Working mothers do NOT harm their children

There is a clear view among some who feel that mothers who don’t work are best for their children. Now, is that true? Is it true that mothers who don’t work are the only ones who are best suited to take care of their children?

All about X, Y & Z

An earthquake in the lives of ordinary people By Adarsh Madhavan Something wrong somewhere… Of course, it is not something that many would like to hear. But, don’t you think that there is something in the air? Something so wrong… Don’t you feel that something is amiss? Everywhere we go, there are people in some kind of trouble; financial trouble, work-related trouble; healthrelated trouble; personal trouble; legal trouble…trouble, problems, stress, pain and suffering. Everywhere we turn, we confront those in some kind of mess. Out of 10 people we meet, the majority of them are in some kind of a spot. They all seem to be disturbed in some way or the other. They all seem to have got into some kind of trouble; all seem to be suppressing some kind of pain, and we see that in flashes of their unusual bad behaviour; flashes of sudden anger over non issues. What is happening to you folks? We see trouble brewing from all quarters for many and there is an element of frustration, a sense of hopelessness and we see people viewing each other rather suspiciously. People are ready to take to arms against their own friends, their own brethren. Some want to go legal over small issues; a sense of rank intolerance seems to have swept over many and right from the day the year began, we are hearing this. Annus Horribilis Is 2015 the year of conflicts? A new Annus Horribilis?! For we have been hearing of problems from the beginning of the year itself. Right from the start. As though the year rose with a bang of problems for the world; as though 2015 pushed itself out and dragged along with it some horrible problems from the dungeons of the earth. Or like someone did the hex on 2015 and cursed it to be a dark year for people. And there are also indications that conflicts are on the rise. We have ourselves been at the wrong hands of fate. First, when the avalanche of problems hit us, we thought we were the only ones who were targeted; like we were

the only ones who were dogged by ill luck. Then when we went around, we found ourselves hearing stories of problems faced by friends as well as strangers. Stories of losses, personal and otherwise… People who lost their near and dear ones; irreparable losses, and those who suddenly found themselves with the pink slips; those whose relationships went kaput, those who were tripped down by the stray limbs of fate. It was like a plague of problems had hit town. It was like all this while someone had swept these problems under the carpet and someone has now suddenly removed the carpet. We don’t know, we said to ourselves. We don’t know how we are going to write about this. Is this a story to write about? That almost everyone whom we knew and whom we were getting in touch with were in some difficulty or the other. Their friendly smiles hid a tear; their light banter had a heavy undertone of pain; their usual warmth was sliding dangerously over icy dungeons of pain and confusion. Let it end There IS something wrong. Of course, the terrifying earthquake and sheer loss of life in Nepal is a clear indication that there is something wrong. But, what we would like to highlight here is that it is not just in Nepal. It is not just wars and the fighting worldover. There is an earthquake happening in the lives of ordinary people. There is war between perfectly calm and peace-loving folks. There is anger and jealousy resulting in violence and we see a general disregard of all that is good and a dismissal of compassion and empathy. It is as if people don’t care whether others live or exist. They were undergoing some kind of personal turmoil and were facing tremendous pressure to live and so they really did not care if their own flesh and blood lived or not. There seems to be no patience, no compassion, no understanding…just a kind of muted savagery that is waiting to explode. Honestly, can’t wait for this year to end! editor@blackandwhiteoman.com 5

Missed Boney M show Black & White gave me one of the biggest surprises and one of the best gifts in its last issue (issue 74). You must be wondering what it is? Boney M! Sadly, I was not in town when Boney M had their live show here. It was a real pity! I love Boney M and even in my wildest dreams I did not expect them to come to Muscat. While I thank the organisers (Black & White magazine) for bringing this famed band to town, I have a big grouse to settle with you: why did you not inform me personally?! No, I am joking. But, I really can’t bear the fact that they were right here in town and I could not hear them, see them or get close to them. I also learnt that they had played all my favourite numbers. I envy all of you had a chance to be with the famous Boney M. Jaleel P. K, Seeb

Took my breath away Black & White! Hats off to you for hosting one of the most popular disco bands of the 70’s/80’s! It was such a marvellous surprise to see the original band member, Maizie Williams, in life and blood. Few will understand the significance of her presence. She is such a legend and to have her before you and in fact dancing before you (she came and rocked right in front of us and actually got into the crowd), was such a fantastic feeling. I mean it was so amazing; it took my breath away! And I feel the Boney M team, fronted by Maizie, had such 6

an element of warmth that was glowing from them. It was not just their beautiful music, but it was also their warmth that bowled over the packed audience at the Oman Automobile Association grounds. Great, and unforgettable show! Angie De Raniers, Al Khuwair

Waiting for the canine resort Early, this January, we planned to go on a quick vacation to India but then we were in a big muddle over Spotty, our little Pomeranian bundle of fun. We couldn’t take her with us and we had no clue as to what to do. My daughter literally refused to come and we were in a real quandary. I was really flustered and we almost cancelled the trip but thanks to one of my friends, who came like a real angel to help us in our time of distress, we would have really cancelled our trip. So, your story, ‘Who let the Dogs Inn’? (issue 74) clearly resonates with me. I was one of those who are affected every year because I have a pet and do not know where to keep her when my family and I go on vacation. Hope Alfa and her team will bring out her canine resort be ready before my next vacation. Rajesh Prasad, Muscat

Let it be affordable I read the article on the five-star canine resort in Rumais with great interest. While I appreciate the efforts of the Canadian Jebel team to bring out such a resort, I really hope they keep it at an affordable level. Amitpal Singh, Ruwi

Reciprocate doggy love Kudos to Alfa Vold and all her dedicated team members at Canadian Jebel. They have always been on the forefront of such exciting canine-related activities in Oman and now by making this one big dream of making a full-fledged fivestar canine resort in Rumais, they are really hitting big time.

