I’ve personally lived in this area since I was in elementary school.

I’ve seen the city grow, and spread, and all sorts of endless construction projects begin. None of them ever seem to end, but that’s a conversation for another day.

With as much local knowledge as I might have as someone that has been here for almost 4 decades, I must say that I absolutely loved reading this month’s cover story on some of the fine dining options in San Antonio. While I think we all would agree that San Antonio has some great restaurants, I bet that you had no idea how truly diverse and robust our dining scene is in San Antonio. The chefs and their restaurants featured in this issue have won every award imaginable, are well-respected world-wide, and have honed their skills at their craft to the highest levels.

While many of us have sampled from some of the more well known restaurants in the area, if you haven’t visited the places featured in this issue, you are truly missing out. MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

Dear Dominion Country Club Member, As we enter the Spring months in South Texas, few seasons are as enjoyable on the golf course as this. Temperatures are tolerable, the sun is ever-present, and our beautiful landscaping is in near perfect form.

With this in mind, our team has been working feverishly to prepare the course for this season, and they’ve made great progress! The bunker renovation is underway, with all of the greenside bunkers being targeted first. From there, we will move to the fairway bunkers to complete the full course’s bunker upgrade and renovation. Golf holes #1, #2, and #3 are now complete and we will be starting on #4 by the end of March. As #4 only has one bunker, we should be able to move on to #5 quickly, which is a much bigger project.

We continue to receive rave reviews on the renovation of the Clubhouse, so if you haven’t been in lately, I encourage you to take an evening and come enjoy a cocktail or a nice dinner and take in all the new improvements made and to meet some of the new staff members here to serve you.

Speaking of staff, I always must remember to congratulate the team here at The Dominion Country Club, who go above and beyond on a daily basis for our Members. Such pride in their work and the relationships they forge with the Members is such a joy to watch and I want to thank them for this, because without their hard work, The Dominion Country Club would not be the jewel that it is.

SUPPER CLUB Celebrating Chinese New Year

In 2019, the first day of the Chinese New Year was on Tuesday, February 5, initiating the Year of the Pig, and the Supper Club joined into the celebration! Supper Club members, Barbara Haley and Carol Hodges, planned for a great evening of Asian food and entertainment to celebrate the New Year.

And they succeeded beautifully!

Shang dynasty people, today the holiday is about spending time with family and sharing blessings and abundance with loved ones. Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. Now it is more focused on family and spending time together with them.

For our part, in addition to the wonderful menu, The Supper Club participated in the Chinese New Year by enjoying presentations by local dancers who originally hail from various Asian countries. These dancers all live (and love) their heritage and share it by continuing their beautiful cultural dances — and performing them for groups like ours.

In addition to family reunions, the Chinese New Year is also a traditional time for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets.

Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include that of good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. For the northern regions of China, dumplings are featured prominently in meals celebrating the festival.

The Chinese opera has also existed since ancient times. The elaborate and colorful opera life-sized mask is an integral part of every performance. The mask identifies the character and actors often play several characters by changing their mask. We were honored to be able to see some of these masks, in all of their detailed artistry.

For some background, Chinese New Year (or generally referred to as Lunar New Year globally) is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China, and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia.

Just like the western world’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, observances traditionally take place beginning the evening preceding the first day of the year. The celebrations continue through to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February.

MARDI GRAS / FAT TUESDAY DRINKS What comes before Ash Wednesday?? FAT TUESDAY, of course! Christians have long celebrated this day overindulging in those foods and drinks they may be giving up for Lent. This FrenchCatholic tradition is alive and well in New Orleans, boasting Carnival festivities, parades and much more.

San Antonio can’t let New Orleans have all the fun! To get in the spirit, a procession of decorated river floats transform the River Walk into a floating Mardi Gras celebration on March 2nd.

Krewes of costumed revelers and live entertainment celebrate San Antonio style. Enjoy live music, entertainment, and food trucks. The public is encouraged to come dressed in masks, costumes, and beads. Admission is free.

