Welcome to the latest Edition of the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce Magazine
We can celebrate many new members and successful events meaning we are on the way to fulfilling our goal to significantly grow this business community. We’re also continuing to be involved with the wider Wandsworth Business Community via various boards, steering groups and committees. All of this is part of our continued planning and over the coming months we will be considering further ways to engage and support our members.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe we are almost half-way through the year already!
This is a good time to reflect on what has been achieved so far, review what’s worked, learn from what hasn’t, and celebrate our successes. It’s important to look forward to the second half of the year, and re-strategise, plan, and adapt to make sure we will get to the end of 2023 having achieved our targets, feeling satisfied with our performance and accomplishments and ready to face the next.
Time has indeed flown by but at Wandsworth Chamber we have managed to get a lot done so far this year and it’s looking very positive.
Inside: June 2023
This mid-year point is also the home straight towards bringing back the Wandsworth Business Awards with the awards ceremony taking place on 20th June in the Clapham Grand. This will be the biggest event we will be hosting this year and we’re excited about bringing the business awards process to a crescendo with this glitzy finale. This event promises to be the highlight of the year, our vision was to make the evening a celebration for everyone whether you have entered your business for an award or not. Of course, the awards themselves will be the focal point but we have pulled out all the stops to make it fun and entertaining for all.
I am personally particularly excited to be welcoming the amazing Ainsley Harriett to the stage to host the evening. His reputation goes before him as a charismatic and charming TV chef, personality and presenter and I know we’re all in for a great evening with good entertainment and humour.
I also cannot wait for the Jamaican feast from Carib Burton which I of course had to try recently to be sure –it’s a tough job but someone had to do it! Couple that with the lovely cakes being baked by another of our members, Willough Bough Catering, no one will be going home hungry.
Finally, the opera will be powerful and reinforcing the theme for the evening; resilience and fight – representing what we as businesspeople have had to demonstrate in bucket loads since the pandemic and through the ongoing financial challenges we are all still facing.
According to the MD of the Global Centre for Resiliency and Well-Being, resilience is “your ability to withstand adversity and bounce back and grow despite life’s down turns.” And that’s exactly what we have had to demonstrate as individuals and businesses over the last few years. What we will see at the business awards ceremony evening, as we celebrate success within the fantastic array of businesses in the borough, is a demonstration of business resilience and the will to forge forward, which will hopefully inspire all who attend to keep pushing forwards despite the challenges they face. We look forward to seeing you there. Have a great Summer.
Best wishes,
Beverley Corson Chief Executive Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce

Retrofitting historic buildings can generate £35bn economic output a year
Retrofitting the UK’s historic buildings could generate £35bn of economic output a year, create almost 300,000 jobs and lead the fight against climate change, according to a new report.
Historic buildings play a pivotal role in Britain’s cultural heritage and economy.
They can also play a role in the fight against climate change if five core issues are addressed: policy, guidance, cost, supply chain skills and capacity of local government.
Grosvenor, Peabody, Historic England, The National Trust and The Crown Estate have joined forces to highlight the skills and training challenges that will need to be overcome to ensure the UK’s historic buildings contribute to a net zero future.
Together, they have commissioned research and have shared their findings. Their research identified a need for 205,000 workers to focus solely on retrofitting historic buildings every year from now until 2050 to meet the UK’s net zero targets.

FIT

This is more than double the number of workers the team estimates currently have the necessary skills.
Whilst the significant challenge of enlisting and training so many people to address the skills shortage is concerning, the group’s research has also highlighted the great opportunities this could bring – generating £35bn of economic output annually, 290,000 jobs, more efficient homes that are less expensive to heat, in the process reducing fuel poverty and future proofing our built heritage.
The report also calls for industry and Government collaboration to build a workforce capable of meeting the UK’s climate goals and safeguarding the UK’s historic buildings, whilst also creating new construction jobs.
Improving the energy efficiency of historic properties could reduce carbon emissions from the UK’s buildings by an estimated
5% each year, while making homes warmer and cheaper to run, according to the report.
The report revealed that more than 105,000 new workers including 14,300 plumbers, 14,500 electricians, as well as thousands of carpenters and scaffolders, will be needed to work solely on decarbonising the UK’s historic buildings every year for the next 30 years for the UK to meet its 2050 net zero target.
Buildings in the UK are responsible for around a fifth of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, with historic buildings accounting for a significant proportion. Around one in five – 6.2m UK homes –and a third of all commercial buildings –around 600,000 – were built before 1919.
Retrofitting measures, such as ensuring windows and heating systems are more energy efficient, lowers emissions and can also prolong the life of older buildings.
Retrofitting also avoids the carbon emissions resulting from demolishing older buildings and building new ones. However, retrofitting historic buildings requires more specialist skills, for example, plumbers would need to be able to work with heat pumps and hydrogen boilers, which is where the specialist skills training comes in.
The industry has suffered from skills shortages due to a combination of factors including an ageing workforce, the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit.
The organisations behind the research are calling on the Government to make the apprenticeship levy more flexible, allowing unspent funds to be channelled into training more people in the heritage retrofit field. About £3.3bn in unused funds from the levy was returned to the Treasury between May 2019 and July 2022.

