WEEK 1 & 2 PRECEDENT STUDY

NIGEL PECK CENTER FOR LEARNING John Wardle Architects , South Yarra, Victoria A prominent Melbourne secondary school occupies the site surrounded by important landscapes. Several historic trees along its main campus orientation preface the original bluestone Quadrangle building. Opposite its street frontage are the Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens. The brief for the building was to create a new campus entry, the school’s library facilities and supporting lecture theatre and seminar room spaces to forge a new campus heart focused on learning. "The near-white theatre form"

"Plan Sketch"

"bluestone structures on the southern facade"

" Oblique view of the undulating street facade of the learning centre."

"The west end of the building displays book stacks"

The design is for a series of inter-linked pavilions. Each link is glazed encouraging visibility through to the campus interior. The main entry frames a view of the bluestone Quadrangle building weaving the old and new together visually. Each pavilion has its own individual expression to the public on Domain Road.

REFLECTION

When I study Nigel peck center for learning through online information and my own sketch, I'm quite interest in how the design connect its nature and local history , goes to great lengths to capture the multitude of landscape and contextual views available and so becomes an outward focused learning environment orienting its students toward the city, its history and beyond. With nature environment, JWA adopt a series of giant oversized steel framed windows of varying shapes with overlaid fritting to glass within , on the main activbe body of the library. From the interior, the various glazed facade differing views to the outside transport and greenery of the historic garden beyond. Moreover, a solid but delicately detailed brick facade that symbolises the collection of books it encloses, make western side mounmental and abstract. It give me the inspiration about the choose of the facade on architectural design is really important ,it will enrich your basic concept ,also help you judge what kind of atomsphere that you want to create , make people learn or feel through your design . One more thing that I am quite interest in is the inside of the school, the dynamic path way and various shape of the staircase prmoise space permeability , also create interesting link, make Nigel Peck Centre is experienced as an intriguing architectural drama, where the unfolding hierarchy of events seamlessly resolves into a delightful and impressive array of inspiring places.

WEEK 2 & 3 “BOARD GAME ”DESIGN

REFLECTION In this week, we were separate in the different group to do the board game design, the rule of the game design is that we need to think about how to involve the information from university high school into the element of new board game element. This information includes site form, flow, function, and feature, In order to finish the task, we need to research and analysis site deeply, The result of the game design is quite interesting, everyone in the class plays each group's board game, then swap with each other. In order to get more useful information about the site.We also invite two of the high school student (as the guest )join us to play the game and share their school life experience. I really enjoy the process of the site analysis with the board game design. In the usual analysis of the site in class, I only researched online or go to the site visit, then pin up gave a presentation. But this activity not only adds a lot of interest to the learning process but also flexibly applies to other designs(things), making our analysis of site become more thorough. More importantly, this interesting activity reminded me that the school should be carried out in a happy environment when learning knowledge, which laid a profound foundation for me to design the new school facility with the theme of the amusement park.

REFLECTION Through the site analysis of the unihigh school, I found that there are many things that I can develop futher on site. The first point is through the site section drawing, we can find that the whole site is composed of some large and small square geometry(surrounding building) , which is relatively monotonous and boring. It also be found in the plan. In my site visit, I also felt that the overall campus environment had lost a kind of motivation and vitality (also reflected on the facade), which was lifeless. Therefore, it was worth reflecting that students learned in this environment. The second point is through the analysis of the street flow and the surrounding construction area (such as those places with more people, those places with less people, which places are noisy and which places are quiet), the position of the iconic department can be determined basically to respond the site facility. The third point is that the whole school gives me a feeling that it presents a state of semi-enclose, so I also consider design another semi-enclose building on the site to echo the original building and form a complete whole. In addition, we also asked uni high students to have a discussion in class to learn about the problems they felt in daily school life (Some felt that it was inconvenient for music to history classroom, while others felt that the entry near royal hospital was narrow). These are the points we need to reflect on and focus on Architecture is the most valuable means to solve local background problems and improve people's way of life, which is the motto I have always believed in as an architecture student. Therefore, after I find and reflect on problems, I need to think about how to solve them and improve them in my concept . The next page will be my preliminary thoughts and concept on my design.

