Welcome to the September 2023 edition of the Wandsworth Business Connexions magazine. Another season has passed, and we hope you have had a great Summer, whether you have been on holiday or worked through it.
At Wandsworth Chamber we had an event break in August, so it was a good opportunity to take the time to plan and get ahead for the coming months.
Inside: Sept 2023
Hayman’s Gin, AFC Wimbledon and Russell Cooke Solicitors are all Patron members of Wandsworth Chamber and we would like to take the opportunity to thank them and all our Patron members for their continued support for our work and for helping us to offer such an interesting array of events to our members and the local business community. Thank you.
As part of our August planning, we started to look towards running another ‘Building Wandsworth’ event for the Property & Construction industry in the Autumn and have plans for a fun Christmas party – apologies for mentioning this so soon but as you can imagine, by running 50-60 events a year we have to plan well ahead!
Talking of planning ahead, we have already started planning for the 2024 Business Awards. Yes, it only just took place, but as it is the biggest event
Finally, as a Chamber we are all about encouraging Commerce in the Borough, and opening the supply chain so we are pleased to be supporting the London Borough of Wandsworth’s Supply Wandsworth programme, which is all about designing and executing a local procurement strategy for the Borough. We will be encouraging SMEs to make the most of the programme of skills workshops and Meet the Buyer events during September to November and looking to the larger public and private sector organisations within Wandsworth to get involved in discussions to help plan and design the local procurement strategy for the Borough.
As you can see there is a lot to come so, please keep an eye out for our communications and regularly visit www.wandsworthchamber.org for more information.

The Power and Potential
Internationally best-selling business author Bernard Marr talks to Sarah Dale about the future of AI, the positives and the pitfalls, and how businesses should prepare for the future of technology.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been around since the mid-20th century, but its evolution has accelerated tremendously in the past few decades.
The initial stages were characterised by a lack of progress due to limited computer processing capabilities and data. However, with the advent of increased computational power, advancements in machine learning, and the availability of vast amounts of data, AI has evolved significantly.
Today, we are in the era of AI that is capable of deep learning. This means that AI can learn and improve from experience, solving complex problems without being explicitly programmed to do so. It’s the technology behind self-driving cars, generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, recommendation systems, and many other advancements that were just science fiction a few decades ago.
Futurist Bernard Marr, an internationally bestselling business author, is a CEO and strategic advisor to some of the world’s biggest organisations including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Toyota, and the United Nations. A prolific writer, he has penned 22 best-selling books, writes a regular column for Forbes and is a frequent contributor to the World Economic Forum.
“AI’s power and potential are immense,” said Bernard, who lives in Milton Keynes with his wife and three children.
“From automating mundane tasks and providing real-time analytics to creating complex algorithms that can outperform humans in specific tasks, AI has already shown us a glimpse of its potential.”
AI can learn from data, identify patterns, and make predictions, all at a scale and speed that is beyond human capability. This makes it a powerful tool for addressing a wide array of challenges across various industries, including healthcare, finance, education, and transportation, to name a few.
In medical healthcare, AI has the potential to drastically improve diagnostics, patient care, and research. AI algorithms can analyse medical images, genomics data, or electronic health records to detect diseases such as cancer at an early stage, often with greater accuracy than human physicians. They can also predict disease progression or recommend personalised treatment plans based on a patient’s unique profile.
Moreover, AI can automate administrative tasks, allowing healthcare professionals to spend more time on patient care. In research, AI can sift through vast amounts of biomedical literature to identify potential new drug candidates or predict their possible side effects.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AI
“For business leaders, it’s crucial to understand that digital transformation isn’t just about implementing new technologies; it’s about fundamentally changing how your organisation operates,” said Bernard.
“You need to create a culture that embraces change and fosters innovation.
“First, develop a clear vision and strategy for your digital transformation. Identify the business areas where emerging technologies like AI could have the greatest impact. This could be improving customer service with chatbots, enhancing decision-making with data analytics, or automating routine tasks.
“Second, invest in skills. Your workforce needs to be able to leverage these technologies effectively. This might involve hiring new talent, reskilling existing employees, or partnering with external organisations.
“Lastly, prioritise data management. The value of AI and other emerging technologies lies in their ability to extract insights from data. Ensure you have robust data governance, privacy, and security measures in place.”
AI does pose a risk to jobs, particularly those involving routine or repetitive tasks, however, it can also create new jobs. In fact, many of the jobs that exist now didn’t a few decades ago.
AI is expected to create new roles related to developing, managing and maintaining AI systems. However, this transition requires proactive measures, including reskilling and upskilling of the workforce, to ensure people can take advantage of these new opportunities.
Like any technology, AI can pose dangers if not properly managed and regulated. Some potential dangers highlighted by Bernard include:
• Privacy and security: AI systems can process vast amounts of data, which can be a risk if these systems are not properly secured. They can be used for malicious purposes, such as surveillance, data theft, or cyberattacks.
• Bias: If AI is trained on biased data, it will produce biased results, leading to unfair outcomes. This is especially concerning in areas like hiring, lending, or law enforcement, where bias can have serious real-world consequences.
• Ethics and accountability: As AI systems become more autonomous, it can be difficult to determine accountability. For example, if a self-driving car is involved in an accident, who is to blame? The manufacturer, the owner, or the AI itself?
• Socio-economic impact: AI might increase inequality if the benefits are not widely distributed.
Bernard’s latest book, Future Skills: The 20 Skills and Competencies Everyone Needs to Succeed in a Digital World, outlines the essential skills needed for success in an increasingly digital world.