“Building Wandsworth” launch event
The event presented opportunities for attendees to network and build relationships with peers in this industry.
It also offered a chance to present ideas to the industry and Chamber representatives to create a better understanding of what local businesses want to get from a network like this; what issues are being faced and what topics they would want to hear more about and how together we can help to make this community fruitful for all.
There are numerous developments taking place in the Borough, aimed to cater for people who live and work in Wandsworth. We also have a fantastic array of Property and Construction businesses serving the commercial and residential communities.
The vision for this network is to create the opportunity for you to connect with other suppliers, contractors, developers and stakeholders, to encourage referrals between local businesses and enhance your opportunity to thrive.
The launch event was presented in partnership with Handelsbanken and was held in the iconic Battersea Power Station.
“At Handelsbanken relationship banking is at the heart of everything we do. You deal with people you know by name and decisions are made locally by us at the branch, enabling us to offer a banking service that is tailored to your needs.
Our branch is staffed by an experienced team who know and understand the local market. We offer banking services for both personal and business customers, and we aim to provide the highest quality service.”
The Building Wandsworth launch event is hopefully the start of something beneficial for many businesses in this sector, but it’s just the beginning and will evolve as we go. Please come along and help us shape what this is going forward.

Should I consider becoming a B Corp?
What is a B Corp?
Over the past couple of years you might have seen increasing reference on websites or other materials to businesses being a ‘B Corp’, and wondered what this is all about. The answer is that a B Corp is a business which is accredited as having shown ‘high standards of social and environment performance, transparency and accountability’.
What are the benefits?
Where a business has achieved the relevant external accreditation by B Lab (a US-based non-profit organisation), they can describe themselves as a B Corp when dealing with prospective employees, suppliers and customers. Think of B Corp status as an additional stamp of approval that your business is committed to having a positive influence on society and the environment, as well as making a profit.
This may generate commercial benefits by attracting talent and customers who care about such things, which might in turn lead to increased growth and opportunities as well as other benefits such as potentially improving access to external finance.
Could I be become a B Corp?
This certification is available to companies, sole traders, partnerships, mutuals and co-operatives (but not
available to charities and non-profit organisations).
Generally, businesses which have been operating for at least a year can seek B Corp certification. This does mean that the process of applying for B Corp status is likely to vary depending on whether you are a start-up or a large enterprise (if an applicant is a start-up and has been in operation for less than a year then it can become “pending B Corp”, which allows the relevant company time to prepare for an application for full B Corp certification). If you are a larger business or one that has been established for longer, you would probably apply directly for full B Corp status.
Note that achieving this accreditation does not change the legal status of your business.
What would we need to do?
The key legal step towards becoming a B Corp is amending the company’s governing documents to include specific wording to reflect the underlying principles which B Lab are seeking to achieve (which for a limited company means amending the company’s Articles of Association). Russell-Cooke are on hand to assist with this part of the process, including any corporate approvals or other related requirements.
In addition to the key legal step above, there is the B impact assessment (“BIA”), a set of questions used to measure a
business’s positive impact on its workers, suppliers, community and environment. A minimum score is required to become B Corp certified, and the BIA includes a ‘Disclosure Questionnaire’, which allows businesses a chance to disclose any sensitive practices (for example producing or trading tobacco), fines (such as tax penalties) and sanctions affecting or relating to the company.
It is rare for a business to achieve the required score on an initial assessment (80 points, including points for amending the governing documents as set out above) but B Lab offers various ways to help a business improve their score, and Russell-Cooke may be able to assist with preparing responses to questions or preparing or strengthening the documentation underlying certain questions (such as policies or contract terms) so as to improve your score.
Once the right score has been reached, there is an agreement to be signed and an annual fee to be paid and the business is entitled to label itself as a B Corp. Thereafter, the business will need to re-certify every three years to maintain its status and also pay an annual certification fee.

