Q’s with Katie: LHS says goodbye to the legendary Mrs. J Cynthia Johnson has been teaching at LHS for her entire career, 33 years, with the exception of one year spent on Whidbey Island. This year Johnson is retiring (or “graduating” as she likes to call it) alongside the class of 2017 after many years of influencing countless lives of her students. In her last month of teaching, she reflected on her career.

It’s where many get their first ah-ha moment in the connection of life

So for eight years I have traveled home on the weekends [Coeur d’Alene] and back to Lewiston for the weekdays. [My husband and I] have missed being together every day and that is what I plan on doing -- just being together.

SPORTS

2017 Bengal athletics officially come to end By Trevan Pixley Sports Editor

I’ve been participating and covering Lewiston Bengal sports since I was a sophomore, and now that I’m senior I must say that the 2016-2017 was my favorite year to do the job. Lewiston High School teams have experienced a roller coaster of emotions to say the least. During the 2016-2017 school year LHS saw some tremendous athletes rise up. Austin Byrer won Gatorade National Runner of the Year and a nomination for the North Idaho Cross Country award at the all-North Idaho sports awards event. Riley Way also made an impact on Lewiston athletics this year, being nominated for the Lewiston Tribune’s Prep Athlete of the Week for each of the three sports he participated in (football, basketball, baseball). Way committed to LCSC to play baseball. Other graduating seniors signed to continue athletics in college in a ceremony at LHS May 22. Football Beginning with the football season, the Bengals got off to a hot start defeating the Highland Rams for the first time in school’s history in a game Aug. 26 at the Ford Idaho Center. They also defeated Couer d’Alene in the pouring rain by a score of 5551. Quarterback Colton Richardson seemed like he couldn’t be stopped in the regular season throwing over 5,000 yards with only two interceptions, earning him the nomination for athlete of the year for North Idaho. Richardson wasn’t short of receivers to throw the ball to. Alex Light earned first team all state honors as a wide receiver after breaking 10,000 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. Fellow receiver Way

got picked for second team all-state as well. Kicker Lane Grant was also picked for second team all-state honors. Cross Country The Bengals Cross country team was led by Byrer and during that season he was named Gatorade Runner of the Year. In the state competition Byrer earned first place as an individual junior Joey Perez also placed high at ninth overall. The Bengals took fifth overall as a team at state. Volleyball Hannah Lien is going to play volleyball for the LCSC Warriors next fall after Lewiston’s volleyball team earned its place in the state tournament. The ladies losing their first game to Timberline but were able to go all the way to state through the back door, beating Boise and Lake City. They ended up playing the team they started the tournament against in the thirdand fourth-place games. Unfortunately the Bengals fell to them again in the third-place game. Basketball In basketball the Bengals showed flares of potential all the way through the season and the varsity boys placed third at state. This was the first time the Bengals placed at state for basketball since the boys won the title in 2008. The team showed great working chemistry with most of the starting five players having played together since childhood, when they first developed a love for basketball. LCSC basketball commit Trystan Bradley earned second team all-state in basketball as well. Fellow player Keeshawn Clarke will be playing for Walla Walla Community college to continue his sports career. The girls basketball team fell short of making the playoffs but did get a victory during

an intense Golden Throne rivalry event against Clarkston High School. The Lady Bengals earned a “four-peat” in January and took home the golden toilet. Wrestling As for the wrestlers, in the winter time 12 traveled to state, two more than last year. Kyle Cook, junior, placed sixth in the 170-pound weight class. The Bengal wrestlers will have six returning state competitors next year. Track and Field For track the Bengals ran very well, with the boys placing sixth overall as a team. Byrer continued to prove he’s one of the best athletes in this year’s senior class. Earlier in the season he beat the school’s longtime record for the 1,600 event. Byrer ran it in 4:13, only four seconds shy of an overall state record. Byrer placed fifth overall in the 800-meter event at state, placing second in the 1,600 and becoming a state champion in the 3,200-meter. Perez placed third in the 3200 for the Bengals as well. Unfortunately, no lady Bengal

runners placed in the top 5 in their events at state. Baseball Baseball is producing the most college athletes of any sports teams for Lewiston with five kids taking the game to the next level: Jackson Fuller, Jaden Phillips, Colton Sottlemyre, Riley Way and Luke White. In baseball this season the varsity team came in with high hopes, and earned itself the third seed overall in the first game of the state tournament it played against Capital High School in May. In this game the boys had a 2-0 lead at the top of the seventh inning. However a couple of walks, a costly error and loaded bases made the score 6-2 at the end of the top of the seventh, which became the end result of the game. The Bengals then went on to beat Madison in dominant fashion, 10-4. This advanced the Bengals to play in the third- and fourth-place game in which they lost to district rival Couer d’ Alene by a score of 5-2.