Also, one must understand that dogs are our best friends and it is time that we do something big for them. We should be able to reciprocate at least in this way for all the good times we have had with them and are going to have with them. James Mathew P, Qurum

What about a shelter for strays? I am all for more facilities for the dogs in town and I do appreciate the efforts of the people behind the plan to have a canine resort in town. But, I really wish someone would think of a shelter for the stray dogs in town. The stray population are the ones that I and many like me are really worried about. These beautiful animals come on this planet because of no fault of their own and then they live a horrible life of suffering. I am not complaining or trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but I sincerely feel that more efforts should be made to help the stray population survive. They all live in such harrowing conditions and in sheer fear and pain. Why can’t we think of at least a shelter for them, if not a resort? Avinash K., Muscat

BOTOX T

Men read

oday, you don’t have to teach men to look good. In fact, they know where to look and what to do to look good. And they are not afraid to seek non-surgical solutions to facial creases, lines and wrinkles. Ever since its introduction as a minimally invasive aesthetic procedure, Botox has been known to be a women’s go-to secret for correcting annoying expression lines on their faces. Now, there’s a new trend in town where men are now using “Brotox”, which is Botox for men, to cheat age and advance their looks in hopes of advancing within their careers as well as social circles. As the number of men opting for Botox sky-rockets, men in our neighbouring countries are also catching up on the trend. While not much is known about the scene in Oman, the winds of change are definitely sweeping into this area. According to Dr Alexandre Dionyssopoulos, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery as well as a professor in cosmetic surgery, men going for Botox is not a new thing, but surely the numbers are increasing. “Of the top non-invasive cosmetic procedures, Botox takes the prize among men,” states Dr Alex, adding that 20 to 25 percent of his Botox clients are men. “Most of the men who come for Botox have always one thing in mind, which is to look a few years younger by drastically reducing the wrinkles on their faces.” Looking at statistics from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), Botulinum Toxin, (including BOTOX, Dysport and Xeomin) was ranked the most popular procedure overall in 2013 alone with a total of 5,145,189 procedures amongst which 643,675 were men. As for the reasons why men are now very willing to have Botox, it all comes down to their careers; at least for most of them. Says Dr Alexandre: “When you look at the workplace, older guys in their mid-30s and 40s are forced to compete with younger and fresher guys. And while some are confident about their jobs, for others it might not be so, and would like to have their lunch with a side of Botox to improve their looks.” Professor Alexandre’s statement may not be far from the truth if a 2014 Harvard University study is to be believed. In part, the study states that “Good looks help you get

8

ahead in business (if you’re a man) and that investors were more likely to put money into ventures if the man making the pitch is handsome.” This statement alone says all that needs to be said when it comes to men and looks where success is concerned. The plastic surgeon notes that it is an easy sacrifice with a great outcome. “One needs only two sessions within one year, with each session taking 10 to 15 minutes and the usual minimal bruising,” he explains. In addition, he notes, Botox makes the face look relaxed and shaves off a few years hence making it an added ammunition to having a very successful career. On the other hand, Brotox has been around for ages, so why is it becoming very popular now? According to Dr Alexandre, the world is changing. “People are becoming more open minded towards aesthetic medicine, than they were a while back in the day,” he says adding that human vanity is the reason behind all this. Although, according to Dr Alex, there is another crucial use for Botox in addition to removing a bit of wrinkles and making the face look fresh and relaxed, which can also help ones career. “When the male clientele come to get work done on their faces, they always have no clue that the same Botox can be used to treat hyperhidrosis, which is another word for excessive sweating. Many are surprised by this and some who suffer from the condition end up asking for additional injections to keep the sweat at bay, which always works,” says the doctor. “All in all, doing a little work here and there to your looks in order to advance your career or gain a little bit of more self-confidence is a good thing. And to make it even better, only a man who has done Botox on their faces will recognise another Botox user. So if one is afraid that people will notice, it’s time to relax because if one notices, both of you might just end up bonding at the plastic surgeon’s office while getting your next shots of the toxin.” (Credits: Dubai Cosmetic Surgery clinic)

Inches away from a

BURNOUT… what to do? John had tried everything. Meditating, or ‘Oming’ as he called it; running on the roads like his back was on fire; going to yoga classes… but his mind was set on a muddled path. He had no clue how to handle his stress-related work; his handful of children and his ever-demanding wife...he wanted to escape and he wanted to run away.

He was inches away from a breakdown or a burnout, which ever would come first. He realised that this big talk about work-life balance was just that – mere talk. He was not getting anywhere with mediation, yoga, or simply switching off. Of course, there were good in their own way, but it seemed the more he did them, the more he was forced to do it, primarily because the stress levels after these sessions remained the same. When he was meditating and doing yoga or running, he felt okay, but when he got back into the scenes of stress, he felt all the wretchedness of being even more acutely.

Men read

It was then he realised that there was no running away from all of the problems he was encountering; he

had to face them and try to find a solution within the problems, not let go and run away. The only way, John realised, was to embrace and yes, enjoy the challenges of everyday life instead of attempting to escape it. He posed these thoughts to an expert who suggested that he: WORK HARDER THAN BEFORE Go headlong into your problems at work, the expert suggested. There is no work that does not have pressure. It is part of life and work and while a degree of it helps keep ourselves stimulated and engaged, it would also help us to enhance our performances. Try to just push yourself and involve yourself a bit more than usual and then see how it works out.

HAVE YOUR TRIED WORK-LIFE INTEGRATION? Today most men might find it difficult to follow the triple eight (8-8-8) model of sleeping for eight hours, working for eight hours and engaging in leisure for the next eight hours. Sometimes, says the expert, one may find hardly any time to sleep because you are so engaged in the work. While some may find it exciting to be working in such a manner, others may not find it as exciting. For the latter, there is always a need to inject some excitement on their work front. To keep burnout at bay, such men can take leisure breaks, but should include quite a lot of thought stimulation and also indulge in a genuine exercise of writing down their dreams; they should look at what they want out of life, where they want to go; what they want to achieve and how they want to live. CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE One of the biggest move in the direction of success in anything is to change one’s perspective. Most of us have a great need to dust the

cobwebs of our minds and spring clean our vision. We have got to do things that inspire us. We need to read books and view movies that take us out of our self-imposed slumber and awaken our inner senses. That old mental and emotional outlook which has been dragging us down has to be changed at one swipe. We have to see the bigger picture and pile ourselves with rich interests and richer imagination. TICKLE YOURSELF INTO GOOD HUMOUR Yes, there is a great need to selftickle ourselves into good humour. A little laughter goes a long way in life. Not taking it all too seriously and being able to crack a smile when the going gets tough is itself a major move to a newer life perspective. We have all got to die one day, so what is the big deal of have a sour and dour view of life? Laughing activates our stress relief response, soothes tension and improves our mood and immune system.