“As the technology landscape evolves, most of the future workforce will be doing jobs that don’t yet exist,” he said. “Even our current jobs are not immune to change; they will evolve, some will become obsolete, and many new ones will emerge.”
With this in mind, his book aims to prepare everyone - not just those in the workforce today, but those who will join in the futurefor this rapid evolution. He explores the need for skills beyond just the current job market, including the jobs that may exist in the future as we delegate more tasks to machines. Interestingly, these future skills lean more towards softer skills, the areas where machines are currently unable to match human capabilities.
“The aim of the book is not only to inform but also to encourage individuals to cultivate these skills, in order to succeed in the digital era,” he added.
“It emphasises the importance of continual learning, adaptability, and a keen awareness of technology, while also underlining the importance of emotional intelligence, ethical awareness, and personal wellbeing. In essence, it provides a comprehensive guide to thriving in a future that, while uncertain, holds many exciting opportunities for those prepared to navigate it.”
Bernard predicts that AI will become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, in ways we can and cannot currently imagine.
“We will likely see more applications in areas like personalised education, preventive healthcare, and sustainable energy management,” he said.
“AI will become more explainable and transparent, addressing current concerns about ‘black box’ decision-making. We’ll also see the rise of ‘edge AI’, where AI processing happens on local devices, reducing data privacy concerns and improving efficiency.
“In terms of regulation, I expect to see more comprehensive frameworks emerge to address ethical, privacy, and security issues.
“However, the future of AI depends on our actions today. By investing in research, promoting ethical use, and ensuring equitable access, we can harness the potential of AI while mitigating its risks.”

The Leader of Wandsworth Council has announced that Wandsworth will join the race for London Borough of Culture 2025.
Wandsworth Council Leader, Simon Hogg said: “We’re delighted to be going for London Borough of Culture 2025 – it signals real confidence in a changing, modern Wandsworth. We can’t wait to show London and the world what our wonderful borough has to offer.”
“We need to do this together - so we want to hear your ideas to shape our proposals for the borough’s bid.”
Over this summer and autumn the council will work with communities across Wandsworth to develop a London Borough of Culture proposal
that builds on all the creativity and vibrancy that Wandsworth has to offer, from award-winning cultural organisations to heritage and grassroots community groups, freelance creatives and artists.
‘Help showcase our borough’
Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “We’re incredibly proud of our borough. Wandsworth is full of people who create, innovate and share their time with others in the community.
“Culture is our local identity so we invite everyone living, working and studying in Wandsworth to help showcase our borough so we can win London Borough of Culture in 2025.” We want everyone in the borough to help shape the proposal and get behind the bid – find out more at Wandsworth.gov.uk/culture

Deputy Council Leader Kemi Akinola attended the launch of the second Re:Create programme at the World Heart Beat Music Academy in Nine Elms. People who attended the first programme were also there to talk about how they benefitted from the scheme with 96 per cent saying they had a better understanding of creating
a marketing plan and 92 per cent saying they understood better how to create a business plan.
Justin Treadwell, from Wandsworth-based arts production company Anarchy Division, said: “Re:Create helped clarify and pull together a specific vision, not just in terms of mission statement but also a specific growth plan beyond the current stage, which I had been stuck at for a while.”
Cllr Akinola said: “We know operating in the creative sector can be challenging, and we want to help small businesses, freelancers and artists meet those challenges. We hope those of you who join the programme get the understanding and support you need to grow.
“Our passion for nurturing the creative sector is part of the reason we have decided to bid for London Borough of Culture 2025, and we would love to work with all local creatives over the coming months to develop a programme that works with all our communities, neighbourhoods and businesses.”
Re:Create offers 50 creatives and cultural businesses three hours of free tailored one-toone business mentoring from business coaches in the creative industries plus an e-learning course, training videos and downloadable resources. Team Battersea Alumni Project
Battersea Power Station was delighted recently to welcome back some of its alumni of former employees who once worked at the Power Station when it was operational to see the building’s transformation for themselves this summer.
Over forty years since the Power Station stopped producing electricity, the nostalgia and passion for the building felt by those who used to work there remains strong. More than 100 people including former engineers, secretaries, apprentices, mechanics, and their family members have come forward to be a part of the Team Battersea Alumni Project, since it launched in 2019.
The Alumni group enjoyed a special tour of the Grade II* listed building, which included a rare opportunity to visit the Power Station’s original 1930s Art Deco Control Room A, where electricity was distributed to addresses across the capital including Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. This was followed by a visit to Lift 109, the Power Station’s unique chimney lift experience, which transports visitors 109m to the top of the building’s north west chimney offering stunning 360 degree panoramic views of the London skyline.
Completing their trip to the neighbourhood, the Alumni group enjoyed some refreshments at Control Room B, the Power Station’s second control room which has been transformed into a 1950s style all-day bar where visitors can get up close to the original switchboards, controls, and dials.

LATEST GUIDANCE on data scraping for online businesses
In late August, 12 data protection authorities based around the world (the DPAs) – including the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office –issued a joint statement that advises social media companies and website operators to implement “multilayered and procedural controls” to prevent unlawful data scraping and to encourage compliance with applicable laws on protecting personal data.
“Data scraping” generally involves the automated extraction and re-use of data from the web – often relating to personal information that is “publicly available” on social media websites or other online sources. Organisations may use computer programmes such as “spiders” or “bots” for such purposes.
However, data scraping can be used for illegitimate means – from cases reported to the DPAs over recent years, they have identified a number of data privacy concerns arising from use of data scraping technologies (particularly those that have the capacity to collect vast amounts of personal data).