If the big crowds of Mardi Gras aren’t your thing, there’s good news….you can bring the party home with these authentic drink recipes!

The Hurricane

Ingredients 2 ounces dark Jamaican rum 1 ounce fresh lemon juice 1 ounce passion fruit syrup Directions Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and add plenty of crushed ice. Shake well and pour, unstrained, into old fashioned glass, tiki mug or Hurricane glass. Garnish with orange slice and a cherry.

Milk Punch

Ingredients 1 ounce brandy (or bourbon) 1 ounce dark rum (or bourbon) 1 teaspoon sugar 2 dashes vanilla extract (optional) 4 to 6 ounces whole milk, to taste Directions Stir well with ice and strain into a large goblet over fresh crushed ice (or, pour everything into a mug and add hot milk). Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Ramos Fizz

Ingredients 2 ounces gin 1 ounce cream 1 egg white 1/2 ounce lemon juice 1/2 ounce lime juice 2 teaspoons sugar, to taste 2-3 drops orange flower water Seltzer Directions Combine everything except seltzer in a cocktail shaker. Shake hard for one to two full minutes with ice. Strain into a chilled Collins glass and add an ounce or two of chilled seltzer, to taste.

French 75

Ingredients 2 ounces gin 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 teaspoons sugar Champagne or sparkling wine Garnish: long thin lemon spiral and cocktail cherry Directions Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Shake gin, lemon juice, and sugar in a cocktail shaker until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into a champagne flute. Top with Champagne. Stir gently, garnish with a long, thin lemon spiral and a cocktail cherry.

SPR IN G BR E A K !

Most of us reading this probably went to college, and even if not, many of us probably have a couple of stories to tell about a wild Spring Break of years gone by. Whether it was Cancun or South Padre, there’s stories out there that involve copious amounts of alcohol, a beach, and a fuzzy recollection. Now that we’re all a little older (and hopefully a lot more mature), our Spring Break goals are probably a little different. Perhaps considering children, we are looking for somewhere to make some memories with our families, and to avoid some of the crowds. With that in mind, let’s dive into a few options that we think would make for some great Spring Break adventures!

RUIDOSO, NEW MEXICO A scant 9 hours from here by car (or just a couple by plane), Ruidoso is a great option for Spring Break fun. Skiing is still in full swing at Ski Apache, which has been around pretty much forever. It’s not Aspen for skiing, but it’s a great family friendly ski park that caters to all skill levels.

With the mountains, there’s a myriad of activities that families can enjoy. Mountain biking is a huge activity in the area, and there’s also one of the world’s longest zip lines at Ski Apache. Try zip-lining for almost 2 miles in length for a Spring Break memory!

Mom and Dad can have some nightlife fun as well, as Ruidoso has a killer brewpub scene, featuring many craft beers and wines. Live music is also a big draw, featuring regional and national acts in every genre imaginable.

Lastly, Ruidoso has a lot of cool history. The downtown district is chock full of historical buildings and art galleries, and then there’s Fort Stanton, which is one the nation’s most well-preserved forts.

PINEY WOODS Before the crushing humidity of summer kicks in, the Piney Woods area of Texas is a great option to see some beautiful scenery and enjoy a variety of small town flair. Starting in Conroe, enjoy some time in the beautiful Lake Conroe. Heading to Cleveland (I know, not exactly #1 on your vacation list), but you can enjoy the killer Sam Houston National Forest. Henderson has a super fun Main Street district that is packed with fun shopping and dining. Jefferson is one of the oldest cities in Texas, going back to the early 1800s, so the historical sight-seeing is amazing.

Longview has a hot air balloon festival each year, and has a vibrant live music scene. Madisonville has another vibrant downtown district as well as beautiful Lake Madison. As you can tell, we could go on and on about the smaller communities that pepper the Piney Woods, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. The scenery is amazing, the history is extremely cool to enjoy, and the small town atmosphere of the Main Street areas are always enjoyable.

