I stayed overnight. We slept in each other’s arms. I was with him in the morning when the cab arrived to take him to O’Hare and drop me at my place. We kissed again and again on my doorstep. I was strong and did not cry. Not even at the last, “I love you.”

Chapter Two Two weeks later, I was still cleaning rooms. Jayson was in

Dee Cee, just about to start classes at the college everyone just called “da House.”

I had so many reasons to be low. My job. My school.

And my man being seven hundred miles away.

First, work. Here’s some free advice from someone who’s cleaned thousands of rooms: Never lay down on a hotel bedspread. They barely ever get washed. Don’t walk barefoot on a hotel room carpet. The amount of stuff that won’t come out of the fibers with a vacuum is wack. Most important, wipe down the TV remote with alcohol before touching it. That woman in the lobby who had a herpes cold sore the size of Ghana could have just been watching Crystal’s talk show in your room. I’m just saying.

Words and phrases that may have stumped emergent readers have been eliminated. We recognize that students in the same classroom may not have equivalent reading skills, which is why the two levels appear virtually identical—

on the outside. Inside it’s a whole different look, with a larger font and extra white space, making these stories visually appealing with the aim to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and confidence. Classic fiction is 80 pages and classic Shakespeare is 110 pages.

The Day Gets Colder After Scrooge’s nephew left, two other men came in. They now stood, with their hats off, in Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in their hands, and bowed to him.

“Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,” said one of the gentlemen, looking at his list. “Tell me, sir—am I addressing Mr. Scrooge or Mr. Marley?”

“Mr. Marley has been dead these seven years,” Scrooge said. “He died seven years ago this very night.”

“Ah, well, Mr. Scrooge, then,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen. “It is good to help the poor. They suffer greatly in this festive season. Many cannot meet their needs.

Hundreds of thousands do not have common comforts, sir.”

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

Scrooge took a long look at his clerk.

He was another strange fellow. He had a large family and hardly any money. Yet he was always cheerful.

The clerk greeted two men who came in after Fred left. He showed them to Scrooge’s office.

“Good afternoon!” one of the men said.

Michelle Obama: I tell people that in our politics we measure by this very narrow definition . And a lot of times it’s years in Washington, or whether you’ve made a lot of money running a very large corporation . . . But what I say is that the measure of leadership is the choices that people made over a lifetime . . .

Katie Couric: Like what?

Michelle Obama: Community organizing . Now, when was the last time we’ve had a president of the United States who spent years working . . . with people who never had a voice and advocating for better streets, cleaner streets, safer communities?

Somebody who has worked as a . . . civil rights attorney, for years .

Barack could have been a partner at a major law firm . He could have worked on Wall Street . He probably could have been the CEO of a company . But he made choices to work on issues of justice, things like housing discrimination and employment discrimination . . . January 20, 2009, was an important day . On that day, Barack Obama became the 44th president of the United States . He was the first African American to hold that office . Two million people came to hear him speak .

Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961 . His mother was from Kansas . His father was from Kenya in Africa . His parents broke up when he was two . His mother later married a man from Indonesia . The family moved to that country . When he was ten, Obama went back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents . In his free time, he surfed and played basketball with his friends .

After college, Obama moved to Chicago, Illinois . There he worked with lowincome families . He took time off to go to law school . He went back to Chicago as a civil rights lawyer .

After a few years, Obama entered politics . He was a state senator for eight years .

Then he became a U .S . senator . He decided to run for president in 2007 . He won with 52 .7% of the vote . Four years later, he won again . During both terms, he worked for change in health care . He also worked to help the country through hard times . All the while, his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters were by his side .