These include exploiting scraped personal information for targeted cyberattacks, identity fraud, profiling and surveillance, unauthorised political or intelligence gathering and unwanted direct marketing or spam. In such cases, the individuals concerned were unaware that their data was scraped from their accounts/profiles on social media (or other) websites, which can undermine their trust in the organisations that run these sites. Any business which hosts data online is at risk of third parties scraping their data.
Recommendations from the DPAs for website operators at risk of scraping
To tackle unlawful scraping, the data protection authorities have recommended that website operators apply a “combination” of technical and procedural controls that is “proportionate to the
sensitivity of the information” that they hold. For example, businesses who host data at risk of scraping may want to consider:
• setting up a team or specific roles within their organisations to protect against, monitor for, and respond to scraping activities
• identify data scraping activity (e.g. bots), such as by using CAPTCHAS, and blocking the IP address where such activity is detected. A CAPTCHA is a Completely Automated Public Turing test that tells computers apart from humans – a common example is where a user is required to look at a set of pictures and identify the ones which contain a specific object
• limiting access per hour or day by one account or other account profiles, or from where unusual activity is otherwise detected
• making use of legal actions such as having terms and conditions that require consent before data can be scraped, or “cease and desist” letters to enforce deletion of scraped information (and confirmation of the same)
• increasing user awareness and understanding of the privacy settings they can activate when visiting/using their websites
More broadly, data scraping techniques (like other technologies) are dynamic and evolving - businesses must therefore remain vigilant to new opportunities where unlawful data scraping can compromise the privacy rights of individual users.
While these measures seek to prevent unlawful data scraping, it will likely have implications on businesses that use scraping for legitimate, commercial purposes. For example, a business that carries out research & analysis may use scraped data to identify trends/behaviours among individual users.
For further details, go to https://ico.org.uk/ media/about-the-ico/documents/4026232/ joint-statement-data-scraping-202308.pdf to access the joint statement.
Data scraping: other legal implications for data scrapers
Data scraping can be carried out for legitimate purposes, but use of scraping does present a number of risks. Aside from privacy concerns, data scraping may have other legal implications for businesses that use these practices –for example:
• where the scraping involves the extraction and re-publishing of a substantial part of someone else’s material (e.g. text, drawings, logos, songs etc.) then that could constitute infringement of copyright. Similar considerations will apply even where businesses “link” or “frame” information set out on another website
• the scraped data may have come from an original source that contains copyright-infringing content
• where the scraped data involves a compilation of information that is arranged in a systematic or methodical way, this may constitutes a “database”, whereby the original database maker has a claim against the business carrying out such data scraping. This is known as the “sui generis database right” which is exists independently of copyright
As highlighted above, website operators may contain strict and enforceable terms of use which prohibit unauthorised data scraping from their websites.
In summary, there are various legal requirements and restrictions which businesses must bear in mind in the context of data scraping.
If you have any questions in relation to this article, or are seeking legal advice on a data scraping matter, please contact Imanpreet Suthar on imanpreet.suthar@russell-cooke.co.uk

Collaboration with the Chamber is helping RCA form good links with the business community
Tatiana Schofield, Head of Knowledge Exchange at the Royal College of Art, talks to Sarah Dale about the RCA’s transformation from an art & design-based institution to a forward-thinking, innovative STEAM-focused postgraduate university and her enthusiasm for forming new relationships with Chamber members.
Tatiana Schofield sees the importance of design to every business: “Design is so important to every sector; it’s how we make an innovation more user-friendly and more human”.
As Head of Knowledge Exchange in Research and Innovation at the Royal College of Art, her role is leading the university’s collaboration with industry, Government, SMEs and other external partners.
It is this drive to collaborate with more businesses in the communities local to the campuses – in Battersea, South Kensington and White City – that is behind the RCA’s decision to become a Patron of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce.
“We joined the Chamber this year as a Patron because our Research and Innovation department moved to a new building at our Battersea campus,” said Tatiana.
“It was designed by the architecture practice, Herzog & de Meuron, and our vision is to develop a vibrant public realm, organise public events and engage with local business communities. This is what we call knowledge exchange, one of the RCA strategic goals along with research and education excellence.”
“Part of Knowledge Exchange’s strategic goal is to engage with large companies and SMEs. That is why it is important for us.”
“It’s early days as a Patron but we have attended several events over the summer. It was very useful to meet members and exchange provisional ideas on how we can work together.”
“For us, developing local business links is very important as benefits are immediately noticeable and affect local business ecosystem, create more vibrant business culture and opportunities and generate a stimulating environment for local communities, people and businesses.”
“Battersea is our local community so it’s important that we also help the vibrant business culture and take up opportunities to stimulate collaboration in the local community.”
“I would say to new members who have just joined to really plug into the local business social life.”
The RCA, founded in 1837, has a rich heritage and history of almost 200 years. It is a specialist and research-intensive postgraduate university and offers a wealth of programmes in its four schools: School of Architecture, School of Arts & Humanities, School of Communication and School of Design. Alongside its traditional artbased subjects such as Painting, Photography, Ceramics & Glass and Sculpture, it runs programmes on Intelligent Mobility, Global Innovation Design and Innovation Design Engineering.
The RCA unveiled its new £135 million, 15,500 square metre campus in Battersea last year, the most significant campus development in the college’s history.