WEEK 5 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

由 扫描全能王 扫描创建

REFLECTION After one - to -one consultation for our concept of school design, there are certain things I can develop further on my concept. The first is to explore the theme of the amusement park on the basis of some relevant historical background information, such as why people have been enjoying the amusement park since ancient times, what kind of things attracting them. Finding the reasons after can go as far as possible to imagine exploring, thereby to deepen the concept (such as the circus, people like to go to see the show because some people here can find their own different) . Moreover, about the sketch model, I want to use multiple geometries and some flow movement which inspired from an amusement park to express ideas. Through this feedback, I know I can do more sketch model and then go to different permutations and combinations together to do the experiment and see which is the most like and express the reason why I like it. I feel that my concept is a good start. In the next three months, I will continue to explore, to test it, and to make an interesting and satisfying design

THE RISK THEME PARK proposed for Daegu, South Korea In 2003, an arson attack on the underground rail claimed the lives of 120 civilians. According to Hone, the city's firefighters are undervalued, badly paid and poorly equipped. so, the risk theme park proposed for Daegu to help members of the public prepare themselves for different kinds of accidents. Resembling an amalgamation of different types of structures, the theme park would be constructed on top of an existing fire station and police station. There would be nine main levels, all assigned to a different type of risk.On the first floor up, visitors would be invited to jump off a roof, while the third and sixth floors would offer different experiences of fire. The seventh floor would recreate a monorail crash, and the eighth floor simulate the experience of a mountain rescue.

REFLECTION This project is an educational project to help members of the public prepare themselves for different kinds of accidents. I really like the design idea behind this project. Its intention is to let the people learn the responsibilities and efforts of firefighters through a kind of play and adventure. Each level is designed with a theme and a level of adventure, and the pathway is basically a process of looking at the jump, climbing, and descending to enrich the sense of entertainment. This reminds me of my own project in design. I consider some function zone such as the stadium, learning area, and general admin can be the "playing theme", and connect them together with climbing, jumping, or descending thought patterns so that people can enjoy these rich sports. My following design will continue to explore this point and test its feasibility of this idea

HELSINKI CENTRAL LIBRARY Radionica arhitekture ,Helsinki, Finland

REFLECTION

This is a awarded proposal for the Helsinki central library. The order of the structure is used to form the terraces and intimate spaces that flow one into another. The building is vertically zoned with functional units distributed over the “hanging gardens”, over open terraces or closed “living rooms” depending on the need to be in the “room” or in the “street”. The gardens are connected by horizontal corridors / bridges, stairways, escalators and elevators. While designing a library in the park we concluded that bringing the park into the library is just as important. This project is a very worthy project for me to study. In addition to multiple pathway/direction, there is a reasonable planning of functional areas, which enables it to connect to various perspectives of the "city". The functional area in it mostly used some regular geomertry, so it has things for me to refer to in terms of geometry arrangement, and the skecth will show idea abou this.

WEEK 6 MIDTERM PRESENTATION

REFLECTION After the mid-term presentation, I felt that my concept was feasible. In addition, the atmosphere I wanted to express in the design was also expressed in this rendering. But there are some problems need to consider and reflect on, the first is the inspiration and theme amusement park is good, but in terms of architectural design, I should consider people inside can feel and what to learn, not only have many pathway cross-connect together to form some interesting circulation. I still need to think more and improve the concept. Also, I consider Less "architectural entertainment" this time. In addition, some part of my design is not practical. For example, the learning area has 6 floors and the actual height is 21 meters. it's quite high and does not respond back the standards of Australian construction standard. The overall shape can then be rearranged according to actual functionality and need. In addition, I design own diagram to do the site analysis, in order to deepen the understanding of site more. This is a very rare chance which can get feedback, through this, I can know which level I am through this time. I can know what to do for the next stage, what is needed to improve, I plan to go to look again my journal to get what kind of things I really like, Moreover, I plan to read more about playful environment and amusement park books to explore more interesting things which I can get inspired to improve my design,

WEEK 7 RECONSIDER PROJECT & CONCEPT

NEW DOMINO PARK IN WILLIAMSBURG Williamsburg, Brooklyn

REFLECTION Multi-color, multi-geometric interspersed applications are the most intuitive impression and experience of making the entire area a playground. I think the use of different materials, such as metal perforated plates, wood, and aluminum alloys, is very interesting and organic. Architects have created a variety of facilities for tourists to play. Diversity is the most important feature of this type of design.

