Dr Robert Quarshie Head of Materials and Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network

About the Knowledge Transfer Network Connecting people who accelerate innovation. The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) is the UK’s innovation network. It brings together businesses, entrepreneurs, academics and funders to develop new products, processes and services.

Investment collaborations: Fostering relations between funders (private and public) and innovators requiring investment to develop new products and grow their business.

It does this by initiating, facilitating and building the following collaborations.

Informing and connecting

Strategic collaborations: Gathering and analysing information on markets, the technologies and other factors affecting them; working with industrial and research partners to develop technology roadmaps and appropriate innovation strategies.

Working closely with businesses, entrepreneurs and research institutes means that it provides ongoing and independent insight and information to government and policy makers. This directly informs strategy and investment programmes, with more effective results for the UK’s long-term competitiveness.

Creative collaborations: Bringing ‘problem holders’ and those with innovation challenges together with the businesses and researchers who have the talent and technology to develop viable solutions. Cross-sector collaborations: Encouraging those from different research fields and industrial sectors to share knowledge, generate commercial ideas and apply expertise in new ways. Business collaborations: Taking those with new ideas and technologies to the clients, distributors and platforms that can help to scale them up into world-beating products.

6

The KTN connects businesses, value chains, entrepreneurs, innovators and investors - helping businesses to identify and develop the ideas, expertise and technologies, wherever they reside, which have the potential to be worldbeating products, processes and services. It helps to unlock the expertise and ideas within universities and institutes, helping academic researchers to connect to markets and convert their knowledge into viable products, processes and services with economic, social and environmental value.

Core values and strengths The KTN is not a funding body and has no regulatory powers. But it is able to achieve all of the above because of the following strengths and values central to how it works. Breadth and depth of knowledge: The KTN covers industries ranging from biotechnology to designer fashion, and is made up of staff with deep sectoral knowledge - both as researchers and within a commercial environment. Independence: Although working closely with businesses, the KTN is not an industry group, government body or lobbying organisation beholden to any particular interests. As such it is a trusted intermediary, committed to innovation, and working with everyone, big or small, commercial or public, wanting to achieve this. Strategic partnerships: The KTN has strong, well-established relationships with commercial and academic innovators, as well as major support and investment agencies - both nationally and at the European level. Through these it is able to make things happen, facilitating the projects and investment programmes where they are most needed. For more information about the KTN visit: www.ktn-uk.co.uk

Energy Harvesting Special Interest Group The Energy Harvesting Special Interest Group (SIG) has been operational for more than two years and has over 450 members. During this time energy harvesting activity has grown substantially in the UK and expanded internationally.

The energy harvesting market continues to grow, driving innovation in harvesting technologies, increasing the popularity of wireless sensing and putting relentless pressure on semiconductor manufacturers to improve the power efficiency of their electronic devices. New low-power microcontrollers and wireless modules consume only microwatts of power when in an idle state. This dramatically increases the field of applications for wireless sensors and other devices, which are potentially powered by energy harvesters. New types of consumer devices such as smart watches and wearable physical activity monitors are becoming increasingly popular. With the power requirements of devices and the capabilities of energy harvesters converging, new opportunities will inevitably emerge. These new application areas will be addressed by the Energy Harvesting SIG as they arise.

10

Working closely with the Innovate UK, the Energy Harvesting SIG has been involved in scoping and promoting three competitions for funding: • Energy Harvesting for Autonomous Sensing (2012) • Enabling the Internet of Sensors (2013) • Energy Harvesting for Autonomous Electronics (2014) International activities include three international trade missions and two international workshops organized in 2012-2013. The Energy Harvesting SIG is a vibrant community of academics and industrialists, offering a great opportunity for networking, innovation support and a source of information about energy harvesting technologies and their applications. Members also benefit from free access to a number of comprehensive reports examining market needs and energy harvesting capabilities. Surface Engineering and Advanced Coatings Special Interest Group Innovate UK launched the Surface Engineering and Advanced Coatings Special Interest Group (SEAC SIG) in May 2013. It is led by the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) with advice and guidance from an industrial advisory group containing strong representation from academia.

