Seasoned as well as jaded, but… By Adarsh Madhavan

When you are out of the mainstream newspaper industry for years, you feel a bit jaded. Okay, you are seasoned, but still quite jaded. It is during these moments, I think…maybe, just maybe, I am not in the right profession. But, decades after being in this profession, it is a rather late awakening, right?

All about X, Y & Z

And if I have not been able to make an impact in this field, it is entirely my fault. Not the media’s. Suddenly realising that I was an all time misfit in the media world is not anyone’s fault, nor even the industry’s. It is a professional mishap. I should have realised this much earlier. I know I am too inhibited, introverted and a down and about anti social for this profession. And I am lazy and lethargic too. I am okay if you want to hold a press conference past midnight, but, would dread it if it was held in the morning hours. Each day I drag myself from bed to my office and I simply have lost that what you call that-thingamajig? That drive, that spirit, that simple need to perform is lacking in me…so why did I choose this field where you can easily be in the glare? But when such late bolts of realisation happen you are literally left stranded. You wouldn’t know what to do. Same here. Yet, there is one small flicker of desire still – this whole thing about being a journalist is really something else. I know deep inside me that I still feel that I should do something about this mantle I have unwittingly taken – I mean, really become responsible. I understand that the dryness in the profession comes after years of self-inflicted blindness and also the fact that I am no longer in the quicksilver world of newspaper journalism makes me a bad candidate for any campaigns. But I wish I had one last swing at one campaign: I wish we could bring about the old world of journalism back to life; inject some do-good feel in the approach

to our stories and yes, kick that derisive cynicism – so essential to the bad, bad world of journalism -- out of our back pack. Don’t get me wrong. I am opposed to mushiness and I am not saying promote sob stories. No. Attack with everything you got! Everything! The power of our pen is beyond imagination. And we still have that tremendous power. Of course, there are limitations; in fact, we have plenty of limitations here, but even in this world of limitations, there are million of things we could do, if only we could set our minds to it. I think the problem of journalism practiced in this part of the world vis-à-vis the so-called freer media world is that we, most often, hanker for things beyond our limitations. If we know our limitations, stick to it and work in such a manner that the law of the land is not compromised, we would be making a good start. Like I said, there are plenty of things we scribes could do within our limitations here. There are hundreds and thousands of people from various communities who are living a life of misery for no fault of their own. An objective look at highlighting their plight and make real attempts to free them from the yoke of pain, the privation and the paucity of funds that they suffer from can be one of the simplest attempts by the media here. We don’t have to drop our daily beats and subscribe to a charity theme. We don’t have to give everything up for the pursuit of someone else’s happiness. We don’t have to give half of our monthly earnings to fill some empty coffers. But, we can lend a hand. We can actually lend more than a hand; we can unite to bring some light at the end of the tunnel for these poor souls. Honestly, we won’t lose a thing. We will only gain. What are we waiting for? editor@blackandwhiteoman.com

Most essential to have KG I have gone through the story ‘Learning ABCD…’ and totally enjoyed it. I applaud and admire the efforts of this lone school from the interior trying to bring forth a kindergarten revolution in their school. But, I do not understand why Omani schools do not have KG in their schools? I think it is most essential to have KG! I liked the story but I guess I would have liked it better if your magazine focussed on the theme that Oman’s education system should adopt KG. You should have done a story saying see how a small school in a remote area was attempting to better itself by adopting KG and stressed on the need for all schools in Oman to do so. Sorry for being critical, but while I admire your efforts in bringing about a story like this, and also including the charity angle, I still feel that you did not grab an opportunity like this to drive home the point that KG should be introduced in all schools. Kenneth Lambert, Tourist, Wisconsin, USA

Dar Al Atta’a opens eyes Dar Al Atta’a has always been on the forefront in issues of charity and they have once again opened our eyes to an important issue – of the need to introduce KG in the Omani government schools. Education is one of the biggest gifts we can give our children and if we have managed to impart the best of education to them, then, let us say that we have fulfilled at least a major portion of our task on earth. But the most important fact remains that education should start young. We need to bring education to not only every doorstep, but to make everyone realise that it should be imparted at the right age – that is the kindergarten age. Let us all strive to educate every child in every part of the word, beginning from our own home! Waleed bin Salim Al Habsi, Ad Daliyah.