STOCKHOLM PUBLIC LIBRARY Stockholm, Sweden

REFLECTION I have visited the Stockholm Public Library, a bland buildmag. But after I entered, I was shocked by the circular inside and the internal faรงade full of bookshelves. A large open space is surrounded by books, with great learning strength and atmosphere. People who walked during the period were really like people who were swimming in the study ocean. So I think that when there is such a space in the school, it will greatly stimulate the atmosphere of learning. It will also be a highlight that impresses visitors.

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE OF UNIVERSITY OF PORTO Ă lvaro Siza, Porto, Portugal The school's original program included classroom facilities for 500 students, an auditorium, administration, an exhibition hall and a library. The architect decided to split this program into separate buildings. In the southern part, with views of the Douro River, they placed the classrooms and workshops. A striking feature of Siza's work, which masterfully frames the views he wishes the observer to appreciate, is strongly highlighted in this project and, above all, in the volumes of classrooms. In the northern part of the grounds, the linear volumes are more opaque, where Siza has implemented the most common features, which are the auditorium, the exhibition hall, the library, as well as the administrative part, closer to the nearby road.

REFLECTION

Throght the study of the project, I found that Siza believes that the student's learning process takes place in large public and private places outside the classroom. Such as in-between spaces, patios, and cafes In the design, Siza distinguishes the building geometry by function and connects the building geometry in series slopes or small squares. The using of the geomerty is also used in efficient wayLarge and small spaces between building blocks are great places for students to learn and conduct activities. Because of the diversity of places and routes, students will take their own subjective initiative to make rational use of various spaces. A fun and beautiful environment allows students to enjoy learning rather than exclusion. It inspired me to conduct with my "multi- activity "concept base on the interesting atomsphere.

After re-examining the entire base, I decided to rethink the entire design, of course, while retaining the concept of an amusement park and some elements that I want to continue to develop. First, I identified the entrance to the base and found that the entrance to the lawn and the secondary entrance of the old building were in a straight line. By connecting the two, a new designed avenue was formed, and the main road and the old building group were connected in series. Can become the main traffic stream of the new building group. In the last design, I wanted to keep the cylinder. So I placed the cylinder on this main streamline, releasing the first layer of the cylinder, making it the largest node on the main axis and becoming the main activity space for the entire school. At this time, I think of the Stockholm Public Library, I hope to apply such a circular space to my design. I think it fits the atmosphere of the main space of the school. For the entrance, I think of the famous gallery of Korea Ewha Women's University. Of course, the volume should not reach that level, but it has made a large stepped entrance space, forming a strong sense of entrance ceremony.

With regard to the functional arrangement, under the guidance of the teacher's brainstorming class, I tried a collage of various functions. Based on my main axis thinking and deliberation, I hope to put the multi-functional comprehensive learning area in my main cylinder, while the sports function and employee function are distributed on both sides of the main axis. The integrated learning area forms an area where people's behaviors are intertwined.

ROOF PLAYGROUND OF PARKING LOT JAJA Architects ďźŒCopenhagen

REFLECTION

The project was refered the parking structure, and makes facades and roof accessible and inviting to the public. As an urban space, the new parking structure tells a story of an active city, Inspired by the staircases on the exterior of the iconic Centre Pompidou in Paris, a flight of stairs rises up from the ground floor across the long sections on the north and south side of the car park up to the roof. The red handrail of the stairs continues on the roof and is integrated in the various play structures. It thereby serves as a key element in the swings, benches and monkey bars. It finally leads visitors to the absolute highlight of the rooftop playground According to client requirement, the reserved lawn should be kept as much as we can. After I review this project, I consider placing a large number of square spaces on the roof, retaining original lawn, enriching the level of space and increasing the activity venue for students. I try to do the similar thing with JAJA architects, to make people enjoy the experience of playing in an arena through an unusual path.

