Senior boys prepare to compete

By Erika Schlafman News Assistant Mr. LHS 2019 competition will take the stage at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the LHS auditorium. This show is a way for senior boys to not only show off their talents and humor during their last year of high school, but to bond with one another. Mr. LHS has been around for over 35 years and will continue even after the new high school building opens in 2020. Makela Robinson, the LHS Cheer coach, runs this year’s even with help from LHS cheerleaders. Funds raised from the event will benefit the LHS cheer team. Winners from the 2018 Mr. LHS were Peter Everett in first place and Morgan Glidden as first runner-up. The first-ever Mr. LHS was Mike Schumacher who won in the 1980s. Schumacher became a professional dancer and actor after high school, and attended the Juilliard School of Dance in New York. Schumacher’s dance skills, personality and overall ablity to wow a crowd started the Mr. LHS tradition that continues today. Mike Schumacher, right, won as Lewiston’s first Mr.LHS in the 1980s. Throne brings in charity gold Elite LHS musicians By Jazmyne Hartogh Features Assistant For the past 25 years, LHS and CHS have combined efforts into raising large amounts of money for multiple different fundraisers in support of Golden Throne. Every year the ASB presidents and fellow officers from both schools meet up to discuss their ideas surrounding fundraising for the Golden Throne. Clarkston’s ASB president, Hannah Winter, and Lewiston’s ASB president, Drew Fenter, and their following team collectively decided on which fundraisers they would be donating to this year. After immense thought and plenty of wonderful ideas, they decided on Boys and Girls Club, CASA, Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, Joey’s Blankets of Courage, Strength and Hope, and LUCC. The Boys and Girls Club is a shelter/ safe place for millions of kids and teens. The club provides many ways to learn essential skills, make friends and have fun. CASA is Court Appointed Special Advocates for children who experience neglect and abuse. Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter is the local animal shelter in the community where dogs and cats can be adopted and

rescued. Joey’s Blankets of Courage, Strength and Hope’s goal is to bring comfort to those that are going through treatment for various types of cancer. LUCC stands for Lynch Up to Cure Cancer, a nonprofit organization that supports pancreatic cancer research. The goal remains to raise more money than they did the following year, hopefully surpassing $10,000., according to LHS leaders.

travel to Rexburg By Elsa Munster News Assistant

On Jan. 30, 13 select LHS band and choir students will travel to Rexburg, Idaho, for the annual Idaho All-state Ensemble. They will perform Saturday, Feb. 2, with all of the other top highschool musicians in the state. Idaho All-State Ensembles is a large choir that accepts students by audition only. For their auditions, students send in a recording of singing and vocal exercises, and hope to get selected. A limited number of students that can win a spot for this state event, and it’s a big deal to choir students, said Caroline Gibbs, an LHS junior. Once students make it to the event, the director gives the students their music material and they get to practice. There are three different choir groups, which are mixed choir,

treble choir and jazz choir. Most of what they perform is classical music, and some is in different languages, according to Gibbs. This year Gibbs qualified to go to Rexburg for a second time. “It’s really exciting. I went last year and I loved it so much and I was hoping I’d make it again this year,” Gibbs said. Being able to qualify for this makes her feel accomplished, Gibbs said, since she has worked hard on her singing skills. Gibbs also finds it exciting to compete at the state level, to meet a new music director, and to spend time with others who share her passion for singing. Other LHS students who qualified to attend are: Asiah Keenan, Ahani Galeano, Jenna Gunnell, Emily Harris, Harrison Smith, Hailey Asker, Cody Bloodsworth, Joseph Greene, Noah Williams, Amelia Black, Cheyene Durham and Saebra Woods.