FORT CLARK SPRINGS The natural springs surrounding Austin are great, but are also a madhouse typically with the crushing traffic that those sites have.

Fort Clark Springs is our new favorite for a family getaway that includes a great spring fed, constant temperature pool. Located in Brackettville (about 90 miles southwest of San Antonio), it’s a 2700 acre gated resort that is the perfect spot for your family Spring Break trip.

Obviously the pool is a big draw with 68 degree temps year round.

The motel on the property isn’t 5-star by any stretch, but it’s cheap, convenient, and does what you need it to. There’s a golf course on the property that is only $12/person, there’s a gym, hiking/biking trails, wildlife abounds, and there’s even a full museum. Basically, a solid week at Fort Clark Springs would keep everyone busy, is super affordable, and won’t be overwhelmingly busy.

TEXAS DAY TRIPS Lastly, we’ll offer you this idea: open up your Google map and just pick some spots! DRIVING ACCURACY & DISTANCE

In order to maximize DISTANCE & ACCURACY we must strike the ball with the center of the club. A cheap trick to discover if you are hitting center contact is to use a powdered spray (brand does not matter).

Spray the face of your driver and hit several balls. You will be able to clearly see your impact patterns.

Centeredness of contact is the #1 key for both distance & accuracy but below are some fun ideas for you to use that will help you find more fairways and/or launch your drives further.

ACCURACY Grip lower on the club handle. It is easier to control the face of the golf club the closer our hands get to it. By simply moving your hands down the grip and taking our normal swing, you should start to feel that it is easier to find the middle of the clubface at impact. This will lead to straighter drives.

A good drill to practice is to take very small swings with your feet close together. As you get comfortable locating the “sweet spot” at impact you can progressively widen your stance and lengthen your swing.

DISTANCE We all love to hit it far. With today’s equipment the best way to achieve this is, of course solid contact, but also with speed and higher launch angles. Something fun to try to achieve this is to widen your stance, drop your trail foot back about 3 inches (so the ball of your trail foot lines up with the center of your arch on your lead foot) and increase the amount of hip and shoulder tilt you have at address. These things combined will help you maintain a stable base while

generating more turn and promoting more of an upward sweeping motion of the club through the strike zone. In order to maximize your club head speed it is very important that you release any tension in your body. Tension will restrict your movement and we are looking for a deeper turn and lots of speed. Once you have this set up feeling comfortable just swing away and visualize a high soaring ball flight with

a little draw and you will be knocking it past your playing partners in no time.

Remember that nothing is more important for distance or accuracy that hitting the center of the clubface. Please see one of the great PGA Professionals on staff at the Dominion Country club to assist you in improving you game and maximizing your enjoyment of the game.

MIND READER

Picture this, five people are sitting at a table playing poker, they are professionals. The cards are on the table from the dealer, called the river, and they all have a lot of money sitting in the middle. The player to place the last bet has nothing in his hand, no pair, no three of a kind, not even a small straight. He is bluffing. They stare at each other looking for tells that will give them the edge. They have been studying each other from the very start even before the first card was played.

Here is the thing! Every player has a tell (something that gives them away) but what level of distraction is needed before they slip up? This requires intense concentration and conscientious study of one’s opponent.

Now, once a tell is given away there is nothing that player can do to hide it until the next hand is played. In the end the bluffing gambler lost because his tell betrayed him and everyone waited until he bet big money to call his bluff.

This scenario shows the extreme in how important it is to watch the opponent. In tennis it’s very necessary to watch our opponent hit the ball. If you study your opponent like poker players do there is a lot of important information that could help you get ahead in the point. Unlike poker, where you can hide what you are thinking, in tennis you cannot.

We reveal where we are going to hit the ball by the way we stand and where we make contact in reference to our body. Also, if you know that to go down the line a player meets the ball late, but going crosscourt requires us to meet the ball early you get a general idea of what’s coming next.