DIGITAL DRAWING ATTEMPT

The height of the stadium is considered.

这个体育馆的高度需要考虑,有多高?因为要 考虑到自然因素,如果太高,会不会挡住一些 地方的采光之类的,老师建议可以有一部分 underground

REFLECTION

1.It is best to be closed and not open-air. Consider the rainy weather in Melbourne. The main learning area can be placed in cylindrical area . 2. The shape of the rectangular area is a bit ordinary. Consider the atmosphere according to the function. (It can be staff office area) 3. Admin or reception area should be considered , it could arrange near the office area.

这 块 儿 是 reception or general admain?

Consider the rainy weather in Melbourne. 这块儿老师说最好做成封闭式而不是露天的,因 为墨尔本常下雨而中心地带正好又是个常用的 publuc space,考虑天气因素。另外老师说可以把 主要学习地方及教室拍在这里

Admin or reception? The shape 这块儿从形状及排列老师感觉稍稍有 is a bit ordinary. 点 普 通, 要 考 虑 到 这 里 要 产 生 什 么 样 的 atomsphere (interesting / multpie experience )。这块儿可作为 staff room ,office room/changing room

4. The height of the stadium should be considered. Will it be too high to block the lighting of other buildings? Can be considered for underground The draft skectch is qute good through tutor nad classmate's feedback. However, the above question should be considered. Also even the geometry arranging is quite nice, but is looks not "playful" or "dynamic". I will develop futher through the case study.

Can consider more organic forms? According to the previous reflection, the geometry arranges in a nice way but looks not interesting enough. So I try to improve and add an interesting element into the interior space. Consider about organic form, both MusĂŠoParc AlĂŠsia and Plants Segunda using the curvy streamline to show the dynamic atmosphere for the interior space on the plan, enclosed by regular geometry to achieve theirs behind a concept. These study could be the inspiration for me to look at how can I change the atmosphere through the form on the plan view to make some interesting thing .

groundfloor plan

First, I make the entrance richer. Then the stadium was rotated 45 degrees.his will cover the main axis in the middle. So I created a route along the stadium. Then broke the body of the office area in the south. There will be a small yard recessed in the middle. Therefore, people's streamlines become the hall of reception below. Then walk along the line of the gallery, and the side is the scene of the stadium. To the north is the sunken plaza, where underground functional blocks extend out to illuminate. There are underground corridors connected. There is an elevator and stairwell on the top for people with disabilities. The cylinder block is flat and the individual blocks are rounded. The dividing wall in the block can be more organic, creating more vivid feelings.

DIGITAL DRAWING ATTEMPT II

REFLECTION The individual block of gym is better to move to the side of the stadium, so that the place occupied before can become a green space and outdoor sports. Streamlines are also convenient.

The stair here is too complicated, and the stadium's big ladder is still two-way, it is better to change it to one side. And now the feeling is relatively narrow, and wasting space, not friendly for disabled people.

The student common room can exchange locations with the locker room. Because the student common room is now facing south, there is no sunshine, it is better to change to the north, and you can see the outdoor sport area.

There is no need for a parking area here, just green land. There is an underground car park nearby, and the students are mainly on public transportation.

WEEK 8 &9 FACADE & STUCTURE

DOME OF VISIONS 3.0

Atelier Kristoffer Tejlgaard , Aarhus, Denmark

REFLECTION

Dome of Visions 3.0 is the third dome in a series of experiments. DoV is an experiment that aims to create knowledge about how it affects our architecture and our well-being to build inside a greenhouse and work with a passive and solar heated space as a building envelope that generates a third climate, as the majority of the area we use. I am quite interested in the structure system of the envelope. The construction team use the CNC cutting to make sustainable timber material and connecting steel (using for reinforcement)into the modular way. Then connect them by using the professional machine and reinforce it. The dome 3.0 is 24 meters in diameter, and the dome I need to make learning area's roof is 20 meters in diameter, which is very useful. The wooden frame and glass add up to be light and beautiful. Also, the round beam structure below will be the construction solution for how could the dome sit on the cylindrical area.