When things fall apart… Recently, a Facebook post caught my eye. Someone we knew had re-posted a popular quote and as I read through it, I slowly tried my defeat-hardened mind to believe it. “When things fall apart, consider the possibility that life knocked it down on purpose. Not to bully you, or to punish you, but to prompt you to build something that better suits your personality and your purpose. Sometimes things fall apart so better things can fall together…” Yes, things are falling apart. Rather, they have been falling apart since sometime now and as I ruminate over this, I see my well-crafted plans, my hopes and my desires tumble down like a house of cards. Unusually bad things kept happening to me and also to those around me without any rhyme or reason. Have you ever stumbled into a nightmare? No? Unless you take that leap of ‘fate’ with me, you will not understand.

Off the wall

Things were and are falling apart. So, did it mean that it was happening because life feels that I should be taught a lesson? Was it because of the mistakes that I have made? To err is human, and so if I have erred, shouldn’t I be forgiven for the same? Why should I be punished for my errors? Or was it because these mistakes that I have made are actually sins that I have committed? For, I know there are so many people who make errors…are they all punished for their mistakes? I don’t know. My good friends say it must be my karmas. I have done bad karmas and I was suffering for that. I don’t know, I tell them. I haven’t killed anyone. I haven’t harmed anyone; I haven’t hurt anyone (at least not knowingly). I haven’t stolen anything from anyone. I have not cheated anyone. I haven’t fought or beaten up anyone. If I did have a verbal spat with someone, even those moments of anger are ephemeral and like anything that heats up, I cool down too. I avoid confrontation to the point that people think I am a coward. And even I think of myself the same way. The mere thought of confrontation, makes me sweat. My astrologer says that it is bad time (oh as though I did not know it) for me and that if I do certain rituals, things will get better. I do them. I break coconuts. I bow my head to the ultimate power. I cry. I wail. I scream. But nothing happens. Why don’t you pray with all your might, things will change for the better, other soothsayers suggest. Like I have just told you, there is not a moment that I am not 14

praying. But things don’t get better. It gets worse. Yet, I pray, I pray with all my might but things get from bad to worse. If things are falling apart and it is not to bully me or punish me, then why are they falling apart? Look at how lovingly and tenderly we have nurtured our lives; how painstakingly we have charted our ways; how hard we have built our careers yet, like someone has pulled out the fuse, our brightness crash into inky darkness. What bills have I not paid? Now, now, I don’t mean it literally because everyone out there would suddenly knock at my door with a huge list pointing out to the fact that I owe them money since several months. Please don’t react, that was just a metaphor cascading down my throat and I am not in anyway inviting any wrath. If all things are going to fall apart, then what am I going to do? Hold on, be brave! Things will be better, they say. And I sink under an avalanche of clichés like when things get tough, the tough should get going; tough times do not last, tough people do…etc ad nauseum! I guess I am neither tough, nor brave. I am like a mould and unfortunately, fear has moulded me into being a straw man; a puppet that mimics cowardice. If things fall apart to prompt me to build something new, then what is it that I have to build? Things have fallen apart and have made me into a weakling, a lesser human being… For me things have not only fallen apart, I really doubt whether better things can fall together. Sometimes, these beautiful phrases are just that – beautiful and phrases. But, they don’t feed you and they certainly don’t pay your bills or loans! adarsh@blackandwhiteoman.com

More power to women in GCC Women in the GCC countries have broken through the glass ceiling and have established their credentials in traditionally male-dominated disciplines. According to a report released by Al Masah Capital they are impacting positively on the social, political, cultural, and economic aspects of their respective societies. Although women constitute a lower percentage of the population they have a higher enrolment rate in higher education than men. The report underscores the need, however, for women to have a commensurate participation in the workforce where it is still at a relatively low level. “Women have a higher literacy rate,” says Shailesh Dash, Ceo of Al Masah Capital. “But we are seeing them become a driving force contrary to the prevailing image." According to the World Bank, the GCC’s literacy rate is 93 per cent, at par or even higher than other developing countries across the world. The literacy rate was an estimated 87 per cent a decade ago. Within the GCC, literacy rates are high in countries such as Qatar (97 per cent), Kuwait (96 per cent), Bahrain (95 per cent) and Saudi Arabia (94 per cent). Oman, with a literacy rate of 87 per cent, ranks the lowest among GCC countries. Al Masah’s conclusions indicate women are competitively positioned against their male colleagues on parameters such as working hours, training and development, recruitment and selection and benefits. While the private sector accounts for 80 percent of the

total women employment in the GCC, Arab women have made their presence felt in government, management, and family businesses. It speaks for their capabilities that on the Forbes list of most powerful Arab women in the Middle East, the GCC constituted more than 50 percent in all major categories. Dash lauds the forward thinking attitude of the governments and their enlightened approach to women and specialised education. “This is the key to the arrival of women on the scene,” he says, adding that it is because women have been empowered that the region is seeing a new dimension of talent across the board.” Furthermore, most GCC countries have ratified the UN convention on the elimination of discrimination against women. These initiatives have all contributed to women holding command positions. One of the conscious decisions women are making is to marry later and obtain a degree and pursue a career. As a result they are also becoming wealthier. As per a study, women in the Middle East controlled over a third of the wealth in the region.

Make mine moolah By Bikram Vohra

Bikram Vohra, internationallyknown Gulf based scribe

Since I have spent most of my life trying to get my two ends to speak to each other I have not invested in a house, acres of land or the market, the last only to buy fruit and vegetables. The only stocks I know are melted into soup and I am one of those people who stand at parties and nod violently when people talk of volatile markets without a clue as to what they are talking about. Somebody once advised me to invest in an aggressive fund so I said I was a pacifist and nobody laughed. In fact I was a mature adult when I realised that Footsie was not an option for flirting in the back rows of the movies but a monetary index. And if I had been asked what a debenture was I’d have thought it was linked to dental treatment. People are always telling me to go into property or convert into yen and it is deuced embarrassing to have to explain that much as you would like to go into Euros, dollars and dirhams, your fuel tank is on fumes and if you do see a light at the end of a tunnel it is probably the fiscal express thundering down. And if they are not doing that they are discussing bullish and bearish situations and I still do not know which is which. People who have money worry about making more money and who is cheating them. They worry about the market fluctuating. I couldn’t care less if the market does the Michael Jackson moon dance. The wealthy have a hard life. People who don’t have money get excited if they find a Rs 500 note in an old coat. All us men have a special squirrel away place where we hidemoney from our wives. It is a normal practice in a good marriage. I put ten notes of a thousand each into the lining of my coat as insurance for a possible crisis and my wife did that spring-cleaning act wives do without warning and part of it is attacking your favourite clothes and there went the coat and somewhere out there is a man wearing a brown tweed with elbow patches and he doesn’t know there is that money under the right-hand pocket. I have been on the look-out for him for over a year. Now that winter has disappeared I’ll have to wait till next year.