Why Hayman’s of London is still the perfect tonic for Gin-lovers
ayman’s of London has a long, rich history of gin-making. Established in 1863 by Miranda Hayman’s great-greatgreat-grandfather, James Burrough, Hayman’s of London is now co-owned by Miranda and her brother James. Based in Balham since 2017, the distillery has recently launched two new products, Hayman’s London Light, a low alcohol G&T, and Respirited, a sustainable British vodka.
“My great-great-great-grandfather probably didn’t think 160 years ago that it would still be going now,” said Miranda, who has worked for the family business for 18 years.
“Whereas, my father, Christopher, who is the fourth generation and has spent over 50 years with the business, has always felt like the guardian of Hayman’s protecting it for future generations. Although James and I are now the co-owners, his passion for the business is still there and he is still involved as master distiller.”
“It’s more than a job when it’s a family business. James and I bring different things to the table. He is probably more creative and I’m more detailed, so we work together well. We have a great team, who we really value, and work with them on ideas, but only family members know the full recipe. Keeping the business in the family for future generations is something we would love.”
“We’re very fortunate to have our heritage and my great, great grandfather was a pioneer of London Dry. That sets the tone of Hayman’s, but we also want to be innovative for the future.”
Innovation and sustainability are key factors of the business’s growth. They are currently working to become B Corp certified, as part
Hof their sustainability programme, and they have launched a range of innovative products.
“Earlier this year, we launched Hayman’s London Light, which is great for people who want to cut back on their alcohol intake but enjoy the ritual of having a G&T,” she said.
“In April, we wanted to celebrate London as part of the Coronation, so we introduced a London-inspired wrap for our bottles. It has all the iconic symbols of London such as the London bus, black cab, red postbox, and was designed by artist, Rose England, who is known for her artwork around London, so she felt like the obvious choice.”
“We have created our first vodka from our distillery. We take leftover spirit from our distillation process and redistill it five times and charcoal filter it into a pure vodka, Respirited.”
“We always want the family business to be sustainable and this reuses waste product into a great new drink. It won the Most Innovative Spirit Product of 2022 and we have had really good feedback.”
The Haymans are always looking at ways to keep the business thriving for generations to come and Tube commuters may have spied the distiller’s advertising campaign on the London Underground.
“We are very aware that the gin category is changing,” said Miranda.
“We have had this incredible gin boom with lots of new gins. There are over 400 gin distilleries in the UK. Eighteen years ago, I used to be able to name all the gins, not anymore.”
“It’s going back to what it was historically, a highly respected spirit. We are the original London gin; we are truly independent and we use the same recipes and the same distilling methods from 160 years ago. There are real people behind the brand. We care about what we make and we care about the planet.”
“We make our gin over two days which is rare nowadays. We put the botanicals in a copper pot and let it rest in the spirit for a day and then distill it on the second day.”
The distillery, which has 12 members of staff, has been based in Balham since 2017.
“The reason we chose Balham is because we love the community feel of Balham; it’s a very supportive community,” she said.
“There are very good transport links for international consumers – we sell 80% internationally and the remaining 20% across the UK”.
“We joined the Chamber this year as we wanted to support Wandsworth and be a part of the community and learn from each other.”
“We are going to hold an event at the distillery for the Chamber in the autumn. It’s a good way for people to network and find out more about us.”
“We love people coming to the distillery. Trip Advisor says we are London’s favourite distillery tour. We hold tours and cocktail masterclasses which are very popular. We set up a training academy, which we host most Mondays, free for the hospitality trade.”
What makes a good gin is up to the individual, says Miranda, but a balanced gin mixes better.
“Gin is a mixing drink; no one drinks it neat,” she said. “If a gin is balanced, which is our style, it mixes better and is more versatile.”
So, how do you make the perfect G&T?
“Gin and tonic is the go-to combination but it’s all about how you make it,” added Miranda.
“You need a hi-ball glass and keep everything as chilled as possible. Use lots of ice, a measure of gin and top it up with tonic. Keeping everything cold retains the carbonisation of the tonic water. A citrus garnish is best as that enhances the flavours of the gin. And, if you’re mixing a sloe gin, it is really good with sparkling wine.”