Softball The Bengals softball team had their fair share of struggles this year, only being able to capture three victories on the season and missing the state tournament. However catcher Brynann Carpenter will continue her career at Walla Walla Community College. Tennis In tennis this year, Gavin Hewett went to state as an individual. He did not place but will play tennis at Spokane Community College. Six Lewiston players entered the state tournament in May, but fell short of placing. However, Madelyn Parkey will continue her tennis career at Whitworth College. Golf For the boys team, only one golfer participated in the state tournament, which was Ben Trigsted. He fell short of placing at the tournament shooting a total score of 162. As for the girls, they unfortunately didn’t bring anyone to the state tournament.

Ringling Rings In: Judge yourself before others By Jonika Ringling Editor-in-chief

It’s hard to express one’s feelings when the response,

As we leave behind this chapter in our lives, we must remember and embrace the fact that all individuals are different and it’s not a bad thing. Individuality should be regarded as the most beautiful human quality. If it were, many more people would be a lot more comfortable in their own skin. Over 8 billion people inhabit Earth and every single person experiences the day differently than everyone else. No one handles situations the same way. No one feels emotions the same way. respectful of the pain one may be in. If someone is choosing to share you their problems with you, LISTEN. According to bullyingstatistics.org, “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year.” Sometimes the difference between someone making it through the day can depend on how people treat them. There is nothing more disrespectful than not being there for others especially when one claims to be a “friend.” Now the statement, “I could have it a lot better,” is equally as wrong. It is important to recognize that

the situation one is in shapes who each person is as an individual and no one can

Many people are the way they are for a multitude of reasons and sometimes in ways they aren’t even able to understand. People (having no right being in the business of others, interfering with unwanted commentary and belittling decision-making abilities) need to understand that harsh judgement in times of distress only deepens human struggle. Before judging a n o t h e r , recognize that you have no idea what has happened in a person’s past, mind and home life. Don’t do it.

Guardians of the Galaxy sequel lacks mystique

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 offers fun ride, but suffers from inconvenient release movie were removed from the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would not matter. Although a lot of the audience might not care about this fact, Avengers: Infinity War is only a year away from release and Marvel Studios is building it as the climax of the whole MCU thus far. There are only three MCU movies set to release in between now and then. At this stage, all the movies released should serve as a build

By Teren Kowatsch Entertainment Assistant Marvel Studios released Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, May 5 with much anticipation surrounding it. Given the abundant critical and financial success of the first Guardians film, with almost all the original cast returning along with Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone, the expectations for this movie were very high. First off, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the most unimportant and unessential movie in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike its prequel, nothing in this movie has any long-term effects on any other property in the Marvel universe. It is not a Marvel movie so much as it is a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. That may not be a bad thing, but it gives the movie the stigma of an unnecessary cash-grab rather than a film that changes the scape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the original movie did. Aside from that one glaring

issue, the movie has a lot of good things working for it. First off, Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) interaction and relationship with his father Ego (Kurt Russell) is the very foundation for the movie and is just strong and interesting enough to keep the movie fluid. Yondu’s(-

Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) is a cute and comedic relief to the seriousness of the film, and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) is the same sarcastic, smart-alec, quick-to-quip raccoon the audience will remember from the first film. In the first movie, Drax was a stonefaced character who took everything literally and couldn’t understand the simplest of metaphors. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, however, Drax is a constantly laughing, overall funny guy, especially in his interactions with Mantis (Pom Klementieff ). Ultimately, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 was not a bad movie, but it was still disappointing. The disappointment isn’t a result of the movie itself, but its context. The movie still had humor, serious moments, and mostly good character development, but the movie didn’t need to happen. If the

enough to don the name? Cafe Reuben’s sandwich leaves an excellent first impression. The aroma invites eager eaters to partake in a special dining experience. The cooks prepare a seductive sandwich that begs to be consumed with its luxury of goods nestled comfortably between two fabulous pieces of marbled rye.