THE GYMNASIUM OF NEW CAMPUS OF TIANJIN UNIVERSITY Atelier Li Xinggang , China

REFLECTION

The roof and the exterior walls of the sports space use a series of reinforced concrete structure of ruled curve surfaces, barrel arches and conical surfaces which provide long span space and high side window daylighting. The tectonic texture of the wooden mold concrete is exposed inside, and the architectural outline of silence and diversity is formed outside, achieving the perfect unity of the building's structure, space, and form. Because stadium is occupied most area of the site , so I want to do someting special through the exporation of the structure system of the stadium. It also can enrich the view not only plan , but also section. Instead of choosing an ordinary truss structure, the stadium uses separate arch vouchers and concrete structures to enrich the faรงade and interior space.

IVANHOE GRAMMAR SENIOR YEARS & SCIENCE CENTRE Mcbride Charles Ryan, Melbourne, Australia

encapsulates the contemporary pedagogical approaches for a well-rounded education

REFLECTION The outer cladding of the Ivanhoe Grammar school is Colorbond Longline, the inner cladding Vitrapanel(metal cladding) . The exterior shading fins are glue laminated Queensland spotted gum. Windows are aluminium, double glazed & thermally broken. High quality acoustic glazed doors are used between learning spaces. The architect thinks that the building is like an egg, and it looks more rigorous outside, but the interior faรงade is made of colorful metal plates. I think the contrast between outer and inner cladding can create kind of dynamic ,expression and multiple scene for people to make them enjoy the educational atomsphere, which the contemporary pedagogical approaches for a well-rounded education.

EMILY CARR DESIGN AND ART SCHOOL Cherrnoff Thompson Architects, Canada

REFLECTION

The new Emily Carr University of Art & Design is a purpose-built, 290,000-sq-ft facility for learning and production in the arts. The building facade combines glass and white metal panels to convey the possibilities of a blank canvas writ large. A colour palette drawn from the works of the namesake British Columbia artist Emily Carr punctuates the cladding. The character and materiality of detailing is willfully designed to be robust and resilient to support sustained creative production. After the study, I consider applying this facade in the remaining squares, which is the staff office's block. The metal plate will feel the same as the inside of the ring. But the window can add some color and echo inside the ring to create a lively atmosphere, responding back to my multi experience & concept. Moreover, it can encourage student being raw and unpretentious to encourage innovation and experimentation.

MODEL SCRUTINY

REFLECTION

When I finish the case study about facade & structure system, I bring my case into tutorial and discussion with my tutor. Both of them give postive feedback on that, however , they suggest me to take the test which can help me to judge the feasibility of that. So I build a rough digitial model to test facade& structure stystem in different way. The final version of the model looks satisfactory, the sturcture and facade thing is responding with each other to respond my concept. Because there is no color in there , it looks monotonousc even it can rich mutiple experience. So, I need to consider how I going to render them? Color theory and interior atomsphere is also the improtant element for me to consider in next step

WEEK 10 INTERIM PRESENTATION

REFLECTION

The interim presenation sound great with improved interesting concerpt and nicely render. The grapgic lanage on panel is quite good through tutor and classmate's feedback. However, there are several things that I need to consider in my final design. 1.The width of the classroom design is too narrow, hope to be wider, I need to confirm the design requirements of the brief. 2. Need to strengthen the connection between the project and the concept, seek more things that reflect the feeling of the amusement park. I hope that I can get more inspiration and theoretical basis from the book. 3.This piece of geometry is a good design, but from the plan, this square with the study area's circle and the stadium is a bit more complicated. If you can, simplify it while keeping the geometry arrangement interesting. 4. I need consider the materiality in the futher design , even in render.

WEEK 11,12&13 DETAILING AND REFINEMENT

LEGO HOUSE BIG, Denmark

“LEGO house is a literal manifestation of the infinite possibilities of the LEGO brick. Through systematic creativity children of all ages are empowered with the tools to create their own worlds and to inhabit them through play. At its finest – that is what architecture – and LEGO play – is all about: enabling people to imagine new worlds that are more exciting and expressive than the status quo – and to provide them with the skills to make them reality. This is what children do every day with LEGO bricks – and this is what we have done today at LEGO House with actual bricks, taking Billund a step closer towards becoming the Capital for Children.” Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, BIG.

