NEED TO PLACE NEW AD!

Editorial 3

Friday, April 1

Editorial: SAT sucks away spring break freedom inconsiderate thing to tell to a bunch of over-worked, over-stressed students. Not only that, but after having a week off from school, exhausted students need a couple days to readjust to the school schedule. What they don’t need is to be thrown into a test that determines which colleges they can attend and how much of their education can be paid for through scholarship opportunities. According to Rachel Evans, the LHS academic coordinator, the SAT day was not set when the school calendar was configured. However, she said that in years prior, SAT testing day has been the second week in April, rather than immediately after spring break.

One would think that the board in charge of scheduling the entire year would look at the day that the SAT had been administered in years prior and consider the test to be more important than the weather in August versus June. Supposedly, nothing can be done in order to have LHS administer the test a different day. This is because April 12 is SAT day nationwide and throughout the state of Idaho. In addition, the State of Idaho has already signed contracts agreeing to administer the test before April 12, according to Evans. The reason other schools are not having scheduling conflicts with the national date is because most all schools have their spring

P

Spring break -- a time for students to relax and unwind, a break from education, right? Nope. Wrong. In an assembly in February LHS administration explained that students SAT day would be none other than the day after students return from spring break, April 11. Many students have expressed taking personal offense to this kind of scheduling for this important testing day. At the informative assembly administrators told worried students that they should utilize their spring break by doing test preparations such as work on Kahn Academy online -- because that is what every single student wants to spend their spring break doing. That’s an extremely

breaks weeks beforehand, Evans said. LHS has one of the latest spring breaks. A logical solution would be to just move spring break a few weeks earlier but some administrators and teachers disagree, saying breaks in the middle of curriculum disrupt learning and make retaining the information difficult. However, LHS appears to have no issues in taking breaks in the middle of curriculum. The LHS winter break is twice as long as spring break and happens a mere month before semester finals, while other schools in the valley end the semester when Christmas break begins. Of particular note, many of the scheduling changes for the current school year

happened because many families wanted to use the last week in August 2015 as vacation time, Evans said. Generally, students want to thrive and succeed at the SAT to better ensure a more secure future for colleges and scholarship opportunities. But the question is, do those in charge of the academic calendar want the same for students? It certainly doesn’t appear so. Definite changes need to occur when it comes to the school calendar. A three-day weekend in August does not and should not outweigh a test in April that students need to do their absolute best on. As it is, many students feel as if they are being tested on a day that sets them up for failure.

Bacon Bits: Students see tardy policies as unfair jaceybacon opinioneditor

When a student is late to class there could be many factors that influence that tardy. Perhaps a car wouldn’t start. Maybe there was a traffic jam because of a car accident, or treacherous driving conditions. Or maybe a student made an honest mistake and forgot to set an alarm for the right time. Young adults should be taking responsibility for their actions and treating their education like a job in the real world. But a high school student is often under the age of 18, so parents should still have a sense of control over their lives. This is why in the event that a student is late to school and a parent contacts the schools to let the faculty know the circumstances, this absence should be excused and the student should not be punished. It is ridiculous to tell a

student to spend lunch time in detention for a week because of a simple mistake that set back the morning for an hour. If this missed time in school is so precious. then why aren’t kids who miss a whole day of school, with no explanation as to why, not punished? If a student wakes up late for school, we may not want detention and decide to skip the whole day to avoid punishment. Skipping four classes of instruction seems much worse than missing one hour. In some cases a student who has served lunch detention may not even want to eat lunch the last 15 minutes of the period because many students go out to eat instead of spending money on mediocre school food. Many students want to take their lunch time to talk to friends or crunch in some study time. Making these kids spend half of their lunch in detention is denying them the basic rights

that all high schoolers should be able to enjoy. Another example of unfair and absurd tardy policies at LHS is the policy which makes a student who walks into class late stay after school for 15 minutes and count off the seconds. This could be a fair punishment if the student is late for no reason and interrupts the teacher’s lesson, but when a student walks in before anyone has acknowledged the beginning of class they should at least be given the opportunity to explain the situation and apologize for any inconvenience. When a teacher denies the student this chance to defend themselves it is rude and downright disrespectful. It is incredibly insulting to punish a student with out giving them the chance to apologize. Another aspect of this that many find insulting is that some students can walk into class 10 minutes late and

the teacher will be OK with this because that particular student has some unfortunate circumstance. This is ludicrous considering that the student who is receiving punishment for almost nothing could have a valid explanation but is not able to get a word in with the instructor. If a student is going to have their integrity questioned every morning then what is the point of showing up to class? Throwing out punishments for no reason is hostile and makes the learning environment unwelcoming, which makes it much harder for students to connect with the lessons. Why do teachers think it is OK to give unnecessary punishments for things that the school is already prepared to handle? Most importantly, if schools are supposed to prepare students for the real world then why are some students’ petty excuses and unfortunate circumstances

Can we talk about... kinseyrichardson editorinchief

considered while others are not respected enough to give an apology? News flash, the world doesn’t care how “unfortunate” life is and a boss won’t care if you are 30 seconds late. The world will care if you are able to defend yourself and apologize when you are in the wrong. So, the next time anyone tells you to stop defending yourself swallow your tongue, and prepare an argument, because you deserve respect just as much as anyone else.

