A prosperous gold rush past lives on in the vibrant culture of Bendigo today. Making History Two local women set Bendigo on its golden path when they found gold along the Bendigo Creek in 1851. Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Farrell, the wives of two workers on a pastoral property have their place in history. Approximately nine billion dollars worth of gold was found in Bendigo, making it one of the richest goldfields in history.
Golden
heritage
Chinese Traditions At one point the Chinese miners made up 20% of the Bendigo population. Chinese Joss Houses were built, market gardens dotted the landscape and Chinese sections were established at local cemeteries. Today the mining bonanza and the influx of multicultural groups can be experienced in the museums, grand architecture and tourist attractions.
Multicultural Past News of their discovery quickly spread, and within a few years tens of thousands of people came. It was one of Australia’s biggest immigration phases, with hopeful miners coming from places like Wales, England, America, Europe and China. Each brought their own traditions, that would go on to shape Bendigo to this day!
Must do: • Walk where miners worked, more than 60 metres underground at Central Deborah Gold Mine. • Take a Grand Building Tour of the historic Town Hall or Hotel Shamrock. • Visit our new Chinese precinct known as Dai Gum San, linking the Golden Dragon Museum and Chinese Gardens. • Meet the Oldest Imperial Dragon in the world, Loong at the Golden Dragon Museum. • Visit Bendigo’s Joss House Temple, one of the few remaining buildings of its type in Australia. • Trace your heritage from the goldrush era by visiting the Bendigo Public Library.

Historic Treasures With a rich gold mining history, there’s a wealth of stories and historically significant sites to see. Historic buildings like the courthouse have been refurbished and nearby Graytown offers evidence that the area once attracted thousands of diggers. Streets, building foundations and a cemetery remain from the former township.
Artisan Appeal Artists, craftspeople and a stunning crop of winemaking artisans now call the region home. An appreciation of great food, wine and art has enlivened the township with events, shops, cellar doors and studio galleries. The winemaking reputation is on the worldstage, adding to the buzz.

Heathcote’s history began with vineyards established in the late 1850’s and 1860’s during the Gold Rush. However, vineyards had disappeared by the 1920’s and it was not until the late 1960’s that viticultural activity recommenced. Today, the Heathcote region spans approximately 100 kilometres from north to south and 40 kilometres from east to west, and is home to over 100 vineyards. Renowned for its complex, rich and elegant Shiraz, Heathcote also produces excellent wines from other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Marsanne and Viognier. This is intimate, grassroots winemaking; small producers handcrafting their wines; nurturing them from the vineyard to the bottle, and every step along the way. Just 90 minutes north of Melbourne, visiting Heathcote wineries will be a rewarding experience.