Sunny side up

The wealthy discuss tangible assets and occasionally you are in their company. Your assets being one old plasma TV, a crummy desktop with Windows' 95, one sinking sofa and a music system that occasionally gets stuck and it’s tough to compete with someone who has just bought a cute little villa on the Costa del Sol or invested in Cyprus. I haven’t invested in our garden. But there is one advantage to not being filthy rich. You have nothing to lose. 22

In Black... The nation was silently praying and waiting to see our beloved leader back amongst us. And when he did, we went berserk with joy and happiness. We thank almighty Allah for protecting His Majesty and bringing him back safely to Oman Mohamed Issa Al Zadjali Chairman HIS MAJESTY RETURNS March 23, 2015 What did I feel when the news broke about the return of our beloved ruler? Well, for me, it was like the 1970’s all over again. It felt like the beginning. I felt thrown back into those days when suddenly darkness turned to light, when despair and despondency was replaced with hope and happiness, when the deathly silence exploded into joy and ecstasy. Yes, without exaggeration, it was like the 1970s all over again, when our beloved ruler took over the reins of Oman, and then steered it to prosperity and drove it to a new era of renaissance. And when His Majesty the Sultan returned on March 23 this year, the nation exploded into joyous celebration. The jubilation of the nation knew no bounds. And for me and everyone in Oman it was almost a replica of yet another home coming, ushering in and promising the nation and its people that we are back in the safety mode and that all our doubts could be laid to rest and we have once again enough reasons to cheer. The presence of His Majesty the Sultan promises us change and growth. His majesty had led the country to four decades of abundance and prosperity, almost in all fields. He led us to a path of hard work, dedication and commitment. Oman saw its glory and growth under his wise leadership.

IN OUR HANDS When he was not amongst us, we felt a great emptiness as though something of great significance was taken away from us and we felt the same glee when it was restored back to us. The nation was silently praying and waiting to see our beloved leader back amongst us. And when he did, we went berserk with joy and happiness. We thank almighty Allah for protecting His Majesty and bringing him back safely to Oman. It is indeed in the hands of every citizen and resident to keep up the momentum and continue positively in the path of growth and progress, by working together without allowing any sort of insecurity into our nation. The path has been preset and our governmental authorities should take up the responsibility to continue the developmental process for the goodness of the nation. May 23! Let it be a date etched forever in the hearts of every Omani! God bless our beloved leader!

March 23 – Royal Homecoming

April 2015

Black & White

There is nothing that the people of this country or its residents will not do for their beloved leader. That is evident from the recent outpouring of the love and affection that was witnessed on the day the news, which everyone in Oman was so impatiently waiting for, was announced: the welcome announcement that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the beloved leader of Oman, was back in the country!

GLAD TIDINGS Upon hearing the glad tidings, the nation exploded in unbridled joy. It was almost like Oman was celebrating yet another renaissance. It was like a spark that lit up everyone’s hearts with ecstasy! It was like getting released from suspended animation. Oman collectively heaved a sigh of relief first and then the country rose in a chorus of immeasurable joy. People from all walks of life, nationals as well residents, simply went on a joyous spree. And that joy still remains undiluted even today. People were laughing, crying, they were singing, they were dancing, some of them sang the national anthem; others sang songs of victory. Some took their guns and shot into the air, in a clear defiance of whatever fate, which had held them captive as they all silently and patiently waited for the moment. And when the moment came, they did not bother to wait any longer. The return of His Majesty the Sultan from Germany after eight months of successful medical treatment suddenly turned Oman from sombre silence to almost triumphant glee. As the news spread, people just poured out into the streets like as though a dam had burst. A sea of people flooded the streets everywhere. After nearly 258 days, the Sultanate was back in its element. And well, it was worth the eight months wait. But more importantly, the emotional response to His Majesty’s return to Oman was also indicative of the sheer love of the people of Oman for a leader who has done so much for them and in their hearts they knew they could not thank him enough. A BRAND NEW DATE TO CELEBRATE This nationwide jubilation was quite special and it marked yet one more milestone that the country was going to celebrate from now on. One more date has been added to the list that will now witness celebrations on the national level. From July 23 to November 18 to now March 23. A brand new date has been etched into the consciousness of the people of this country. And when the news broke, some left their jobs and rushed home to switch on their television sets. Oman TV showed His Majesty the Sultan arriving at the airport. This was followed by video clips of His Majesty, which clearly caught the attention of the nation! The news was confirmed by the Diwan of Royal Court, which issued a statement, saying, “Encompassed by Allah’s care, His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said returned

to the dear homeland enjoying full health and well-being after His Majesty’s successful completion of the medical programme in the Federal Republic of Germany, thanks be to Allah. “On this overwhelming and happy occasion, the Diwan of Royal Court raises its utmost greetings to His Majesty and the loyal subjects of Oman, coupled with appealing to Allah to always safeguard His Majesty, maintain him a supporter and source of pride for Oman and its kind people, provide him with victory to continue the comprehensive development march witnessed by our dear nation under the wise leadership of His Majesty.” Even the official responses of the return of His Majesty were filled with exultation. A hint of that can be deciphered from the expression of joy from one of the top authorities in Oman. His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said, deputy prime minister for the council of ministers, said, “We are blessed that His Majesty has returned to Oman. There are no words to describe our feelings. The joy the citizens are feeling reflects the love they have for their leader.” NATIONWIDE JUBILATION On the streets and homes of Omanis, people did not know whether to sing, dance or just shout out from the rooftops their joy and happiness of this royal homecoming. Their beloved leader was back and nothing more mattered to them. News reports after March 23rd were replete with stories of how jubilation gripped the entire country and the outpouring of happiness saw folks of all sizes and shapes dancing out in the open. The country did not sleep that night. Special prayers were performed in some of the mosques in Oman as the faithful prayed to the Almighty and thanked Him for the safe return of their great leader. There was a riot of colour on the streets as the traditional celebratory colours of red, white and green decked by ecstatic people went around the streets of Oman. Yes, when people and vehicles thronged the streets, there were traffic congestions and the like but it was one night when no one bothered whether they were stuck in traffic or whether drivers honked or the cars blared with the national anthem or songs in praise of His Majesty. It was a night to remember for many. And it was a day that will be forever inscribed in the minds and hearts of everyone in Oman. 2727

Black & White also went about asking key people in town on how they expressed their joy upon hearing the news that His Majesty, the Sultan, was back. We asked some of them what was that special thing that they did to celebrate His Majesty the Sultan’s return from Germany on March 23rd? Did they do anything special or out of the way to celebrate the homecoming of Oman’s most beloved leader?