Students crushed under pressure of college

Kinsey Richardson

Several recent radio ads and internet articles say that teens won’t ever go to college if they don’t start right after high school. As high school students, people often ask, “What are your plans after high school?” And often we don’t have an answer. According to idahoednews.

org, 52 percent of Idaho high school graduates do attend college the fall following graduation. But that means 48 percent of Idaho teens don’t go to college. Some join the military and some are working, trying to save money. Some genuinely don’t know what they want to do with their lives and aren’t ready to commit to the cost of college Society as a whole needs to be OK with that, to stop the stigma that teens will be failures if they don’t want to attend a university. A study conducted by Huffington Post found that 78 percent of people in the U.S. go to college by the age

of 20. And 88 percent attend by age 26. One’s future depends on a person’s attitude. If a person wants to succeed, he or she will. Teens don’t need to listen to the negative voices in life saying they won’t make it, because that won’t get a person anywhere. Say it now: “I am not a statistic. I will not fail.” Each high school graduate is their own person and no one can predict how life will work out. The people telling teens to go to college right away are most likely twice their age. These people, although they say they understand what teens are going through, really don’t understand the

struggles of being a college student in the 21st century. In the 1980s when many Millennials’ parents were going to school, tuition costs were much cheaper than they are now. According to forbes.com, college tuition in 1986 was around $10,000 per semester. Now it costs $26,000-plus to attend the same colleges. So although they understand the struggles of finances and such, many adults don’t understand this generation’s personal struggle. It’s much harder to receive financial aid in this day and age, and also much harder to pay off student loans. The struggle is very, VERY real. If a high school graduate

really isn’t ready for college, that’s OK. College can happen later. For now, it is a reasonable option for a new graduate to work and save money, to travel the world, to live without having to worry about homework. To not worry what friends are doing. Yeah, friends might end up moving away while others don’t, and maybe not even going to college at all. that’s how life works and that’s how people evolve and grow. Students need to do whatever it may be that is best for themselves. The collective student body is not here to be a miserable slave to society.

Friday, April 1 Sports 5 Athletes’ moms steal court to play ball for Safe and Sober haileysorenson sportseditor

Students’ moms once again took the court from their kids to play a furious yet amusing basketball game as the season closed Thursday, March 10. Known as the Battle of the Moms, this year's Safe and Sober graduation party fundraiser, remained as entertaining as previous years. “We’re supposed to play by basketball rules, but that doesn't really happen,” said Angie Stamper, mother of LHS senior Dalton Stamper . From the beginning, it was easy to see the fun, light and laugh-inducing air surrounding the game. It began with the introductions of each of the players with their respective child. Those introductions ranged from complicated handshakes to doing the splits or giving hugs and high fives. Each group had its own special action to accompany its introduction. During the introductions,

the mic relentlessly cut out, making for an even more memorable night as the audience and players alike tried to understand the unfortunate announcer. However, the announcer was a good sport about it even though this problem persisted through the entire game, matching the hilarity and goofiness of the rest of the event. Even with the all the mic issues, the game continued without interruption. The teams were divided in a simple way, with each matched with its own colored t-shirts -- yellow shirts for the girls basketball moms, gray for boys basketball moms, black for the cheer moms and purple for mothers of wrestlers. Despite being called a basketball game, Battle of the Moms couldn't be any further from that. “It’s called basketball but there are no rules,” said Jill Ralstin, mother of senior Alyssa Ralstin. Any rules that survived

quickly disappeared as referees and people running the score table received bribes of both money and candy. “A 2- or 3-pointer shot could really be five points if we bribe the score table enough,” said Stamper. The basketball and wrestling moms played against

each other, but they didn’t steal all the glory. Cheer moms fired the crowd up from the sidelines, with somewhat varying motives. “Our whole goal is to embarrass our children,” said Laurie Glessner, mother of senior Dawson Murphy. However, the moms’ over-

all reason for playing was to support the seniors and their graduation party this spring. In coming years, seniors said they can hope this tradition will continue and that attendance will increase so more people can experience the fun that is the Battle of the Moms.

