Over 1000 GMIT students in National March Against Fees MORE THAN 1000 GMIT students joined a further 20,000 students in Dublin to protest against the potential increase in the Registration fee to €3,000 from €1,500 and a cut in the grant. GMIT SU President Colin Canny wishes to thank all the students who participated in the march and pointed out that, “It is another fantastic turnout from GMIT. Well done to everyone! The regional march in Galway takes place on Thursday 18th November and we hope anybody who could not support us on the march in Dublin can turn out on this day. It is crucially important that we make our voices heard to make the Government sit up and take notice before the budget in December”. Further details on the Galway protest will available in the coming week. Regarding the tensions that occurred later in the day, Gary Redmond, USI president, said: “The organisation is deeply disappointed at the destructive behaviour of a minority of people at the Dept of Finance, which occurred separately from the USI march. We do not condone destructive behaviour and believe that peaceful protest and open discussion and debate is the way forward for the students of Ireland.” GMIT Students’ Union moved quickly to get all GMIT students on buses and back to Galway and Castlebar earlier than originally planned with a view to avoiding the increased tensions. *See page 9 for more details

DUBLIN FEES PROTEST
GMIT Students’ Union joined over 20,000 students from around Ireland in Dublin city centre for a protest march, organised by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI). Students marched to ensure that Third Level education is protected in December’s Budget with representatives eager to stress the importance of capping the Student Services Charge, which has risen an incredible 689 percent, from €190 to €1500 since its inception. GMIT students were also marching to protect the student maintenance grant from cuts in the upcoming Budget. If this financial assistance is compromised, many local students will be forced to drop out of the college. USI is calling on the Government to introduce a graduate internship programme to prevent graduates from being forced to move abroad to seek employment. Ensuring that Higher Education is fair and accessible is imperative in repairing Ireland’s economic recovery plan, and, during the national protest march, GMIT Students’ Union will demonstrate this point with vigour. GMIT Students’ Union President, Colin Canny, said: “It’s time that the Government sat up and listened to the students of Ireland, who are the future of this country. GMIT Students’ Union is calling on the Government to protect education from any cuts in this year’s Budget. Many students of this college are wholly dependent on the student maintenance grant to see them through their Third Level education. Any cuts to this grant will only force many students, who are heavily reliant upon the assistance in the current recession, to drop out of college.” Gary Redmond, USI President, said: ““The savaging of Higher & Further Education would a devastating blow that puts the future of colleges and universities at risk and will have severe repercussions for not only the future prospects of students and learners but the economy as a whole. The Government continues to tell us that the deficit must be reduced to avoid passing a poisoned legacy to the next generation, but now they are proposing funding for third level education whilst transferring the debt onto students and the next generation.” Page 09

But, you know, they sound pretty good, especially considering that the lead vocalist has just gouged out his eyes, and the chief backup singer is dead.” New York Times. “…approaches the sublime… the songs are first-rate ear candy” Variety “…theatre so good you’ll gouge your eyes out” FWD Calgary “…Sophocles meets the Royle Family” Glasgow Herald “Sex, music and muesli” Rheinische Post “well worth the tinnitus and the hangover” Neue Ruhr Zeitung “Ned Dennehy’s Sphinx is worthy of an Aphex Twin video” Irish Independent Members of the Oedipus Loves You cast Page 10

WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, English scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the English, in the weeks that followed, a Welsh archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story was published in the Western Mail which read: “Welsh archaeologists, finding traces of 130year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech telecommunications network 30 years earlier than the English”.
NAME THE CELEBRITY
One week later, the Irish Times reported the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near his house in Tipperary, Pat O’ Riley, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely bugger all. Pat has therefore concluded that 130 years ago, Ireland had already gone wireless.”

Health Unit
MUMPS Whether living away from home for the first time or staying at home to attend college, first-time students will experience huge lifestyle changes in the coming months. The Nutrition and Health Foundation’s (NHF) 10 top tips for college students on eating healthily and getting regular exercise, will help you fuel your body and mind, giving you more energy and better concentration levels for your exciting college life ahead 1. Always have a breakfast - it is a valuable source of nutrients and people who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight. Having a breakfast will also give you the energy needed for your morning lectures. Examples are wholegrain/wholemeal variety of cereals and breads, a glass of fruit juice, include lots of fruit with your wholemeal/ wholegrain bread/cereal and use low fat milks for your cereal or cup of tea/coffee. 2. Try to eat 3 varied meals a day – fuelling your body with a variety of nutrients will give you plenty of energy to stay awake in class, study for exams and spend time with friends. Use the food pyramid for guidance and ideas. 3. Bring a packed lunch with you to college as this saves you money.
4. Keep treats as treats – it is all too easy to eat more treat foods than we should. This is because they are not as filling as more nutritious foods of similar energy content. 5. Size matters – bigger portions contain more calories, so by cutting the portion size, we can lose weight or maintain body weight. 6. Plan for days when you are too tired to cook – when cooking simply prepare more than you need and you can freeze the extra into individual portions for other days. That way you can have something tasty and precooked to hand, defrost thoroughly before reheating. 7. Bulk buying is cheaper in the end, so when shopping buy the larger packs where you can and break into individual portions and freeze where feasible. 8. Cook with/eat foods that are in season as they are cheaper and avail of in store promotions e.g. buy one get one free – stock up where you can. 9. Limit your alcohol consumption – if you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation, preferably with meals and have some alcohol free days. Heavy or binge drinking (five or more standard drinks on one occasion), especially on a regular basis, can lead to serious health problems. 10. Get active – exercise relieves stress and contributes to good mental health. Choose an exercise you enjoy and start by taking as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. You can build it up from there. Even walking to and from college helps! Click on http://www.drinkaware.ie/ for drinks calculator /// Reference: www.nhfireland.ie Page 18
MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.