In 2016, the RCA was given exceptional funding by the Government to create a new building in Battersea to house art and design programmes as well as the graduate incubator InnovationRCA, and the research centres the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, the Intelligent Mobility Design Centre, the Materials Science Research Centre, the RCA Robotics Laboratory, and the Computer Science Research Centre.
“This is an award-winning incubator, which I’m proud to say is one of the most successful entrepreneurship centres and incubators in the UK,” she said.
“Our incubator supports over 80 start-ups in various sectors including healthcare & wellbeing, digital & fintech, agritech, and sustainability & cleantech.”
“As a small specialist institution we share similar challenges to other universities including limited resources to support research, innovation and
young talents. We are interested to build new partnerships as well as sharing our design capabilities.”
“We are number one globally in art and design, so we don’t have a shortage of applications,” she said.
“Applications from students are high, but higher education is becoming more expensive, and we are always looking for philanthropic donations and sponsorships.”
“Like other universities in the UK, the RCA receives government funding for research –although most research funding is competitive – and we work hard to support our researchers to win grants and develop collaborations with businesses.”
Tatiana is excited about the prospect of making further collaborations with other Chamber members. “We are keen to explore opportunities to engage with local companies, both large and small, to develop Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), a collaboration which is supported by InnovateUK to create new competitive products and accelerate business growth.
“We have already made connections with local businesses, for example, Handelsbanken, which is interested commissioning our talented students to take photographs of local community life for their local branch.”
“The bank is local and wants to use local art,” added Tatiana.
“It is shaping up to be our first project collaborating with other Chamber members and we look forward to many more.”

Business leader says make the most of your Chamber membership
Access Self Storage Head of Operations Gareth Morris talks to Sarah Dale about the advantages of being a Patron member of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce and how to form positive connections with other businesses.
ike the storage sector in general, Patron member Access Self Storage is displaying strong growth since Covid and has new sites in the pipeline, building on its most recent additions in Brentford, Sydenham and Streatham.
Head of Operations Gareth Morris, who has worked for the business for more than 20 years, said: “Storage is a growth business and whilst business slowed during Covid in 2020, there has been particularly strong growth across the sector in the past few years.
“We have opened new storage sites in Streatham, Sydenham and Brentford, which are all performing very strongly, and we have extended our Fulham site. We now have 3.5 million square feet of storage across the UK, as well as offering offices, car parking and packaging services. We cater to businesses of all sizes from start-ups to SMEs.”
“Our business is very focused on technology solutions and we have digitised our move-in processes. Our customers now use an app to access our sites and manage their accounts.”
The company, which was established 30 years ago and offers secure storage units ranging in size from a locker to a football pitch, has 59 stores nationwide including in Wandsworth, Battersea, Clapham Park and Balham. It has 250 employees across the storage sites and head office.
LAccess Self Storage ihas been a member of Chambers across the UK and has also been a member of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce for “many years”.
“We became a Patron member a number of years ago because Wandsworth Chamber is one of the strongest Chambers,” said Gareth.
“We work with a lot of local businesses and it’s good for us to be involved with the local business community and, whilst it does bring us business, the support the Chamber offers is invaluable.”
Hosting several events with the Chamber has supported their growth by providing opportunities to showcase the services the business offers. One such event was held at the firm’s Battersea site, where they hired a big inflatable pub, which proved to be a popular choice.
London’s exclusive supercar dealer, Joe Macari, has a showroom at Access Self Storage’s Wandsworth site and they held an event with the Chamber too. The company also sponsors several Chamber events.
“Wandsworth Chamber has a lot of members and hosting or sponsoring events gives us the opportunity to reach a wider audience
and people can find out more about how we can support them,” he added.
“I would advise any new members to take advantage of as many meetings at the Chamber as possible.”
“It’s about building up contacts and relationships with other members. It’s not always the person you have a coffee with who needs your business but someone they know and, if they like you, they will remember you and refer you. We all work collectively together. It’s a good way to raise awareness of what you offer. Make the most of all the events and all the Chamber has to offer members, but don’t go to networking events with your sales head on and just push your business card at them and expect a sale. Let those connections build naturally and always remember that the businesses you talk to might be able to help your business to grow by what they offer too.”
“The Chamber can also provide useful legal and business support to members. They helped us with a planning issue on one of our sites.”
“And, if you become a Patron, other benefits include featuring in the Chamber’s Business Connexions magazine and advertising opportunities on the Chamber’s website.”

A new town centre app has arrived in Wandsworth Town
Wandsworth Town Business Improvement District (BID) is bringing a brand-new digital town centre hub - called WE ARE WANDSWORTH TOWN - to the heart of the community to bring local businesses, residents and visitors closer together.
The hub, powered by Loqiva, will support businesses across Wandsworth Town by delivering a digital platform to promote offers, products, discounts, and more, connecting with the 300,000+ residents who call Wandsworth home.
The We Are Wandsworth Town app is available to download now and will connect people with local businesses, allowing them to browse what Wandsworth Town has to offer as well as take advantage of special offers.
Businesses will be able to use the app to boost their profile and drive footfall, while also connecting directly with their customer base to reward loyalty, promote events, and share updates.
The data compiled by We Are Wandsworth Town will enable the BID to gather important
information on footfall and economic activity in the town centre, which can then be used to target and support specific areas and drive engagement.
“We wanted to create a digital service that would bring people and business together in the heart of Wandsworth Town,” said Lauren Furey, Marketing Manager at Wandsworth Town BID.
“We Are Wandsworth Town will create a new level of connectivity by enabling businesses to engage directly with existing customers and attract new customers. We recognise that Wandsworth Town has so much to offer, for people of all ages, and so we wanted to deliver an initiative that would highlight that, while also promoting our neighbourhood as a great place to live, work and play.”