LHS brings in new track coach Baseball fights against rainy start haileysorenson sportseditor

graceeller sportsreporter

The baseball season was scheduled to start March 14, but due to the rain was postponed to March 17 when they played a doubleheader against Walla Walla and swept the series. The score for the first game was 8-7, according to the Lewiston Tribune. The Bengals were behind 6-3 before working together to pull ahead by scoring five runs, and staying in the lead. Going into the second

game the Bengals were ahead 13-0, until the fifth inning when the Blue Devils got 12 runs. “We played well, a few early errors but everything went as planned. I think we hit well early and had a good confidence level through it all,” said Jake Munoz, center fielder. With two previous wins under their belts, the Bengals walked into the game March 19 against Sandpoint, and won 11-1. The March 22 game, against Clarkston High School was canceled due to rain.

This season the Bengal track team welcomes a new head coach into its ranks. Colin Briggs, former track player at University of Idaho for five years, replaces Keith Stuffle in the position of head coach for this year's track team. According to the Lewiston Tribune, Stuffle coached at LHS for 10 years, making Briggs the third track coach at LHS in 29 years, “I love track and field,” said Briggs. “It’s my passion.”

As of this season, Briggs is hoping to be able to stay for the long haul and stay as head coach. “Nothing is for sure because each year is a new year,” said Briggs, “but as of now [I’ll stay] for as long as the school district will have me.” Immediately following the start of the official track season, Briggs had numerous changes to how the practices proceeded, for better or worse. “I’m not sure how the system worked last year so everything [the track players] see may be new,” said Briggs. “[But] last year was great and capitalizing on

the district championship will be key.” Some players, especially seniors, expressed some skepticism as to how Briggs has run the season so far. They don't think he is a substandard coach, many said, but they all know he has big shoes to fill this season. With the season still being fairly young, there are still a few questions as to how the season will go. Yet this doesn’t diminish Briggs’ optimism and hopes for the team. “I know what this team is capable of and I’m looking forward to a great track season.”

Extreme Ironing: (Pictured to the right)

Gurning: (Pictured above) In a nutshell, gurning is to contort one's face to create a unpleasant or “ugly” appearance. In the gurning championship, people compete to make the ugliest face. According to an article detailing the history of the championship at benrussell.photoshelter. com, the origins of the gurn-

ing competition itself are unclear, and may not be so old, although it was described as an ancient tradition by the Cumberland Paquet, a newspaper, in 1852. A rule of thumb for those competing is that the less teeth one has, the more ugly the face. (This is because the jaw can move more freely with less teeth to contest with.)

According to the Official Extreme Ironing website, basically, the contestant takes an ironing board to a remote, or “extreme” location and irons a piece of clothing. Venues can and have included the deepsea, on top of a tall cliff, at the back end of a helicopter, in the middle of a cave, on a hang glider and on the back of a taxi cab.

Seepak Takraw:

According to the official Sepaktakraw website, this sport got its start in 16th century Thailand, and is often described as a spectacular blend of volleyball, football, martial arts and gymnastics.

Unicycle Football:

According its website, Unicycle Football is exactly as it sounds. It is American football played entirely on unicycles. Competitors play a 5 on 5 "flackle" (flag/ tackle) game with slightly different rules to accommodate the unicycles.

Cardboard Tube Fighting: Cardboard tube fighting is something that many people are guilty of doing at one point or another. Who doesn’t remember picking up some random object, whether it was a few markers or the cardboard part of a paper towel roll, and fighting with them? This is exactly what it sounds like

-- fighting with cardboard tubes. According to the thenerdmachine.com,, there is one simple rule -- don’t break a tube. The first tube to break loses. However, it isn’t as simple as it sounds. Players can’t use their own bodies and they can’t jab or lunge with the tube. Hits to the face are also frowned upon.

Zorbing:

Like the view? Imagine being in the place of the worms while being forced out of thier cozy homes by people vibrating it. This is what it looks like. Photo courtesy of stufftoblowyourmind.com.

Worm Charming: (pictured above)

Essentially, the contestant coaxes worms out of the ground. The ways that is achieved is through vibrations, be it music, a garden fork, or any other means of generating vibrations. The person who

collects the most worms wins. According to the World Worm Charming website, the competition was founded in 1980 as a fundraising event incorporated into the local school system in Nantwich, Cheshire in England.

Some people have possibly known this sport to exist already, but that doesn't make it any less weird or interesting. The premise of the sport is simple -- get in a ball and roll down a hill. Faster time means higher placing.

Chess Boxing:

According to the World Chess Boxing Organization, this sport combines the unlikely sports of chess and boxing into one game. The competition revolves around an 18-minute chess game interrupted by five 3-minute rounds of boxing. In order to win, the player must be skillful in both chess and boxing.