B&W Xclusive

YES, OF COURSE THEY DID! Some celebrated individually or with their families, other establishments transformed their strict corporate offices to celebratory halls. They all united to celebrate in forms and expressions they knew best. Some sang and danced; some prayed; some planned special events; some even organised sports events, matches as celebrations to commemorate the royal return. And yes, many quietly celebrated, their hearts awash with relief and sense of gratitude to the Almighty for returning their leader back to Oman, safe and sound.

Some, like Khalil bin Abdullah Al Khonji, former president of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), spoke his heart out to Black & White:

“Your Majesty, Sultan Qaboos bin Said, may God Almighty bless and protect you and give you a long and happy life. “We thank Almighty God and praise be to Him for giving Your Majesty the grace of health and wellness. Our hearts rejoice that he has brought you safe and sound back to your people and country. We ask the Almighty to perpetuate upon you His visible and invisible blessings and bless your life, which is of pure goodness for humanity. May God perpetuate the blessings of prosperity, security and stability under your wise leadership! Your Majesty, in these days of bliss, we, the people of this country, live in mixed feelings of joy, elation, optimism and hope, while the Sultanate from end to end is celebrating your return back home, in good health. master, who has continued, since he took the lead in the Sultanate, to work for the happiness of his people. I remember His Majesty’s words: “I will work as hard as possible to make you all live a happy life and will look forward for a better future!” And he has lived upto that promise, preparing a prosperous life for his people who had endured years of suffering, hardships and helplessness. Your Majesty your wise guidance has always served as the engine that created a quantum leap in all walks of life in our beloved Oman. Such a quantum leap has resulted in energetic movement in economy and development, which we see as a tangible reality today. A new Oman has come out of Your Majesty’s wise leadership, a new Oman that lives in prosperity and is leaping towards the future under Your Majesty’s wise leadership. May God Almighty bless and protect you and give you a long and happy life.”

“A sense of gratitude washed over me…” Yuthar Al Rawahy, founder and chairperson, Oman Cancer Association: “I remember March 23 was a Monday, and we were at the Oman Cancer Association headquarters that evening finalising plans for the ‘Hug a Bear’ initiative. “It was then that I received a call from my husband that His Majesty had returned, we immediately stopped everything at the office and tuned in to Oman TV… when I saw His Majesty I was immediately relieved, a sense of gratitude washed over me, and like the rest of the nation I was totally enraptured for the next few moments following the report of his blessed return.

“We have him in our thoughts and prayers always, and were comforted to see him on screen. Back home, safe and sound. We all keenly felt his absence, but in keeping with his wise lead, we endured with silence and perseverance. “Alhumdlillah he is back with us, however it has been abundantly clear that despite his physical absence from the country the affairs of his people and the affairs of the nation have been uppermost in his mind.

“The love, respect and admiration he has engendered in his people were too overwhelming to be contained though. The jubilation upon his return by the country and those abroad has been a wonderful testimony to the great man and leader our beloved Sultan is. I am thrilled to have him back home and may Allah protect him for us always!”

“His muted and understated approach to his homecoming is a reflection of his international and domestic policies effective and powerful. It is obvious he intended both his absence and return to cause little to no disruption to our daily lives; even while away his thoughts and actions are always for Oman and Omanis best interests.

Kiran Asher, group managing director, Al Ansari Group of Companies: Everyone at Al Ansari – irrespective of positions or nationalities (local/expatriates) – had shared the feelings of emptiness upon His Majesty the Sultan’s departure to Germany for treatment. Since then all of them prayed for the complete recovery of His Majesty and some have even conducted group prayers in their faith for the safe return of their great leader.

On a company level, we have had several celebratory events inviting management and in-house employees to join the occasion. Our premises were beautifully decorated with the national flag of Oman, as well as having His Majesty’s pictures placed and employees wearing the national badge. To reinforce and remind us all we started our celebrations with a presentation on Oman’s transformation under His Majesty the Sultan, showing Oman move from a medieval dormant country to a vibrant, modern and flourishing nation with comprehensive growth in all the spheres – be it health, education, sports, infrastructure, commerce and industry, tourism, spiritual freedom and upliftment and overall well being of its citizens, inclusive of its expatriate residents. We showed the news clipping of His Majesty returning to Oman with a song celebrating his arrival back home, safe. The celebrations ended with prayers to the Almighty for the continued good health and long life for His 32

Majesty and further progress for Oman. Many of our team members danced while the celebratory song was played. All of us were overjoyed and that was evident in the emotions displayed during our celebrations, from clapping to tears of joy to pure happiness to have our leader back home, safe and healthy. We also conducted an interdivisional football tournament where all the expatriates and Omani’s play together and further celebrated His Majesty the Sultan’s return. We are indeed fortunate to be present during the golden Renaissance period of His Majesty. The various arrangements, infrastructure, healthcare, education, business opportunities and honourable living in a safe and secured environment provided by His Majesty are far too numerous to be listed. He has touched everyone’s life singularly and jointly to transform Oman into a vibrant and forward-looking nation. He has ensured that each and everyone is happy, irrespective of whether they are locals or expatriates who have made Oman their home.

Along with the 45 years of Oman’s renaissance, when we celebrate Al Ansari’s 40 years of establishment, we feel extra pleasure that our success has been under the reign of His Majesty too. It is time now for us to ensure that we also make our great leader happy. We must cultivate habits and functions in the manner in which he

has expressed his desire to the citizens to behave so that the golden march initiated by him rises far above the rest in the region for retaining its glory, the rich heritage, culture and prosperity for all the residents – be it Omanis or expatriates.