HOW LONDON AND AFRICA are closer than you think
Richard Burge shares his thoughts on boosting trade with Africa, Levelling Up London, and the importance of working collaboratively with other Chambers.
Nurturing strong, positive links between London and Africa is on the agenda for the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
“Africa is a continent of wonderful countries and we are flying the flag for Africa here, in the best city in the world,” said Richard Burge.
“We are establishing an African Hub in the City to support businesses across London who want to engage with Africa. We need businesses to pursue the adventure of trade. It can be difficult but no more difficult than trading with America.”
“We are hoping that the Hub will inspire a lot of businesses that not only will be a good market, but it will also be a lot of fun. That’s what I’m keen to show businesses.”
Information on where the Hub will be located will be released soon.
International trade
Free trade agreements (FTAs) between the UK and Australia and New Zealand are due to come into force on 31 May 2023, which has been welcomed by the British Chambers of Commerce.
“FTAs are proceeding, but let’s not get too excited,” he said.
“It’s just replicated what we had before; not much has changed, but they imply trust and are a helpful step forward. Can we do this with other countries? It shows it can be done.”
“We are no closer to a trade deal with America. What can we do to make trade easier? With America, it’s about trade facilitation and individual states. We often make the mistake of thinking of America as one country but a lot of it is dealing with individual states. Individual states are keen to do that because they are competing with other states.”
A big issue for the business community is obtaining business visas.
“As a country and in London, one of the biggest problems we are facing is business visas and how difficult the Home Office makes it to obtain one,” he added.
“There are delays with visas, and that’s got to change. Business visas should be dealt with by the Business and Trade Department not the Home Office, the same as student visas should be dealt with by the Department for Education not the Home Office. They don’t need the Home Office getting in the middle of it. The Home Office should only deal with immigration not business visas.”
Levelling Up London
Levelling Up London is “here to stay”.
“The focus is always on particular places, but it would be better to focus on people rather than places to hit its target,” he said.
“I wonder if in London we need to articulate Levelling Up much more in terms of what London needs, instead of saying that we are hard done by. We need to put a positive case forward for London.”
Recruitment in London is “still a big issue”, especially in the hospitality industry.
“There are four major hotels opening up in London and this will inevitably take good staff from other hotels,” said Richard.
“Generally, there is relatively low unemployment in London. We do have a problem with over-50s leaving the workplace since Covid. As employers, how do we bring back these experienced middle managers who are the glue of workforces? The incentive for them to return to work isn’t there; we haven’t got the pull to draw them back right yet. Financial incentives aren’t enough.”
London is “proving to be as resilient as always”.
RICHARD BURGE
“It’s a complex time,” he said. “We have a skills shortage, but we also have a pocket of people who can’t get a job.”
“Overall, our international work is expanding and we’re getting a lot of interest from overseas, but Britain’s influence has diminished.”
“People are still investing and still want to talk to London, but the UK is seen as a declining brand and I don’t think that this is going to be solved by a flash campaign, it needs to be through policy change.”
Having a local Chamber’s support is important for networking, recruitment, growth and sharing ideas.
“Businesses have access to their local Chambers,” he said.
“The Chambers across London are active; things are going well and will continue to go well. We have 19 Chambers affiliated to us [LCCI] and it is a genuine network.”
“Other Chambers are a great place for support too, whether it’s here or overseas. Every problem you face, someone else has faced it so I always say that I talk to people and steal their solutions!”
Supporting the Ukraine
A key part of Richard’s role is engaging with other Chambers internationally. In June, he will be attending the Geneva World Chambers Congress and at the end of July, he will visit the US to meet other chief executives of Chambers.
His recent visit to the Ukraine has forged good links with the Chambers there.
“We have got a major role in the Ukraine Congress,” he said.
“We’re forming business ventures with the Ukraine Chambers.”
“The focus of the G7 Summit this year is how we can all continue to support the Ukraine.”
The LCCI is hosting a joint float with Kyiv at the Lord Mayor’s Show in November.
“Our Chamber offices will be turned into Ukraine – decorations, food such as dumplings – for the day. It’s all about keeping Ukraine as a focus. This is going to go on and on, so we need to keep reminding people that they need our support.”

SPACEMADE is making space for co-workers who want something a little bit different
Spacemade launched its first coworking space three months before the global pandemic closed most workplaces in 2020 and had to press pause on the business, but now it is about to open its 14th site. Co-founder Jonny Rosenblatt talks about why his coworking model is a success as he unveils Spacemade’s latest site in Wandsworth.
A new coworking space is about to open in Wandsworth.
The Gatehouse, a “new, beautifully designed and quirky, triangular building”, is due to open on Armoury Way on 12th June.
“We’re really excited about this space,” said Jonny Rosenblatt, who co-owns Spacemade with his business partner, Dan Silverman.
“It’s such a prominent base locally and instantly identifiable, with a lot of people driving past it on a regular basis.
“Wandsworth has a wonderful high street and train station nearby and the main town centre isn’t too far away.”
18 | Business Connexions THE BIG INTERVIEW
CGI of Wandsworth site
The four-storey building, which has 15,000 square feet of space, has provision for 200-220 members. There is lots of open-plan space for coworking and there are 20 private offices, as well as focus booths and meeting rooms.
“The Gatehouse is a relatively new building and has all the hallmarks of a healthy building,” added Jonny.
“It’s very beautifully designed and has an amazing energy to it.
“Wandsworth has been high on our list for a while. When we were able to take over this building, it was a no-brainer; it’s such a great market as there’s such demand locally.”
❛❛
The Wandsworth site is one of the newest buildings in Spacemade’s portfolio, which already has bases across London in Archway, Putney, London Fields, Cricklewood, Wimbledon Village, The Strand and in Leeds. New sites in Birmingham and Fulham, London are due to open in the summer, with new coworking spaces scheduled to open in Clerkenwell and Marylebone in London later this year.
The premise behind Spacemade is to create bespoke coworking spaces across London and the UK. Some have gyms, others have podcast studios and Birmingham will even have a bouldering wall. All have flexible memberships and offer coffee provided by Caravan Coffee Roasters.
“What we love to do with these spaces is make them so they are worth going to, they are worth leaving home for, so we are very hospitality focused,” said Jonny.
“We have partnered with an amazing coffee provider, Caravan Coffee Roasters, who make beautiful coffee.
“They are important spaces socially and mentally too. We are trying to combat that pandemic of loneliness that is creeping into people’s lives. We want all our members to feel like they belong in our space and that the team knows little things about them and makes them feel welcome.
“Wandsworth will have a gym and a Peleton studio too so you can go to the office and drink brilliant coffee, build great relationships with other coworkers, get some work done and complete a workout as part of your working day.”
Spacemade was born from a mutual friend putting Jonny and Dan in touch over a project. Jonny has 12 years’ experience in coworking flexible space and set up his former business, Headspace Group, in 2012, before selling it in 2017. Dan’s experience is in real estate and has helped invest and asset manage over £2bn of real estate. He saw first-hand the shift in the flexible workspace market and the issue buildingowners had in capitalising on it.
They quickly realised they had complimentary experience and had spotted a gap in the market: working with landlords to capitalise on their space for coworking.
“I had just sold my business and Dan wanted help with an issue he had,” he said.
“We quickly realised that the problem he was facing, most companies are also facing. Our model gives landlords the chance to reposition and repurpose their real estate. It is the perfect marriage of landlord and coworking. We got to know each other, and the rest is history. I’m a firm believer in doing rather than talking.”
They launched Spacemade in 2019, three months before the global pandemic put the UK into lockdown.
“We opened our first site three months before the world changed,” said Jonny.
“It’s been a really interesting journey. Everyone’s world turned upside down in 2020. We set up as an office provider when everyone got sent home. It wasn’t a great day, but what became clear to us very quickly when we fast forwarded to May/June 2020 was this need for very flexible, good quality coworking space in the suburbs was becoming more important. We had a boom.
“The way people viewed their working situations and how they wanted to work had changed. A lot of people now had a choice about how and where they wanted to work. Everyone had an existential rethink about their whole work life.
“Coworking spaces compliment people’s work-from-home patterns.”
Outside of London, they have bases in Leeds and Birmingham and have ambitions to expand across the UK, as well as at other sites across London, and have 34 staff across the sites.
“The variety is great,” he added. “Each one has a different design and is unique, for example, in east London, there is a raw, edgy, super-cool vibe whereas the one in The Strand, which is also our headquarters, has more of a members’ vibe.”