1980s world news continues to reflect current events

By Gracyn Richardson Editor-in-chief

The 1980s was an iconic time, filled with synth, neon and big hair, and new generations are following its style en masse, but the '80s was filled with a lot of violence and new discoveries like the new century today. From the new generation’s angle, the problems in the world in the 1980s were much different, but weirdly alike with the ones today. • Sept. 22, 1980: The Iran-Iraq war began. It is also widely known as the First Persian Gulf war. • Jan. 20, 1981: Ronald Reagan was elected as President of the United States. He held the position till January 1989. • Dec. 8, 1980: John Lennon, lead vocalist from the ever-famous and beloved band The Beatles, was shot dead by Mark Chapman in New York City. in Washington erupted after precisely 123 years; a total of 34 people were killed. • May 22, 1980: Pac-Man was released in the U.S., gripping people in an addictive rage. • June to Sept. 1980: An extremely harsh heat wave killed over 1,250 people in the United States, temperatures soaring to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, almost every day from June to September. • June 1, 1980: CNN, founded by Ted Turner, had its first broadcast worldwide. • June 30, 1980: Queen debuted “Another One Bites the Dust.” • 1980: Post-it notes and Rubik’s cubes swept the nation. • March 30, 1981: Mark Hinckley attempted to murder thenU.S. president Ronald Reagan. Hinkley was released from his latest psychiatric hospital in 2016. • May 11, 1981: Reggae legend Bob Marley died. He was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in July 1977, with

symptoms showing on his toe. He refused amputation based on his religious beliefs, and eventually, the disease took a toll on him. • July 29, 1981: Prince Charles and Lady Diana got married in London, with over 700 million TV viewers watching the ceremony. Throughout the years, it as been known that Lewiston and Clarkston high schools, the ASB/Leadership kids of both schools take a significant amount of time, in and out of school, to organize Golden Throne, one of the largest activities in the valley all year long. Leadership members have worked very hard this year. Student leaders from the two schools do a lot behind-thescenes, from planning all of the schools’ assemblies and pep rallies to bigger events, such as prom, Homecoming, and the winter dance. Lewiston and Clarkston leadership students collaborate for Golden Throne with several meetings together throughout the year. For Golden Throne, and other events, members of leadership come up with the theme for the event, and together the schools use Golden Throne as a way to raise money for local charities. Ricky Guzman, this year’s Lewiston leadership adviser, said that an effective leadership student is usually selfless and hard-working. With all of the school activity planning, these students are also required to complete a certain amount of volunteer hours per quarter in the community. The students of Lewiston and Clarkston high schools and the supporting parents and members of the valley thank the students who made the entire activity go ‘round. Being a part of ASB and the leadership classes is a very large responsibility to take on, and a lot of pressure is put on the students--but they always follow through. Leadership is quality that many people lack, but the students at both schools excel as the valley’s high school’s leaders.

Hannah Winter brings smiles to CHS

By Skylar Raymond Features Editor

Hannah Winter is the 2018-2019 student executive president for Clarkston High School. As a senior, she has been involved in leadership for over three years, and enjoys the work the team does -- not only for the school, but the community as well. “I really enjoy being able to connect with all of the students and staff here at CHS,” Winter said, “[Plus] the leadership class at CHS Executive president Hannah Winter looks back on her years in leadership. After high school Winter plans to attend Lewis-Clark State College. She hopes to study secondary education and maybe even become the CHS principal in the future.

Drew Fenter starts off senior year with success By Jazmyne Hartogh Features Assistant

Drew Fenter expresses a smile after the annual LHS Golden Throne informational assembly.

In the spring of 2018, the LHS student body elected Drew Fenter to be the ASB president for his senior year. Many might have suspected him taking over this role, however, he never envisioned himself as president. Fenter said he always knew he wanted to be a part of school leadership, he just never imagined he would become the class president. “When I was coming in [to high school] I had friends in leadership, so I knew I wanted to be in it too,” explained Fenter. As the school year passes, he has proven to be an effective student leader. 'Members of the team need to exhibit characteristics of effective communication and the ability to grow as a leader', according to Ricky Guzman, the LHS adviser for ASB.

