SHAG Week Review Hey guys!! I hope you are all keeping well and recovering after your RAG week excursions!!!! :)

Contact Colin

So then! The spring is here at last!!! And finally we have some nice weather to enjoy after all the excitement that was RAG Week 2010!! Now I know some of you are entering exams this week and it probably all seems like doom and gloom……and your thinking… Well Rag week is over!! :( ...that means the year is over??! …You could be saying…I can’t go out? Or even I’m too busy!!...maybe you’re saying well there’s nothing on why would I go out??…..!!! :-( SU Vice President & Welfare Officer Tel: 091 742785 Email: suvpresident@gmit.ie

Well then don’t worry, because we have some brilliant entertainment yet to come this year for you all including the Las Vegas Casino night, the Mock Wedding (both performed by 3rd year event management), Paddys day party and not least forgetting the End of Year ball which is a huge hit every year!…So hey its not all doom and gloom now is it??? :) But anyways, I just wanted to write this piece basically to thank everyone who helped out with both SHAG Week and RAG Week as they were a huge success! I have to say as it was my first time organising two large events such as them it took a huge team effort so. Thanks everyone! Just to fill you in on SHAG Week…It was a great success and this year I have to say will go down hopefully as one of the best yet!. The main aim of the week was to provide information on positive sexual health and encourage people to use condoms while having safe sex…We handed out in excess of 1500 free condoms and over 800 SHAG packs so we hope the week was all wrapped up and helped promote safe sex to everyone!! :) Both Paddy and I went on i102-104Radio to promote the week also and we were delighted with the support we received for it…So thanks must go to Fergal and Peter for that! Finally I would just like wish everyone the best of luck in any assessments, exams, projects or thesis’s that you might have now in the run in to Easter and also to let you know that we are here in the union to help in any way we can so just call down to us in the SU office across from the two banks and we will do our best for you! That’s it really so take care... All the best! Colin Your Vice President/Welfare Officer 09/10

What it means to be a PAL Leader in GMIT

2. Explain an activity you designed and prepared for a PAL session that worked really well? Katie & Laura: We brought in random household objects to a PAL Session and asked students to create pieces of art using any combination of them. The objects included a fan, candles, game controls etc. The students then had to discuss the meaning of the piece of art they created. This was our favourite activity as it helped the students develop skills that are integral to their course and also gave them the confidence to speak out about their work. Trevor: The activity I use the most is a group work quiz, by dividing the class into small groups of 3 or 4 students. The various groups then pose questions from subjects they are studying in that particular week for the other groups to answer. This works really well and holds the interest of the students.

Interview with Katie Creaven & Laura Nugent, PAL Leaders in School of Humanities, Cluain Mhuire Campus in Galway and Trevor Quinn, a PAL Leader in Castlebar Campus. PAL was set up in GMIT in January 2009 to support the 1st year experience. It is on the 1st year timetable for one hour per week and it involves working with other students to get the most from their programme. PAL Leaders encourage active learning in an informal, friendly and fun environment. Leaders can offer advice and suggestions, help with how to study in college, how to tackle assessments and exams, guide discussions and help first years be successful. There are currently 30 GMIT PAL Leaders operating on 12 programmes across the institute. In this months Student Union newsletter, PAL Leaders, Katie, Laura and Trevor report on their role and encourage students to get involved.

06

1. What do you think is the most rewarding aspect of being a GMIT PAL Leader? Katie and Laura: The most rewarding aspect is the ability to be able to help the students with their queries and insecurities and pass on our knowledge and experiences to them. One recurring issue was that the students were unsure as to what discipline they were going to choose. So, in our own time, we brought the class around the Cluain Mhuire campus to discuss their options with each staff member involved in each of the disciplines. Trevor: The most rewarding aspect would be the confidence I have gained from facilitating PAL Sessions. I get a great buzz from working with the 1st year students and assisting them with their learning.

