THANK YOU A big thank you to everybody who made events of the past few weeks - including Freshers Week, the welfare campaigns and the Clubs & Socs Fair - such a success. GMIT WINS UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE GMIT Students’ Union representatives took part in a “University Challenge” quiz on the Ryan Tubridy 2FM show that was broadcasting from Eyre Square. See page 7 for pics. PARKING Please ensure that you have your Apcoa parking permits and that you park in the correct location. LIFE COACH Life Coach is a six part sit com for the web which was produced in Galway. It follows the adventures of the painfully shy John who employs the help of an almighty and overbearing Life Coach. It was written by and stars two stand up comedians, Giles Brody and Bob Hennigan. Our website is : http://flavors.me/lifecoach You can find us on youtube by searching for ‘Life Coach - Trailer’. And you can join us on facebook by searching for ‘lifecoachtips’.

LIFE COACH TIPS

Are you lost, desperately in need of direction? You are?! Great!! Every month the Life Coach will try to help you help yourself with his useful tips. This issue, he’ll try to guide you through the world of clubs and socs. 1- Societies are a great place to meet and socialise with like minded people. The less popular societies are also good places to lay low after a bank robbery. 2- Be wary of societies with vague titles e.g. Fun Soc. These societies are ALL murder cults. 3- No interests? Do find that most people are repulsed by you? Joining a political society is a great way for you to turn your natural repulsiveness to your advantage, while also allowing you the time to develop your no interests. 4- Do you suffer from shyness? Join a society on a whim and you end up meeting the love of your life. You could also end up meeting a weirdo called Steve who ends up stalking you for the remainder of your now considerably shorter life. Either way, you’re getting out there and socializing. 5- Get involved. Joining the Student Patrol isn’t just a good way of helping out your college, it also looks great on a CV when applying for a job as a bouncer. 6- Don’t feel that most sports are out of bounds to you just because you wear glass. They are, but you don’t have to feel that they are. 7- Golf is a noble sport steeped in history. Golfers on the other hand are all dull adulterers. 8- Slow and steady wins the race but only if the race is organised by lunatics and the reward is failure. 9- Find meditation boring? Spice it up with some competitive meditations. First one to achieve total relaxation wins. 10- Kung fu can be slow to learn, not to mention expensive. Cut the costs by making your own black belt which you can whip out anytime it looks like there’s going to be trouble. Page 09

DON’T WORRY IF YOU MISSED THE CLUBS & SOCS FAIR A full list of all Clubs & Socs will be appearing at www.gmitsu.ie shortly. This list will include contact details and Facebook group links. You can also call into the Students’ Union to sign up, or to start your own!

//DON’T WALK HOME ALONE GMIT’s official cab company for the year, CARA Cabs, will be running the Don’t Walk Home Alone Campaign. This campaign allows students, who do not have enough money to pay for their taxi fare, to leave their GMIT student card with CARA Cabs, and they will be brought home safely. They can then call back to the CARA Cabs office to collect their card and pay the fare they owe. CARA Cabs is the only cab company recommended by the Students’ Union, and they will be offering a flat fare of €7 to town from the GMIT area, and vice versa, upon one passenger producing their GMIT student card.

JUST FOR LAUGHS Micheal O Muircheartaigh To mark the great man’s recent retirement from commentating, we’ve compiled a small selection of some of his most memorable quotes.

DID YOU NOW!?

Did You Know, Donald Duck comics were banned from Finland because he doesn’t wear pants. Did You Know, The cigarette lighter was invented before the match. Did You Know, 40 percent of McDonald’s profits come from the sales of Happy Meals. “Colin Corkery on the 45 lets go with the right boot. It’s over the bar. This man shouldn’t be playing football. He’s made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man but he couldn’t kick points like Colin Corkery.” “1-5 to 0-8. Well from Lapland to the Antartic that’s level scores in any man’s language” “Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now... but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail...I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park !” “Pat Fox out to the forty and grabs the sliothar, I bought a dog from his father last week. Fox turns and sprints for goal, the dog ran a great race last Tuesday in Limerick. Fox to the 21 fires a shot, it goes to the left and wide...and the dog lost as well.” “Sean Óg o Hailpín...his father’s from Fermanagh, his mother’s from Fiji, neither a hurling stronghold. “ “Teddy McCarthy to John McCarthy, no relation, John McCarthy to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation. “ Page 14

Did You Know, TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. Did You Know, Butterflies taste with their feet. Did You Know, Coca-Cola was originally green. Did You know, If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. Did You Know, Every day more money is printed for Monopoly than the US Treasury. Did You Know, It is impossible to lick your elbow. Did You Know, Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.

JUST FOR LAUGHS ROAD SAFETY WEEK...the more serious side to safety on the road will be highlighted during GMITSU Road Safety Week from Monday 11th - Thursday 14th October

Efforts to combine Road Safety Week and Sexual Health Week proved to be disappointing...

HOW THE FIGHT STARTED...Part Two One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift... The next year, I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still haven’t used the gift I bought you last year” And that’s how the fight started...

MUMPS Whether living away from home for the first time or staying at home to attend college, first-time students will experience huge lifestyle changes in the coming months. The Nutrition and Health Foundation’s (NHF) 10 top tips for college students on eating healthily and getting regular exercise, will help you fuel your body and mind, giving you more energy and better concentration levels for your exciting college life ahead 1. Always have a breakfast - it is a valuable source of nutrients and people who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight. Having a breakfast will also give you the energy needed for your morning lectures. Examples are wholegrain/wholemeal variety of cereals and breads, a glass of fruit juice, include lots of fruit with your wholemeal/ wholegrain bread/cereal and use low fat milks for your cereal or cup of tea/coffee. 2. Try to eat 3 varied meals a day – fuelling your body with a variety of nutrients will give you plenty of energy to stay awake in class, study for exams and spend time with friends. Use the food pyramid for guidance and ideas. 3. Bring a packed lunch with you to college as this saves you money.

4. Keep treats as treats – it is all too easy to eat more treat foods than we should. This is because they are not as filling as more nutritious foods of similar energy content. 5. Size matters – bigger portions contain more calories, so by cutting the portion size, we can lose weight or maintain body weight. 6. Plan for days when you are too tired to cook – when cooking simply prepare more than you need and you can freeze the extra into individual portions for other days. That way you can have something tasty and precooked to hand, defrost thoroughly before reheating. 7. Bulk buying is cheaper in the end, so when shopping buy the larger packs where you can and break into individual portions and freeze where feasible. 8. Cook with/eat foods that are in season as they are cheaper and avail of in store promotions e.g. buy one get one free – stock up where you can. 9. Limit your alcohol consumption – if you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation, preferably with meals and have some alcohol free days. Heavy or binge drinking (five or more standard drinks on one occasion), especially on a regular basis, can lead to serious health problems. 10. Get active – exercise relieves stress and contributes to good mental health. Choose an exercise you enjoy and start by taking as little as 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day. You can build it up from there. Even walking to and from college helps! Click on http://www.drinkaware.ie/ for drinks calculator /// Reference: www.nhfireland.ie Page 20

MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.
