Mura delle Grazie, Genoa September-December 2018

RUBIK

The decision to intervene on the site of Mura delle Grazie is motivated by the intent to create a hybrid between the walls and the new multifunctional space, while maintaining and respecting the identity of the pre-existing context, in order to give more vitality to the active area and ensure flow through the public transport service (Metro stop). The multifunctional complex, in which it is possible to carry out various entertainment activities, offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, aimed at activities of public interest but also reserved for private events, making available revenues at every

fee. The structure was created starting from a regular geometric figure that, like a Rubik’s cube, was later modeled and broken down into blocks combined with each other. Walls have been added to provide shelter and privacy. The regular forms of the project contradict the adjacent structure of the square, which is in the form of intersecting circles for outdoor activities and relaxation area. Given the current lack of connection in the site, we intervened interposing ramps and paths between the square and the walls, also offering a viewpoint for panoramic views.

COLLAPS

The decision to intervene on the building is motivated by the intent to reaffirm the name of Rinascente. The organic body is installed in the preexisting building, as if to indicate an expansion of the space, which is modelled while maintaining and respecting the identity of the pre-existing context, in order to give more vitality to the area. The multifunctional complex, in which it is possible to carry out various entertainment activities, offers both public and private spaces, aimed at occasional or temporary events, aimed at activities of public

interest but also reserved for private events, making available appropriate revenue. The structure was created starting from an initial organic figure, inside which the “collapse” focuses us, understood both in structural terms (as the planes develop on fluid curves), that metaphorical (the fashion store that gives way to an exclusive school that bears his name). The fluid forms of the floors are contradictory to those of the original structure, in turn used to accommodate the secondary functions.

FASI DI GENERAZIONE DELLA CONFIGURAZIONE 1.GRIGLIA

2.MODELLAZIONE

3. SOTTRAZIONE

In the first phase of analysis of the project lot, located in Piazza Sarzano, the urban elements related to it were observed. In particular, they were considered relevant: the prospect of the church of San Salvatore, the flow of the route and the prevailing sound frequencies in the square. The prospect is a setting that gives the place a dramatic atmosphere; the flows differ in their course: there is a frantic path that avoids the square and another more calm that crosses it; sound waves are reflected on different materials reproducing different frequencies and rhythms. Following the reflections elaborated from the perceptions during the preliminary analysis, it

was decided to outline the project modeling, with the software Grasshopper, a forest of columns that is regulated through the attractor command. Starting from the flows themselves, the geometries of the cavea are delimited and, starting from the rhythms and frequencies most perceptible in the place, the columns that form the pavilion undergo variations in height and go to compose the rhythm of the project. It creates a forest governed by the rhythm in height and crossed in plan by several possible paths, which gather in two main corridors that push the observer to raise his gaze towards the facade of the church.

GREEN IN THE BOX

The internal garden is the beating heart of the project, around which are distributed, through the rationalist porch, all the utilities of the real estate unit, whose value is increased by two further interventions, the first of a technical nature, while the second compositional. At a technical level, the internal garden is lowered by a step, like the internal gardens of traditional Japanese houses, as if to recall the division that runs between the internal and external environment, which, although anthropized, remains wild. On a compositional level, winter gardens have been designed, which once opened supply the inner

courtyard with the air needed to survive the flora, along with a hydroponic system and appropriately designed HUV lighting. These are flanked by loggias hidden by vertical slats, which further distribute the living spaces. Finally, the internal distribution of the housing further emphasizes two aspects of the project, its matrix, the Roman urban Villa, and its search for unity of living spaces. The entrance of the lodgings, in the Peristylium, also generates an ideal space of vestibulum, while the opening accordion walls once opened, transforming the two distinct environments into a living agora.

