendigo on knowing and sharing the stories of where local produce has come from. A Food Fossickers network involves local people who are passionate about the important role food plays in a healthy functioning society. The group wants to inform people about where their food has come from, and to share the stories of those who put it on the table. Food Fossickers are keen to put a face to the local farmers, food and beverage growers,
producers, distributors, retailers, cafés, pubs, restaurants, butchers, bakeries and more. A wander around Bendigo reveals that streets and laneways are bustling with things that foodies love to find. It’s an emerging scene that’s all about locally roasted coffee, locally grown produce, gelato, boutique beers, regional wines and gourmet flair.
FOOD FOSSICKING MADE EASY! To simplify your food fossicking journey, we have developed a series of interactive maps based on region or category. Start food fossicking by picking up your copy of the Pocket Guide from the Bendigo Visitor Centre or www.foodfossickers.com.au