James Mbanefo, Manager of Wandsworth Town BID, adds, “In our current Business Plan we committed to delivering a ‘buy local’ scheme that would encourage people to
spend within their local economy, and we also promised to deliver tools to empower businesses to make strategic decisions. We Are Wandsworth Town delivers on that commitment, and we’re excited to bring it to life for the community.”
Marcus Chidgey, Director and Co-Founder of Loqiva, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to launch Loqiva technology in what is such an exciting and upcoming area in London. Wandsworth is a young and dynamic location and the BID’s decision to implement our technology shows their understanding of exactly the type of tools that their ambitious levy payers require, and how to engage with their community.”
Wandsworth Town BID is a not-for-profit partnership voted in by local businesses to improve the town centre and drive footfall in the area. The BID, which started in 2014, is currently in its second term, and you can view their 2022-2027 Business Plan online.

CHAMPIONS OF WANDSWORTH celebrate 40th anniversary by giving back
Managing Director Alex Davey and Sales Director Daniel Lucas talk to Sarah Dale about the growth of Chamber Patron Ansador Fire & Security Solutions and how their 40th anniversary was the catalyst for giving back to their employees, clients and the Wandsworth community.
Founded in 1982 by Francis Davey, Ansador
Fire & Security Solutions celebrated its 40th anniversary last year.
Ansador is now run by Alex Davey who started as an engineering apprentice 15 years ago. Since then, he has worked his way up through the organisation working in each and every department, ultimately completing a successful management buyout in 2019. Based at The Old Coppermill in Earlsfield, London, Ansador is one of the very few privately owned organisations of its size in today’s market.
18 | Business Connexions THE BIG INTERVIEW
Ansador are a Life Safety & Security Systems integrator, supporting corporate clients across the UK and overseas. Their services include Electronic Security, Fire Alarm & Converged Network system solutions. They provide 24-hour, 365-days-a-year technical support.
Ansador has grown from humble beginnings in 1982 to become one of the most successful medium enterprise organisations, employing in excess of 100+ full time staff as well as a dedicated business coach, senior leadership team who run the day-to-day and a board of Directors who focus on client relationships and setting strategic goals.
“We wanted to take the business to the next level, capitalising on the solid foundations and name that has always been synonymous with quality work from a dedicated in-house team. Since taking over, we have grown year on year” said Alex, who was born and still resides in Wandsworth. “Perhaps our unique offering is the way in which we transact with our clients and ultimately deliver an enterprise solution without the politics of dealing with a large corporate animal. Our mantra is It’s not just what we do, it’s how we do it.”
Sales Director and business partner Daniel Lucas, has 18 years’ experience in the life safety and security market. He said: “Our route to market is via Account Directors who utilise our industry leading internal teams from Estimating & Design through to Commercial, Delivery and our Aftercare & Professional Services Teams. In essence, we are growing organically through word of mouth and business referral so we must be doing something right!”
The company’s headquarters and in-house teams are based in Wandsworth and the organisation joined the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce as a Patron member last year.
“It was our 40th anniversary and we wanted to become better established in the local community to see what else we could do to support Wandsworth, especially after COVID with so many SME’s suffering.” said Alex.
“The intention behind becoming a Patron of Wandsworth Chamber was looking at other ways to give back, for example we have
recently engaged with another local business who create bespoke branded cupcakes for client meetings and staff parties.”
“We took the decision to grow our London HQ and leverage technology to work closer with our teams on site in the UK and across the globe,” remarked Daniel.
They have completed a significant amount of work in the local Wandsworth community with clients including Wandsworth Borough Council, Springfield University Hospital, St George’s University Hospital and South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust. Ansador also work closely with several government departments with various projects that cannot unfortunately be disclosed.
They were delighted to win the Best Large Business of the Year Award 2023 at the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.
“We have a long history in Wandsworth and are a big champion of the local area,” said Alex. “There are good links from Wandsworth to Central London and from the Home Counties to our London HQ for staff working with us and it has great access to the rest of the UK and abroad.”
“I’m a Wandsworth resident, so it’s a 10-minute walk to work for me in the morning. The proximity to the City is a huge plus as the majority of our clients either have their UK HQ offices situated there or our Landlord sites with estates throughout Central London and further afield.”
They are keen to support local charities and have already taken part in various Haven House Children’s Hospice’s charity golf days and are part of a business volunteering scheme so employees can volunteer on workdays at local charities and organisations.
Ansador is also concluding the details to become a significant corporate sponsor of its client, Great Ormond Street Hospital.
As fathers of young children, both Alex and Daniel knew they wanted to support all the local hospital’s vital work.
The organisation is also keen to plug the skills gap in the sector and started an apprenticeship programme back in 2017 geared primarily to younger individuals leaving School, College or University. They also opened a reskilling programme that is open to those leaving the Armed Services and those changing trades who possess basic transferable skill sets.
“There is a huge skills shortage, not just in our sector but throughout other industries which is why we have invested heavily in both development schemes,” added Alex and Daniel. The organisation also works with Wandsworth Borough Council to offer and encourage local apprenticeships.
They offer four apprenticeships a quarter which are always heavily oversubscribed. Once you start with Ansador, you are given a ‘buddy’ so every apprentice is paired with a senior member of staff.
Daniel added: “We invest significantly into our internal teams. If they have the same values and ambition to succeed then we owe it them to promote new leaders. We also encourage people into other roles within the organisation, where their skillsets may work best for them and offer further career progression.”