Learning to recognize this in match play requires practice. Not so much because it’s difficult to read where a player is hitting the 32

next shot but because we have to retrain ourselves to stop watching the tennis ball when it’s on the other side.

Being more aware of what is happening on your opponent’s side of the net can help you make better choices. For instance, if you are firmly in control of the point and don’t see that your opponent is in trouble you may be caught off guard by a short ball and miss an opportunity to move in and finish the point.

Other examples of what to look for are: The player is off balance maybe leaning back or

they are stretched out barely able to reach the ball or they never watch the ball to the strings on the forehand but they always watch the ball better on the backhand.

To practice getting a better idea what’s coming next, grab a hitting partner and rally 20 or more balls in a row without missing. During the rally practice watching the player critically on every swing but only watch the ball after your hitting partner has finished swinging. Also, don’t forget to keep your feet moving.

People recognize that San Antonio has The Riverwalk, families visit for Fiesta Texas and Sea World, our airport is a major hub, and everybody in the world knows that San Antonio has the greatest tacos ever made. Consistently boasting of the highest ZAGAT rating for any restaurant on the Riverwalk, Biga on the Banks is your must-go location for fine dining on the River. Since beginning his career in 1985 and instantly put the Fairmont Hotel’s restaurant, Polo’s, on the map by quickly getting press in Texas Monthly and being named on Esquire Magazine’s “Best Bars and Restaurants List” in 1991.

Tre Trattoria After a decade of operating Tre Trattoria with a location on Broadway, prolific chef Jason Dady moved his extremely popular Italian restaurant down to a weathered industrial warehouse at the San Antonio Musuem of Art, right on the Riverwalk.

Chef Dady is a bit of a rock-star on the world dining scene. Given a penchant for innovation and his “Explore your palate” mantra, Chef Dady has gone from operating Tre Trattoria to operating 5 other concept restaurants throughout the area. He’s been featured in Fine Cooking Magazine, has appeared on CBS Saturday Morning, the Cooking Channel, The Today Show, The Food Network, and has been named “Best Chef in San Antonio” by both the San Antonio Current and San Antonio Magazine, and won CultureMap’s “Chef of the Year” award.

While Chef Dady’s role has transitioned from full-time Chef to full-time mogul, his commitment to perfection at Tre Trattoria is evident by the reviews and the continual awards that the food wins. Tre Trattoria is an eclectic blend of old-world Italian cuisine to farmhouse food with a real handmade flair to every dish. Operating exclusively on electric heat, a feat requiring technique over technology, the head chef Esteban Valdez and culinary director Margeaux Alcorta truly knock it out of the park with their precision and pride.

Botika Chef-Owner of Botika, Geronimo Lopez, knows a few things about cooking as well.

So much so that preceding the opening of Botika, he was Executive Chef and Instructor of Culinary Arts at San Antonio’s renowned Culinary Institute of America. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Lopez has more than 20 years experience as a chef in six countries, including serving as executive chef at top hotels and resorts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Dubrovnik, Croatia, Mexico, and Venezuela.

Earlier in his career, Lopez worked in chef and management positions in several restaurants and hotels in France and Venezuela. He was also an instructor at La Casserole du Chef culinary school in Caracas.

He studied international business at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas and culinary arts at the Hotel School of Beaune in France.

With his resume as long as it is, it’s no wonder that Botika, opened in 2016 at The Pearl, is a roaring success and recently won The Best Restaurant at the Pearl award.

Featuring a menu that is classified as “Flavors and Influences from Asia and South America”, prepare for an exotic culinary adventure. The San Antonio Express News cited “Geronimo Lopez leads a team that renders these usually unfamiliar flavors approachable without dumbing down the cuisine, and he provides a dining experience that’s a must for anybody in San Antonio who takes food seriously.”

