Thursday, Sept. 26 Superhero Day

Defeat plagued the Bengals’ homecoming night Friday, Sept. 27, at Bengal Field against the Richland Bombers. Despite a 2-2 record and a decent offensive season for Lewiston, the Washington team manhandled the Bengals 50-7 during a nonleague game. The Bengals failed to score an offensive touchdown, due to many snap issues, and quarterback-center exchange problems.

“Our kids didn’t come prepared – emotionally didn’t come ready to handle [Richland],” said head coach, Shawn Nilsson. “We didn’t show up to play.” Senior quarterback Drew Melton sat the game out, with a concussion obtained from the Hermiston game Friday Sept. 20. “We’ve got to take care of ourselves and do a better job of preparing,” said Nilsson.

Lady Bengals reign undefeated, 17-0 alex boatman senior editor

Lewiston High School volleyball players defeated the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in three straight matches Thurs. Sept. 26. With this victory, the Bengals remained undefeated in the season and updated their overall record to 17-0 and their league record 4-0. Junior Makayla Wilson led the team with 20 assists while senior Klaree Hobart accumulated 16 digs and two aces throughout the night. “I feel great to be playing with my teammates and friends again,” said senior Kendra Hill. “This year has started off great, and we’re working hard for a successful season.” With no seniors on last year’s team, nine players returned this year looking to add a second state championship to their trophy case. This time, the team featured four seniors: Madison Lang, Brittany Weeks, Hill and Hobart. “I am very pleased with how the season has gone so far,” said Lang. “We’ve had to work very hard to be in the position we are in. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the season goes.” The Bengals plan to host Lake City Thurs. Oct. 3, in Booth Hall.

Although the rivalry night turned out to be a hot one, nothing proved to be as hot as the Lewiston Bengals. The Bengals scored five first quarter touchdowns at Bengal Field against the Clarkston Bantams Fri., Sept. 13, during the Battle of the Bridges. Despite starting the season with a weak offense, the Bengals found a determination to change their habits. Senior quarterback Drew Melton started the Bengals off on a good foot by putting them ahead 7-0 on the fourth play of the game. With seven minutes and 57 seconds left in the first quarter, Melton threw to Jaydan Kaufman, senior wide receiver, extending their lead to 14-0. With four minutes and 27 seconds left in the first quarter, back-up quarterback, junior Kade Woods, threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to senior Andres Nuñez. After an interception by Kaufman with just three minutes and 39 seconds left in the first quarter, senior Jake Ralstin scampered for a 10 yard run to the end zone, improving the score to 28-0. To cap things off in the first quarter, Melton threw his final touchdown pass to senior Sawyer Meacham, who added to the Bengals’ first quarter lead. The quarter ended with a score of 35-0. The Bengals continued their domination into the rest of the game, despite one touchdown by Bantam seniors, Ryan Adams, on a 72-yard pass from Bruno Foust. The Bengals cruised to a final score of 50-7 over the Bantams, notching their on-going record to six straight wins against the rival team, all by double digits.

Where Are They Now?

Miley Cyrus

Purrcussion Amon Amarth: “Deceiver of the Gods” nathan crietz reporter

breederry editor in chief

Almost every child grows up watching Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. The young actors feel almost like role models to tweens or teenyboppers...but what happens when Disney stars go bad? Miley Cyrus, ex-teen sensation, turned badgirl as she not only chopped off her flowing brunette hair and painted her lips red, but lost most of her clothing. In a rash of unbecoming behavior, Cyrus appears to be attempting to distance herself from her Hannah Montana roots. The 2013 Video Music Awards showed the world her desperate attempts to turn herself into her own “artist.” With her music videos hitting YouTube, the VMA performance almost becomes forgettable. The video for “We Can’t Stop” shows multiple scenes of Cyrus grinding and biting pillows. Though the song shows the spirit

of teenager-dom, the video takes the theme “we can’t stop” to a whole new level. But as her newly released song “Wrecking Ball” hits YouTube, viewers gape. The video features Cyrus, again, grinding. This time her target is a giant wrecking ball. The kicker? Cyrus strips down completely, leave very little to imagination. Fans argue that the film is metaphorical for her vulnerability inside. This may be the case, but a little class is in order here. Though the song hits home for many viewers, the video hardly connects with it. After watching only half the video, this reporter simply walked away from the screen, unwilling to watch a pornographic music video. Miley, we get it. You’re not Hannah Montana. Maybe you should consider letting your voice lead your career, instead of your body.

