Devonport News
Devonport Community News for this month with Nigel Bioletti, Trust Manager, Devonport Peninsula Trust
From the Peninsula
Nigel Bioletti.
The Trust welcomes Anne McMillan to the Board. Anne is an integral member of the Restoring Takarunga Hauraki community, giving this programme many hours of her voluntary time. Anne will bring a wealth of experience to the Board table.
Welcome also to Melissa Powell, who is now the Local Board representative for the Trust. Trustees very much value the connection this enables with the Local Board which funds the Trust each year.
Recent Events:
Abby’s first big event – the Bayswater Halloween Trail on 28th October was a real success, with approximately 2,500 people attending and the weather holding for the evening. It was fantastic to see so many families all dressing up. A number of groups contributed to the success of the event, but special thanks go to the Devonport Lions Club who helped set up and pack down, and to Navy chefs and Community Liaison personnel who provided and cooked about 900 sausages (with onions!)
Tikanga Wananga – Chairperson Iain Rea and I have enjoyed attending the lunchtime Tikanga Māori Wananga, facilitated by Terehia Walker, supported by her husband, Ngahiwi. Terehia’s generosity in providing this opportunity for peninsula community organisation leaders is very much appreciated. The sessions are based in real contexts; one recent session discussed the tikanga involved in the use of Māori musical instruments. Each session has been very enjoyable and worthwhile.
Community Network Meeting – Mel Powell attended this final meeting of the year, and talked about her earlier years, her whanau, her work with Ngā Rangatahi Toa, her new role on the Devonport Takapuna Local Board, and the financial constraints Local Boards are facing.
Remembrance Day, Devonport Ceremony - I was able to support the ceremony with sound equipment. Organised by Devonport RSA president Muzz Kennet, it was a very well set up event, and along with bands, organisation representatives and military personnel, involved Takapuna Grammar Student Gavin Wu who delivered the address, a choral group who sang ‘Te Aroha’ very well, and Milla RodriguesBirch who sang ‘God Save the King’ – again, very well.
Coming Up:
Folk in the Park on 12th February - Abby is working with the Devonport Folk Music Club to set up this traditional summer event.
Continuing:
Raumati/Summer Tamariki Play sessions at 9:30am on Tuesdays at Windsor Reserve and on Thursdays at the Belmont Rose Gardens. A wonderful opportunity for parents, grandparents, caregivers and children to share play activities and to meet others. On fine summer mornings these sessions are pretty special. Free. Team up, come along.