12

Amongst those involved in surface engineering and advanced coatings there is an active culture of innovation, with new products and processes continually being developed. Innovation in this area benefits a diverse range of sectors, which includes aerospace, automotive, healthcare and the built environment. Surface engineering and advanced coatings technologies often provide an effective solution where other approaches fail - they can enhance product performance, improve the efficiency of materials and help components adapt to changes in their environment. Previous KTN reviews had highlighted that there were significant market opportunities for surface engineering and advanced coatings technologies and that the UK is very capable in this area, with healthy opportunities in the entire supply chain. Innovate UK wished to extend this work, examining more market sectors and more technology areas. The SEAC SIG was therefore charged with conducting a further study, with the ultimate aim of informing investment decisions intended to address any gaps hindering progress in the development and commercialisation of these technologies.

The SEAC SIG held a number of community engagement workshops, as well as inviting those from the sector to submit their views online. After an extensive review of all the information accrued, the SEAC SIG confirmed that the UK has the potential to provide a full supply chain for surface engineering and advanced coatings technologies, with a major end-user presence that is supported by suppliers of world-class products and services, as well as researchers. The study also highlighted that suppliers need to further develop their capabilities if they are to meet the exacting standards demanded by customers involved in high value manufacturing. From its in-depth investigation, the SEAC SIG produced a report entitled ‘Time for a Strategic Change: UK Surface Engineering and Advanced Coatings Industry’. This report makes a number of recommendations to help the UK maximise its potential in this area. Members of the KTN can download a copy of this report free of charge. The Knowledge Transfer Network - case studies Securing a four-year European PilotManu project for Centre for Process Innovation Following recommendation by the Knowledge Transfer Network, the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) has been chosen to work on the €5.3m pan-European PilotManu project. Funded by the European Commission, PilotManu is an FP7 programme under the coordination of MBN Nanomaterialia SPA and consisting of 10 consortium partners located across Europe. The project seeks to lower the barriers to market for the use of highly innovative advanced materials by scaling up the current research-scale manufacturing facility into an industrial pilot line. This will increase the productivity of the technology, enabling the supply of costeffective and high-quality materials, which will then be evaluated in several different commercial applications. The project will demonstrate the

technological and economical viability of the pilot line by incorporating these advanced materials into coatings, abrasive tools and additive manufacturing applications. Europe has identified within its innovation priorities the necessity to scale up the most promising material production technology to pilot production level in order to progress towards industrial manufacturing using cutting-edge materials in novel new processes. Manufacturing facilities for the production of advanced and nano materials by high energy ball milling

(HEBM) currently suffer from low productivity and high cost - a key barrier for its application in the wider market. PilotManu will cover this manufacturing gap by scaling up and building a new pilot production line for the production of nanomaterials and advanced materials, based on the consortium’s IPR and expertise. Dr Keith Robson, director of formulation at CPI, states: “The new improved pilot line will look to reduce the power consumption by 50% and scale up the production process by a factor of ten, which enables the supply of affordable material for industry consumption.”

The KTN helps The University of Manchester and European Thermodynamics Ltd set up UK Thermoelectric Network (TEMPEST) The Knowledge Transfer Network is pleased to announce its support for the first UK Thermoelectric Network - TEMPEST, funded through the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Thermoelectric materials convert thermal energy into electrical voltage and vice versa, and hence can be used for harvesting waste heat. The TEMPEST Network will serve as a focal point by bringing together individuals in different disciplines to define and address the

16

considerable research challenges presented in realising the potential offered by thermoelectrics. The initial membership of the network includes 13 universities (representing physics, chemistry, materials and engineering disciplines), the National

Physical Laboratory, seven industrial partners covering all aspects of the phermoelectric module design and manufacture supply chain, plus a large number of end users. In total, over 32 individual organisations will be represented.

New nanomedicine intelligence start-up: NanoScientium The Knowledge Transfer Network is pleased to announce the foundation of a new start-up company: NanoScientium. This resulted from a focus group meeting held last year at the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC) entitled ‘Adoption of Nanotechnology Pharma: Pathways to Commercialise Nanomedicines’. It brought together relevant pharmaceutical industry experts, regulators and academics to scope out a plan that would serve to catalyse an increase in the number of nanomedicine projects in the UK. Dr Felicity Sartain, founder and director of NanoScientium, states: “One of the key aspects that arose from the meeting was that there is a lot of information and data openly available in this space, thus significant value would be brought to this community if this information could be harnessed and translated to specific company needs. Consequently, with support provided by both Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst and the Knowledge Transfer Network, we set up NanoScientium to provide comprehensive analysis of technical, clinical and market information for those investing capital or resources into