Goanna Pulling: (Pictured above)

According to topendsports. com, Goannas are Australian lizards, but this event does not involve pulling these little creatures. The event gets its name from the fact that the participants look like

the goannas when taking part in this competition. The event requires two people to face each other with a heavy leather strap joining them around their necks, then they pull each other in this special version of tugof-war.

Tennis season opened March 12, but due to a cancellation of games, J.V.’s season was delayed. Varsity’s first game on March 12 at LHS was also cancelled for weather, but its second game that same day started the season off against Pullman at home. “I feel as though [the cancellations] really take away from our practice. Due to the fact that our first game matches were supposed to set us up for what’s to come,”

said sophomore J.V. player Olivia Crickmon. “We have a tournament on Saturday [March 26], and we haven’t even played a regular match.” The length of the season will vary for the two teams. Varsity will first work toward the Capital Classic tournament in Boise on April 29 and 30. J.V. will play its final game on May 9. Varsity players expect to play at Regionals May 13 and 14, with the location still to be determined. Those who qualify for state will compete in Weippe, Idaho, at Timberline High School May 20 and 21.

Underclassmen at state were juniors Blake Callahan (160 lbs.), Justin Chase (285 lbs.), Cody Cromer (182 lbs.), Colton Jones (126 lbs.), Trevan Pixley (195 lbs.) and Kaleb Tipton (132 lbs.), along with sopho-

more Mitch Miller (220 lbs.). Hendren, being the only Bengal to place in the top six, finished in third place for the tournament. “I thought of it as just another tournament, just another match, just another weigh in -- last weigh in,” Hendren said.“I took it moment by moment, match by match, and ended up getting where I was.” “Finally placing at state, it’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was in 8th-grade wrestling at [Sacajawea Jr. High],” Hendren added. “It’s just, it’s one of my biggest things, and finally being able to do it my senior year and winning my last match of my

high school career was amazing.” Hendren advises his underclassmen teammates to never take wrestling for granted. Once it’s over, it’s over, and they’re going to wish they had it back, he said. Hendren acknowledged his former coach, Dan Maurer, who stepped down three seasons ago, and wanted to thank him for being one of his greatest mentors in the wrestling community. “He just knew exactly what to say, and exactly what to do. He knew everything. He’s by far the best coach I’ve ever had,” elaborated Hendren.

Weather delays softball season graceeller sportsreporter

The softball season was scheduled to start March 12 when the teams were to take on Lakeland High School in Lakeland. When the rain started falling and never stopped they were forced to cancel both the JV and varsity games. Two days later when the teams returned to school, Monday, March 14,

expecting to start their season off again against Moscow, they received the same disappointing news that the games were canceled due to wet fields. March 19th the Bengals took on Sandpoint in a double header, for their season opening game. The Bengals were tied when they took charge and and scored one more run than Sandpoint, ended up winning 4-3. “Yeah they gave me a heart

attack on that last run, a 4-3 win over Sandpoint with a pretty good pitcher, it was tied 3-3 and they pulled out there at the end and really came through” said Coach Young, after they won. In the second game the Bengals were not so lucky, with a 13-12 loss to the Bulldogs in the seventh ending. The March 22 game against Clarkston was canceled, due to rain.

SAT redesigned this year LHS recieves donation jonikaringling newseditor

The SAT is new and redesigned for the class of 2017 to take this spring. The new SAT consists of only four academic sections and an essay, while the old SAT consisted of 10 different sections that were much shorter in length. The sections include math without the use of a calculator, math with the use of a calculator, reading, and writing and language. The essay is optional for the new SAT but on the official SAT day at LHS, April 12, all students will write the essay, according to Rachael Evans, the LHS academic coordinator. According to Collegeboard. org the test was redesigned because, “The world needs more people who can solve problems, communicate clearly, and understand complex relationships. The SAT Suite of Assessments focuses on the skills and knowledge that will help today’s students meet that need.” The tests are designed to: • Measure the essential ingredients for college and career readiness and success, as shown by research. • Have a stronger connection to classroom learning. • Inspire productive practice. The new SAT holds no penalty for guessing on questions. Camille Lame donated $6,000 to the students of LHS March 22 to fund the creation of the new L on the Lewiston Hill in memory of her son Phil Lame. Her husband Warren Lame graduated from LHS in 1941 and was part of the first group that started the L on the hill. He went on to serve in World War II and teach math at LHS at Sacajawea Junior High. Their eldest son Phil Lame followed in his father’s footsteps to

also teach math at LHS. He was the senior class adviser and was very involved with the L on the Hill. In 2001, he was named Lewiston School District teacher of the year. Phil Lame passed away in 2010 at age 62. According to LHS Librarian Mary Ann Funk, who first received word of the donation, one request Camille Lame had was, “You kids get busy right away getting that L on the hill because I am 91 years old and I want to see it completed.”