The approach is obviously working well for the business which has a 93% retention rate for employees continuing with the organisation for five or more years.
They have a business coach who works through the HR department and completes psychological profiles of every employee which has helped foster a team of individuals that are not only at the top of their game but share the same cultural values as their peers working to a common goal. They also hold monthly one-to-ones with each employee so everyone has a voice and can create change.
“In an organisation like Ansador who are going through fantastic continual changes it is imperative that we keep our lines of communication clear, succinct and regular! Afterall that’s what we have always been great at!,” noted Alex.
As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, they gathered the whole team of more than 100+ employees at AFC Wimbledon Cherry Red Records Stadium to look back at the past, present a clear plan for the future and congratulate some long-term staff - some who have been working at Ansador for 26+ years! They also take the opportunity to encourage everybody at their annual town hall meetings to share their ideas on how best the organisation could boost staff wellbeing, present highlights of the year and recognise those who have gone above and beyond. As a result of this open forum, a number of changes have been implemented this year by staff members who suggested them back in January.
Initiatives they have adopted include private healthcare, sabbatical/gap year, 24-hour access to a doctor, cycle to work scheme, gym membership, the list goes on! To ensure they continue to grow organically, Alex and Daniel agree it is essential that their customer service remains the best in the industry which is why they have been heavily investing in their Customer Care Team who work between Sales, Delivery and Aftercare.
Daniel said: “We have grown from a small to a medium-sized Enterprise business, but we must continue to deliver the absolute best levels of customer care and are always looking at ways to better it.”
“It’s about working closely with clients, meeting them regularly in person, keeping up to date with industry trends and imparting advice when required. It’s all about our aftercare teams being proactive with information and engaging regularly. People want value for money and they want to know they’re in safe hands - not being sold to by a ‘Business Development Executive’ who doesn’t know the technicalities of what they are selling. Technological advancements across the Life Safety and Security market are becoming smarter all the time with advances in technology being released almost weekly. For us, it really is about leveraging existing technology and not always recommending upgrades when they might not be the best route forward.”

Fixing people problem is key to tackling inflation
A survey of almost 5,000 UK firms of all sectors and sizes by the British Chambers (BCC) has revealed that recruitment issues remain a significant factor in the business community.
The latest Quarterly Recruitment Outlook (QRO) shows that the percentage of firms facing recruitment difficulties has fallen just three percentage points from the historical high of 82% in Q4 2022. This has now remained above 75% for the past two years.
Attempted recruitment in Q1 was virtually unchanged from the previous quarter, with 60% of those surveyed looking to find staff (59% in Q1 2023).
While recruitment difficulties are being experienced across the economy, the construction and engineering and the hospitality sectors were the most likely to report problems with 86% of firms reporting difficulties (up from 81% and 83% respectively in Q1). This is closely followed by manufacturing on 81% (83% Q1) and then professional services on 77% (79% Q1).
Of the firms in the construction and engineering sector facing recruitment difficulties, 76% faced difficulties in finding skilled manual/technical workers. However, for hospitality businesses that struggled to recruit, 69% faced difficulties in finding semi/unskilled workers.
Just over a quarter of firms (27%) reported an increase in their training investment plans over the past three months (the same as Q1), while 14% reported a drop (also the same).
The data shows that the main factor for increasing prices is now coming from wages rather than utility bills or raw materials.
With concern around utility costs dropping, 63% report these as an issue (74% in Q3 2022). The number of firms reporting labour costs as a source of pressure has risen to 68% (67% in Q1) and is now the lead cost pressure, although, overall, the percentage of firms expecting their prices to rise fell below 50% for the first time since Q3 in 2021.
Jane Gratton, Head of People Policy at the BCC, said: “The tight labour market continues to ramp up wage costs, fuelling inflation, and creating huge difficulties for businesses. With the Bank of England expected to increase interest rates again, it is vital that Government boosts efforts to increase the supply of labour to help break the cycle.”
“Firms are being squeezed on all sides. With 36.8 million jobs in the economy there are more employment opportunities than ever before. But we also have low unemployment, and over a million jobs
are currently left unfilled. Firms cannot fulfil order books and are turning down new work.”
“They are caught in a vicious circle where the lack of people holds back growth and reduces opportunities for investment, including in training – part of the long-term solution.”
“While firms can do more to make workplaces more flexible and jobs easier to access, the Government must redouble its efforts to support people into work.”
“But where there is evidence of critical national skills shortages, that are crippling business sectors and pushing up wages, the Government must look again at the role immigration can play in easing difficulties in the short term. This includes making sure the criteria for the Shortage Occupations List are proportionate and realistic, as well as expanding access to youth mobility schemes.”
“Access to a skilled workforce is a major concern for businesses across the UK. The longer these shortages continue, the more long-term damage is caused. Government has made a start but has yet to shift the dial. If we are to get the economy growing again, we need more action, now.”

DON’T DELAY, BOOK YOUR CHRISTMAS PARTY TODAY
CELEBRATE THIS CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR AT...
A COLOURFUL CELEBRATION OF MARDI GRAS, LIMBO, CALYPSO, FLAMBOYANT COSTUMES, EXOTIC FOOD AND CRAZY COCKTAILS.
SMARTPARTIESUK SMARTPARTIES.CO.UK @SMART.PARTIES
C hristmas is just around the corner!
With the festive season quickly sneaking up on us, Smart Christmas Parties are gearing up for another lively run of spectacular exclusive and shared parties. Smart holds the keys to nine of London’s most popular Christmas party venues.
