Over 1000 journalists and media workers have been killed since 1996. Day after day, journalists investigate and file reports on conflicts, abuse of power, human rights, violation and corruption issues they know they could be sued or killed for. Many pay the ultimate price. In memory of that brave journalists who made their last journey to a Country torn by war and civil unrest and took a chance to let the truth to be told, who took their last photograph or movie footage or sound recording, who told their last story, organised the Exhibition JOURNALISTS AT RISK, The Exhibition presents information about journalists’ extreme situation all around the World trough TALKING POSTERS designed and published by journalist from Azerbaijan Sabina Salim. The main goal of Talking Posters is to call for a free, independent and pluralistic media. The Exhibition open from 9am to 5pm in Galway City Museum.

GMITSU ELECTION 2010
CANNY & O’CONNOR IN Thursday 25th of March saw voting for the 2010 GMIT Students’ Union elections take place at Union Square on the Dublin road campus. In the final push for votes, campaign teams ensured a carnival atmosphere was in place thanks to a popcorn machine, a bag piper, buskers, DJ Fergal DArcy of iRadio, hot chocolate, hot dogs, burgers, ice-cream, a plethora of sweets and even an appearance from the Stig! Once the polls closed at 4pm, participants met up to swap shirts in a show of comradery and respect for what was a tough but fair campaign. Returning Officer Dennis Murphy confirmed that over 2200 votes had been cast in the President’s election, making it the highest turnout in the Institute’s history. There was also a record vote for the Vice-President & Welfare Officer position, with more than 1900 votes cast. The count took over four hours on Thursday night, which saw a vitality and enthusiasm not witnessed before at an Students’ Union election. At approximately 10:30pm, it was declared that Colin Canny (a graduate of Science in Information Technology for Business) had won the position of President, whilst Joe O’Connor (currently finishing his Masters of Strategy & Business Innovation) will be taking up the Vice President & Welfare Officer role vacated by Colin. Meanwhile, the Castlebar campus officially welcomed back President Alan Judge for a second term, whilst James Mitchell, a 3rd year student of Architectural Technology was voted in as the new Vice President & Welfare Officer. Congratulations to all teams for the supreme effort put in to the campaign and congratulations to the new officers. For further details on the results, go to www.gmitsu.ie.

GMIT Students Nominated for Smedia 2010 Award GMIT computing students have been short listed for two prestigious awards in the National Student Media Award Finals “Smedia 2010” run by Oxygen.ie, to take place on 21st April in Dublin. The nominations are for Web Designer of the Year sponsored by The Irish Times and Website of the year sponsored by Truvo.ie. Four fourth year students on the B.Sc (Hons) in Information Technology for Business have developed an innovative website which provides health and fitness information for the people of Galway: Michael Monaghan (Project Manager) from Belmullet, Co.Mayo, Patrick Regan from Circular Road, Galway, Elaine Dempsey from Oranmore, Galway, and Xin Yu from Nanchang, China, are up against student teams from NUI Galway, Trinity College and UCD. Their innovative website www. activegalway.com caters for all levels of fitness from amateur to athlete, with a special emphasis on demystifying gyms and physical activity for complete novices.
From Left to Right: Michael Monaghan (Project Manager), Xin Yu, John Farrell (Lecturer), Patrick Regan. Absent Elaine Dempsey.
The team enlisted the help and knowledge of well-known Galway Sports Therapist John Mellett and has a number of special features including its own map of Galway and popular walking and training areas. Visitors to the site can find how much ground they cover on an evening walk of the popular Salthill prom or other favourite walking spots in Galway and even how many calories burned en route. Other features include a BMI calculator, training videos, a health and life style forum and links to local sports clubs. The GMIT team of four social entrepreneurs understands that health & fitness has become an essential aspect of everyday life. The site which was designed by student Michael Monaghan has received many commendations and has just shortlisted in two categories - Web Designer of the Year and Website of the Year. Gabriel Hicks, Head of the Dept of Computing & Maths, GMIT, says “For the students, Smedia 2010 is the most prestigious competition in Ireland’s media events’ calendar. It brings together the very best of student projects from all over the country and acts as a showcase for their creativity and enterprise.” Team leader Michael Monaghan says they are delighted to have reached the finals of this prestigious competition which they have been prepared for by lecturer John Farrell. “John gave us every assistance in developing the site, getting us to take advantage of the latest internet technologies to further develop our skills base which lead to some of the exciting features on Active Galway.” John Farrell, lecturer in the Dept of Computing & Maths, says “It’s down to inspiration and a lot of perspiration on the students’ part. They worked extremely hard on this project and the department wishes them all the very best in the final.”

JUST FOR LAUGHS
Jane & Arlene Jane and Arlene are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain. Jane pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking. Arlene: What in the hell is that? Jane: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn’t get wet. Arlene: Where did you get it? Jane: You can get them at any chemist. The next day, Arlene hobbles herself into the local chemist and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The pharmacist, obviously embarrassed, looks at her kind of strangely (she is after all, over 80 years of age), but very delicately asks what brand of condom she prefers. ‘Doesn’t matter lovey, as long as it fits on a Camel!!’

Important health announcement for all students regarding
MUMPS
There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing).
IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU POSSIBLY HAVE SYMPTOMS, PLEASE CONTACT THE HEALTH UNIT NURSE This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES • If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE • If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue, however; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students, please contact your own GP. The HSE has provided this link for your attention: http://www.immunisation.ie/en/3rdLevelStudents/mumps Page 28
