featuring TOMMY TIERNAN SIDNEY SAMSON TINCHY STRYDER PAINTBALLING and much more!
Hi guys! Hi Guys, Well it’s that time of year again and I hope you are all set for the great week we have in store for you. We have a number of great acts throughout the week which include one of Ireland’s best comedians, Tommy Tiernan. Also we have a number of new events never seen before in GMIT with paintballing on campus and I’m a student get me out of here. But most importantly, we must remember what Raise And Give week is all about and that is raising money for charity. This year we have gone with the concept ‘a charity a day’. With each charity being given a day to fundraise. The charities on board this year are: Serve, Habitat for Humanity, Alan Kerins Afican Projects, Cancer Care West and Jigsaw. I would ask that you do your best throughout the week to support these charities. I’d like to thank everyone for their help in making this week possible. Also I’d like to thank Colin, the part-time executives and the class reps for all the help they have given me all year. Please stay safe and be respectful of the local community and make sure that Raise and Give week is remembered for all the right reasons. Finally I would like to say it has been an honor being your president for the last 2 years, and as I won’t be here next year, I hope you do me a favour and make sure I go out in style!!! Best of luck to you all... Paddy GMIT SU President 091 74 2005 087 626 5634 supresident@gmit.ie

Hey everyone! I hope you are keeping well and a Happy RAG Week to you all!! Well then, I’m sure some of you have been waiting for this week since the minute you set foot inside the place in September, saving all those hard earned €s in advance of this week’s fun and frolics, wondering what bands/acts were going to be played, stocking up on the bottles, cans, naggins or whatever ye can get your hands on. So ladies and gents, the wait is over, it’s finally here!!! Yes it’s finally arrived!!!! RAG week is well and truly upon us for another year!!! :) Yay!!!!!:) I have to say guys, RAG week is one of the most enjoyable weeks of the college year and hopefully this will be the first of many more RAG Weeks for all you Freshers that are new to GMIT. Not forgetting the old stalwarts and existing students, I hope that RAG Week 2010 will be the best ever one for ye too! I have to say, since I started as VP, RAG week has nearly been one of the most debated things in college every week, so hopefully this year’s line-up will have something for everybody in terms music, comedy, games, paintballing and lots, lots more!!!) We have some fantastic acts for you during the week and I hope that you are looking forward to them as much as I am. Just to let everyone know, what we have decided to do for you this year with the wristband idea is to offer everyone as much as we can for as little as we can! That means when you buy your wristband, it immediately gets you into all four of our main events for just €50!!! Yes that’s all, just €50!!!! That’s Sidney Samson on Monday night, Paintballing on Tuesday, our big headline act Tinchy Stryder will bang out the tunes on Wednesday night, and then to cap the week off, Tommy Tiernan will laugh the pants off ya on Thursday night in the Radisson!..Now that has to be the deal of the century what???!!!!!:) But guys the most important part of RAG Week is your welfare, and as welfare officer in the Union, I have to urge you all to be extra careful during the week so please drink sensibly and mind yourself on nights out. Oh and if you are having a house party try and keep the noise down as you don’t want your neighbours lecturing you!! So please try and heed to the Sshhh! Campaign if having a house party cos our college management will have Me and Paddy’s balls if ye don’t! Also the Don’t Walk Home Alone campaign is there for you too, and will be in full swing during RAG Week if indeed you find yourself with no money at the end of the night after a full day on the piss!! BIG O TAXIS will bring you home safe and sound in exchange for your student card. So please, please use this for your safety and well being!!! See page 9 for more details on this... This year especially a big focus has been put on charities, helping those in need and fundraising, so if you see our charities out collecting money please, please support them. Even just €1 or €2 it can go a long way in helping people. Our main charities for the Week are Serve, Jigsaw, Habitat, Alan Kerins Africa Projects and Cancer Care West, so if you do manage to see any of them throughout the week, please support them!!! Finally I just want to thank everyone who has helped us out with the organising and planning of RAG Week 2010. It has been a big effort. (So Thanks guys!! Ye all know who ye are!!) Have a great week!! All the best Colin SU Vice President &Welfare Officer 091-742316 086-3473284 suvpresident@gmit.ie
HABITAT
Our RAG Week Charities
Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit, nondenominational Christian housing organisation. Habitat welcomes all people—regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or any other difference—to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built over 350,000 houses, providing shelter for more than 1.75 million people in over 90 countries around the world. A new Habitat house is completed somewhere in the world every 21 minutes.
CANCER CARE WEST
Cancer Care West was established as The Leukaemia Trust in 1993 by Professor Ernest Egan, the first Consultant Haematologist at University College Hospital Galway. At that time the organisation’s objective was to establish a charitable base for the development of Haematology and Medical Oncology services. The charity’s title - the Leukaemia Trust - was taken from the main focus of disease that support was sought for, but with a broader brief than Leukaemia as its goal. In the years that followed, the charity raised funds to support Haematology and Medical Oncology services at University College Hospital Galway through a programme of patient support and new therapy development, research and education in Cancer and Leukaemia care. It became apparent at an early stage that the name Leukaemia Trust was too restrictive within the overall brief adopted. At a national level in recent years, the need to develop regional cancer centres was recognised. Through the lobbying of the Leukaemia Trust and the work of many people, Galway has since become such a regional centre. It is in this context, and with our concerns that the title Leukaemia Trust conveyed too narrow a profile of interest for the Charity, that the Charity registered it’s operating name Cancer Care West.
JIGSAW GALWAY
Jigsaw is a free and confidential (private) support service for young people, aged 15 - 25, in Galway City and County. Jigsaw support is about listening to you, to find out where you’re at, and figure out where you want to be. When something gets you down, stressed or bothered, one of our support workers in Jigsaw can provide information, non-judgemental listening and supportive guidance, so that you can clear your head, figure things out and take actions that you are comfortable taking. We understand that whatever it is that’s troubling you, it may affect different parts of your life, so we can provide other supports if you want them, such as meeting with our nurse, or an appointment with our doctor or substance-misuse counsellor.
ALAN KERINS AFRICAN PROJECTS
In January 2005, Alan Kerins travelled to the town of Mongu in western Zambia with nothing more in mind than a short three month stint as a voluntary physiotherapist in a local centre for physically disabled children. What he saw triggered a fundraising campaign that has since helped change lives and futures forever. Alan initially travelled out to spend three months at the Cheshire Home for Physically Disabled Children run by the Presentation Sisters in Mongu, but having seen the depth of poverty and deprivation that engulfed the entire region, felt compelled to help. The rains in winter 2004 had been the poorest Zambia had experienced in 77 years. Sitting at the centre of Western Province, an area about three times the size of Ireland perched out on the tip of the Kalahari Desert, drought threatened to ravage the area around Mongu. Water was scarce, food was even harder to find. When Kerins came home with his story it found an audience willing to listen, and help. Since 2006, well over a million Euro has been raised on behalf of the Alan Kerins African Projects, the monies invested into a variety of essential projects and services. A food programme for the sick and elderly helped ease the threat of famine. At the drought’s height, the food deliveries reached 700 starving families.
SERVE
SERVE is a development and volunteering organisation committed to working with the poorest people in the world. SERVE contributes a budget of over €1 million each year, and assigns up to 90 volunteers per year, supporting programmes that help transform the lives of some of the poorest communities in the world. In a world bound by poverty SERVE is committed to justice, equality and sustainable development. The first SERVE volunteer initiative involved twelve young Irish adults working with a range of development partners in the Philippine islands for ten weeks in 2003. This overseas experience prompted a vision that has seen SERVE evolve into a development and volunteering organisation working with partners in Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and the Philippines.