“battered by the pandemic and energy costs” will welcome removal of REUL Sunset Clause
The Government has announced that it will drop the sunset date of December 2023 from the Retained EU Law Bill.
The sunset clause had meant that all EU-derived laws would cease to apply from the end of the year.
The British Chambers of Commerce has “greatly welcomed” reports that the sunset clause will be removed from the Retained EU Law Bill.
William Bain, head of trade policy at the BCC, said: “Over the past few months, the BCC has consistently put forward a strong business case to remove the uncertainty caused by an imminent sunset clause for retained EU law.”
“Firms have been battered by the pandemic, energy costs, inflation and rising interest rates, but their confidence in the economic outlook has been starting to grow. Now is not the time to knock that with a hasty sunset clause across vast areas of UK regulation.”
“But it would appear the Government has been listening and we welcome the opportunity for further dialogue. Businesses are keen to see reform which removes barriers to growth, where appropriate, that keeps costs down and avoids divergence within the UK internal market.”
Reform is needed to UK labour market access
The BCC welcomes the House of Lords European Affairs Committee report on the future of the UK-EU relationship.
William Bain, head of trade policy at the BCC, said: “The BCC welcomes these clear and wellevidenced proposals for reform of access to the UK labour market. We provided evidence to the committee based on our research among businesses in key economic sectors.
“There are still particularly tough issues faced by firms who cannot attract sufficient UK staff in care, hospitality, manufacturing and logistics.”
“We need a fast, efficient and affordable system to access skills from outside
the UK when we can’t recruit and train locally. The Shortage Occupations List (SOL) is a key tool to do this, but it must reflect the reality on the ground.”
“UK firms are also hampered when it comes to travelling to Europe due to the lack of flexibility in some of the business travel and mobility rules in the Brexit deal, especially in relation to financial, professional and business services.”
“We urge the UK Government to respond decisively to these findings, so that firms can have the confidence and access to the skilled workers they need to grow their businesses and get economic growth moving.”