“Drew is genuinely a good person, a good guy, who cares and is passionate about stuff he’s involved in,” Guzman said. “I think he takes his responsibilities seriously, [and] I think he is also very amiable,” Guzman said. As a school president Fenter is in charge of multiple responsibilities. Fenter is in charge of running events,

assemblies, saying morning announcements, and giving oversight to student of leadership. Fenter wants to attend University of Utah for biomedical engineering. However, here at LHS he wants to be remembered as the ASB president who gave his best and who successfully planned events.

Leading up to try-outs, for the LHS team, Collins was determined to do her best. She began going to the gym and working out months in advance. In November, when she found out that she made it to varsity, Collins was shocked. She wasn’t expecting this outcome despite her efforts and preparation. “I have spent a lot of time practicing and I’ve played basketball for quite a few years so it’s really cool to wear purple and gold and play with the varsity team,” Collins said. Being on the court the first couple times made Collins feel nervous and play “not like herself." However, she surpassed her fears and gained the confidence to play to her best abilities.

Despite No. 1 spot, Aquaman fails to deliver

By Ellie Hafer Entertainment Assistant

On Dec. 21, DC Entertainment released its newest disaster: Aquaman. Directed by James Wan, the movie follows Arthur Curry, or Aquaman (Jason Momoa), as he fights for the throne in Atlantis. This movie is a mess of cliches, plot holes and bad CGI, or computer generated imagery. The movie starts off on a bad note. When Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) fights off a series of villains in her living room, the graphics are so terrible they look like they’re out of a bad video game. The action looks more like animation than actual fighting, so it just looks cheesy. The pattern of bad CGI continues through the whole film, which makes it hard to enjoy the movie. Once Arthur returns to the sea, the whole thing starts to go downhill. Anything that takes place underwater looks awful. For

DC Plot holes are another major issue as well. During promotions for the movie, Black M a n t a (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) appeared to be the main villain. leaves the audience confused. One IMDB reviewer called it, “ridiculous in a comic booky way.” Amber Heard, who plays Mera, wears a bright red wig that looks like it’s from Party City. But it could be worse -- Aquaman could still wear yellow spandex and ride on a seahorse. As bad as the first threequarters of the movie is, the last quarter starts to pull the movie back around. But by then, it is too far gone to save. The main conflict is seemingly resolved, until the plot reveals that Black Manta is still alive. This sets up a path for him as the villain in the next movie, but ruins anything that had been resolved up to that point. As of Jan. 9, the movie held the No. 1 spot and has an average rating of 7.5/10, according to Box Office Mojo. While the movie may be a hit for DC, it certainly doesn’t deserve that rating. However, Aquaman broke presale tick-

et records, beating Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, according to Variety.com. Amazon Prime partnered with DC in a deal that allowed viewers to pre-purchase tickets and see the movie a week early -- a smart marketing move on DC’s behalf. As hard as DC might try, the company lacks the talent and initiative to make a good movie. They seem to be stuck in a rut of plotholes, cliches and poor production. These pose an issue for any movie, and for Aquaman, they earn it a 2/5. DC should stick to making their dark, disappointing movies, and continue to let Marvel make movies that people will actually enjoy.

XXXTENTACION’s posthumous album, Skins, flops By Eli Thomas Co-Entertainment Editor

infamous Floridan rapper XXXTENTACION’s first posthumous album was released Dec. 7, titled Skins. This was the first release from the rapper after his sudden death this past June. Many fans were curious what sound this album would have, considering the fact that it was unfinished at his time of death and that some of the music on this album was done by people who work for his record label instead of X himself. The album starts off with a relatively tolerable introduction, especially in comparison with his last two which are possibly some of the most terrible album openers of all time. This one does not ooze pretentiousness and delusion, which can’t be said about the other two. The rest of this album unfolds into a huge mess. It is barely long enough to qualify as an album. Most of these songs barely break the two minute barrier, which does not automatically make them bad. There have been many fantastic albums