Reader's column

Joint charitable initiative We would like to commend the efforts of the school (Suffanah bint Hatim Al Taei school) in Yiti village. They have really set an example by voluntarily starting kindergarten classes in their school. Efforts of Dar Al Atta’a and the Black & White are also commendable. Together they have risen to the needs of a school by pledging to support their drive to have a full -fledged KG section. Such a joint charitable initiative only goes on to prove that if we unite and fight we can do anything – even move mountains! Yasmin Barua, Seeb April 7 - May 6 8 B&W 2 0 1 3

Made Omani women proud Buthaina, you have done Omani women proud! We are very proud of you and your attempt to reach the Antarctica! You and Zeena Al Towayya (issue 55) are an inspiration and have totally motivated us to do well not only in our work but also to do something for our beloved country! God be with you both! Fatma Al Balushi, Nasra and Zubaida

Totally inspiring I agree with Abdullah Al Hadhramy (Readers Forum, issue 55) about the exploits of the Omanis in general, and with the exploits of the four young spirited Omanis who went to explore Antarctica in particular. More than anything, their determination to succeed is really inspiring. Please give us an update when they return. Looking forward to reading about their exploits in Antarctica. Salim Al Kindi, Muttrah

Oman to sign in the treaty I understand from the story (issue 55) that Oman is yet to sign in the Antarctica treaty. So far, this is the third expedition –Bader Al Rahbi and Ali Al Esry were the first to take part in the International Antarctica Expedition (IAE); Zeena in the second and the 'Incredible Four' in the third. Hopefully, after the ‘fantastic four’s’ return from Antarctica, they will push Oman to sign in the treaty. For, every sign matters! Nasser Al Harthi, Qurum

Men read

Good men Maybe we may know it all, but then, let us just try to look at some of the simple ways that a man can actually work at being a good man to his future woman. Now, we may have it all worked out right to the ‘T’. But, if you have not really found the woman of your dreams, or simply put, haven’t been lucky enough to meet your future wife, then there is something that you are doing wrong (oh yes, you are fantastic and all that, but just give it a thought)! April 7 - May 6 10 B&W 2 0 1 3

YOU ARE GOOD Just ponder these possibilities and make a dedicated effort at being good. Perhaps, you may think that this would be just a pretense at being good, but in effect, when you do good, you are being good. If you have an intention to do good and then you don’t, that is when you are way off the mark. Let them, let the women, know that you are good.

RESPECT IS PARAMOUNT First things first as always and so here we go: Remember that the most important thing that a woman needs is respect. You don’t show respect, you don’t get it. In fact, even if I may sound a bit preachy here, try to treat all women with respect. Try, of course, to treat everyone with respect, but, try to treat women especially, with great amount of respect. If you shower respect on her, then, mind you, half the battle is almost won. LAVISH ATTENTION Then, go to the next stage. Don’t ignore her. Don’t see through her or pretend that she is dead. If you show attention to her and notice every change in her, every time she has that change, she will realise that you are attentive. Yes, there are occasions when your mind is distracted and there are too many things on your mind, but, then, if you notice the little changes in her, the hair cut, the new dress, the new shoes, the new lipstick, the fact that she has actually lost a little weight…everything goes, my friend. It works! Now, let us move on to the more serious factors. A woman needs a man who is responsible, stable and also offers security. Are you up to it?

RESPONSIBILITY Getting married is a big responsibility, so, if you are not upto it, then, you need to think twice. You have to take responsibility for your own business; do your job right, take care of your family (your parents and the like)… if you are already taking care of them, then the woman who may come into your life may get the much needed confidence to take the plunge with you. STABILITY If you are responsible, then you are also going to have a stable background, which means you have a steady job, and this shows that you can be a care provider. If you don’t have a job, then how are you going to look after your spouse-to-be; your children, what future will you and your family have? You can’t live on air, right? Women need men who are secure not only financially, internally but physically as well. The crux of the matter is simple: women need to settle down with men who are not just rich and good looking; they need to have a man who is caring, who is responsible, stable and will look after them and the children forever.

Some men want to

Men health

gain weight

April 7 - May 6 12 B&W 2 0 1 3

YOU WANT TO GAIN WEIGHT?! This would be the instant reaction of many to whom you have approached with a query on how to gain weight. It might sound strange to quite a lot of people because today the world is populated with one major task of losing weight. There are thousands out there giving advices to millions who want to lose weight. So, sometimes, this query to gain weight might be lost in the cacophony of those yodeling to lose weight. For those out there desperate to lose weight, this question might sound like a nasty joke on them. However, this is quite a legitimate query for those who find themselves on the light end of the scale. While most of the people find overweight problems and struggle to keep the kilos off, others find it just as challenging to put weight on. There is of course no end to the advice given for those wanting to lose weight, but what about the poor souls who want to gain? What do they do; where do they go? The ones who are very underweight also have to look at various physical risks that they may unfortunately encounter: Complications in surgery and slow recovery after illnesses. Impaired immunity, Bone/joint problems, Anaemia etc. It is important to see that the weight you want to gain should be equally distributed all over the body, and not only around your waist. SLOW AND STEADY Men are known to have more muscle mass than women. Muscle burns more calories per minute at rest than fat. Therefore, some men find it challenging to gain weight naturally. If you are struggling to gain weight and are tired of using weight gain shakes or simply want to take a natural approach, you may be happy to know that with patience and dedication, you can naturally gain weight. Keep in mind that even slow, steady weight gain is beneficial. Gaining a mere