TIPS TO REDUCE your energy consumption
Businesses are increasingly becoming aware of the need to reduce their energy demand
With rising energy costs and environmental concerns, it is essential for businesses to take steps to reduce their energy consumption. There are a number of ways to do this, from simple changes in behaviour to more technological solutions. In this article, we will explore some of the most effective strategies that businesses can use to reduce their energy demand and save money in the process:
1 Conduct an energy audit: An energy audit will help you identify areas where your business is consuming more energy than necessary. A professional energy audit will provide you with a detailed report on your energy consumption patterns and recommend ways to reduce them. CREW Energy has funding from Wandsworth Council to support twenty local businesses with free energy audits and reports.
2 Switch to energy-efficient lighting: Replacing traditional lighting with energyefficient bulbs can help you save up to 75% in energy costs. LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient and long-lasting option available in the market.
3 Use smart power plugs: Smart plugs can help you reduce standby power consumption by automatically turning off power to devices when they are not in use. They can also be used as timer switches for electrical products like drinks fridges, reducing running times.
4 Smart Thermostats and smart radiator valves: These products can cut heating demands by around 20% through weather compensation (heating later on warmer days) and by zoning heating (only heating rooms when they are in use).
5 Install acrylic magnetic glazing: This relatively cheap solution can cut heat loss through windows by up to 20%. Window films can also reduce heat loss and reduce solar gain in the warmer months, ideal for businesses with south facing windows.
If you are interested in a free energy audit contact info@crewenergy.london and quote business connexions magazine.
Making Wandsworth more sustainable
Around 2,000 households in Southfields already have separate weekly food waste collections. The waste is sent away to be turned into biogas that’s fed into the National Grid. Now another 4,400 homes will be included, including for the first time some high-rise flats and a local school.
Areas covered include Bedford Hill, the Balham Hill Estate and Andrew Reed House in West Hill. The council also hopes to trial new ways of helping estate residents recycle, starting with Keevil Drive, also in West Hill. Residents are also urged to waste less food in the first place. Get tips on reducing waste at lovefoodhatewaste.com
It’s all part of ambitious new targets to make Wandsworth a net zero borough by 2043. Last year Wandsworth became the
first inner-London authority and one of only 122 cities and towns worldwide to achieve a place on the CDP Cities A list for action on climate change. Other work includes encouraging sustainable travel, decarbonising council buildings and vehicles and increasing biodiversity.
PUTNEY BUSINESSES reducing their impact on the climate
Fourteen businesses in Putney have joined the Business Climate Challenge (BCC).
Funded by the Mayor of London in partnership with Positively Putney, the BCC is a voluntary energy efficiency programme developed to support businesses in reducing their energy consumption, costs and carbon emissions.
Participating businesses are receiving customised technical advice to help make their workplaces more energy efficient. Participants pledge to reduce their energy consumption by 10% in the year and to help them do this they receive a packageof bespoke technical support from an energy consulting firm.
The package includes a workplace audit and Display Energy Certificate (DEC), a recommendation report with energy efficiency measures to reduce energy consumption, a roadmap to net zero as well as individual oneto-one support and group training sessions.
The businesses in Putney who have joined the programme are the following: Cobalt Sky, Sporting Feet, Homework Workspace, St Christopher’s fellowship, Putney hotel, Gibson & Young solicitors, Get Set Go Swim, Morrows Outfitters, Putney Arts Theatre, Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf, Crossfit Putney, New Putney Hardware, Dynamo, Putney Plaza – PWB property.
We are thankful that these businesses are prioritising how they can reduce their impact on the climate. They are currently working through their energy audits, and we look forward to hearing the ways they are saving their energy usage soon.
Positively Putney BID were one of nine partner organisations that the Mayor of London partnered with to offer this great programme to businesses across London.

Two schools visit Apple to showcase digital and coding work
Pupils from two local schools visited Apple’s new offices in Battersea to present their new digital skills learned over the past year, thanks to a flagship collaboration with the global tech company now based in the borough.
St Mary’s Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School produced an exhibition of their digital project work and used their iPads to show the Leader of Wandsworth Council and Apple employees what they have achieved so far.
Starting last summer, over 80 students from Year 5 picked up coding and digital creativity skills through The Battersea Project and the Apple Regional Learning Centre which has been established at Wandsworth City Learning Centre.
To support the students and their parents, more than 30 teaching staff learned essential
coding and digital literacy skills to gain Apple Teacher Certification which helps them unlock apps for the classroom and explore the Everyone Can Create curriculum. Parents have also been offered digital classes.
Executive headteacher Jared Brading said: “To be able to up-skill and enthuse everyone has been fantastic, and we are excited by the ongoing opportunities working with Apple will bring our community in Battersea.”
Councillor Simon Hogg, Wandsworth Council Leader, said: “We’ve seen some incredible work from the amazing staff and students at St Mary’s and Sacred Heart schools. I’d like to thank the team at Apple for all they’ve given to the partnership so far and
providing such inspiration to our students. This event shows how much we can achieve by working in close collaboration and I look forward to working together on even more exciting things in the future.”
During their visit to the Apple campus, the students got a taste of working in a hi-tech office and asked Apple employees about their jobs. They were also treated to a musical session in the Apple Lecture Theatre where they produced their own tracks using GarageBand.
Over the past year, the schools have been running in-school sessions, after-school coding and digital clubs and a successful summer camp which increased attendance at booster classes in Maths and English.

Councillor Kemi Akinola, Wandsworth Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for the voluntary sector, business engagement and culture, said: “Every year, WAF showcases the rich mix of places, artists and communities in Wandsworth through an inclusive, open-access programme that anyone can be part of – be it as a performer, a
participant or as an audience member.
“Launched in 2009, WAF now attracts close to 20,000 people every year to Wandsworth’s streets, parks, and venues with its exciting and eclectic line-ups. Community-minded at heart, but always with big aspirations, WAF is a unique melting pot of creativity from both local and international artists.
“WAF’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, to supporting and platforming creative talent and arts organisations in the borough, and to promoting a thriving cultural economy by working in partnership with our communities, is at the heart of Wandsworth Council’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2021-31.”