nanomedicines, nanosimilars or medical devices.” Martino Picardo, CEO of Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, adds: “Both SBC and NanoScientium share a common interest and ambition to explore opportunities in the big data and convergent medical technologies area; we see each other as excellent partners.” NanoScientium provides evidencebased assessments of nanotechnologies to determine their potential as nanomedicines. By doing this, NanoScientium enables a route to

market strategies, including clinical and regulatory pathways, illustrates technology or company positions in the competitive landscape, and values their markets. Dr Alec Reader, a nanotechnology expert from the Knowledge Transfer Network said: “The global nanomedicine market is anticipated to grow to $130.9 billion by 2016 - and we believe that NanoScientium’s provision of evidence-based assessments of nanomedicines by senior experts in the field will positively impact the way that investors, and the public in general, look at these new disruptive technologies.”

UK graphene company celebrates UK and international growth Successful UK graphene company, Moorfield, has used joint events from the Knowledge Transfer Network and JEMI to educate companies on how they can revolutionise their manufacturing capabilities and manufacture graphene commercially in-house. Graphene and carbon nanotubes have been the focus of huge research efforts due to their unique electrical, mechanical and structural properties. Thanks to these properties, their introduction is expected to prove disruptive for a huge range of applications. In addition, exotic characteristics of these materials mean they will enable new types of devices and products. Working with the Knowledge Transfer Network as well as JEMI, together with funding from the Innovate UK, Moorfield and its UK distributor, IDB Technologies, have been able to promote UK graphene capabilities to international audiences, resulting in a number of new UK and international projects. Their product, the nanoCVD, was developed using a Innovate UK ‘Proof of Concept’ award, which is specifically designed to allow companies to cross the ‘valley of

death’ when developing an initial idea into a commercial product. Dr Jon Edgeworth, product manager at Moorfield, explains: “We’re delighted with the interest in our graphene technology and products. Working with Innovate UK, the Knowledge Transfer Network, JEMI and IDB Technologies, we have been able to demonstrate the strength of UK graphene expertise and in particular how our nanoCVD system can enable companies to manufacture graphene themselves, quickly, easily and in a cost-effective and repeatable manner.” The Moorfield nanoCVD system is also being used by Professor Monica Craciun at Exeter University to deliver a significant rise in productivity in the research of her group, as well as that of the EPSRC Exeter-Bath Centre for Graphene Science.

She explains: “Typically graphene films used to take eight hours to produce but using Moorfield’s nanoCVD system, we have been able to reduce this to about 30 minutes and on substrates that are around 1-4 cm2.” Edgeworth adds: “The nanoCVD system brings graphene capability into a lab or company very quickly for their own research purposes. The system is very easy to use and delivers very reproducible production, not only for academic use but also for our growing commercial clients. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is an excellent method for the synthesis of high-quality graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Of various methods available, CVD approaches are considered particularly promising for future industrial production, given their scalability.”

Nano forms of many chemicals are finding their way into many different market sectors, including consumer goods. Key to the proliferation of nanobased products in this major market sector is acceptance by the general public - and the ongoing growth in volume and value of nano-based products is extremely encouraging. Currently the main uses for nanotechnologies in food and drink are in packaging and in the health/nutraceutical supplements areas. It is expected that the use of nanotechnologies will not only increase within these two areas but will also expand into other areas such as ingredient functionality, emulsions and sensors. Nano-enabled coatings have also been widely championed over the past decade, with applications including UV protection, abrasion resistance and selfcleaning surfaces. Products are currently in use within the domestic environment, the automotive and aerospace sectors, and in a number of engineering applications.

The development of instruments for the investigation of the nanoscale world has been a long-standing strength of the UK. From the development of electron microscopes over 30 years ago to the development of nano (ultrafine) particle seizers, successful companies have grown up to provide a good steady export trade that is extremely valuable to the UK. Measurement at the nanoscale is often fraught with difficulties due to the very close relationship between physical matter and electromagnetic radiation. Measurement of material properties becomes very complex and de-convoluting these from the measurement technique itself is extremely demanding. Understanding, mapping and predicting material properties makes it possible to control manufacturing processes so that new products can be delivered at economic prices whilst meeting a necessary degree of conformity. An example would be the production of carbon nanomaterials such as graphene. Underpinning physical tools, published standards and protocols are just as important. They provide authoritative frameworks on best practice, guidance and authoritative information that has been argued and agreed upon, usually at the very highest levels of academia and industry.