It is a complete sensory overload in the best possible way. The bread has a lovely crunch. Every flavor is loud and clear, yet all work together in a delicious harmony. Nothing is weak about this sandwich. Everything is strong. Flavors burst as one’s teeth sink in. The flavors set sail on the taste buds and take the eater

Reflecting on year of Reubens By Tony Murillo Entertainment Editor

I often have had good conversations with my entertainment assistant Carl Snyder. Plenty of times we get some good ideas rolling around. We once had a late-night car conversation about how food brings people together. We talked about how food is different than music or movies in that everyone takes in food. Not everyone is an avid listener of music or watcher of movies but everyone has to eat. Bringing food to a social gathering is a surefire way to draw in more people, it attracts people. Carl and I both grew up watching the Travel Channel. Whether it was Man vs Food or Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives,

we ate up food shows. We were especially drawn to Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America. It was great seeing the sheer variety of sandwiches, restaurants and people on this show. A part of us wished we had opportunities like these hosts, being able to tour around, trying all sorts of food. We found an opportunity to live this out on a local level. At the beginning of the school year, my entertainment assistant Snyder and I started Taste Talks food reviews for the Purr. We were excited to start this. Our first review sits fondly in our hearts. It was a rainy night and Southway Pizzeria was packed. I had to wait for a table to be cleaned for us to sit in. When Carl sat down in the booth with me,

we both giggled uncontrollably out of excitement. I made the decision to exclusively review Reubens and go on the hunt for the best Reuben in the valley. While I did not get to try every one, but I still had my fair share. I had a wonderful experience being exposed to so many restaurants and people. In a way, we were living out those television shows that we grew up on. We were going from joint to joint trying the latest eats. We even had our friend film us for a video Taste Talks. This gave us a taste of what that the Travel Channel experience was like. Taste Talks has been a special opportunity for me and I can’t wait to see where it will go in the future.

helping bring the sandwich together. The bread attracts hungry customers with its lovely marble, but the bread is a success aside from its appearance. It has a satisfying crunch, yet it’s never too much. The bread holds up the entire meal, never proving itself weak. The corned beef is served in cubes rather than slices. Is a different choice that works and makes the sandwich unique. The corned beef has a strong identity and it fits this Reuben well. Full of flavor, this Cafe Reuben’s signature sandwich waits to be is one of the best Reubens in the valeaten. Photo by Tony Murillo. ley. For this, Cafe on a voyage of tastiness. Reuben earns nine out of 10. The salty, the sour and the cheesy all come together to create an unstoppable force. The liberal helping of cheese proves to be a smart move,

Harry Styles, the latest boy band star to venture on his own, dropped his debut LP Harry Styles May 12. His fellow One Direction members have all achieved success, but does he reach the same levels? Though many may be doubtful, Styles’ first leap into the solo world is a success. It is obvious that Styles is a student of the game. Styles know to write good hooks, structure songs and keep things interesting all while having fun. He writes accessible tunes without the uninteresting structure and janky transitions of various throwaway pop artists. This is especially true on “Sign of the Times,” a nearly 6-minute track that builds into a grand climax all while keeping its radio playability. One can tell Styles has spent his days listening to the classics. There is an undeniable 1970s influence throughout the record. Whether it’s the guitar-driven “Kiwi” or the spunky groove on “Carolina,” Styles’ album is soaked with classic inspiration. Styles peppers the project with warm piano and acoustic guitar, showing his appreciation for legends such as Elton John and The Beatles. Styles also shows his competence as a lyricist. The lyrics are solid and Harry Styles washes up on the cover of his debut LP. Photo courtesy of billboard.com.

Iron Fist decent

By Tony Murillo Entertainment Editor

Iron Fist issue 1, released March 22, marks the first time the titular hero has had his own comic book series since 2014’s Iron Fist: The Living Weapon. Writer Ed Brisson takes up the reigns in this brand new series. Artist Mike Perkins’ gritty work fits the tone well. The style is distinct and action is smooth. Colorist Andy Troy fills the book with striking color palettes and bold choices. His choice of strong colors is wise, full of high contrast and enhancing the action. This origin story depicts a Daniel Rand after the events of Iron Fist: The Living Weapon, complete with flashbacks of who he once was. Rand does not even don the costume in the issue. This book takes a dark tone, pitting Rand in an

underground fight club. This book even has Rand using alcohol to cope with his depression. Some may disagree with these decisions, but it is consistent and handled well. As a “beaten-up hero looking to start again” origin story, it does not shatter any ground. Meanwhile, the dialogue and pacing is well done. It may be nothing incredible, but it gets the job done. Iron Fist’s new series starts off just fine. It sets up the series, but isn’t a standout book. For being a focused and visuallyappealing issue, Iron Fist issue 1 earns seven out of 10.
