4 Unique exchange student says “adios” Friday, Dec. 15, 2017
By Sandra Kinney Co-Editor in Chief
On Jan. 25, 2017, Columbian exchange student, David Sierra-Gomez, joined the LHS family. Today, Dec. 15, 2017, LHS says goodbye to a student whose impact on this school will be remembered long after his departure. Sierra-Gomez is widely known
as a fun-loving foreign exchange student with an outstanding sense of humor. He has also achieved fame on Vine and Instagram, and is known in Columbia as a national volleyball player. He is full of star quality, and seems to broaden his horizons every day. With a mass of nearly 300,000 followers on Vine and 20,000 followers on Instagram, this Co-

lombian boy was well-known back in his home town. “People would often come up to me because they had seen me on Vine. They wanted to be my friend because I was popular, not because they wanted to get to know who I really was,” he said about Columbia. “That’s why it’s so nice here. People come up to me in the hallway just wanting a high-five

because they have seen me around, and I love that.” Sierra-Gomez’s first expectation upon arriving in Lewiston was that it was going to be one big potato farm. “I was afraid I would be spending a year milking cows and working on a farm,” he said. As time went on, however, Sierra-Gomez began to feel at home in this small town, and grew to love the people in it. “The people here are amazing” he said. “Everyone is so kind and welcoming. People want to get to know me for me.” Basketball games are also a pasttime that he will always remember. “When I got here, I got to go to the [Golden Throne game], and I had never experienced anything like that before,” he said of the annual basketball rivalry game between LHS and Clarkston High School. Sierra-Gomez’s school spirit shined through all year, and he participated in as many school events as he could. From football games to school dances, he tried to fully experience being an LHS Bengal. What he will miss the most about Lewiston, he said, is his host-family, the Hills.
“I’m really going to miss them. I love them a lot,” he said. The Hills said they feel the same way. “He is a son to me and will always be our family,” said Michelle Hill, his host-mother. “He made our wall. That means you are always a Hill.” Max Hill, an LHS senior, has been Sierra-Gomez’s host-brother, and had parting words for him as well. “He was the best brother I could ever ask for, and I hope that I see him in the future,” he said. Before leaving Lewiston, Sierra-Gomez shared that he also missed his family in Columbia. He is close with his older sister, and is excited to see her again. The pair plan to start their own YouTube channel when he gets back to document his travels around the world. “I want to travel and see the world, and I want to start doing that when I get back to Columbia,” he said. Upon his return to Columbia, Sierra-Gomez plans to start a new chapter in his life. He is going to a university in Columbia to study business administration and he is already building his own company online.

Friday, Dec.15, 2017 Entertainment 9 Top 10 tips for not dying at concerts LHS drama returns to compete after 30 years By Alexx Wren Features Assistant
Leckie’s original script rises to state finals By Eli Thomas Entertainment Assistant On Dec. 1 and 2 in Pocatello, Idaho, Lewiston High School Drama Club participated in state competition for the first time in more than 30 years. The group chose to compete this year because of a new drama adviser and a better financial situation. Zach Haas, Gracyn Richardson and Carl Snyder made it to the final round of the Serious Original category with Jessica Leckie’s original play “Addict.” The comedy, “A Typical Family
Robbery” by Haas, made it to the semifinals in the Humorous Original category. It featured Abby Myklebust, Aubrie Hunt, Leckie, Braeden Keane and Derek Renzelman. “I couldnt be happier with the results of our first competition,” said Melissa Syverson, drama adviser, in an email. “We were up against some very experienced schools and were one of only two schools that don’t have a full drama program and classes in their school.” They qualified to compete at state in a district competition Nov. 18 in Post Falls, Idaho.
After covering tons concerts in for the Vans Warped Tour, and on her own, here are just a few tips this writer has for a great concert experience. 1) Always have a phone charged for pictures and videos, as well as for after-concert safety. 2) It’s always good to have a small snack and lots of water, even if it’s not an outside venue. Concerts do get hot and there is the possibility of passing out. 3) Research the concert area and figure out where everything is, especially the exits.
For a venue like a Warped Tour setup, mapping it out beforehand means knowing where all the bands are and having a good experience.
4) If it is an indoor concert, wear light clothing. A jampacked area full of people pushing and jumping gets pretty warm. 5) Makeup is going to end up running from movement and heat, so to avoid looking like a raccoon, especially if there is a chance of meeting the band, wear lighter makeup. Wear appropriate shoes. 6) For hair, go for a messy or curly look. Messy curls look nice, but messy straight hair can be a wreck.
7) Take something for the band to sign in case meeting them becomes an option. A small journal or sketch book is a great choice for signatures from different concerts. 8) Take a small backpack or bag. With a small backpack, there’s no need to worry about dropping anything and it makes running, walking and dancing much easier. 9) If it is an outside concert, TAKE SUNSCREEN AND SUNGLASSES! 10) Lastly, Have fun! Don’t go to the concert worried or scared and just enjoy yourself! Merry List-Mas!
THE BENGAL’S PURR LHS, CHS combine to perform James and the Giant Peach

Senior Zach Haas (Ladahlord) tries to convince sophomore Caroline Gibbs (James) to indulge in “wild magic.” Photo by Leah Schmidt.
By Leah Schmidt Chief Copyeditor This winter the Lewiston and Clarkston high school drama departments combined for the third time and performed James and the Giant Peach, directed by Larry Goodwin and Melissa Syverson. For any who don’t know this classic tale written by Roald Dahl, it is about a boy named James Henry Trotter who must live with his two aunts after his parents are killed. His aunts, Spiker and Sponge, are very cruel and force James to work very hard around the house. Then one day, a giant peach begins to grow in their garden and many adventures follow James and the new friends he meets along the
way. The production opened Dec. 7 and stars LHS sophomore, Caroline Gibbs, as James. The musical numbers show precise choreography and well-blended vocal harmonies. The sets for the musical, although simple, look magical and captivating and create the sense of being right in the aunts’ backyard. This musical has it all. It makes audiences laugh, cry and feel all-around joy. An audience favorite is the song “Plump and Juicy” performed by junior, Josh Campbell-Ball from Clarkston. This tale of how humans and insects can come to live in harmony is truly heartwarming. Overall, it earns an
9 out of 10. The last chances to see this wonderful production are tonight, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m., and Dec. 16 at both 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 for adults at Clarkston High School.

Because of his success, Awaken, My Love! takes the first spot.