1/4 lb. per week will lead to a gain of 13 lbs. over the course of a year, say weight trainers. CONSULT A DIETICIAN The first approach is to consult a dietitian, who will set up a regular food intake pattern and most importantly, teach you how to increase your caloric intake with healthy, calorie-dense foods. THE CALORIE FACTOR “Eat enough calories. Include three meals a day in your diet and add calories in your snacks and beverages. Snack suggestions include a bowl of cereal, cheese and crackers, or a banana with peanut butter. Whole milk is also rich in protein and will help pack on the pounds. While you still need to eat healthy, you may allow yourself to have extra helpings to encourage weight gain. It takes about 3,500 extra calories to gain a pound. Count your calories daily and jump on the scale once a week,” advices a health site. FIT INTO AN EXERCISE PROGRAMME Go and fit yourself into an exercise programme. Are we contradicting ourselves here? No, not at all! Your motive is to gain weight, but ensure that you don’t just add fat--you want to add muscle, too. According to health magazines, you should eat something after every workout--even if you are not hungry. LIFT IT UP “Lifting weights (at least three times a week) will build muscle. A personal trainer may help direct you for more specific exercises. Cereal, rice, pasta and fruits will all help add carbs to your diet--giving you the fuel to continue your exercise programme. You may also want to try low calorie, but high protein snacks and supplements to help build muscle, but not so much fat,” the magazine says. SLEEP IT OFF Reduce stress. For some people, stress causes them to gain weight. For others, it causes them to lose weight. Get plenty of sleep so your body can function properly. ADD SUPPLEMENTS Try supplements. Keep track of your daily diet and make a note of anything you might be missing. Some people gain weight just fine sans any supplements.

By Adarsh Madhavan I was waiting in a car for someone, recently. Normally, when I get some spare time I would set my mind in ‘think’ mode; but lately, owing to many reasons, I am perpetually fatigued, and I would often get into ‘blank’ mode, or more honestly, ‘sleep’ mode. Since I am often withdrawn, any untoward issues drive me deeper into my shell. I was beginning to ruminate my state of affairs, and in the process was about to push the car seat back and lean into my stray thoughts when I saw some movement on top of the mountains before me. Wind, I thought and then a thin little brown dog came into my vision. It was a very thin dog and it looked quite starved, but it was not slinking; it walked straight, stiff, proud and with dignity. I switched to active mode as I saw it. Now, there is nothing exciting about a thin brown dog. You may have seen such dogs a number of times and would never have even paid the scantest attention to it. Our minds are bursting with so many things, problems, things to do, work matters, issues to settle, and a whole lot of mountainous tasks and responsibilities, so much so, everything else would be trivial before it. We don’t have time for anything else. And who will have time for a poor little starving wadi dog? Not us! The dog was some distance away and it could not see me. It was walking in the blistering heat, while I was ensconced in a comfortable car, with the A/C turned on at the right temperature. This little doggy walked over the hot rocks under a scalding sun, sniffed at some rocks that seemed to have a remote smell of food someone must have thrown there. That seems to be the best part of those who litter; those who indiscriminately throw excess food around. Of course, I had no clue why the poor little doggy smelt some particular spots of the craggy mountain it was on. Smell of food could be the only reason, I thought, wishing desperately that I had some food on me to give it to this dog.

It moved around a bit and then stuck its nose in some corner. Someone must have thrown some food there…Perhaps, someone must have had a sandwich and would have thrown the non edible remains away there, I mean, I don’t know, I am just guessing. The wind flapped down a small plastic sheet and it suddenly descended on the doggy and he jumped up frightened, almost tumbled down the side of the mountain. Of course it was nothing to be scared of, but for a dog whose life is always on the run, everything unusual is startling; scary. Distracted, it moved further down on the mountain. I guess it had immediately gained composure because it soon moved about with the same amount of confidence and dignity as before. I could see its ribs sticking out, but it still looked as though it was not the type of dog that would beg for a living. Soon it reached a ledge and from there I saw it looking intently down. Below it was a major construction activity and there were quite a number of people working there. Probably, that also meant some scope of food. The doggy actually sat there and looked down. From where I was, I could see its face too, but not its eyes. For a moment, I saw its tongue out, slightly licking its mouth; it must be drooling, I realised, hoping for something edible below. When would be the last time it ate or drank something? Days maybe…maybe more? I saw it staring relentlessly down below. What would it have seen? I knew there were just people engaged in a noisy construction activity. But, what was this little one seeing? Some kind of mirage where food was piled up? Enough to satisfy its every pore? And then as suddenly as I saw it there on the mountain, the little brownie disappeared down the ledge... adarsh@blackandwhiteoman.com April 7 - May 6 15 B&W 2 0 1 3