GREEN BOULEVARD

Starting from the strong sense of sharing that the green boulevard, the backbone of the masterplan, were the foundations for the conceptual development of residential buildings that were born around. Just as for the boulevard, which embodies both an infrastructure and a multifaceted set of services, so the buildings that inhabit this neighborhood had to interconnect more uses, through pondering nuances of these. The proposed type of building was born as a parallelepiped to which volumes were removed from floor to floor, to form green terraces, inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon where to

graduare the co-habitation of users: while in the center there are large gardens shared only by the central apartments, larger and intended for family units that seek a greater social life with similar realities; the side courts instead, are designed to accommodate mainly workers and students. At the top of the building, there are 4 Deluxe apartments, for large family units, above which there is a home garden shared by the inhabitants of the building. The building communicates with the avenue through a large open entrance hall, with a series of public services but not exclusive.

The proposed design strategies aim to provide an effective response to the issues of conservation and enhancement of the area. These strategies look at the problem of conservation and reuse, with the awareness that only by giving the farm an active role in the functioning of the surrounding territory can an effective result be achieved. The aim is the attribution to the whole complex, a function that relates to the multiple characteristics of this, with a view to a light and reversible intervention that does not affect future study operations in the area, and preserve the landscape image that characterizes the ruin. The planned interventions on the site have

been proposed in accordance with the guidelines on which the 1972 Restoration Charter is based. In particular, the transactions identified follow these principles: 1. Additions recognisable by the use of differentiated materials; 2. Consolidation operations that maintain the appearance of the original article, in the colours and in the use of consistent materials; 3. Maintenance of the environmental conditions in which the article is located; 4. Operations permitting a future safeguard or restoration operation.

Villa Grimaldi, Genoa February-June 2021

“FORTEZZA”

The project on Villa Grimaldi starts from the fundamental idea of preserving and enhancing the historical features of the site. This approach will be possible only starting from a rediscovery of the architectural potential of the building, without altering its main characteristics. The villa currently has many interventions of recent times, in particular of the school period that have often hidden or damaged the original state of the villa. These additions will be removed, so you can start from as clean environments as possible. After several conservation interventions, we will proceed with interventions that aim to overcome architectural barriers. In line with the conservative

idea, all new realizations will be as discreet as possible, so as not to affect the structure of the villa. The villa will host different functions, so that it becomes a point of reference for the neighborhood and guests of different ages. For this reason, activities for children, entertainment spaces, areas used for laboratories and study areas, free access and reservation are available. These interventions will be made with lightweight materials, such as wood, and removable furniture if necessary. The new lighting systems will highlight the decorations of the villa and avoid damaging the walls, thanks to the use of lightweight supports or hooks.

Fundamentals and practices of representation

PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

PRODUCED BY ANwe AUTODESK VERSION The building on which haveSTUDENT concentrated our important work is the civic no. 5 of Via al Ponte Reale. The building, whose main access is in Via al Ponte Reale, has another façade facing the Loggia della Mercanzia, in Piazza Banchi. The facade shows its simplicity, plastered in a pastel color, enriched only by a band of smooth ashlar that covers the building up to the second floor. On the side overlooking Piazza Banchi there are four rows of holes that divide the facade in an

extremely regular way. The simplicity, the main feature of this building, is also reflected in the decorations and details. The railings themselves, in fact, are characterized by an essential wrought iron decoration, in linePRODUCED with the BY style of the facade. AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION On the ground floor, the building is characterized by a series of holes obtained from arches subsequently buffered and transformed into windows (currently, the ground floor of the building houses the headquarters of the bank Unicredit). “CISTERNA”

The construction site called “Cisterna”, in which I took part during the Workshop, concerned the re-installation of the wall, in anticipation of being used on public holidays, where the place is populated and comes back to life, as a support point. The challenge was to deal with the problem of the landslide that, during the rainy days, settles at the foot of the wall making it inaccessible and impassable; in addition to this it had to be cleaned of muddy soil and pest vegetation. The solution put in place was to create a channel for the disposal of rainwater from two points of

History of science and construction techniques

the hill and convergent at the entrance to the area. These waters will flow, when completed, under the lintel present at the entrance, along the wall and will emerge from an opening in the wall itself created to the south. The parts of the wall that were in good condition, were freed from the weed vegetation and once the movable stones were removed, other layers were reconstructed to obtain a flat and level surface; A step has also been taken to facilitate user interaction across the wall.