The state competition has many events, including knowledge tests on medical terminology and nutrition, tri-board displays on health careers and debates on topics such as biological medicine. One HOSA member, LHS senior Zach Coppess, will participate in the extemporaneous writing event, where he will have one hour to write in depth on a topic with no prior

preparation. Along with state competitions, the HOSA club has other events throughout the year. With Tuesday meetings starting in the fall, the club participates in activities such as community service and fundraising. In the past, HOSA students have made blankets for nursing home residents and have partnered up with the local health department to help spread health awareness throughout the school and community, according to HOSA adviser Debbie Wassmuth. Additional information on the HOSA club can be found at hosa.org.

College visits planned casswilliamson copyeditor

For students who are looking for information on colleges and scholarships, LHS counselors have many events planned for the upcoming months. One such event is the sophomore trip to Lewis-Clark State College April 12 in Lewiston. A total of 400 sophomore students will be split into two groups, with one going to the campus at 8:15 a.m., and the other going at 10:30 a.m. The day will consist of meeting Soo Lee Bruce-Smith, Office of New Student Recruitment Director at LCSC, along with an enrollment presen-

tation, a division session, and a tour of the campus. After the first group has gone through all of the rotations, those students will return to LHS, and group two will replace them. In addition to the college trips, a number of scholarships are available, with amounts ranging from $400 in the Chrystal Becker Memorial Music Scholarship, to $12,000 in the State of Idaho Scholarships Governor’s Challenge. Additional information and applications can be found in the counseling center. Specific scholarship information can be found on the counselors’ web page, or on the counseling center’s Facebook page.

BREAKING NEWS -- One of the greatest rappers of all time, Tupac Shakur, was found alive this spring in Viuda Island, a resort island in Peru almost 20 years after he was pronounced dead Sept. 13, 1996. In an exclusive interview with The Bengal’s Purr, Shakur explained how he survived the shooting 20 years ago. “I was just out and about in Vegas, but they didn’t show me the same love California did,” Shakur said. ” I was on my way back from the MGM hotel on the Vegas strip with my good friend Biggie Smalls.” He was very choked up when asked who shot him the night of Sept. 13, 1996. “Biggie and I got over our disputes, and I trusted him when he said to invite Suge Knight, so I hit him up,” Shakur said.“Right when Suge answered the phone Biggie whispered in my ear, ‘I ain’t mad at’cha.’ Then the bullet went straight

into my heart.” For people who wonder how he survived, Shakur gave a very simple and tothe-point answer. “After the tragic day when I got shot I knew rap was about to go downhill, so I had an ambition that I had to ride or fly to Peru to give other MCs a chance so the culture could see some changes,” he explained. “Surviving the shooting was nothing. I’ve b e e n s h o t f o u r times before and survived so I mean, what’s seven shots going to do to me?” What

Shakur said makes a lot of sense considering that his great frenemy Biggie passed away a year after his own death. Peru seemed like a rural and weird place to decide to live. Shakur explained his living conditions as well as why he chose Peru to run off to. “Again, when I got on the plane to secretly fly to Peru, I wasn’t worried about the blood coming out of my heart,” Shakur said. “I was worried about finding out who I was. I felt like it was me against the world at that point.” I chose Peru

and the Island of Viuda because it’s where all the dead celebrities go to live. Me and my man Elvis shared a room for the longest time before he passed in 2014 I was excited to see Biggie a year later squashed our beef officially because life goes on and we have unconditional love for each other.” Not only is it crazy to find out that Shakur is alive and well on the streets of LA, showing his California love, but it turns out thatcelebrities who were thought to be gone are actually on the Island of Viuda in Peru. “Yeah, all of them are there. Biggie’s still over there. Michael Jackson was a thrill to have at the island, and Whitney Houston as well as David Bowie, who influenced me to come back to my rapping ways.” This is going to go down as one of the most significant days in modern American history as Tupac is back and reveals that other beloved music figures are also in hiding.

In addition, the platforms will feature built-in computer systems that will contain an archive of workouts. Many students are sad that games are disappearing like King of the Platform and Hot Lava, a game where a student must try and remain balanced on their platform without falling off into the “lava.” Other downsides do exist. The man who shoves all the students in the weight room and locks the door is

now unemployed. With the new technology and space, the LHS student rate of fitness should be on the rise, and Michelle Obama can’t take joy in making students eat disgusting low-calorie cafeteria food any longer. Meanwhile, the elderly community plans to take a day’s break from knitting their granddogs sweaters in order to picket construction of the new room. “Property tax is already too dang high,” said 71-year-old retiree Edna Imaginary. to face six hours of homework that night. That leaves the average student with five hours of free time excluding procrastination time which can take about four hours of homework time away before going to bed at 2 a.m., or midnight at the earliest. A student with a part-time job can lose up to three hours in addition to procrastination time.