Transforming mental health services
The new Trinity building at Springfield Hospital in Tooting is now open and is home to four inpatient wards as well as outpatient services for adults and young people.
Trinity is part of the new ‘Springfield Village’ landscape opening up over the coming years which will include new homes, a new 32-acre park, shops, a public square and improved hospital facilities.
The new Shaftesbury building will follow in the summer and together with Trinity makes up a £150m investment in local mental health services.
The council is also working to improve the mental health of local people and reduce inequalities, including more support within schools, a new mental health impact assessment, an updated Suicide and Self-harm Prevention Strategy and working with the NHS to ensure everyone has access to community mental health hubs.
If you need mental health support in a crisis, you can call the 24/7 Crisis Line on 0800 028 8000

How the built environment affects health
Research indicates that the environment in which we live is inextricably linked to our health from childhood to old age. Some of the borough’s health challenges include: Poor mental health, Physical inactivity, the needs of an ageing population, Obesity, Environmental hazards such as air pollution and climate change.
The built environment is part of the ‘wider determinants’ of health and has an influence on people’s physical and mental health, shaping the social, economic, andenvironmental circumstances that determine our health.
For example, the design of our neighbourhoods can influence physical activity levels, travel patterns, exposure to air pollution, social connectivity, mental health, and general wellbeing outcomes. Having a good built environment can promote good health, improve access to goods and services, and alleviate, or in some cases even prevent, poor health thereby having a positive impact on reducing health inequalities.
Planning considerations
The spatial planning system, including planning applications, have great potential to influence overall health and wellbeing.
Some examples include the consideration of:
• Good housing that supports the wellbeing of its occupants including location, internal design, accessibility, and quality.
• Neighbourhood design which supports social cohesion and interaction, connectivity including transport access and active travel, opportunities for employment through location of retail, services, and industry as well as healthy food options.
• Social infrastructure including local community facilities, educational establishment, primary (GP) and secondary healthcare facilities.
• Provision and access to green, open and amenity spaces which support physical activity, leisure, and mental health wellbeing.
Regional and local level planning include a range of policies to support health and wellbeing, and planning applications need to consider these requirements.
How you can help
The public have the ability to influence their local built environment by:
• Providing comments on the borough’s Local Plan at consultation stages. The Local Plan determines what kinds of development are acceptable within the borough and what the priorities should be.
• Commenting on a local planning application. You can comment, as well as encourage others to do so, on health-related issues that you think should be considered, for example the need for play spaces, or restricting fast food outlets near schools.
Developers have a responsibility to consider health outcomes and need to complete a Health Impact Assessment during the application process.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
The “Gut”, your “Second Brain”
By Nudrat Chagtai - Nutritional Therapist
Ahealthy digestive system not only ensures optimal nutrient absorption but also influences mental health, and this connection between the gut, and the brain, is known as the gut-brain axis.
We often forget that digestion begins in the brain, as digestive juices are stimulated by the thought of eating. Which is why eating on the go, or while distracted can affect digestion. When digestion is compromised, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive disorders, inflammation, autoimmune conditions, and food sensitivities.
The gut is also home to trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, some beneficial and some non-beneficial, collectively referred to as the gut microbiota. Like the wider ecosystem we live in, where diversity and balance are important, the diversity of the gut microbiota is crucial for maintaining a healthy gut. The products of these bacteria also influence other aspects of health, including metabolism, immune function, and mental wellbeing.
Chronic stress, with the release of cortisol, can disrupt this delicate ecosystem, and affect digestion. Conversely, an unhealthy gut can send signals to the brain which can contribute to stress and anxiety.
References
The bidirectional relationship highlights the importance of nurturing both gut and mental health.
Therefore, adopting a balanced diet, exercise, managing stress, and prioritising sleep are key. So here are my 7 top tips for healthy digestion and wellbeing:
1. Balanced Diet: A diverse whole food diet rich in fibre, fruits, vegetables, oily fish, and whole grains, with limited processed foods, sugar and unhealthy fats helps to nourish the microbiota and maintain gut health.
2. Prebiotics and Probiotics: Prebiotic fibre, found in foods like onions, garlic, or asparagus act as fuel for beneficial gut bacteria. Probiotics, either through supplementation or fermented foods like kefir and sauerkraut, or yoghurt can restore live beneficial bacteria, promoting microbial diversity, particularly after antibiotic use.
3. Mindful Eating: Practicing mindful eating, chewing food thoroughly and slowly, aids digestion and nutrient absorption. My clients find these simple changes help reduce stress, allowing the body to focus on digestion.
4. Regular Exercise: Physical activity promotes digestion by stimulating the intestines and blood flow. Regular exercise can also help manage stress and improve mental health. From my clinical experience, clients managing chronic stress benefit more from slower paced exercise, like yoga or walking.
5. Stress Management: Incorporating meditation, journalling, breathwork, yoga and even singing into daily routines can positively impact both mental wellbeing and gut health.
6. Prioritising Sleep: Sufficient sleep, 7-8 hours, allows the body to repair and restore itself, promoting a healthy gut and balanced mental state.
7. Adequate Hydration: Drinking enough water supports digestion and prevents constipation.
I work with clients who are struggling with longstanding digestive issues, who are managing the stresses of family, work and going through mid-life hormonal changes. As a Registered Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach, I support them with a personalised Nutrition and Lifestyle plan, and simplicity is key for long lasting change.