XXX’s record label released Skins in December after the infamous rappers death in June. Photo courtesy of Pitchfork.

with short songs (Abbey Road, Madvillainy, etc). The problem with these songs is that they sound like extremely underwritten demos that are a work in progress. A great example of this is the song “whoa (mind in awe).” Most of the song is just X singing melodies that only consists of “whoas” and “ohs” over a lifeless beat that gets progressively annoying the more it repeats. This song is followed by “BAD!”

which might be the most appropriately named song of all time. If anything, it is just a “BAD” attempt by X to make some sort of Pop radio hit, with its redundant lyricism and bland instrumental that adds nothing to the song. “STARING AT THE SKY” is also amongst the worst moments on this album and it finds X going full emo. The guitar in this track is impressive (especially since a lot of rappers do not play any instruments), but that does not

make this song any less thrown together and underwritten than the others. Plus, it only has 5 lines. And that’s only if you include the atritious screamo-vocals on the backend of this track. The sole feature on this album is none other than Mr. Kanye West himself. He appears for the majority of “One Minute” to deliver a sub-par verse (for his standards). The guitar riff on this song that sounds like the intro for some WWE wrestler, and when paired with Kanye’s cringe worthy lyrics about the legal system along with the screamo vocals towards the end, it makes for the worst song on the album by far. “what are you so afraid of” and “difference (interlude)” are two acoustic guitar songs that are found towards the end of the album. The songs show some potential but unfortunately they are still extremely lacking lyrically and conceptually. The guitar playing on both songs is impressive but does not make up for the fact that the songs have six lines between them. “Difference” should not even be considered an interlude because it is not much shorter

than the other songs on this album. Also, an album that is only 20 minutes should not need an interlude at all. The only real silver lining here is the song “Train Food” which is probably one of his best songs he has ever done. The lyrics are incredibly dark and contain this metaphor about death creeping up on you and striking when you least expect it. It’s chilling to say the least especially considering the violent circumstances of X’s own death. The instrumental is still pretty boring due to the redundant piano chords. Overall, this album sounds extremely unfinished and thrown together. One song is literally an older X song played backwards. It is not necessarily X’s fault, but rather the people who decided to release this and call it an album. For these reasons, Skins gets a 1/5.

Kingpin accidentally unleashes multiple Spider-Men By Mikey Vidovich Co-Entertainment Editor

Released Dec. 14 by directors Peter Ramsey, Robert Persichetti Jr. and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an animated film about different dimensions colliding. After a radioactive spider bites young Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, the boy gains special powers. He then must quickly learn how to control those abilities after a villain named Kingpin, voiced by Liev Schreiber, opens a portal that unleashes Spider-Men from different dimensions into the dimension of Morales. Together the new Spider-gang must team up to defeat Kingpin and get back into their reg-

ular dimensions before they disappear forever. This movie has an interesting concept that is portrayed nicely. Not only is it filled with intense action scenes, it offers a lot of comedy and some romance. This movie also gets the audience attached to the characters. So when story twists affect them, they affect the audience as well. The animation in this film is very different than others like it that have made it to the big screen. It was a mixture of semi-realistic animation mixed with comic book animation. It was fun to see all the different Spider-Men come together. The most memorable Spider-men include Morales’ Spider-Man, along with the original red and blue Spider-

Man (voiced by Jake Johnson) and Spider-Woman, also known as Spider-Gwen, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld. This film is enjoyable and it would be interesting to see a sequel with these characters. But -- spoiler alert -- it would be a wonder to see a story play out with all the Spider-Men back in their own dimensions. Overall, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse deserves a 4/5.