“I have too much time every night to relax. I am so bored that I go to bed at 6 p.m.,” said Sally Smith, junior, “I need something more to do! Preferably homework.” Statistics show that 1000 percent of students have too much free time during the week to do what they enjoy and to hang out with friends. Honestly, all students want to do these days is homework.

Many controversies reside over our next U.S. president and who it should be. One of the most notorious presidential candidates is Republican, Donald Trump. Some people think he’s a terrible human being and that he may have “questionable morals.” Bottom line is he is awesome and here is why: Donald Trump is probably one of the most kind people one would ever encounter. Trump has never made racist comments towards a n y o n e , h e treats e v e r y o n e equally and he is incredibly welcoming to immigrants. Donald Trump knows what it feels like to need help. Before he got on his own two feet, his immigrant father gave him a small loan of $1 million, making him a very humble man who

needed to work for his success. The man’s plans to build a dividing wall between Mexico and America makes complete, logical and ethical sense. Spending millions of America’s tax dollars to seperate us from “dangers” really is a well thought out plan of a true businessman. Respect - one word that describes Trump so perfectly. He really knows how to treat a woman, he’s notoriously treated his ex wives

and other females in multiple extraordinary manners. The way he treats women perfectly exemplifies the way they should be treated. He is also a wonderful father figure, providing appropriate funds and letting the mother take over the nurturing, even paying attention to how beautiful his daughters Ivanka and Tiffany are. His views are obviously widely spread, as he has millions of dedicated followers. Trump really was spot on when he mentioned that even if he was to shoot a person he would still be elected. He could become a religious leader if he wanted due to his beliefs and the great role model that he is. Honestly the man could even start a cult of radical Trump supporters, they could spread the power of Trump’s words, making America great again.

Project Guzman results in phenomonal success annabelleady

entertainmentreporter

English projects are viewed as boring by many students because there is not much room for self-expression. But LHS English teacher Ricky Guzman has found a way to change that within his classroom by giving students the chance to express themselves artistically while still giving them the chance to meet guidelines. This spring, students in Guzman’s sophomore English class at LHS read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and choose their own projects based on the book. The options were: short answer exam, cartoon strip, mobile/ collage, CD or playlist, song/ rap/poem, character dialogue or to write an alternate ending to the novella. To Guzman’s surprise, even with all of the creative projects as an option, a number of students still chose the exam. However, students who chose other

options produced alternate endings to the story, ranging from collages to music playlists. Catherine Wen, junior and exchange student from Taiwan, used watercolor to paint an image of the book’s main characters, Lenny and George. Guzman said he was blown away by her artwork. Wen, who received art training in Taiwan, originally wanted to sketch instead of painting with watercolor. But when she saw the online screenshot of Lenny and George from the movie, Wen said that “the picture made me emotional.” Wen describes her painting style as “mass,” meaning a lot of colors. When asked what she liked about this project she said that she liked it all. “It was beautiful! It showcased this student’s talent while demonstrating her genuine engagement with the text,” said Guzman. He plans on framing it for display for an example for future students.

Catherine Wen’s painting depicts George and Lenny from the novel Of Mice and Men for a project in Ricky Guzman’s English class.

Along with the exam, the most popular project students chose was a collage. Guzman said he believes that students should have a

say in how they are assessed. Guzman plans on doing this project again based on how well students responded. His advice for students on

future projects is, “Break free of conventions. Have fun. Be creative. Take a chance -- you never know what you might come up with.”

eSight video glasses. The glasses, with the help of small magnetic computers, help visually enhance everything around him. “They [eSight glasses] don’t correct vision. I’m completely blind in my right eye. It doesn’t help that,” said Thomasson in response to how the glasses work. “But in my left eye my vision is 2600. With the glasses it’s 20/25 -- a huge enhancement.” The computer snaps onto a pair of glasses Thomasson wears. The glasses will take some getting used to, around a year until they’re fully comfortable. If overworn, the glasses cause motion sickness and headaches. “I wear them all the time at home. I just take awhile

to get used to them,” said Thomasson. “I wore them to [see] Anything Goes. It was awesome!” The Thomasson family discovered the eSight glasses online. The glasses were obtained through donations from the community. Drew is currently going through “training” to wear the glasses full time. The device has really opened his eyes, Thomasson said. “I found out my dog is fat,” he responded when asked about any surprising sights. “Seeing my friends’ faces was the best thing.” The eSight glasses also provide something that many people with typical eyesight wish they could have: Cameras built into the eyes.