“A fitting expression of joy is to work much more harder than before!” Malik Fahmy Al Hinai, director, Bait Al Baranda: “The morning of Monday March 23 was the official opening of a befitting exhibition at Bait Al Baranda entitled ‘Remembrance (Dhikra )’ in Arabic. The displayed 3D multi layered calligraphy artworks were based on the chapter in the Holy Quran; the most excellent chapter being Surat Al Ikhlas, and its most excellent verse is Ayat Al Kursi. It mentions the name of Allah Most High more than any verse. Some verses may mention Allah twice but Ayat Al Kursi mentions Allah 17 times. With such recitation, attendance, displays that morning at Bait Al Baranda and unbeknownst to us, the arrival of His Majesty a few hours later was both a wonderful coincidence and rewarding. God had received our prayers! As a citizen, I am extremely grateful that His Majesty has recovered from his aliment and is healthy again. The only way to express my joy is to work harder, help build our nation, play a part in mentoring the next generation; that would be a more appropriate expression of joy on his return home, to his hard work in placing the Sultanate to where it is stands today." 3333

But then seeing him come out of the airplane gave me a huge sense of relief and a strong sense of security. What is important to me personally is that he returned on March 23, which is my birthday. It was a marvelous coincidence! I participated in two walks, one in Seeb organised by a top Majlis Al Shura member and the Women’s Walk organised jointly by Her Highness Sayyida Aliya bint Thuwaini Al Said and the Omani Women’s Association, Qurum. And if you ask me, my most ardent wish is that His Majesty would live forever! He is the symbol of stability, security, unity of this nation; he is the hope for the future of all who live in Oman! A celebration was organised via Oman Veteran’s Hockey Committee, under the patronage of the Oman Hockey Association recently at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. We organised an exhibition hockey match, which was played between Oman Veteran’s Hockey Team and Team Coorg Muscat. It was a thrilling affair and Team Coorg Muscat prevailed over Oman Veteran’s by a 4 to 3 margin. I coordinated the event and the hockey match was my brainchild. We all united to give this special tribute in commemoration of Oman’s great leader’s return to Oman. It was a special event for a special leader of this country! The chief guest was Engineer Dawood Ahmed Al Raisi, former chairman of Oman Hockey Association, a member of the F.I.H. and vice president, Asian Hockey Federation. Mohammed Shambeh Al Raisi, chairman of the Oman Veteran’s hockey committee and Salim Mubarak Al Rahbi, vice chairman O.H.A. and president of Ahli Sidab Club graced the occasion. Abdul Rahman Al Raisi, vice chairman of Oman Veteran’s Hockey Committee was also present. We also had Mohammed Rafiq, a wellknown figure in sports circles here. Mohi Saad Al Zaglool, the technical adviser of O.H.A., who was also present, complimented the efforts of Oman Veteran’s Hockey Committee.

The country’s national anthem was rendered by the Girls Student Choir of Indian School Al Seeb and Hamood Al Wahaibi conducted a prayer meeting for the health and prosperity and long life of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The Seeb Boy’s hockey team joined the celebration. It was wonderful to have with us the Indian School Seeb principal Nagesh Kelkar who was present along with his wife, who is the vice principal of the Indian School Mabela. The old hockey stalwarts from the 70s were invited and also honoured. Personally speaking, I am highly honoured that I have witnessed at close quarters the exciting progress Oman has made in the past 32 years since my arrival to this wonderful country on July 1, 1982. Thus, I am a witness to the progress and development of Oman as a modern state with peace and stability under the wise leadership of His Majesty the Sultan. Naturally it’s my second home and for me the successful return of His Majesty the Sultan back home is an unforgettable day for me. I join millions of Omanis and non-Omanis in our fervent prayers to give Oman’s great leader a long and healthy life. May God shower the divine blessing upon His Majesty!

What makes currencies rise and fall? By Dr CK Anchan

Since the last few years there were some massive fluctuations in the currency markets. Some currencies saw dramatic rises, while others fell just as precipitously. This was not isolated to emerging economies, but it did affect the world’s reserve currencies and largest economies on the planet. Mammoth trends in currencies play a major role in how individual lifestyles and how companies and countries conduct business. Currencies are like any other commodity, they are used and traded either for speculation, investment or as a medium of exchange. Currencies rise and fall because of basic supply and demand. Speculation, investments or economic activity all contribute to it. A currency that is weakening means that there is too much supply in the market. On an international scale, a currency is often defined as a way to exchange goods and services between countries with differing economies. Yet currency values are determined by a free market, which is open to multiple players with differing opinions and motives, means that actual trade fundamentals and economic data can get pushed aside.

Management Talk

In the last decade, Canada, Japan and the Eurozone all saw major moves in their currencies relative to the U.S. dollar. Every day, currencies are traded against each other relying mostly on technical factors than its fundamentals. If a currency’s value drifts far away from a country’s economic objectives, whether it has become too weak or too strong as a result of free market trading, the government steps in and artificially rebalances supply and demand. A governing body can attempt to reverse this 36

by making their currency a lot more expensive to acquire such as raising interest rates which in turn makes the currency harder to borrow. This move can either work or not because a higher interest rate also weakens economic activity that may further push the currency lower. A country’s currency does not always mirror economic conditions, a country may have a very robust economy but its currency may remain weak relative to other currencies. A weak economy can also deliver a strong currency depending on current factors but how is it done? The answer lies in speculation. A strengthening currency can be reversed through government intervention by flooding the market with more currency. This is done by decreasing interest rates or issuing new government bonds. This strategy has a higher success rate than attempting to strengthen it because these tactics contribute to inflation which makes a currency fall in value very fast. However, depending on the interpretation of the speculating herd, a weaker currency means cheaper export prices which can increase the demand for the currency. Currencies rise and fall in value because of multiple factors that can be interpreted differently by traders, investors or the government. As the currency moves to take advantage, there comes a point where profit potential becomes limited. At the same time, the movement of the currency has likely had an effect on other aspects of the economy, leading to an eventual reversal. Currencies are floated to ease economic shocks and help stabilise economies.

It's my life

Today's news Tomorrow's fish wrapper

Vandana, award winning author (‘360 Degrees Back to Life')

Recently my latest article appeared in a magazine, then a newspaper and then another one, all in the space of a week or so. I was overjoyed to read about myself in the news and felt ,in all fairness, very important. I was on top of the world and was packing my bags for my next trip when I saw that the old newspaper my house had been used by my hired help to wrap up my shoes for the trip so then I felt a biiiiig T-H-U-D.

That thud was a reality check for me. After all isn’t it true that today’s news is tomorrow’s fish wrapping, then can we base our entire self-worth based on being featured in the newspapers and what happens if we aren’t?