Director of Ticketed Sales, Alex Ryan, reveals all about the benefits of celebrating at a shared Christmas party, and how they bring their extraordinary ideas to life.
Tell us a little bit about how you got into the Christmas party business…
“Our CEO boasts nearly 35 years of experience in the Christmas party industry. Fuelled by his passion for catering and events, he founded the idea of providing everything for the perfect Christmas party under one roof, leading to the birth of ‘The Christmas Company’ in 1991. From then, his idea continued to flourish, resulting in the emergence of Smart Christmas Parties in 2001. The company vision has withstood the test of time, and his enthusiasm for Christmas burns as brightly today as it did back then!”
Why do you offer shared parties? What are the benefits to shared?
“We believe that shared Christmas parties are a fantastic way to get your employees into the festive spirit! Particularly for small businesses dealing with tight budgets, it can be difficult to host something incredible for a small group. With shared parties, you can experience the essence of a bigger event and enjoy the perks of fine dining and high-quality entertainment, without blowing the budget. They are also a great opportunity to connect and network with other, like-minded companies, and create useful connections that you can bring back to the workplace.”
Your parties always have a theme, how do you decide on these?
“It’s very much a joint effort between both the ticketed and venue sales team, our CEO, and the marketing team. Using previous client feedback, emerging trends, and our own wacky ideas, we come up with a selection of potential contenders and present them to our CEO who ultimately has the final say on the matter!”
Carnivale sounds incredible! How long does it take to install?
“The process of installing the venue theming surprisingly only takes three days, but the groundwork for developing the ideas begins as early as the Christmas before! The initial phases involve developing the branding, and building mood boards, before heading to our external set designers and production companies who help bring our ideas to fruition. Our event management arm of the business, Smart Live, then coordinates all the entertainment aspects of the night, whilst our in-house caterers Moving Venue carefully curate a three-course menu to compliment the chosen theme. It really is a team effort!”
You mentioned Electric Xmas, what was the initial thinking behind it?
“The initial concept came from our vision to create something different from many of the Christmas parties in today’s market. We wanted to lean away from the traditional Christmas parties that we have offered in the past and provide a fresh and captivating way for people to celebrate the holiday season. We also wanted to create a more inclusive experience that everyone can enjoy. This is where the idea of Electric Xmas came from, and we hope to create a visually stunning and immersive experience that goes beyond your conventional party.”
They both sound like so much fun! Can anyone attend?
“Yes, it’s not just companies, we offer tables from 8 guests upwards for Carnivale and Electric Xmas, so if you have a group of friends willing to get together then of course! We also run a shared Carnivale NYE party with no minimum numbers, so if you’re in need of some plans, look no further.”
And lastly, how do you guys celebrate your Christmas party?
“It must be pretty epic… One thing Smart knows how to do is party! As the Christmas season is our busiest, we wait until after the New Year to let our hair down, and to do so, we host the ultimate Christmas party for all those in the hospitality industry! At Smart, we only put on Christmas parties that we would want to attend ourselves, and that’s why we have hosted Hospitality Rocks at our venue Evolution London for the last 7 years. It truly is the most spectacular night of our calendar, and with this year’s party also being Carnivale-themed, I have a feeling this is going to be the best one yet!”
Prices start at £100 per person.

Cognitive Stimulation: The various sensory inputs in sensory theatre can provide cognitive stimulation, encouraging sensory integration and cognitive development.
Communication and Expression: The use of visual and tactile elements can help individuals convey emotions and thoughts that might be difficult to express through traditional verbal communication.
Emotional Regulation: The sensory experiences can help reduce anxiety and stress, leading to a more relaxed state of mind.
Inclusivity: Sensory theatre is designed to be accessible to a wide range of audiences, including those with disabilities. This promotes inclusivity and helps break down barriers that might prevent individuals from participating in cultural activities.
Sponsoring a snowflake costs £1,500 and in addition to being thanked in our ‘Let it Snow’ webpage, your logo will also feature on our ‘Let it Snow’ banners on the outside of the building throughout December.

The art of wellbeing
MA&Y was founded in September 2014 by husband-and-wife team, Julian Johnson, and Gaia Persico. Ever since then our goal has been to offer a safe space for everyone to feel welcome, whether brand new to exercise or professional athletes, an environment where all can progress at their own pace. The team proudly knows all of the members personally, which means we can tailor classes and training according to individual needs.
We have helped students from all backgrounds become fitter, more centred, calm and relaxed, especially those dealing with extra personal challenges. However, most join to be part of our friendly and sympathetic community.
Whether wanting a more relaxing breath and meditation class or an active, cardio based, self-defence session, our students have become empowered with life skills to help develop mentally and physically. We always wanted to help people through health and wellbeing, and the biproduct of this is that we not only have an amazing teaching team, who have embraced this vision, but also supporters who wish to join us on this journey.
Through teaching group classes, private tuition and corporate events, we have built up a following of support and a solid membership base of nearly 250 students; some who have been training with us from the beginning. We have always gone the extra mile in customer service and looked after our members by offering free classes, events and socials throughout the year. Along with our specialisms, we carved a niche in the fitness and leisure market that provided something a little different for those who were ‘bored with the gym’.
MA&Y is also a proud supporter of our chosen charity Women’s Aid. We continue offering free Women’s only self-defence workshops and through the years have raised awareness and over £2200 to this amazing cause.