Word on the street is that the best way to sample Botika’s menu is to take your dishes as small plates, or picaderas. You’ll be able to bounce around the menu, countering the heat of the wasabi with the coolness of the tuna tartar and you’ll be able to best sample the exotic and probably unknown flavors for many diners.

Ask questions at Botika. You’ll likely not know all of the ingredients, but your server can offer some great explanations. But don’t ask too many questions – after all, Chef Lopez is a teacher, but his classroom is one of hottest restaurants in town.

Meadow Neighborhood Eatery + Bar One of the area’s newest hot restaurants, Meadow, located in the Alley on Bitters boasts of a concept that was inspired to offer San Antonians a true farm-driven menu with seasonally shifting entrees. Chef PJ Edwards brings an extensive resume as owner of Meadow, as most recently he was the Culinary Director for Contigo Restaurant Group in Austin, and wife Lindsey was previously the General Manager for the forementioned Jason Dady Restaurant Group.

The loss of PJ from Austin to San Antonio sparked several articles in the local press bemoaning the loss of one of Austin’s most sought after and celebrated chefs in a town that can be quite picky with their dining.

San Antonio is lucky to have him, because Meadow Neighborhood Eatery + Bar simply delivers. As the name implies, it’s familiar foods. You’ll recognize Baby Lettuce Salad, and fried chicken, and grilled pork loin. The difference is in the details. House pickled pickles abound and raise the bar more than you might think. Pickling can be one of the least appreciated culinary arts, yet it can also be one of the most effective. The pickled items add so much flavor to every dish they touch, and they touch a lot. From the salads to the burgers and everything in between, they set a wonderful tone for the passion that lives in the menu.

As for the menu, you’ve had cornbread before, right? What about “moist cornbread and honeyed lard with pimento cheese”? Or how about “cornmeal fritters with creamed corn and sweet marmalade spiked with ‘nduja salami”?

With a full bar overseen by bar-master Nick Martinez, it features cocktails that complement the evening with sophistication and high-end flavors and liquors that you’d expect.

It’s early in the game for Meadow as it just opened a few months ago, but based on the buzz, the experience, and the exhilarating menu we sampled, we see big things for Meadow Neighborhood Eatery + Bar. Get in now before the rest of the city realizes what Chef Edwards has cooking.

ALEXIS LOPEZ

Alexis Lopez, also known as Baby Lopes on the tennis courts, is a top junior in Texas. She is a junior at Clark High school and is very active in their tennis program and also trains with many of the coaches at The Club. She is determined to achieve a Division I tennis scholarship and her hard work is paying off.

Her love of tennis comes from her parents. Her father played tennis for Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University). Her mother also played there for a short while. Alexis started playing when she was ten years old.

With three other siblings, all in different sports, this family knows the dedication required to become great athletes.

Alexis’ participation in Dominion Tennis Academy (DTA) has contributed to a fun, competitive environment at the club. She told us The Dominion was like her second home. She is a fantastic role model for our younger kids in the academy.

Alexis has had impressive performances at state and national tournaments.

Even with her notable accomplishments, she maintains a humble, enthusiastic attitude. We continue to have fun on the courts and are developing her game for the next level.

Coach Julian says Alexis has been easy to coach with her determination to succeed. Her positive attitude, respect for the game, and fun personality make coaching a joy.

THE DOMINION GIVES

HEARTS NEED ART In 2016, Constanza incorporated Hearts Need Art, an organization with the goal of honoring and celebrating the lives of patients, regardless of whether their conditions are treatable or not. This has evolved into the group’s now formal mission of promoting emotional and spiritual wellbeing among those affected by cancer and other illnesses through the creative arts.

“I felt strongly that God was calling me to do this. Despite that, I was initially resistant.

I didn’t feel like I knew anything about starting an organization. The very first song I ever sang for a patient was “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” and I’ll never forget watching as the tension left the patient’s body and the tears left her eyes. That’s the moment I stopped resisting.”

Constanza Roeder is a woman possessed of a passion for her nonprofit organization like few I have ever before encountered.