Does that make us ‘useless and not a VIP anymore’? I knowing in this day and age where Kim Kardashian is the epitome of success having made her fortune just by being ‘in the news’….her influence being such that even the Prime Minister of Armenia came to receive her at the airport and any new hairstyle or even the flick of her hair causing the shutterbugs to click furiously and making millions of dollars while being featured in magazines wearing sponsored designer freebies may seem like a fairy-tale but really, do you want every aspect of your life to be under the scanner and then the next day become that discarded newspaper.

Being in the news may be a validation of the work that we do, an applause for us and a pat on the back but it definitely isn’t the be all and end all of our existence and there’s more to life like real friendships, absence of dysfunctional families, peace and real happiness than just being in the news –fresh or stale.

Till next time love!

Black & White

Here are a range of interesting facts about the sun.

• The Sun is a star found at the center of the solar System. It makes up around 99.86 percent of the solar system’s mass.

• The sun moves at 220 kilometers per second. • The sun is 4.6 billion years old. • At around 1,392,000 kilometres (865,000 miles) wide, the sun’s diameter is about 110 times wider than earth’s.

• Around 74 percent of the sun’s mass is made up of hydrogen. Helium makes up around 24 percent while heavier elements such as oxygen, carbon, iron and neon make up the remaining percentage.

• Light from the sun reaches earth in around eight minutes. • The sun’s surface temperature is around 5500 degrees celsius (9941 degrees fahrenheit), so pack plenty of sunscreen if you plan on visiting (remembering that the average distance from the sun to the earth is around 150 million kilometers).

• The sun’s core is around 13600000 degrees celsius! • The sun generates huge amounts of energy by combining hydrogen nuclei into helium. This process is called nuclear fusion.

• A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is between the sun and the e arth.

Surely the sun shall shine soon!

We have been thinking of it since quite sometime now. Finally, we have taken the plunge to bring home to you some offbeat stuff. Here goes, if you like it, give us the green signal for more; if not, just take it with a pinch of salt. For this month, here is some nitter natter for the B&W Bitter Batter:

Mum’s the word The man in black was red in his face. Before his red face could turn redder, we asked if everything was okay and he burst out in anger: “What do you think? You think just because all of you are sitting in an air-conditioned comfort everything outside looks rosy to you?” Well, since the attack was on us, we turned defensive. Not at all, Sir. Almost every office in this town have “airconditioned comfort” and we are not wearing rose-coloured spectacles to see the world around us in that shade. But, we did not want to antagonise this man, as he was a good supporter of our causes and so we decided to give him a chance to air his views, vent his fury. Some people need that. What was ailing him, we asked. He explained. He was frustrated and angry because he was not able to meet his ends. “I have a severe problem; I don’t know where my money is going. I earn a good salary, but since I have made so many purchases through various loans, at the end of the day, I am left with nothing.”

But whose fault was that? Why was he angry with the world because he could n o t handle h i s finances properly? “I am not angry with the world! I am angry with myself. Can’t you guys understand anything? Can’t you give me some respect? I know I made a mistake, but do you guys have to rub it in?” We kept quiet. Sometimes, mum is the word when things go beyond your control.

Wrong number We have a good contact of an Omani gentleman somewhere near the Muttrah souq. We have saved his number in our phone and we have been contacting him in the past where he has given us leads to several good stories and in fact is quite a good raconteur himself. Now for the past year or so this man has changed his number and although we did meet him after that, never really saved up this new number. So for the last several times, we have been sending messages and calling up the other number to no avail…until the man with the old number of our contact responded. Or rather, he called us back and said, sorry this was a wrong number and he was beleaguered with calls asking for our contact. We apologised profusely but when we asked if this person had the new number of our old contact, he got angry. “That is for you to find out!” he said rudely cutting us. We did not feel all that bad, but unfortunately, a few months later, a requirement came

and without even thinking we dialed the same number and we were met with the same old person. “This is not 'so and so's' number. He has a new number now and many people have been contacting me thinking I was this man, told us politely.” We apologised again and finally went to where our old contact was working and got the new number of our contact. Everything okay, all issues settled? Well not exactly for just the other day we had sent a message out to several people about a new story we are doing and we had sent it a number thinking that was our old contact person in Muttrah. When he did not reply, we called him and the man picked up the phone and told us quietly: “This is not 'so and so's' number… many people have been contacting me….” We claim to be responsible scribes yet we are as careless as any. Sigh.

The Scream Recently our lensman had a scare. He was assisting his photographer friend organise an outside shoot and so it led them into the entrails of the mountains scattered in and around the city. So, the duo went deep – but not too deep – into the areas surrounded by mountains, set their tripod down and went into some serious shooting of the abundant natural landscape Oman is endowed with. They kept shifting their tripod to vantage areas where they could get maximum cover of the amazing expanse that was around there. They went on totally engrossed in their work and soon enough dusk began to eat into the natural light and they decided to call it quits. Just before they wrapped up, they decided to do one last shot of a distant scene and then something happened that had their hairs standing up. A blood-curdling scream! An unbelievably scary lady’s

shrieking and screeching ranted the thin dusk air and the duo suddenly found live fear giving them extraordinary wings. They had no clue as to what happened next as both of them just scurried into their car and zoomed off into civilisation. Later, another eerie and scarier scene awaited them as they checked out their pictures. A casual zoom into one of the last photos taken revealed some kind of a distant figure of a lady peering directly into the lens. But there was no way she could have seen them insist our lensman. They were shooting from quite a distance and without flash, so it was quite uncanny that she would have sighted them and besides that, the all-important question: why was she screaming? “Gives me the shudders,” says our muscled photographer, literally shivering.

Working mothers do NOT harm their children In this day and age, it is almost the norm to find both parents working. In a world, where one finds it increasingly hard to make both ends meet, it is important to have both parents working. But, are their children comfortable with this fact? And if we have a cursory look at those having dissident views on both parents working, one would feel that they are partial to the male members working.

