3 Editorial: Students see social stigma, superiority Friday, January 15
Enough with the praising and degrading. Everyone
has a passion and everyone works hard -- what other people think should not impact a person’s life. There wouldn’t be a fight for funding or recognition in high school if members of a community were all happy for each other and supported their variety of talents. It’s an age-old battle, but the conversation teens hear is really full of negative comments about the social system more than, not negative comments about the students. When someone writes a hateful message on social media about a group of people, it is easy for an
individual to take offense, considering that young people’s passions and interests are so closely tied to their senses of identity. Actions such as this are a step in the wrong direction and can make the aggressor seem uncivilized. If a person truly is as strong as they would like others to believe, the opinions and comments of others should not have a negative effect. Whether waking up with bruises or strained vocal cords, losing a game or losing confidence, everyone works hard to strengthen their abilities and therefore deserves recognition. With that being said, sometimes

you are not recognized and you just have to deal with it and use this realization to improve yourself. The way that you deal with these situations shows how others should define you. Many people will judge the behavior of others, not their interests. If someone calls you a freak or a jerk they are most likely referring to how you act and not what you do. The stereotypes in schools exist for a reason, and some groups of people just don’t mix well. At the same time, it is not helpful for cliques to speak ill about each other when they should be supporting each other. Young people should go against the system that
separates them instead of going against each other. Arts kids could try going to a game and supporting the “jocks,” and for athletes it wouldn’t kill them to see a drama performance or concert. This is simply a way to show support a talented group of peers. Rather than feeling so concerned with image, it’s important to not only strive for perfection with one’s own interests, but to be a well-rounded person by helping build others up. Changing the way people look at cliques seems like a radical idea, but defeating the system is a real option and it would make all of our lives easier. Because let’s face the fact -- sometimes

Lewiston placed first at the Clearwater Classic wrestling tournament Jan. 2 at Booth Hall. The closest team trailed Lewiston by 55 points. “You just have to bring
the intensity to the mat,” Cody Cromer, junior, said at the 30th annual Classic. Along with Cromer, who wrestled at 195 lbs., were juniors Colton Jones (132 lbs.) and Justin Chase (285 lbs.), plus seniors Jody Dykes (145 lbs.) and Ty

Hendren (126 lbs.). They all placed first at the Classic. Senior leader Hendren wrestled sophomore Tanner Hutchens in the finals for the 126-lbs. weight class. Due to injuries, Hutchens had to forfeit 18 seconds into the second round. “It was just a scramble that ended badly, but it is what it is,” said Hendren. In addition to Hendren, senior leader, Dykes, also placed first in the 145-lbs. weight class. Dykes pinned Isaac James from Clearwater Valley 1:19 into the second round. Dykes said he gained a lot of experience and wants to bring a good work ethic to following tournaments. Chase and Jones both shared their first Clearwater Classic tournament win this year. “I gained confidence, like a lot of confidence,” said Chase. “Next time, I’m pinning everyone in the first round.”

The most hyped game of the local basketball season has arrived. The Golden Throne battle between Clarkston and Lewiston high schools’ varsity basketball teams takes place Friday, Jan. 15 at the LCSC Activity Center in Lewiston. The Lewiston varsity boy’s current record stands at 5-5 with wins against West Valley, Moscow, Chiwnana, and two victories over Kuna High School.
“We played very well against Kuna both times,” said Assistant Coach Shawn Nilsson. “We were ahead by 28 at half the second time around.” The team also took third in the Avista Holiday Tournament Dec. 28. Walla Walla High School defeated the Bengal varsity boys that day, putting them in the loser bracket, but the Bengals defeated Kuna in the finals of the loser bracket, which placed them third for the tournament.

Clarkston ASB adviser puts insight into Golden Thrones meaning kayandersen chsasbadviser
My name is Kay Andersen, and I am the librarian and ASB adviser at Clarkston High School. I was the one of the three people who started the Golden Throne Sportsmanship competition about 20 years ago. I am pleased to see what it has turned into and how it has positively impacted our schools, and the students, but especially both
communities. Back in the old days, the rivalry between Lewiston and Clarkston got pretty intense. In 1994, we decided to try to turn that around by focusing on positive sportsmanship to foster some goodwill between the two schools. Little did we know how the Golden Throne would grow into the event that it is today. I’ve seen alumni show up wearing old letter jackets (that don’t fit quite
as well as they used to), and people waving spirit flags and sporting school colors because their niece, nephew or grandchild is now in school. I have watched Lewiston and Clarkston adults laugh and smile together about old times. I’ve talked to many alumni that come back just for this event. The best part about that is the combined spirit that has developed. Sure, there is a rivalry, but there is also that old-school,
small-town feel that you are part of something BIG! You can’t help but feel proud when both student bodies are cheering for the other school’s cheer squad after they perform. You can be brought to tears at the end of the evening when you hear how much money for charity the two schools combined raised in a week and present it to charities from the right here in our own valley. Long live Golden Throne!