In Black & White

In Black... You watch Yanni perform twice, thrice; it still feels like a first time because Yanni and his team of artists perform it in that manner! For them every night of performance is like a first time performance! Mohamed Issa Al Zadjali Editor-in-chief A FIRST-TIME EXPERIENCE We organised the first-ever Yanni live in concert in October 2011. It was a houseful show. The three months of exhaustive work put in by the B&W team was worth every minute of hardship when we saw Yanni perform live at an indoor venue. And when Yanni’s team announced the 2013 global tour – which included Oman -- this year, hardly 17 months from the first performance, many asked us whether we are right in our decision to bring Yanni back again. Oman is too small a market for repeat shows; they said… you want to do Yanni show at an outdoor venue too, are you doing the right thing, they queried. WORTH EVERY EFFORT We went ahead and planned, scheduled and produced yet another episode of Yanni live in concert. Successfully, we would say. But, it evoked mixed reactions. Of course, we had a full house, with a near 1000 people flying in to Oman to watch the show. Once again the backbreaking schedule was worth every minute because of the end result. Yanni and his team performed with passion and dedication. Their power is mesmerising and what is worth mentioning is the unique first time experience the audience feels, every time they watch him

perform! I am not contradicting myself here. Every show of Yanni looks unique and a first time experience! The B&W team had the unique opportunity of witnessing Yanni in Oman, Doha and in Dubai too… Three countries, many performances and all shows were unique and absorbing! EVERY TIME IS A 'FIRST TIME' You watch Yanni perform twice, thrice; it still feels like a first time, because Yanni and his team of artists perform it in that manner! For them every night of performance is like a first time performance! They are enjoying every minute of it and makes sure that their audience enjoys it too. Maybe we all can learn a lesson from here… passion and dedication can make life worthwhile. YANNI IN QATAR The B&W had the opportunity to be involved in the two Yanni live shows in Doha, Qatar in association with the organisers Bandera Qatar, an Oman-based event management company. The two shows held at the Qatar National Convention Centre were simply fantastic and it was also the first-ever global live concert in Doha too. This issue of Black & White will give you glimpses of Yanni shows in Oman and in Doha… moments and images frozen for posterity…

Yanni’s phenomenal music cuts across all borders Musical phenomenon Yanni’s music cut across all borders and boundaries when he performed live at a near 5000 strong audience at the City Amphitheatre in Qurum, late last month. Like the musician always says, his goal is to connect with people emotionally; taking life’s experiences and translating them into music. And that is what he has done on his current world tour, ‘World Without Borders’ and that is what he did on that slightly foggy March evening in Muscat. With his music he captured the hearts of everyone present making

them forget for sometime that a world existed beyond the amphitheatre walls. TheYanni Live in Oman was organised by Black & White and it was powered by Muscat Eye Laser Center and Lulu. The support sponsors included Hi 95.9 FM (radio), Times of Oman and Al Shabiba (media), Cadillac (car) and Intercontinental Muscat (hospitality). The other sponsors were: Patchi, Bateel, Oasis water, Nova and Gargash & Trade Links. The event was held in support of the Dar Al Atta’a Yiti village school project. Photos: KJ George / Ben

APPLES… • Apples are a member of the rose family. • Apples come in all shades of reds, greens, and yellows • The apple tree originated in an area between the Caspian and the Black Sea. • Apple varieties range in size from a little larger than a cherry to as large as a grapefruit. There are apples that have an aftertaste of pears, citrus, cinnamon, cloves, coconut, strawberries, grapes and even pineapple! • The science of apple growing is called pomology. • Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. • It takes energy from 50 leaves to produce one apple. • Fresh apples float because 25 per cent of their volume is air • Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they were refrigerated • A bushel of apples weighs approximately 42 pounds, or 19kg. We have been thinking of it since quite sometime now. Finally, we have taken the plunge to bring home to you some offbeat stuff. Here goes, if you like it, give us the green signal for more; if not, just take it with a pinch of salt. For this fortnight, here is some nitter natter for the B&W Bitter Batter:

Blame them too Airlines always get all the blame. They are never on time, they have very bad service; their staff is too rude, discourteous and arrogant; the airlines charge too much etc etc etc... But how come we don’t condone the behaviour of passengers? Let us look at the other side too. While we agree that airlines do all that and more as mentioned above, why is it that we never talk about the unpardonable behaviour exhibited by some passengers? We don’t mean to say all passengers are bad, but then, not all passengers are good too. The fact is there are some bad passengers who exhibit ugly behaviour. While we do not want to name names, we will go in a random style detailing some of the bad behaviour by us (we, the passengers). For instance, there was this lady who was travelling alone and was unable to get a business class seat on an airline travelling to India. The ruckus she created in economy class was beyond anyone’s comprehension. If she did not want to travel in economy, then why did she do so? Once she got in, she began to display such bad behaviour that fellow passengers themselves began to complain. The moment this lady was shown the seat, she started her blame game, punctuated with demands to be moved to the business class. The polite airhostess told her that the business class was full, but our madam would not listen

to this. When she was led to her window seat, she said that she wanted an aisle seat. A good natured passenger allowed her to exchange his seat, but after the plane takes off she demanded back her window seat and then later complained that she did not want to sit “next to men”. She began to make excessive demands and actually stood up demanding attention asking for her to be moved to business class. Then there was this other man who seems to have had too much bubbly even before boarding and once on board began to loudly ask for more and began to harass the flight attendants so much they had to warn him that he would be held back at the airport upon landing. Another case of a lady having too much and walking barefoot to the flight attendant’s area and making a ruckus because they took just under five minutes to get her third refill. And oh, the tales run on, but that is enough for this time…

Nitter natter

Funeral etiquette Who will dare display bad behaviour at a funeral? You will not believe it but they are members of our own tribe -- scribes! Who will think of going to a place where the majority are mourning, still reeling in shock of a loved one’s passing away and there comes a bunch of uninvited people who exhibit unpleasant, rude and loud behaviour. It is not okay by any standards and it is definitely not okay for the media to exhibit such ugly behaviour. We were at the funeral of someone close and everyone who attended were in a somber mood…except for this two. They seemed as though they were at some bachelor birthday party the way they cracked jokes, made snide remarks about the dear departed and played games with water. April 7 - May 6 40 B&W 2 0 1 3

When women get aggressive Women can be aggressive and when they wear this makeup, it doesn’t look good on them. Aggressive men are definitely not likeable either, but somehow aggressive women are quite awful. Now, being in the media, we meet all type of people. We meet so many aggressive women on a daily basis that we tend to take it in our stride. One case is that of a big shot hubby woman who wants to write for us. Okay she came to us using a contact so we couldn’t say anything back to her. We forgave her for the first time, but the second time she threw her weight around, we politely told her to take a hike. Currently she is busy, she tells us. She is traveling, so the moment she gets back, she wants to meet us. Fine, but she wants to fix the meeting right away. So give me a date when we can meet, she says and we baulk at the idea. We are not sure about our meetings for tomorrow, yet she wants us to fix something up for two weeks after, ha! Then there is this other aggressive woman who invites us to a lunch. She works for an internationally known company and so she believes that we have to just confirm even if we don’t want to go. We don’t confirm, we say maybe and she takes it for granted that it is a yes. And then, she throws a fit when we don’t turn up. That is not all. After this she threatens to complain to our bosses because we seem to have stood her up. Wow, women simply cannot take rejection of any kind.

Final scores We also remember a lady who was quite good at this. She used to fight with almost everyone who came in her path and by some unfortunate means if something bad happens to anyone she has fought with, she would make sure to go to their homes and add more grief to their misery. How? By actually raising the topic of their old fight and arguing how they were wrong and she was right. She was mad, yes, but we live in a mad mad mad world. Don’t we?

Your ARIES March 21-April 20 You’ll need to gather all your patience to deal with obstacles and restrictions this week, so try to stay calm and focussed. Take a realistic look at relationships. If your needs aren’t being met its time to sit round the debating table.

CANCER June 22-July 23 You’ll need to leave personal problems on the back burner this week as work and money matters need your full attention for now. Just be careful edginess or friction doesn’t lead to resentment in the workplace as it may spill over into your home zone.

TAURUS April 21-May 20

GEMINI May 21-June 21

Your well laid plans could hit a snag due to a pessimistic individual who seems hell bent on holding you back. Try not to lose your temper as confrontations could become explosive. Unexpected work developments need a fast response. Think on your feet.

Try to be enthusiastic and optimistic where your hopes and dreams are concerned this week, as a positive mental attitude will go a long way to reaching your goals. Try to avoid so called friends who drain your time, energy and finances. They’re not worth it.

LEO July 24-August 23 If you come across as too aggressive at work or play, someone will be only too glad to stop you in your tracks. Try not to let it get to that stage. Keep a low profile during the week and you’ll be able to let your hair down and have fun by the weekend. Pace yourself.

VIRGO August 24-September 23 Leave petty frustration on the doorstep and do your best to forge ahead and lay the groundwork for plans for the future. The full moon mid week asks you to make snap decisions over finances, but try to stall until you have your bearings. Work within your limitations.