Our schedule evolves to suit the needs of our members and we currently have classes in Vinyasa Yoga, Gentle Yoga suitable for Pregnancy, Post Natal Yoga, Pilates, Krav Maga, Women’s Self Defence, Fitness, Personal Training and from
the ages of 4, both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Choi Kwang Do. We also offer regular workshops, seminars with world renown speakers and our very own 18-month Yoga Teacher Training course accredited with Yoga Alliance Professionals.
In March 2021 we opened our first professional full-time studio in Earlsfield (opposite the station). The building was old and the property had been in a state of disrepair for 12 months. After four months of 12-hour days, seven days a week of renovation and refurbishment we officially opened our bespoke club in July 2021. We are honoured that this has become an oasis in the heart of Earlsfield, a place to escape the hustle and bustle of London living and a welcoming centre created specifically for everyone’s health and wellbeing.

Starting UP
Q1 In a few words tell us a bit about your business?
Strike is a boutique bowling alley with four Tenpin Bowling lanes and three Duckpin Bowling lanes. We also have three Smart Dartboards, two Shuffleboards and a Bar Billiards table.
On top of the games, there are two bars serving up creative cocktails, tank-fresh lager, and a selection of locally brewed craft ales, as well as a contemporary restaurant that focuses on classic diner-style food with a modern twist.
Q2 What gives your business ‘the x-factor’?
Customer service. We have created an environment in which the staff are able to have fun whilst they work, which results in an infectious energy that always rubs off on the customer.
By a long way, our team is the element of the business that I get complimented on the most.
Q3 What motivated you to set up in business?
After driving my children to countless birthday parties at tacky bowling alleys miles away from home, I saw a gap in the market.
You should not have to drive into central London to get a premium bowling experience. After doing some research, I found out that there was not a single bowling alley, tacky or premium, anywhere in Southwest London, which sounds ridiculous when you think about it, so I got to work. And the rest is history…
Q4 What do you like most about working as a start-up?
Creating something from scratch. There is nothing more rewarding.
Q5 What has been your greatest business success to date?
Turning a profit in our first year. Completely unexpected.
Q6 What has been your lowest moment?
The place was still a building site the day before we opened. I kid you not, a full-on building site. In the two weeks before we launched, I was getting an average of about 2 hours sleep a night, some nights, no sleep at all, which really took its toll.
Q7 In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next 5 years?
More venues. We have started to look for new sites already and hope to have three more by this time next year. Within 5 years, we aim to have between 15 and 20 venues spanning multiple countries.
Q8 What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business?
Do your due diligence. Research, research, research. If your idea requires a physical site, before you sink any money into it, hire a good quantity surveyor to provide you with an accurate costing for the build. Things can get out of hand quickly. But most of all, trust in your idea – you had it for a reason.

ASIF SARANGI Founder of SAR Computing
Q1 Who are you?
I am Asif Sarangi, Founder of SAR Computing. Born in Paris, I decided to move to London about 20 years ago in order to pursue my dream and it ’s only in 2007 that, I thought it was the right time for me to open my company.
Q2 What’s your business all about?
If we look around, we are surrounded by technology; constantly disturbed by all the devices that are out there and unfortunately, electronic devices are less reliable than the old fashioned pen and paper. On average, a person who focuses on business growth will spend between 10 to 15% of their time solving IT issues and that is where, I believe, SAR Computing can add tremendous value. The entire concept behind my business is to help individuals and other businesses thrive without having to spend an enormous amount of time fxing IT issues. By becoming your IT Partner, our primary objectives are to prevent, support, protect and give individuals and businesses the boost needed to be able to increase efficiency in their respective business models by focusing on what’s more important to them.
Q3 Three words to describe yourself?
Selfless, Reliable, Doer
Q4 How did you survive during this pandemic?
As with many businesses, we certainly struggled and came across a few bumps during the pandemic. There is a saying “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” and, let’s just say that I learnt this lesson the hard way. Pre-Covid, my business was primarily exposed to the hospitality
sector and as you know, this sector su ered the most during the pandemic, which unfortunately had an immense impact on my business. During that time, I also had a little one who was born so I needed to nd a quick solution to turn-around my situation. I started researching various industries that were and still are in dire need of reliable IT services and decided that it was best for me to also, go through a full rebranding of my company in order to appeal to the wider market. Today, we have customers in the nancial and educational sectors, as well as a number of small SMEs and charitable organisations. The same values have been kept at the forefront of the business; we compete in quality of service, but also on reliability, trust, and loyalty!
Q5 Advise our readers on the essential steps against Cyber Security
Cyber Security is one of the hottest topics! The Cyber Security threats are constant and there are a number of very essential security awareness steps that everyone should take seriously. (1) Never use the same password for your work email and any other applications. (2) Stick to three words, numbers and a character as your password. (3) Never use a public network, use a VPN or mobile hotspot from your mobile. (4) Always update your devices and (5) Use a malware and antivirus protection.
Q6 Why use an IT Company?
At the core, every business has some degree of IT embedded into it. Whichever stage your business is at, IT support requirements or IT advice will be required at one point. Yes, you can use Google, ChatGPT or ask friends when infrequent issues arise but generally speaking, a lack of constant, fast and
Support & Cyber Security Expert
reliable IT support may be detrimental to business growth. Why not partner with an IT company from the start of your journey? Not only will they become your main point of contact, but they will be able to gain a profound understand-ing of your work methods, the way your business runs and be able to ensure that all the right preventions are in place, which will, in turn, increase overall efficiency. Over the last couple of years, I have seen businesses being in two-minds when deciding whether to invest in IT, only to realise it ’s too late i.e. breach already taken place or after a huge nancial lost.