3. What do you think is the most challenging aspect of being a PAL Leader? Katie and Laura: We felt that the most challenging aspect was having the time to help each individual, as each student has their own specific area that they have problems with. Trevor: The most challenging aspect for me was gaining the trust of the 1st year students. Having achieved that has made it much easier to facilitate the PAL Sessions and the input from the students has been remarkable, showing great interest in PAL. ------------------------------------------------If you are entering 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of your programme in September 2010 and are interested in becoming a PAL Leader, email pal@gmit.ie. JUST FOR LAUGHS Why you should never flirt at parties! A couple were invited to a swanky family’s masked, fancy dress Halloween party. The wife got a terrible headache! She told her husband to go to the party alone. He, being a devoted husband, protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed and there was no need for his good time to be spoiled by not going. So he took his costume and away he went.

”You must have looked really silly wearing that costume playing poker all night!” she said with ashamed sarcasm. To which the husband replied, “Actually, I gave my costume to your Dad, apparently he had the time of his life.

WRITE TO US!

If you have a question, a joke or indeed anything to say, pop us an email to brendan.kenny@gmit.ie

The wife, after sleeping soundly for about an hour, woke without pain and as it was still early, decided to go to the party. As her husband didn’t know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. So she joined the party and soon spotted her husband in his costume, cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice “chick” he could and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there.

His wife went up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his new partner high and dry and devoted his time to her. She let him go as far as he wished, naturally, since he was her husband. After more drinks he finally whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed. So off they went to one of the cars and had passionate intercourse in the backseat. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away and went home; put the costume away and sat up reading when he came in. She asked what kind of time he had. “Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you’re not there.” Then she asked, “Did you dance much?” He replied, “I’ll tell you, I never even danced once. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the spare room and played poker all evening.”

JUST FOR LAUGHS After it was marked and the child brought it home, she returned to school the next day with the following note: Dear Ms. Davis, I want to be very clear on my child’s illustration. It is NOT of me on a dance pole on a stage in a strip joint. I work at Home Depot and had commented to my daughter how much money we made in the recent snowstorm. This picture is of me selling a shovel. Mrs. Harrington

First Mobile Library In The Republic Of Ireland Dermot McCabe (2nd Year Heritage Studies) As reported in October 1956

Tuesday 23rd October 1956 was the inauguration of the First Mobile Library Service of Monaghan County Library in Scotstown Tydavnet, Ballinode and Smithboro areas. This is the first mobile unit in Eire. The idea behind the mobile library unit is that readers in the rural areas of Co Monaghan; where otherwise suitable library buildings are unavailable, it will have full access to the full range of the County Library Service. The mobile library will visit such areas; once a fortnight will attend at pre arranged stop points; which have been adequately signposted for periods varying from 1½ to 2 hours per session. T he mobile library will about 1000 volumes of fiction non fiction and children books. Furthermore, readers will be invited to submit requests of non fictional nature, and every effort will be made to supply their wants. Adult readers will pay 1 shilling registration fee per annum; while the service is free for juniors. On Tuesday next the mobile library unit will visit Scotstown, Tydavnet Ballinode Smithboro a return visit will be made on every alternate Tuesday; when books may be exchanged the Mobile Service will work to a rigid time schedule. On the following Tuesday October 30th the mobile unit will visit Drum Rockcorry, Stranoden and Greenans Cross. The provision of this mobile service marks an important milestone not only in the history of development of f Monaghan County Library Service, but also in the Library Service in general throughout the Republic. The Monaghan mobile unit will operate on a trial bases until 31st March next, and if by that time it has been proven a successful venture a more ambitious Unit will be put on the road serving a wider range of coverage throughout the county. Thus full potential service of the County Library will be made available equally to all. On this score it is hoped that readers will take full advantage of this unique and pioneer project; which no doubt has set national headlines. A few other counties in the Republic have already claimed to be pioneers in a similar project, such claims, however are based on the fact that display and delivery vans which serve only established branches and centres in towns and villages have been in operation. Monaghan County Library as far as back as 1951, put a delivery van of such nature on the road; this service still continues. Accordingly the Monaghan Mobile Unit is adequately qualified to claim pioneership; in this project. The picture above shows this modest beginning they have one Unit doing the work of several established branches; and giving to the rural population of the county full access, to the important and educational scope of the County Library facilities which heretofore their more fortunate brethren in the towns and villages enjoyed. The County Librarian and his staff are to be congratulated for being so far sighted in launching this worthwhile venture. The County Librarian was Martin McCabe he was the pioneer of this project and First Mobile Library Driver as well. 2006 was the 50th anniversary of the First Mobile Library Service.