Horoscope

ADOLF HITLER (APRIL 20, 1889 – APRIL 30, 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the Nazi Party. He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and dictator of Nazi Germany (as Führer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945. Hitler was at the centre of Nazi Germany, World War II in Europe, and the Holocaust. Hitler was a decorated veteran of World War I. He joined the German Workers' Party in 1919, and became leader of the NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers Party) in 1921. After his appointment as chancellor in 1933, he transformed the Weimar Republic into the Third Reich, a single-party dictatorship based on the totalitarian and autocratic ideology of Nazism. Hitler's aggressive foreign policy is considered the main cause of the outbreak of World War II in Europe. His antisemitic policies and racially motivated ideology resulted in the death of at least 5.5 million Jews and millions of other people deemed racially inferior.

stars LIBRA September 24-October 23 You start the week in good spirits but angry feelings with a partner or family member can lead to a dangerous struggle for control. If you don’t take the lead and assert yourself others will snatch the reins.

CAPRICORN December 23-January 20 It’s a week to be persistent even when others try to throw obstacles in your path. Patience is in short supply, but you’re made of sterner stuff so hang onto your principles, hopes and dreams. Change is inevitable so embrace the opportunity to improve.

SCORPIO October 24-November 22 If you’re deliberately inflexible you’ll only invite difficulties at work and home, so try to meet others half way. Compromise. Your emotions are on the edge but don’t let others push your buttons or you’ll erupt like mount Vesuvius. Try to get some down time for yourself.

SAGITTARIUS November 23-December 22 You’ll find it hard to be outwardly expressive if your inner restrictions doubts and fears subconsciously hold you back. Try to find your core and centre yourself. Money struggles at the weekend bring conflicts over control issues. Will you win?

AQUARIUS January 21-February 19 Don’t let career frustrations spill over into your home zone or you’ll taint the happy positive feelings you’ve built up there. Try not to overstate your case at work or you’ll bring unforgiving retribution. Maybe taking time off to travel would be a good idea.

PISCES February 20-March 20 Try not to make long term financial commitments as you’re not really in the position to make bonding contracts right now. If you do then pull out there will be hell to pay so be careful. A lift in your emotions and finances comes out of the blue over the weekend.

All superb equipment to cleanse away the toxins in my home, not the one built of bricks and mortar, but the one that houses my heart and soul.

Over the years we keep accumulating the grime of revenge, hatred, pettiness, one upmanship against others in our heart, which reflects in our actions. We curse them, hurt them, think of ways of harming them and are sometimes quite successful and if we fail we try again. Ever entered a house packed with dust, it incites nothing but repulsion and our first thought is to run away from it or to clean it. It’s the same with all these negative feelings. Our negativity can be said to be like dust spots which create the grooves of dirt in our heart eventually causing others to be repelled by us.

When we are not ready to keep our brick and mortar houses filthy then why do we keep accumulating the layers of muck in our own heart? What good does it do? What purpose does it serve? In fact, it’s a well documented medical and social fact that dirt is harmful for health. So why bother accumulating it?

If we can spring clean our hearts everyday with the vacuum of forgiveness there will be none of the slipperiness that slime causes nor will there be the footprints left in the layers of dust. We will actually not only attract all the good people around us but also lose the excess weight of our slime carried in our hearts and become lighter and happier. I’m doing it this spring, I hope you are too.

Love and hugs!

Banana yoghurt crepes Ingredients: 1 3/4 cups fat-free or low-fat lactose-free milk 3/4 cup flour 1 egg 1 egg white 2 table spoons honey or maple syrup, divided 1 (8 ounce) container low-fat banana or vanilla yogurt 1banana, diced 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Fresh mint sprigs (optional) Powdered sugar (optional Method: Whisk together fat-free or low-fat lactose-free milk, flour, egg, egg whites and one tablespoon of honey in a

medium bowl. Allow batter to rest five minutes at room temperature. Heat a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium heat. Pour 1/4 cup batter into skillet; quickly tilt and swirl batter to coat bottom of skillet. When crepe is lightly browned at edges, use a thin spatula to loosen and turn over. Cook turned crepe about 20 seconds or until lightly browned; slide onto plate to cool. Continue making crepes with remaining batter. To prevent sticking, place a piece of wax paper between each crepe. Puree yogurt, vanilla and remaining honey in a blender or food processor until smooth. Add diced banana. Spread each crepe with about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the yogurt mixture. Roll crepes into cylinders. Garnish with mint sprigs, if desired.

