Hargreaves Mall & Williamson Street Inspirational characters shaped this central precinct and their passion still lives on in today’s experience. Can Do Spirit One of Australia’s most successful retail stories began on these streets of Bendigo. Here, Sidney Myer wheeled his barrow of goods before setting up shop at the turn of last century. The department store still sits at the heart, with other great shops in the surrounds. You’ll find fashion, homewares and big brands to please the most savvy shopper. House to Home From fashionable homewares to rugs, furnishings and new appliances, you’ll be able 30
to create that cosy home environment from the options along Williamson Street. Specialty stores that understand that yearning for individuality are waiting for you to make a statement in your home! Welcoming Walkways Once you’ve explored the diversity of Hargreaves Mall and the new-look design highlighted by local granite, take a few detours as you wander along. Laneways and arcades branch in each direction opening other precincts for shopping and dining. 31

Mitchell Street If flavour, fashion and friends are top of mind, take the time to meander along this jam-packed shopping strip. Flavour Fantastic Gourmet delicatessens, homemade gelato, seasonal fruits and freshly brewed coffee all attract a strong following of foodie fans to this street. Food know-how is at its best with some of Bendigo’s experts delivering unsurpassed service and quality every time. Chinese Heritage One of Australia’s oldest Chinese restaurants sits on Mitchell Street. It was established when Bendigo’s gold rush attracted many thousands of Chinese, 48
bringing the Chinese population in Bendigo to 20 percent at its peak. Linking it all together Trams once rattled along this busy street taking shoppers and workers to town. It’s still a great place to start exploring Bendigo, being so close to the busy Bendigo Railway Station. Many of the other intriguing precincts branch off this main thoroughfare too!

Pall Mall & High Street This grand historic boulevard perfectly shows that buildings from another era can be a vibrant part of modern life. London Calling Pall Mall was named after the comparable one in London, perhaps to give a homely feel for the expats in the gold rush times! Rosalind Park sits to one side, a creek runs alongside, a tramline runs down the middle and the gorgeous Alexandra Fountain can’t be missed. A feeling of being in the motherland arises as you dine under the stars at one of the many diverse restaurants. Books Nooks There’s a bit of an unofficial book trail along this strip of 58
shops, with three or more to be explored right under your nose. While you are bookshop hopping be sure to detour into stores offering gifts, homewares and fashion. Famous for more than 15 minutes Lola Montez, Dame Nellie Melba and Lady Diana Spencer each famously visited the historic Hotel Shamrock. This grand old hotel with walls that we wish could speak, sits in pole position along Pall Mall.

View Street A bustling ambience with a passion for art, culture and vintage set the scene to this sophisticated hub. Art Abounds There are lots of reasons why this has become Bendigo’s thriving arts precinct. Be sure to peer into the Bendigo Art Gallery for the main reason! It is one of Australia’s best regional galleries, with the edge on contemporary Australian art and a track record for rolling out big international exhibitions. Set next door, The Capital – Bendigo’s Performing Arts Centre and other galleries add more reasons. Gold Rush Big profits came in the front door from the gold fields and 74
they came out as perfectly formed gold bullions. A row of historically significant gold smelter chimneys, used to melt the raw gold, still line the back of the buildings in this precinct. These bank buildings now form a haven of eclectic boutiques, wine bars and restaurants. Wine and Dine Wine buffs and foodies know that something is happening here. Wine bars and a hatted restaurant are just part of the mix. Add trendy cafes, restaurants and a local pub for a fully rounded experience after a day of rummaging. 75