SIDNEY SAMSON As a seven year old boy, Sidney started playing the guitar. From there on he knew that he wanted to make music for the rest of his life. After seeing a couple of DMC mix championships, his interests were going towards dj-ing. He started dj-ing in 1995 at the age of 14. During that time he mainly played RnB and HipHop tunes at local clubs. He switched his style completely into housemusic in 1999 and became the resident DJ of the ‘Exxellent’ nights at one of Holland’s biggest clubs The Matrixx in 2003. His producing skills really took off in that period. His first real club banger was called ‘Sidney Samson-It’s all funked up!’ (Spinnin’ Records 2003), which had a high rotation by DJ’s like ErickE and Jean. After this release, Sidney knew that he couldn’t stop here and locked himself up in his studio. ‘Nobody Move’, ’Rock This’, ‘Girls’, ‘Aeroplane’ and ‘Viruz’ were some resulting floor fillers, to name but a few. In 2007, after a few successful collaborations with Gregor Salto, they decided to start a new record label named Samsobeats. On this label, new tracks are released from the hottest new DJ’s and producers who showed their talents to the world. Samsobeats wants to set a new feeling instead of a particular sound. That’s why you can expect very various tracks, from electro to latin. Every release must have the potential to grow into a floor filler. With the Skitzofrenix he was responsible for the big summer hit ‘You don’t love me’. This tune is still ripping up the gmit students’ union presents dance floors and was of course released on Samsobeats!