Apple crepes Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons margarine, melted 1 1/2 cups milk 2/3 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 eggs 8 apples, cored, peeled and sliced 3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 pinch nutmeg

Method: In a bowl, beat the two tablespoons of melted butter, milk, flour, salt and eggs together until smooth. Set aside for at least 1/2 hour, preferably two hours to allow flour to

absorb milk and thicken up. Meanwhile, core, peel and slice apples. Place the second amount of butter into a pan along with the remaining ingredients. Saute on medium low heat until soft and slightly brown. Set aside and keep warm on minimum heat. Preheat a crepe pan or non-stick pan on medium heat. Brush butter on the bottom of the pan. Pour 1/4 cup of the batter into crepe pan and tip pan to coat bottom. Cook for about two minutes or until the top is set and the bottom is slightly brown. Gently flip crepe and let cook for another 30 seconds and slide out onto a wax paper. Continue until all batter is used. Place crepe on working surface; add a two or three tablespoons of apple filling. Roll 1/2 way and tuck in ends. Finish rolling and set aside. Serve warm and sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar if desired or vanilla ice cream if serving for desert! April 7 - May 6 49 B&W 2 0 1 3

ask a lady…

Shape n sound

“Ma, why do you always give out the wrong age when people ask your age?” the teenage daughter once asked her 30 plus mother. The latter shyly smiled at her 13 year old daughter and told her: “One day you will understand!” The little girl never understood this side of her mother. She felt her mother was lying and it did not bode well with her code of ethics. “I could never understand why my mother always used to lie about her age,” the girl would tell her close friends, some of whom had also mothers who pretended to be younger than they were. “Age is just a number,” the girl used to say. That is until she grew up. “I slowly began to understand that there is more to it than meets the eye,” she said. “As I got older, I understood it!” “Today, everyone thinks I am younger than my age, and I let it be!” she laughs. Although some brave women do say that age is just a number, many feel that it, unfortunately, labelled them. April 7 - May 6 50 B&W 2 0 1 3

ALL WOMEN ARE BELOW 30 Why is that women always have to be aged below 30? What is the big fuss? But, whatever we say, there are plenty of women out there who will never tell us their age. Women are often guilty when it comes to lying about their age and will go to any length to maintain a youthful look by undergoing surgery, Botox and spending money on expensive fitness trainers.

ask why women lie? Women need to – nay, are forced to – lie about their age in order to secure a plum job. Some organisations want to hire people in their early 20s and would not even consider a candidate who is above 30. Many job seekers are guilty of not being truthful about their age. That is because a clueless 23 year old gets the job while a 30 year old who can do far better is denied it. So, what else can they do but to lie?

LYING ABOUT THEIR AGE Why do people – especially women -- lie about their age? Some say that women lie about age because telling the truth would bring certain expectations in others, or maybe lower their expectations too. Let us face it; the world does treat the one who is aged with a mixture of respect as well as derision. The world does dole out different status for those who are old and those who are young. There are many things that those who are past cannot enjoy, not because there is no rule saying that, but because society wishes so, or deems so. It is believed that when people get to know your age, they put you in a particular place in their minds and when you do certain things, they’ll say stuff like “is she not too young (or too old) to be doing that? Unfortunately, the world always wants you to do things according to your age and not according to what your heart tells you. That’s why many people would rather lie about their age than have you scrutinise their actions each time.

GRAVITATIONAL PULL The sad part is that there are also women who tend to deceive their future partner by lying about their age. But, what else can they do? Many men automatically gravitate towards young women and thus those who don’t fit the bill are left with no choice. Some drop out of the race, while others resort to other means. The media gives us the impression that aging is a disease and that if you are 30 years and above, you are over the hill. Women are often the prime target of anti- aging, anti-wrinkle and age fighting creams and lotions. The older women become (especially actresses), the more they are relegated to the back seat. Therefore, lying about your age can buy you more time.

YOUTH ARE HIRED Will your company hire a man or woman over a certain age? Well, so the answer is staring at your face when we

A woman of SUBSTANCE Admit it. There are days when your life, your job, your friends, your family (husband and children, parents) all drive you crazy. Then what happens, do you blow up, scream, shout, rant and rave? Say and do unpleasant things? You know, it is so easy to do that. So easy to lose yourself in a whirl of anger; so easy to blame someone else! But, then that is if you are not different from the rest of the women. That is when you don’t possess a strong character or is consistent with your beliefs; that is when you are unable to conduct your life with patience. So, even if your life is in a sudden crazy mess, you have to grab hold of yourself; show immense patience…Why? The answer is ready and waiting: because you are a woman of substance. And, because as books and articles say it, there is more to you than meets the eye, and you possess great depth of personality, character, and you are honest and live a life of integrity. That is why we say that you are a woman of substance. WOMAN HAS AN EDGE Sounds trite? Sounds boring? What is the point in bringing up such a topic in a world that is moving so fast that the line of good and bad, moral and immoral is so thin and fading that some of us are going to feel bewildered by this feverish pace? But we feel it is important to build up this topic here as we need women of substance and men of honour in our lives. Still we feel that women get an edge over men because without them we are nothing. There is nothing in this world that can beat a woman. Not even a man. Well, this is a matter which is subject to discussion but today the focus is on women. Especially women of substance who conducts herself with patience and with honesty and integrity. Such a woman is the quintessential of peacefulness, love, patience and selflessness. In effect, she is not shallow. HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH But, a woman of substance is not just about being a woman, a daughter, a wife or a mother. There is more to it than meets the eye. Let us look at a woman who holds her head high, and carries herself with respect, come what may. And the other important factor is that she does not try to compete with other women. She is dynamic, she is a leader, she is focussed on bettering herself and she is also keen to better other people’s lives. Meaning, there is a real concern about others. A woman of substance is not defined by her gender, her ability or inability to give