“My favorite part is that they have a built-in camera so I can take a photo and it just saves it to the bluetooth chip,” said Thomasson. His newfound sight will continue to positively influence his life with his upcoming radio segment on KLCZ and his greatest current goal: Graduating with his class in June. “My plan is to walk with them on stage during graduation,” Thomasson said. “Only two more months.” With all the help from the community and kids at school, Thomasson said he wants to express his gratitude. “A BIG thanks to the community and the school, everyone who donated.”

A: All of the studying strategies I use seem to work just fine, although I hope to improve on them as much as I can. Q: HOW IN THE WORLD do you keep them straight? A: I don’t know how I keep them straight, my brain just kind of sorts them out. Sometimes I mix up Hebrew and Arabic verbs, due to how similar they are. Q: I can barely speak Spanish, and I’m taking it because it’s required for out-of-state college. Is that what got you interested in language? Because you had to take it in high school? A: I started taking Spanish to get into college, but this last summer I started studying German and Hebrew. Q: Were you bilingual before deciding to learn more? A: I didn’t start studying any language until my freshman

year. So, no. Q: What is your favorite thing about learning all these languages? A: My favorite thing about all of this is being able to connect with so many other people, even if it is just me attempting broken Russian over Skype. Knowing other languages means understanding a totally different culture, and a differ-

ent way of thinking. Q: What is most interesting or unusual about learning different languages? A: I would say something really important that everyone should know is that you can learn and study any language! You don’t need a physical classroom setting -- the internet is just as good of a source!

Jake Baker is 17 years old and a junior at LHS. He is Lewistonborn and is native to the English language. Though lately, he has been expanding his vocabulary by six more languages. To anyone hearing about this, it seems like quite the challenge, but to Baker, this difficult task is manageable, and even fun. Q: What foreign languages are you learning? A: German, Hebrew, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, and Japanese. I plan on studying Xhosa and Bengali this upcoming summer. Q: Is there any significance behind each or do you just think they sound cool? A: I’m learning German and Hebrew because I’m German and Jewish. I’m learning Russian, Arabic, etc. because I have friends native to those languages. I’d also like to visit countries which speak those languages.

Q: What are you doing to learn each one? A: I use a lot of things such as YouTube, online classes, foreign friends and Netflix, although I learn a lot in my German class. Q: How far are you in learning each one? A: I’d say I excel most in German and Hebrew. A tier down would be Russian and Arabic, and the ones I need most practice on are Mandarin and Japanese. Q: Which is the easiest to learn? A: I’d say the easiest to learn is probably German, because English is a Germanic language. Q: Which is the hardest to learn? A: Mandarin and Japanese are probably the most difficult, due to having to learn specific characters for each word. Q: Do you plan on becoming fluent in each language? A: I’d say becoming fluent in a language would take decades, if it’s not your mother tongue. I’d like to become advanced in

Nuxoll reaches thirteenth year in Girl Scouts kinseyrichardson editorinchief

What comes to mind with the words, “Girl Scouts”? Most likely, it’s what the Girl Scouts are notorious for, and that’s their delicious boxes of cookies. But in reality, the Scouts are much more. To one LHS senior, Lindsay Nuxoll, the Scouts have a much deeper meaning than cookies and patches. “Well, growing up I was bullied a lot. [Girl Scouts] gave me a safe haven,” Nuxoll said. Nuxoll first joined the Scouts when she was 5 years old, after wanting to be like her older sister and to be an older sister herself. Girl Scouts is for girls grades 2-12. According to girlscouts. org, girl scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. The girls get opportunities that might not have been previously offered to them such as camping and

fun trips with their troop. “I’ve gotten to make blankets for hospital patients, I’ve gotten to sing Christmas carols to veterans, I’ve gotten to send care packages overseas, and we’ve gotten letters back with pictures of soldiers crying,” Nuxoll said of her experiences. “It’s really the simple things in life that people don’t cherish, that’s what the Scouts mean.” Nuxoll also spoke of her few frustrations that come with the Scouts. “It’s a huge stigma that to be a Scout you have to be in elementary school,” said Nuxoll. “I go out on 12-hour cookie-sale days and people ask me, ‘Where are my girls at?’ as if I’m too old to be in the Scouts. But it wasn’t originally made for little girls.” Girl Scouts of America gives older girls in the troop the opportunity to receive scholarship money from every box of cookies sold. Fifty cents per box adds up, and Nuxoll said she had around $3,000 set