TINCHY STRYDER Meet Tinchy Stryder, the “Star in the Hood” and one of 2008’s most exciting new artists. Having just turned 21 he already has a MOBO nomination, Sidewinder Award, has toured with Kano and Bedouin Soundclash, performed across Europe and released an independent debut to critical acclaim – all with only the backing of his two teenage managers and himself. And now he’s been swooped up by Island Records just 3 weeks before the release of the single from the new album… Tinchy, real name Kwasi Danquah, was born in Ghana in 1986 and moved to East London at a young age. He was brought up and still lives in one of the capital’s most dangerous boroughs – Tower Hamlets; yet despite his tough upbringing he has a distinctly positive outlook on life and is determined to provide a positive role model for kids across the country. Having started making music, along with his group ‘Ruff Sqwad’, aged just 13 Tinchy has seen through the years the negative press that the music he loves has received and is on a mission to change this. “It’s important to me to show that black males aren’t all about looking threatening and robbing your granny” Tinchy quips. “It’s not always easy growing up in an inner city area, wherever it is, but in my music I want to show people that you can take that experience and turn it into something positive.” “I guess my writing is pretty much from my life experience right now” says Tinchy. “That’s why I’ve focused a lot on the whole star in the hood thing – cos I’m still here – where I always have been, but now people know me, so I can’t always go the same places I used to be able to. I’m not in a rush to get out cos I know my area and I love it, but hopefully one day through my music I can.” Recent sessions with Fraser T Smith (Craig David, Kano) have proved fruitful, with some exciting results. According to the man himself, “Working with Fraser has been sick, a different experience for me to what I’m used to, I think he’s definitely brought out the best in me. I’ve always had influences beyond the obvious and Fraser can bring any style through. I can’t wait for people to hear what we’ve made. I really am excited to get this stuff out there.” With musical influences ranging from his mentors, Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, through to less expected artists such as Phil Collins and Oasis, Tinchy’s sound is ever expanding. “I recently worked with a band for the first time – The Underground Heroes,” he explains. “Again, it was something new and exciting for me. We definitely clicked and hopefully we can do some more stuff in future – live and studio based.” For now though Tinchy is concentrating on touring and wrapping up the plan for his album re-launch. After ‘Star in the Hood’ was released to massive underground success in 2007 he has decided that he’s not done with it just yet. “I think it’s good enough to reach to a much wider audience” says Stryder “it was only put out there by me, Archie and Jack; I know with more backing and a couple of extra tracks that’s it’s gonna be big this year.” TINCHY STRYDER plays GMITSU RAG Week on Wednesday 24th at the Radisson Live Lounge

Humour An award should go to the Virgin Airlines desk attendant in Sydney making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. A crowded Virgin flight was cancelled after Virgin’s 767s had been withdrawn from service. A single attendant was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, “I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS’” The attendant replied, “I’m sorry, sir. I’ll be happy to try to help you, but I’ve got to help these people first, and I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.’” The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?” Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address microphone...”May I have your attention please” she began, her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal. “We have a passenger here at Desk 14 who DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Desk 14. Thank you.” With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the Virgin attendant, gritted his teeth and said, “Fu*k You!” Without flinching, she smiled and said, “I’m sorry, sir, but you’ll have to get in line for that too.”
WHEN SUPERMAN GOES SUPERBAD! Superman was having a few drinks and was kinda bored so he just started flying around looking for something to do. He’s flying over Wonder Woman’s house and sees her bedroom window is open. He stops for a glimpse and sees her lying on her bed naked. She’s lying there and squirming around looking real hot. Superman was getting turned on looking at her so he decides what the hell, I can just fly in real quick, give her the ole’ in-out and be out of there before she even knows what hit her. After all he is Superman. So, in he goes, wham-bam and he’s out of there. Wonder Woman knew something happened and says, “What was that?!” The invisible man says, “I don’t know but my arse is killing me.”

Some helpful tips to ensure you have a good night out during RAG Week: • Plan how you’re going to get home before you leave. Make sure you’ve got numbers for taxis and keep aside enough money to get home safely. • Eat before you go out, or during the evening. • Ideally avoid getting involved in a round. Alternatively, limit rounds to 2 or 3 friends. If you find yourself in a round but feel that others are drinking faster than you - or over recommended limits - it’s OK to skip a drink. Also feel free to remove yourself from the round altogether. • Drink water regularly to stay refreshed and hydrated. • Use soft drink beverages to pace yourself. • Remember that too much drink will do nothing for your looks - you’re drop dead gorgeous until you drop down drunk. • And don’t succumb to the beer goggles effect - you might think you’ve met your dream date - until the effect wears off! • Don’t accept drinks from strangers and never leave your drink unattended... it’s all too easy for someone to spike your drink…with more alcohol, for example.
