| Volume III_September 2010

...to the first issue of the Students’ Union newsletter for the new year! I would like to welcome back everyone; I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to the new college year ahead! Also I want to take this opportunity to welcome all our new 1st year, international, and transfer students to GMIT. I can honestly say you have made a fantastic choice in coming to GMIT as it is one of the best places in the country to complete your studies, enjoy a busy social life and also make great friends. As GMITSU President, I have overall responsibility for the Union and how it is run. It is my job to ensure that your needs and problems are taken care of. I sit on a number of boards and committees, and I bring your concerns and problems to the attention of the college management, and ensure that your voice is heard. I would urge each and every one of you to make the most of your days in college by getting involved in clubs and societies as it is a great way to meet new friends, share common interests and indeed be able to represent your college on a national and in some cases an international front. Galway also boasts one of the best social scenes in the country with its extensive range of great restaurants, leisure facilities, cinemas and pubs/ clubs throughout the city. So make sure to stay tuned in to our website, notice boards and newsletters about upcoming entertainment, events and gigs throughout the year.

HOW THE FIGHT STARTED...Part One gmit students’ union presents

Jon Kenny @ Library Bar from 8pm followed by Live Band & DJ WEDNESDAY 22nd OCTOBER

My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to have sex?” “No,” she answered. I then said, “Is that your final answer?” She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying “Yes.” So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.” And that’s how the fight started...

MUMPS Whether living away from home for the first time or staying at home to attend college, first-time students will experience huge lifestyle changes in the coming months. The Nutrition and Health Foundation’s (NHF) 10 top tips for college students on eating healthily and getting regular exercise, will help you fuel your body and mind, giving you more energy and better concentration levels for your exciting college life ahead 1. Always have a breakfast - it is a valuable source of nutrients and people who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight. Having a breakfast will also give you the energy needed for your morning lectures. Examples are wholegrain/wholemeal variety of cereals and breads, a glass of fruit juice, include lots of fruit with your wholemeal/ wholegrain bread/cereal and use low fat milks for your cereal or cup of tea/coffee. 2. Try to eat 3 varied meals a day – fuelling your body with a variety of nutrients will give you plenty of energy to stay awake in class, study for exams and spend time with friends. Use the food pyramid for guidance and ideas. 3. Bring a packed lunch with you to college as this saves you money.

4. Keep treats as treats – it is all too easy to eat more treat foods than we should. This is because they are not as filling as more nutritious foods of similar energy content. 5. Size matters – bigger portions contain more calories, so by cutting the portion size, we can lose weight or maintain body weight. 6. Plan for days when you are too tired to cook – when cooking simply prepare more than you need and you can freeze the extra into individual portions for other days. That way you can have something tasty and precooked to hand, defrost thoroughly before reheating. 7. Bulk buying is cheaper in the end, so when shopping buy the larger packs where you can and break into individual portions and freeze where feasible. 8. Cook with/eat foods that are in season as they are cheaper and avail of in store promotions e.g. buy one get one free – stock up where you can. 9. Limit your alcohol consumption – if you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation, preferably with meals and have some alcohol free days. Heavy or binge drinking (five or more standard drinks on one occasion), especially on a regular basis, can lead to serious health problems. 10. Get active – exercise relieves stress and contributes to good mental health. Choose an exercise you enjoy and start by taking as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. You can build it up from there. Even walking to and from college helps! Click on http://www.drinkaware.ie/ for drinks calculator /// Reference: www.nhfireland.ie Page 26

MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.

An Garda Síochána Information Sheet

Stay Safe on Campus Your Personal Safety i i i i i i i i i

Avoid situations, where you are travelling alone at night time. When travelling on foot, use busy routes and well lit walkways. Don’t display obvious valuables – jewellery, handbags etc. unless completely necessary. Always take care when using ATM’s. When socialising, don’t leave an opened drink unattended, even for short periods. Don’t leave property unattended in libraries, lecture theatres, restaurants or changing rooms. If you think you are being followed, go to the nearest place where there are other people, and contact the Gardaí. If you are assaulted, help is available to you from the Gardaí 24 hours a day. Remember, no mobile phone credit is needed to make 999/112 emergency calls.

Security of Your Bicycle, Car or Motorcycle i i i i i i i i

When you purchase a bicycle, make sure you keep a receipt showing ID details. Secure your bicycle by using a good quality locking device. Leave your bicycle, car or motorcycle in an area which is supervised or where it can be seen. Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you must, then keep them out of sight in the boot. Don’t leave personal documents – driving licences, insurance certificates etc. in your car. Consider fitting a good quality alarm and/or immobiliser as well as a chain/padlock. Don’t pick up hitch-hikers. Secure parking for motorcycles can be difficult to find. ‘U’ shaped pieces of scaffolding pole embedded into concrete, and located in areas, which have good natural surveillance can be the answer to the motor cyclist’s theft problem.

The National Age Card

Security of Your Accommodation i i i i i i

Lock your front/back doors at all times. If leaving, check that all windows are locked. Take care when letting in callers – ask for identification if in doubt. Take special care of valuables, including laptops, IPods and mobile phones. Always lock outside doors. Use your door chain. If you receive strange or abusive phone calls, contact the Gardaí / Campus Security.

i i i i i

Remember that you can apply for "The National Age Card” once you have reached 18 years of age. This is a state of the art identification card which provides you with the means to prove your age when requested The card can be applied for through your local Garda station. Check it out on www.agecard.ie. Your local Garda station will also be able to give you details.