18 Entertainment Sophomore effort from The 1975 impresses tonymurillo entertainmenteditor

The 1975 may be fresh faces in the music world, but they’re already proving themselves as major players in the game. Their latest record, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, released Feb. 26, is sure to win more respect and fans. This record pushes the band forward by accomplishing many different things. The elements that made its selftitled debut record special in the hearts of many come back even stronger. The 1975’s style of alternative rock balances sounding ethereal and poppy. Both flavors combine again for one succulent treat. This is a dreamy record. The electronics, airy vocals and

mellow guitars make for a wonderful listen. Woven into the album’s lush soundscapes is catchy, accessible pop. The hooks here are a blast and never feel forced or cheap. I Like It When You Sleep contains some infectious earworms guaranteed to stay with the listener, such as “Love Me” and “The Sound.” Everything about this album shines bright. The instrumentation throws in things like brass, strings, keyboards and synthesizers. Adding to the diversity are a few instrumental tracks and an acoustic song, “She Lays Down.” The lyrics on this album also stand strong. They are honest and well-crafted, and establish the band’s voice. The heartfelt tune, “Nana”, includes the lyrical highlight, “I got my pen and thought that I'd write

a melody and line for you tonight. I think that's how I make things feel all right.” A 1980s tinge is present here. This gives the LP a retro vibe while remaining planted in contemporary youth. The ‘80s influences go a long way to add to the album’s life and longevity. I Like It When You Sleep is no sophomore slump, as it surpasses the band’s debut record. It is a cohesive effort full of color and personality. Members of The 1975 prove themselves to be a pop rock band that manages to be organic and full of heart. For this, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It earns an 8.5 out of 10.

Drama director presents sweet swan song

LHS Senior Shay Bonner sings in Anything Goes at LHS. Photo courtesy of S. Corbitt annabelleady entertainmentreporter

Longtime LHS drama coach Beth Atkinson directed her last play in the LHS auditorium, Anything Goes March 3-5 and 10-12. The performances showed that the cast is dedicated to making every performance bet-

ter than the one before it. Anything Goes is set in the 1930s on an ocean liner, the S.S. American, sailing from New York to London. Billy Crocker, played by junior Marshall Fisher, sneaks onto the ship with the help of Moon-

face Martin, played by sophomore Carl Snyder. Although the play was three hours long, and there were some slow parts, it was still enjoyable. The acting was engaging, as was the singing and dancing, and the plot was interesting. The set was well put together, with construction by students and painting by LHS art teacher, John Patterson. It was distracting, though, because of the bright white that it was painted, which was blinding when the stage lights were turned up. There was definitely some racism and sexual innuendoes tucked between songs, but that can be attributed to the play being set in 1930s America. Puns made by Billy, the eight angels and Moonface Martin were funny, but

otherwise it was easy to miss some of the jokes because the humor was a bit dry. The cast and crew put a lot of work into making the play as successful as it was. Notably, junior Jada Cortese, had an hour or two to learn all the parts of one of the Chinese converts due to another cast member’s illness. The cast was great because the characters fit their personalities. Standouts included juniors Tony Murillo, who played Sir Evelyn, and Fisher, who played Billy Crocker. Their personalities fit their characters’ parts well and made them believable, which was enjoyable to watch on stage. With assistance from Kim Haverfield, the costumes including hair and makeup were well put together. The tap-

based choreography was fun to watch and it was obvious that the actors put a lot of work into learning every step precisely. The best part of the play was watching the actors put their all in every single performance. Even with the somewhat dry humor and bright set, the actors still showed their skills and made the show enjoyable. With all that said, this production earn an 8/10.

In 2013, Kanye West dropped the album Yeezus on the world. Certified as platinum in the United States, it received critical acclaim and generated lots of buzz. Since then, West has remained in the spotlight with his zany antics, bold statements and attentiongrabbing tweets. He

amassed much more hype by beginning work on a new album that same year. Excitement has only grown as he has released its individual tracks on Soundcloud, put out singles and performed those new songs live. The hype for the forthcoming album never died, even as he frequently changed the album

title and track listing. Entering 2016, the wait was almost over. West delayed the album’s release, which only built the hype. This album appeared all over the media, generating truly impressive excitement. This spring the album is nearly here with its official release date and final title, The Life Of Pablo. The hype has all built up to this moment. However, West decided to make his album exclusive to the streaming service Tidal. Tidal costs $9 a month and $19 for the upper-tier subscription. Many have criticized this decision, as it makes the album harder access legally and has resulted in the album being pirated over 500,000 times. West acknowledged that he sits $53 million in debt. West even tweeted to Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg, asking for $1 billion. With West

struggling financially, it does not make sense to make his album exclusive to Tidal. It is also West’s first album not to chart on the U.S. Billboard 200, due to this unconventional release method. Even since its release, West changed one of the tracks on the album, leaving people to wonder if the current version is the final version. West also stated that he has no future plans to release the album outside of Tidal. If West were to release the album outside of Tidal, the impact of its arrival

wouldn’t be as large. The excitement for this album has already dropped quite a bit. As successful as West is, one cannot deny he made a large mistake with this album’s release.