Q1 In a few words tell us a bit about your business?
TransFXr specialises in currency conversions and international payments. We work with both individuals and businesses, providing cost efficient solutions and a first class tailored service. For individuals this may include: buying and selling properties abroad, emigrating and overseas investments. For companies this may include: importing, exporting, foreign based offices or international expansion.
Q2 What gives your business ‘the x-factor’?
All our clients are issued with bank accounts in their own name, receive their own dedicated account manager as well as access to our fantastic online platform. With almost 10 years of industry experience, I personally ensure that all clients, irrespective of their size, receive the best personal solutions and service. I don’t hide behind my desk in the office, I love to meet clients face to face where possible.
Q3 What motivated you to set up in business?
It is easy for FX specialists to beat the high street banks on price and service, but I discovered the missing piece of the puzzle was accountability and dependability. With high broker churn in the industry, individuals and businesses have been subjected to lack of continuity. I, therefore, believe that the only way to demonstrate to clients that you are a good long-term solution, is to be an owner-run brokerage.
Q4 What do you like most about working as a start-up?
A fresh clean slate to design your own systems and processes.
Q5 What has been your greatest business success to date?
Client retention. It is a competitive industry and I base the success of the business on happy clients. If they are happy, they will continue to use our services, and hopefully refer us on.
Q6 What has been your lowest moment?
At TransFXr we believe in an honest and transparent approach. I find it frustrating when I see some of the underhanded sales tactics used by some of our competitors in an effort to win over new business. TransFXr will not change its approach to hit short term targets, instead we are focused on the long run.
Q7 In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next year 5 years?
I would love the TransFXr brand to more widely recognised in the wider community, and known as the leader in transparent and fair international transfers.
Q8 What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business?
Jump in and go for it. If you wait for the perfect timing, it may never happen.

Q1 Who are you?
minutes with ...
SANDRA MUNOZ-ALVAREZ Videographer & Editor CEO and Founder
I am Sandra, the creator of Keepsake Videos. I have been living in Wandsworth for 20 years and it is an amazing place to live. Filming and editing a monthly video of my son growing up introduced me to the world of videography 16 years ago. It was a hobby at first, but I went on to study a HNC in Film Production at the South Thames College. It is now my full-time job and I love it!
Q2 What’s your business all about?
I am videographer and film editor for businesses, the community, and
of Keepsake Videos
families. My business is about capturing, creating, and editing short videos to help businesses, charities, and local organisations to highlight what they do. They can then share those on their website, social media or simply attach a video link to their client’s email. I also do longer pieces, documentaries, tutorials, music videos and event videos for special celebrations.
Q3 Three words to describe yourself?
Creative, friendly, approachable.
Q4 Ideal Customer?
I am lucky I get to be creative working with several charities and local organisations in the borough, capturing their events and the work they do, helping them to get exposure. My favourite assignment is to film events and being part of the community. This is why I am so excited to be filming the upcoming Wandsworth Art Fringe in June, which is one of my favourite event of the year.
Q5 Biggest achievement?
Saving my local library from closure by making a vox pox campaign video, creating a promo video helping the NHS to fundraise for tablets in ICU during the pandemic and crafting a “Wandsworth on Lockdown “video in collaboration with Providence House & the Battersea Power Station choir. This video crafted during lockdown to say thank you to so many people via art got shortlisted in various film festivals including Miami and India.
Q6 Biggest gripe?
Now, it is the challenge of learning a new way of editing for Virtual Reality, but it is important to keep on learning and keeping up with modern technology.
Q7 Your inspiration?
Without a doubt, the many charities, and local organisations I worked with. At the start of my career, I was volunteering to build up my portfolio filming the amazing community groups and charities in Wandsworth to help them spread the word. It started as a passion to help share unsung community work while improving my skills
and now I do this for a living. Most of those charities have now become regular clients over the years and being proactive helped me to gain exposure, experience and returning clients.
Q8 Philosophy in Business?
Listen to your clients and always give a little bit extra. They will remember you and thank you for it. This is how you get returning clients and positive reviews.
Q9 Sporting Hero?
I have been lucky to meet few great Squash and Tennis Players including Jamie Murray while filming for Rackets Cubed Charity and love to see the kids getting the opportunity to get great at rackets game while improving their education and nutrition.
Q10 Biggest tip for success?
Be proactive, love what you do, and always research the latest effect, technique, plugins, equipment in your industry. Filming is constantly evolving and so should your filming & editing business.