WORKING FATHERS ARE OK Meaning, that it is alright for working fathers, but not so for working mothers. There seems to be some kind of an alternate view on working mothers. In fact, there is a clear view among some who feel that mothers who don’t work are best for their children. Now, is that true? Is it true that mothers who don’t work are the only ones who are best suited to take care of their children? Children need non-working mothers Studies worldwide prove that the attitudes to working mothers have not changed much. There is a steady school of thought that working mothers are not exactly good for their children. But, those for working mothers ask where is the evidence and yes, despite the sheer lack of evidence, there are still some who take the moralistic stance claiming that it was the working mothers who were hurting their children’s development. But, amidst this cacophony is the voice of sanity, quietly asking for the proof that workingmothers are to be blamed for the non-progressive development of their children, if at all they are thus affected. In fact, it has been proved that mothers do not harm their young children emotionally or socially by going out to work. In fact, earlier studies have shown that girls actually gain from “being in a household where their mother works”. These studies clearly state they saw no evidence of “detrimental effects

on the young children of mothers working part-time or full-time”. Of course, this does not mean that it is fine for parents to work long hours and thereby ignore their children. STUDIES PROVE OTHERWISE If studies alone are to be taken as a barometer, then it has been consistently found that working women did not affect their children’s development in anyway. Even the earliest of studies have found “no significant differences in school performance, psychosomatic symptoms, or closeness to their mothers” between children of working and nonworking mothers. Other researches also found that children whose mothers worked before they reached age three didn’t have worse academic or behaviour problems later in life than those with stay-at-home moms. There were even some positive benefits: toddlers with working moms grew up to have fewer problems with depression or anxiety and got better marks from teachers. Another large review of hundreds of studies found that “you can’t say very much about how a child will turn out simply because that child has an employed mother”! In fact, the underlying point in all these studies, whether detractors care to understand or not, is what mothers know intuitively: “If you are able to get the balance right, your child and your career can both flourish!” What else does a mother and her children need?

“I don’t think I am

BEAUTIFUL!”

Do women think they are beautiful? Does beautiful mean looking like everyone else? And if a woman thinks she is beautiful, what is it that she finds beautiful in her? Her face? Her eyes? Her body? Her personality? Do YOU think you are beautiful? A recent report published worldwide suggests that a “staggering 96 percent of women do not choose the word ‘beautiful’ to describe how they look”.

The Dove Choose Beautiful film captures real women in San Francisco,Shanghai, Delhi, London, and Sao Paolo considering about their own beauty. The women made a choice about the way they see themselves: ‘average’ versus the frequently avoided ‘beautiful.’ The film reveals that women often struggle with recognising their own beauty.

Dove has been slowly digging into the mysteries of the beauty that surrounds women and has in their earlier finds discovered various facets of women and their undeniable beauty. A decade or so back, they found out through a research that only two percent of thousands of women from 10 countries around the world considered themselves beautiful. The question they had asked after the study was pertinent: did this mean that we live in a world where women are not beautiful or did it mean that women around the world were calling for a broader definition of beauty? So, they set out to develop The Real Truth About Beauty: A Global Report, which explored the relationship women have with beauty. Specifically, Dove’s mission was “to determine how women define beauty; their level of satisfaction with their own beauty; and its impact on their sense of well-being”.

“Although the majority of women

It’s time women think differently about this choice,” said Steve Miles, senior vice president, Dove. “Dove Choose Beautiful urges women to embrace this choice, and inwardly challenge our tendency to not ‘choose beautiful’ because when we do it unlocks happiness and confidence that impacts women’s self-esteem.”

that beauty was never going away and had enormous power. Beauty should not be reduced to a political or cultural problem but understood as a basic human pleasure. The report noted however that the respondents were quite hesitant to claim ownership of the word “beauty”, with more than 40 percent strongly agreeing that they do not feel comfortable describing themselves as beautiful. Furthermore, only five percent feel comfortable describing themselves as pretty and a mere nine percent feel comfortable describing themselves as attractive, the report said. “Additionally, just 13 percent of women noted they were very satisfied with their beauty; 12 percent said they are very satisfied with their physical attractiveness; 17 percent are very satisfied with their facial attractiveness; and only 13 percent are very satisfied with their body weight and shape. In fact, in a society captivated by diet and makeover programmes, a third of women around the world were very or somewhat dissatisfied with their body weight. The women of Japan had the highest levels of dissatisfaction at 59 percent - followed by Brazil (37 percent), United Kingdom (36 percent) and the United States (36 percent),Argentina (27 percent) and the Netherlands (25 percent),” the report added. What that findings unveiled was that the “ideas of beauty and physical attractiveness are largely synonymous, and although both are highly valued by society, both are rendered almost impossible to attain”.

Only a woman!

Hooked

By Priya Arunkumar She sat in the corner of the bus and started on her family woes. Her mother is not able to adjust with her sister-inlaw. The brother is good, but the new sister-in-law has made lives hell at home. After marriage, her brother has changed completely and now is just a puppet in his wife’s hands… poor mother, she went on. She had a whole 'history' to complete. It was amusing because these stories never stop and no one knows how and when it starts! I am sure the other side of the story would be equally amusing; the sister-in-law’s side of it. There would be a monstrous mother-in-law and sister-in-law to add on to the spice. Whoever found out the world is round certainly has a point. Not geographically, the world is indeed round and everything goes around in circles. The whole world is out in arms, to empower woman, to save her, to protect her, to make her an equal. Everyone says… or rather everyone talks, everyone is angry at the system, the culture, at history, at instances, at issues, at accidents, at violence… But doing its rounds at all circles is still the same old line, she is only a woman! No I am not a feminist, nor am I fighting for any empowerment, or raising voice to prove a point, for fashion, or for being in at the current time. Every women born, every woman living, every woman suffering, every woman deprived, every woman crying knows who her enemy is.Herself! A woman’s enemy is only a woman! There is no hidden enemy for a woman, not a man, not destiny, not culture, not the society, not family, not circumstances, not education, not her weak physical nature. NO! The truth is a woman never wants

to be empowered. She never wants to be protected. She never wants to be equal. She has wars to fight within herself, with other women around. Look at the society today, who makes a society? People, comprising women; grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends… I believe the society is created by a mother. A mother is the one that creates new life, nurtures it in her body, bringing it in to this world with great strength. Then what happens? Where does it go wrong? Is the life she brought out in to the world destroying her own existence? I was travelling with a bus full of womenfolk and was hearing them talk. Not one of them talked about religion about career, global warming, education, or even plain simple entertainment. Most of them were immersed in their own little world filled with gossip, revenge, mischief among relations, how to handle neighbours, what happened in their relatives marriages and of course, married ones had bucket loads to talk about their in laws and marital woes. It was a depressing drive for me personally, tried hard to catch up some much needed sleep, but could not. The truth hits you hard that we women can never get out of our constipated emotions that we can never rise to positivity and add on to the growth of the nation until and unless we have our mind set changed. We are still fighting petty personal wars with fervour and passion if used positively that could have changed the destiny of a nation, not just a woman. Is it not the time to pause for a moment and look at empowerment ourselves, within us? priya@blackandwhiteoman.com