Don’t Rock The Boat

Idaho consists of three geographic regions: North, South and East. However, we all know that the Treasure Valley area around Boise deserves the best treatment of any part of the state… just ask anyone from the southern part of the state. In terms of Idaho high school sports, the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) practices the belief that the South deserves the best treatment of any part of the state. Now since the IHSSA decided to take away one of the North’s berths, only the league champion “earns” the right to fight for a state title. So now the North sends one team to the state championship while the South sends five of its teams to vie for a state championship. Let me give you some background on the IHSAA and 5A. Lewiston falls into 5A, the largest classification, along with 18 other schools in the state. These 19 schools partake in three conferences. The Bengals participate in the Inland Empire League (IEL) along with Post Falls, Lake City and Coeur d’Alene. The other conferences include the

Southern Idaho Conference (SIC) of the Treasure Valley and the High Country Conference (HCC) in the eastern section of the state. The SIC contains 10 teams and the other five 5A schools reside in the High Country Conference. In the IHSAA, the playoff for team state championships, eight teams participate for the right to call themselves the best in Idaho. In football, within the IHSAA, the IEL always received two bids, the SIC received four and the HCC received two. The divisions of the bids generally reflected equality among the conferences. Because the South now holds five bids, 53 percent of the schools in 5A controls 63 percent of the playoff berths and the other 47 percent of the schools controls only 37percent of the berths. That math does not make sense to me. The SIC over the past three years continued to show itself as cowardly when it came to scheduling teams from the IEL. In 2011, SIC teams backed out of commitments to play IEL teams due to “travel costs,” forcing Lewiston, Post Falls and Lake City to play each other twice that year. The schools of the SIC now use the scheduling technique of playing each other all year not traveling outside the Treasure Valley. They continue to act as the best in the state, even though they do not play anyone out of their league until the playoffs. Over the past three years, the SIC failed to win a football state championship and last year no team from the Treasure Valley made it past the first round. So I guess if you can’t beat them, then take their berths away.

Amon Amarth, a Swedish band known for their song about the journeys of vikings in battle, collaborated alongside Metal Blade Records to create the new album, “Deceiver of the Gods.” They released the album June 25, with a new vocal and instrumental type of music. “Deceiver of the Gods” contained a new instrumental method, similar to Lamb of God, a band that specialized in melodic death metal. This manner added a harder and more varied style than those of their previous albums, which happened to be more basic. This new style also provided a huge benefit to the lead singer, Johan Hegg. He contributed a more aggressive and melodic version of singing to the album. The songs on this album all demonstrated this new approach, but “As Loke Falls” stuck out the most and appeared to be the best in the album. The songs story contains the

tale of the battle between Hemidall and Negalfar, the two war gods and Loke the god of mischief. While the two war gods fight, Loke joins in but suffers defeat when an opponent beheads him. The song contains a chronological version of lyrics from the start of the battle to Loke’s death. Although the album contained plenty of positive attributes, it contained a few faults, as well. Repetition within a few of the songs continued to be a problem. The repetition hindered the albums potential and created dull sounds. Likewise, because of the many different tempos in each song, the album never quite reached its full potential. Yes, songs need to change tempo, but Amon Amarth inserted too much variety. For example. when one tempo started fine, the band then changed it, creating a worse sound. Even though Amon Amarth introduced many advantages to the album, it also continued faults found in previous albums. As a result, “Deceiver of the Gods”, deserves three and a half out of five stars.

The Hidden Secrets of Milk; A Revelation bree derry editor in chief

“Got milk?” Growing up, children see that infamous milk slogan almost daily. Milk exists everywhere. In schools, vending machines, the fridge, and even on posters in the cafeteria. Propaganda for milk covers the nation. Even parents preach to their children about the importance of milk. This drink provides multiple positive health factors, ranging from bone density to sleep aides… but what if milk produces negative effects as well? Multiple researchers previously stated that milk causes more health risks than benefits. An increased risk of heart disease, cancer and even acne all result from milk consumption. Although milk serves as a valuable source of calcium and vitamins, a reduction of milk in the American diet appears to be essential for good health, according to NCBI.gov. Mark E. Hyman, Vice President for Corporate Relations for Sinclair Broadcast Group, once said, “While pimples are not as simple as too much milk or sugar in your diet, both have a significant impact. Nutritional deficiencies as well as excesses can worsen acne.” This statement proves correct, but also a little false. According to NCBI.gov, research indicates that a correlation between milk consumption and acne exists. With milk served to students nearly everywhere in the world, avoiding an over consumption proves difficult but statistics show that adolescents who consume more than the recommended three glasses per day suffer from more acne than other teens. Among more pressing issues, though, heart disease and diabetes sit as a few of the highest risks associated with milk. Studies indicate that dairy products including cheese, butter, and milk contain significant amounts of cholesterol-- a major contributing