MODIFICATION REFLECTION

For the modification of the staff area. I can take three cubes that are homogeneous, which reduces complexity and echoes the squares of the stadium. And insert the arc wall in the square to enrich the indoor space, so as to achieve the entire building group, the circle has a square, and the square has a circle. Also, I try several things about the roof structure which stays on the cylindrical area and test them in the digital model. For the test, I also use very to do the simple render and view from ground floor to the roof to judge which dome could be the best version could give people moderate feeling.

REVISION FEEDBACK & REFLECTION The north side can be designed to move the wall so that more light can be entered.

Choosing a roof is determined by the angle of view of the person who is standing on the first floor and the feeling of light, and the overall beauty.

Consider the same table and chair arrangement in the cafe

This slope can be cancelled. It's a bit damaging to the whole geometry and should not be used often. Consider the sight of the entrance

Parking area can be deleted

This area can be considered for designing a small garden for the staff.

MOVEABLE BOOKSHELF ?

The removable wall may be replaced with a movable bookcase, which will increase the fun and experience of students' learning life. The space behind the movable bookshelf can be used as a public learning space to prevent the classroom from being affected.

WEEK 14 FINAL PRESENTATION

LEARNING AREA DESIGN

FINAL REFLECTION From the final presentation, I got more positive feedback than the interim presentation. First, the reference from the past case study and the playing environment theory is the important evidence to support my design concept/argument, and enrich them into the various way. Secondly, the geometry arranging/playing is quite successful and interesting. Actually, it's my first time to play geometry for architecture, the previous project that I designed is quite a simple form or the parametric things. Through the design process of the geometry playing, I did lots of the study of precedents (Eg. Faculty of the architecture of the University of Porto) and try many different arranging ways through the sketch model. This process is quite complex, similar as grasshopper test with parametric design. However, when I finish once test, I feel like it can fresh my mind and put things in the real, then I can try other things to make the comparison between each other. Then I can give the reason and reflection " Why I choosing that" " Why I create that". After I answered the question by myself, I can push myself more hard into an upper level. So, the test way is really efficient and reflective way through architecture design. T h i r d l y, c o m p a r e d t o t h e l a s t t i m e r e n d e r, t h e materiality could show on the image. The graphics skill on the panel is quite nice and can clearly show what I am done through the whole semester. Also, there still exist some issues that I need to consider in the future. The corridor on my design is still not work in an efficient way. I mention the concept of " defining boundary " and " view of the outdoor activity" through the presentation. However, I need to consider people feeling if the corridor was using for people views, Such as I can put some sitting area in there. Moreover, the corridor looks people can walk

end of the corridor is noting. To solve this problem, I think I need to go back to my site analysis and review for how could I improve my corridor if I still want to use it to define the site boundary. Moreover, I forget to consider the outdoor sports court. Because of the time limit, I got more focus on concept development and graphic skill. If I could have more time, I think I will put the outdoor court above the cylindrical learning area, there is still open space that I left, so I think it will not affect my whole design things. Finally, I won't talk about the dome in my reflection, through the review and feedback from the guest tutor, she thinks the dome is still not going to work well on the design, even I test and change it. I argue that the dome roof is going to match my theatre architecture concept. "I tried to turn the ground into an indoor space by giving the building a large roof. It is a theater with a large roof. They provide gathering places, viewpoints, places to play, places for taking souvenir photographs, as well as being minitheaters in themselves.-Sendu", However, the guest tutor also gives her argument which is the theatre architecture not only show on its roof but also shows through the other design way, I think her argument was also correct. So if I have more time, I should consider it and do more research on theatre architecture if I still want to use it to show my multi& amusement concept. Overall, I really enjoyed the study experience on studio fire, not only improve my design concept thinking but also push my graphic language into the new level, It's very good exercise and test before I go to the master study. I hope I can remember this experience forever and push myself in an extreme way. Finally, enormous thanks to my tutor Sarah and my classmates in stream III, you always give me useful feedback to make me move