Uptmor coaches notable JV basketball seasons trevanpixley sportsassistant
With all the hype around the LHS varsity teams and their annual matchup with Clarkston at the Golden Throne, it’s hard to pay attention to much else. However, the last two seasons Lewiston’s JV boy’s basketball team has silently performed very well. Last season, the JV boys went 20-0, which is an accomplishment all on its own, and this season they continued the streak until experiencing a recent loss
to Pullman. One person who deserves credit for that is the junior varsity’s team’s head coach Adam Uptmor. Uptmor, who grew up in Cottonwood, Idaho, played basketball all four years of high school. He got a head coaching job for Clearwater Valley High School, where his team won a state title in the 2011-2012 school year. Moving from a 1A school to a 5A school seems like quite the transition for a coach, but Uptmor says 1A competition has helped with his coaching in 5A.
“One of things that really prepared me for competition at a 5A is that the coaching abilities at 1A are phenomenal,” Uptmor said. “I think it made me a better coach and prepared me for high level of coaching as well.” Uptmor wasn’t hesitant to thank and give credit to the skill level and talent of the players who he has coached over the last two seasons. “We’ve had some very good players come through -- phenomenal ability. They’re just good kids,” Uptmor said. “They’re easy to
coach, [and] they do what they’re asked to, so that’s
what I think is the biggest thing. They love the game.”

Star Wars VII soars above and beyond expectations tonymurillo entertainmenteditor
On May 25, 1977, George Lucas unleashed his masterpiece, Star Wars, on the world and sent a shockwave through society. The film became a landmark in cinematic history and gave birth to a rich universe with limitless possibilities. It forever changed culture and spawned a franchise full of video games, television shows, comic books, novels and much more. Flash forward to Dec. 18, 2015,
and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens arrives. The Force Awakens has generated an intense amount of buzz with anticipation around the world. Now that it has hit screens, many questions arise. Is it better than the prequels? Is it as good as the originals? Will it be more like the classics? Will it do Star Wars justice? Director J.J. Abrams didn’t just do the beloved series justice, he raised the bar. Abrams had an incredible amount of pressure on his
shoulders. Star Wars sits in the hearts of many and has been with many since their childhood. This sets the expectations mighty high to please the purists. Casuals, the other major demographic, also plan to see this film. This means it has to be able to reach new people and make new fans. The Force Awakens has incredible crossover appeal and can please both types of viewers. This film shares many similarities with the original films. The plot mirrors A New
Hope in many ways. The Force Awakens contains a healthy dose of old-school vibe, thanks in part to the terrific performances by returning actors. Seeing classic characters again will surely bring nostalgic tears in the eyes of longtime fans. These returning cast members have just as much gusto as they did over 20 years ago. Although The Force Awakens has a classic feel to it, it still blazes a trail of its own. The new characters are wonderful additions to the Star Wars universe. They fit in well and have distinct personalities. It is pure magic watching classic and new characters interact with each other. One of this film’s strongest qualities is the writing. The dialogue is smart, witty and clever. The comic relief here contains genuine humor and is well-placed. The movie is quotable from start to finish. The pacing is solid -- it moves along at a healthy rate and never
drags or feels rushed. The Force Awakens also has a great sense of adventure, always maintaining its fun and thrills. This latest installment also pleases aesthetically and blossoms with creativity. The set design is fantastic --the new locations are interesting and often awe-inspiring. Meanwhile, the costuming is strong, and every character has a unique and detailed style of dress. The weapons, vehicles and every visible element in this movie please the eye. This movie is also shot well, with every still bound to be iconic. Viewers should appreciate the use of practical effects, as computer effects are not overused. The Force Awakens is all killer, no filler and exceeds every expectation. It’s not just a movie, it’s an experience. It’s one of 2015’s best and must be watched. As a satisfying movie and sequel, it earns five stars. Impressive. Most impressive.

Purrcussion: Purple Prevails 2015 Highlights tonymurillo entertainmenteditor
Georgia metal act, Baroness, has won over many people with its signature blend of alternative, sludge and progressive metal. In 2012, the band went through a traumatic bus crash. Drummer, Allen Blickle, and bassist, Matt Maggioni, left the band after the accident. This left Baroness with a challenge. The band had to make an album that topped its previous effort, Yellow and Green, and do so in the aftermath of the accident. Does Purple answer the call of duty? First off, this album is a cohesive effort. It boasts a clean sound and flows well. It’s a lean beast running at 42 minutes that helps Purple feel focused and concise. There is no fat to trim. Purple is also an accessible record. Its aforementioned fusion of metal
genres is always balanced and no element feels overbearing. This album succeeds in adding catchy hooks and melodies to the band’s sound. The riffs are fun but maintain a hard-hitting sound, resulting in a sonically pleasing LP. The production is often layered but never gets carried away with the grandiose. The psychedelic touches also go a long way, while John Baizley provides vocals that are both heartfelt and masculine. Technically, this album is a winner. The instrumentation is diverse and shows skill from the band members. The production is nice, splashing in colorful layers. The lyrics prove as another highlight of this album. They’re poetic and meaningful, but still fit well on a metal release. “Pull me to the ground, if I have to fall down, let me fall to you,” is one the lyrical showcases on Purple. From “Shock Me” to “Chlorine
and Wine,” Purple is a juicy metal release waiting for consumption and repeat listens. This is one of Baroness’s best works and 2015’s strongest releases. For this, Purple earns four stars.