factor to heart disease. PCRM.org reports that lowering ones intake of dairy products also helps to lower the risk of heart disease. With nearly 600,000 annual deaths resulting from heart disease, a decrease in milk consumption proves necessary. Still, GotMilk.com protests that the positive effects completely outweigh the negatives. With reported results such as stronger bones, muscle recovery and a solution for PMS, why not drink milk? Well JYI.org tells readers that cow’s milk, treated with the hormone rBGH, contributes to prostate cancer. As men fear prostate cancer, women fear ovarian and breast cancer – both of which milk contributes to as well. PCRM.org states that dairy products provide nearly 65 percent of estrogen found in one’s diet. Studies show that estrogen increases the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. Though women’s bodies naturally contain, and require, estrogen at a higher than normal level it also increases cancerous risk. Cooks serve milk in the cafeteria with school lunches. Students pour milk into their morning cereal. Coaches claim that chocolate milk replenishes the body after a hard workout. In the Western hemisphere, milk serves as an important nutritional piece… but with all the health risks related to milk, a need to control one’s milk consumption continues to be a pressing matter. To be a smart consumer is a powerful tool. The power to determine the correct amount for you proves necessary in today’s society of extra-large meals and super-sized drinks. America, a healthy body requires milk, but remember to control one’s self, and think about the repercussions of over consumption. It appears to be more severe than people know.

Haunted house fails to pay; volunteers, non-profits react mckennaanderson webpage coordinator

Nightmare on Grelle Avenue, a haunted house business run by Karen Kelly, opened its doors for a second season, Fri., Sept. 13. This year, volunteers hoped to see an increase in ticket sales and visitors, as well as creating a house twice as scary as the last. But a Facebook page surfaced in the social-media world Fri. Sept. 6, named “End Nightmare on Grelle,” intended to stop the haunted house all together. “I think that Karen Kelly is a thief and a liar to be able to steal all of that money from our community,” said the former volunteer who started the infamous Facebook page and wished to remain anonymous. He started the page after reading complaints from the Lewis-Clark Valley Reviews website. The Facebook page focused mainly on Kelly’s failure to donate promised money to the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter. A letter sent to the anonymous

Facebooker from the animal shelter stated that no money came into their possession from Nightmare on Grelle. The Lewis-Clark Boys and Girls Club also received no donations according to an anonymous employee at the club. Although those organizations received no money, Kelly donated some profits to the LCSC baseball team, who helped park cars and formed parts of the security team during the 2012 event. Tues. Sept. 10, in the Lewiston Tribune, Kelly stated that most of the profits from last year, which came to a total of about $30,000, went to this season’s

decorations and mortgage insurance. In March she and other members of her group attended one of the haunting industry’s biggest trade events, the Trans-Trade Halloween Attractions in St. Louis, Mo., according to the “Nightmare on Grelle” Facebook page. She planned to turn Nightmare on Grelle into a non-profit organization but told the Tribune that she considered the months of paperwork and decided against it. The Nightmare on Grelle business conducted illegal practices through its use of numerous unpaid volunteers. “Now if you lie to volunteers and you

say, ‘This is a non-profit organization and all the proceeds go to soand-so,’ and then you never deliver any of those proceeds, then that would be fraudulence,” John Potter, business law techer at LHS, said. According the the Department of Labor Website, profiting private sector employers must not allow employees to volunteer services due to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many volunteers stated that they chose not to volunteer again this year due to Kelly’s actions and the reputation gained from said actions. “It was definitely a surprise, the fact she said she was going to give them money and then didn’t kind of blew it out of the water for me,” said Ethan Coy, junior. “I don’t really want to help this year because I don’t want to support [Kelly] anymore.” Kelly failed to respond to three phone calls from the Bengal’s Purr. Adviser’s note: The reporter volunteered with Nightmare on Grelle briefly in 2012.