KFC strikes back at new Lewiston location

By Eli Thomas Co-Entertainment Editor

Kentucky Fried Chicken, the international fast-food chain specializing in Southern-style fried chicken reopened a franchise in Lewiston at 2329 Thain Grade late last month. Many people were skeptical of KFC’s return, especially after it closed its location where the year-old Mod Pizza stands. Nevertheless, KFC saw many locals flocking to its doors within the first few days of re-opening. The big question has been whether KFC has improved. This writer put to the test the KFC Three-Chicken Tender $5 Fill-

up (with a side of macaroni and cheese). The interior of the new KFC location is quite impressive compared to the last, as it offers a very simple but modern aesthetic. The dining areas are very clean and the service is relatively good for fast-food, however it is not outstanding. The food was prepared in a reasonable amount of time. The chicken itself was actually very satisfying. It was crunchy, warm and flavorful. It stood out compared to fried chicken at other fast food restaurants. However, the biscuit that came with this meal was subpar at best, dry and bland, almost like

eating styrofoam. The problems did not stop there. The mashed potatoes were awful. It was hard to find any of them in all the gravy. The gravy ruined any chance that the mashed potatoes had at being a good addition to the meal. Plus, there was an extraordinary amount of it (even after a request to hold the gravy). This entire part of this meal was ruined by the staff’s inability to follow simple instructions. It easily could have been avoided if they had simply listened. Thankfully, the macaroni and cheese was on the opposite of the culinary spectrum -- tasty and filling. The temperature

was perfect and the cheese was gooey and scrumptious. The macaroni had the perfect texture and temperature, making up for the mashed potato disaster. The cookie in this meal was phenomenal. It was a warm and gooey chocolate heaven. It is probably one of the best cookies in fast food, and it provided the perfect ending to this aboveaverage fast-food meal. Despite a couple of setbacks, this meal was good. The new local Kentucky Fried Chicken did a great job on its signature chicken, but perhaps needs to shift focus on some of the side dishes. However, the mac and

cheese side was probably the highlight of this meal and it definitely made up for the mediocre biscuit and the awful mashed potatoes. At the end of the day, KFC is a fast-food restaurant, so people should not have high standards before going there. The new Lewiston KFC does offer food that is superior to many of its competitors. For these reasons, KFC gets a 3/5.

Opinion 29 Upperclassmen ask for order during upcoming Throne Friday, Jan. 25, 2018

By Josie Hafer Opinion Editor Though Golden Throne is easily the most spirited activity of the school year, discussion surrounding for years now has been the apparent lack of spirit and vigor from the underclassmen. With the LHS “six-peat” on the line this year, school spirit has to be at its peak and underclassmen must give it their all. Leading the complaints from the Golden Throne crowd is assigned seating. For starters, stay on the designated side of the gym for each school! As much as students want to go visit with their friends from the other side, both schools ask they refrain f r o m doing so as much as p o s s i b l e. S o m e feel that it is still necessary to mingle, and if this is the case, students should agree to meet with friends in the connecting hallways between the seats. Levels of seats are also designated for certain grades

and other spectators, and arriving early to the venue will not guarantee that you can stay in the seats you pick at the beginning of the event. The courtside seats along the middle of the gym are reserved for members of school leadership such as ASB and class officers. The area directly behind those seats and along the entire length of the gym is strictly for seniors. The space behind the seniors and up to the barrier before the walkway is for juniors and sophomores. The upper block of seats is where freshmen and the general public are invited to sit. If lower seats open up, feel free to move! Just remember that seniority rules, and if an upperclassman asks for lower seats, be respectful and oblige. It may be their last year to see the legendary rivalry game from their designated seats. Stay positive, though, because people move and seats open up all the time. The whole idea behind Golden Throne is the school spirit, and for our Bengals to win another year, everyone has to give their all. At the Golden T h r o n e a s s e m b l y, t h e traditional cheers are reviewed as well as the themed cheers. If all else fails, be loud and be proud! Golden Throne is meant to be fun for all, and getting involved is the best way to do so.
