mas Jumper Day on Friday 10th December. A ‘great’ Christmas jumper would be classed as ‘cheesy’ or even ‘tacky’, and would be more akin to the look of a decorated Christmas tree as opposed to regular fashion styles. If you are looking for inspiration just ask yourself ‘what would Cliff Richard wear’ for a Christmas no. 1 video? Get the picture!? There will be prizes for the best, as in ‘worst’, jumpers on the day and only the most brutal will be in the running. So if it lights up, or plays a jingle, has a large santas head or just the most horrific big patterns you can find, this is the jumper that will be in fashion on Friday 10th December in The Latin Quarter.

And all that arrive in a dodgy jumper will receive a regarding sitting their exams in January (due to pre-booked flights etc) should contact their head of warm welcome (a hot whiskey on the house perdepartment immediately. haps???) Applies to over 18s only and in accordance with Drink Aware. Christmas Jumper Day is in aid of 4 charities, GOAL, Enable Ireland, ISPCC and the Alan Kerins Project. We’ve also been faced with a number of issues which affect students on a national scale, which has resulted in campaigns such as the graduate employment campaign, National and Regional protest marches, and the voter registration campaign. However, despite this, there’s been plenty of entertainment on offer, and I hope to see ye all down in the Library Bar this Thursday for the GMITSU Christmas Day Party- It promises to be a good one! So best of luck again if you’re sitting exams, and have a great Christmas!! We’ll see ye all in the New Year! College of Europe European Movement Ireland is pleased to announce that they are now accepting applications for the College of Europe Scholarship Programme 2011. Each year, the College of Europe Scholarship Programme facilitates a number of Irish students to study at Masters Level at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium and applications are currently being accepted for academic year 2011-2012. The closing date for applications for the 2011/2012 academic year is 15 January 2011. The programme is open to Irish students studying politics, law, economics and European studies. The College offers an excellent opportunity for Irish graduates interested in working in Europe to not only develop their knowledge and skills, but to experience education in a truly international environment. Courses on offer for the academic year 2011 to 2012 include an MA European Interdisciplinary Studies, MA EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies and MA European Law, amongst many others. Many of the College’s Irish alumni have gone to occupy high-level posts in European Institutions, and government departments, particularly Foreign Affairs. Past graduates of the College of Europe include current Head of the European External Action service and former Secretary-General of the European Commission David O’Sullivan and Economist David McWilliams. According to another College of Europe alumni, Fergal O’Regan, Head of Legal Unit in the Office of the European Ombudsman: “The College of Europe is the ideal launching pad for those that wish to pursue a career in the fields of European law and European public policy. It provides young Irish students with a unique opportunity to understand where Europe is and where it is going. It achieves this through its world class teaching staff and through the interaction amongst the students themselves. The College of Europe was a catalyst for my career. It opened windows to new ideas and doors to new opportunities”. Contact European Movement Ireland for biographies of College of Europe graduates. Detailed information on the application process and criteria is available on the European Movement Ireland website at www.europeanmovement.ie and from Advocacy Manager Billie Sparks at billie@ europeanmovement.ie.

MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR OWN GP The HSE has provided this website for your attention: www.immunisation.ie

USI Calls for Saturday Election The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has called for the looming General Election to be held at the weekend. Students must be able to cast their vote in the General Election, likely to take place in the second half of January 2011. If the election is held on a weekday, many citizens, who work or attend college outside of their constituency, will be unable to make it home on time to vote. USI is calling on the Government to ensure that all elections are held on a Saturday, as is common across Europe. USI President, Gary Redmond, said: “The Donegal South-West By-Election, which will be held this Thursday, has excluded many people from being able to vote. It is physically impossible for students and others to get home from work and college in good time to vote midweek. There is only a 48 hour window after an election is called for students to register for a postal vote – this is too short and requires an immediate change in legislation. Schools and other public buildings will also have to close on Thursday causing huge disruption to the general public. All elections should be held on Saturday as is common across the rest of the continent. The general election needs to be accessible for the students of Ireland, who are the future taxpayers of this country and will be burdened with paying for the bank bailout and the IMF loan. Over the last number of weeks the young people of Ireland have taken to the streets in unprecedented numbers, have engaged in dialogue with their elected representatives and have shown their determination to play an active role in the country’s future. The general election will be a defining moment in Ireland’s future and young people must be given the opportunity to take part in the most fundamental principle of our democratic process”