birth. Nor, does she think that she is lesser than a man or a woman. ADEPT AT FACING CRISIS In fact, don’t try to threaten her with another woman. She is least bothered. And it is not a put on; she is not bothered. She is brimming with confidence and high self esteem and she is ready to take on any challenges. She is adept at facing crises and she has the courage and temerity to rise above such challenges. At the same time, she has immense compassion and great love for those who are less fortunate than her. When it comes to love and commitment, she gives selflessly and she is there for the people she loves and values. She also doesn’t run after men or money. There is a calmness about her that needs to be experienced to be understood. Because of the inner calm, she also has the ability to take tragedies in her stride and she also has the great patience to wait for her man – her man of substance, of honour. And if it does not happen, she does not jump on the first man she meets. She waits because she knows that what is intended for her will come to her finally. And it will be worth the wait! A FAMILY WOMAN A woman of substance values her family highly. She cares about building a firm relationship with her husband if she is married, not a shallow relationship based on firstattraction feelings. She knows that love is built through hard and good times, and she does not quit when things get rough. Her children respect her for her kindness and firmness. She tries to spend time with her children and be there for their school and extracurricular activities. KNOWLEDGEABLE WOMEN Besides virtue and other character qualities, they say that a woman of substance also has knowledge. About what? About makeup or hairstyles? No, knowledge of what is happening around her. Knowledge about current issues. She will know about crises and concerns within her city, state, nation and the world. And she would also want to actively participate in everything that she can in order to help. In fact, you can go on and on about the woman of substance. It is not an easy act to follow; it is not easy to become one, but then if you are one, you are blessed. You are the one!

One way or the other...

Hooked

By Priya Arunkumar He greets me every morning. We don’t talk much, but a customary nod or a wave of hand would always be there. Very unassuming and simple, he communicates with little English, Hindi and Kannada. He cleans my car every day. The two liners he always spoke would be about my car, or the absence of the car. For the first time ever, two weeks back he came to meet me and said he had been away, but ensured someone else was there to clean my car. I nodded that I knew. Sorry I could not inform you in advance, I had to attend to some family troubles, hence was away... and I assumed he wanted money. What happened, I queried, all good with family I hope. My son has cancer on the backbone, he went on with an ease that put me to shame. Cancer? How old is your son? 17 years, was in his first year in college when he suddenly got paralysed. He always complained of backache and we thought it was just malnutrition or strain. He had to cycle a long way to college. We didn’t attend to his back pain earlier; we are not very educated madam. We thought it was ordinary pain and applied some medicinal oils and home remedies. Was studying? Does it mean he is at a hospital or something...? No madam, he died last month. I hate getting in to these situations where I am at a loss of words. It is okay when you lose an argument, but when you face a person who has lost much bigger things in life, you are left with nothing, not even silence. I am sorry, is there any way I can help?

Don’t worry madam, I am okay. He once again smiled at me and said, madam it is better he died; he was paralysed on the bed for over 5 months. It is very hard to see your young son in bed in pain, dying slowly. It is better that he died; at least we don’t have to see him paralysed. His life had come to a standstill, so had ours. I earn very little madam, but I still try to save up as much as I can and send money to my family. I have one more son, he is in school and I hope he will grow up, study well, get a good job and take care of the family. We are ordinary people madam; we accept what life gives us, happiness or sorrows. We have no choice nor do we have the capacity to fight and change God’s will or destiny. It was painful to listen to him or see him smile only because he was simple and there was no drama. He just stated what came to his mind, and did not expect anything from me. Not even sympathy. His conversation switched to the tyre marks on the side of my car instantly without any change of topic or a dramatic pause. Take care where you park your car madam, I think someone grazed the tyre on your car. He waved his hand and scurried away with the bucket of water to the next car! Driving back to office, I could not take my mind away from him or his statement. Life has taught him the maturity to accept things and events, while many of us don’t! All of us are ordinary people; rich or otherwise! Money power is not going to make us anything special. Only difference is we do not accept things as they come. We believe our money, status, power could make a difference, change our way of living, in fact complicate the life process, which otherwise would have been simple and easy! All of us, no matter who we are, pay in one way or the other. priya@blackandwhiteoman.com