Constanza grew up in Santa Cruz, California and was diagnosed with leukemia at age thirteen. She underwent 130 weeks of chemo at Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, which means she knows a thing or two about the experiences that long-term cancer patients go through while battling their illness. And while that experience was about as difficult as it gets for a young child, she had access throughout to an arts in health program that promoted health and wellbeing—a resource many cancer patients across the U.S. do not have.

“That was a powerful experience for me.

When you’re a patient, you’re feeling lots of emotions that you don’t really want to share with loved ones—anger, disappointment, etc.

But a blank piece of canvas doesn’t care—I was able to express anything I wanted. That experience meant I could take my pain and transform it into something beautiful. At a time when I felt powerless, that was an empowering experience.”

In addition to the powerful impact of art and music on her own personal treatment and recovery, the experience also had a direct 46

effect on Constanza’s educational choices later in life. She has a degree in voice and psychology, and has spent a good part of her life performing opera, teaching music, participating in local theater, and playing piano.

She and her Navy husband moved to San Antonio ten years ago and she immediately began searching for an oncology-based volunteer opportunity. While she was working at Methodist Hospital, staffers learned of her singing ability and asked if she could sing for patients. Initially shocked at the difference in available services for cancer patients here versus her childhood experience in California, she seized the opportunity, and that turned out to be the start of what would eventually become Hearts Need Art. “Imagine being stuck on an oncology floor for weeks or months at a time with little to occupy your time. To make matters worse, many patients are immuno-compromised as a result of their ongoing treatment, meaning they can’t leave the floor. When I started singing in 2010, going room to room, it was truly transformative, for them and for me, so much so that patients frequently wept in gratitude and begged for more.”

Now, nearly a decade since that first song, the organization has twelve regular artists on rotation, has brought in more than seventy-five one-time musicians to perform concerts—both bedside and in common areas for groups—and also leads art classes, instrument lessons (ukulele is popular), and yoga and meditation classes. To date, they’ve provided art experiences for more than two thousand people and created visual arts galleries visited by more than six thousand.

They’ve even had outpatients return as artists, one of whom is a concert pianist who has begun providing music in the same clinic where she was treated.

“The arts transcend culture and background, and they are common to the human experience. It becomes a safe place of vulnerability for patients, allowing them room to breath and to remember what’s important in their lives and relationships.

Our primary purpose in starting Hearts Need Art was to create a conduit between the arts and healthcare communities in order to facilitate artistic expression in healthcare settings.”

To help make that happen, Constanza developed a training system to take a person from professional artist to artist in a healthcare setting. Her first two recruits

There’s no denying, though, that patients regularly report lower levels of pain, anxiety, and loneliness.”

In addition to expanding the options available at Methodist, Constanza is leading the effort to expand to other area healthcare centers (there are forty-five oncology centers in San Antonio alone, not including hospices and rehabilitation centers). Her long-term vision is to see art integrated into the healthcare system across the U.S., as well as integrating it into daily life as a healthcare management strategy. There is already a National Organization for Arts in Health (NOAH), as well as several higher education programs that specialize in arts in health programs, up to and including Masters degrees. But other areas of the world are well ahead of the U.S. in this endeavor (notably the UK), and there is much to be learned by working with colleagues there. Because of their NOAH membership, Hearts Need Art representatives regularly attend conferences around the country and compare practices and success stories with counterparts in New York, Houston, and elsewhere.

“If your only measure of healthcare success is preventing death, then our success rate is zero. If we switch our mindset to one of supporting and enriching life, we can always be successful at that. But it requires a fundamental shift in how we approach healthcare and life in general. And it’s not just about cancer, but healthcare overall.

Everyone should have access to programs like this as a basic human right.”

Constanza ended our conversation by sharing an anecdote:

“We are reintroducing people to the power of their own creativity, enabling them to return to their own personal healing spaces.

“One of the long-term patients was asked if she wanted to have a go at learning to play the ukulele. She agreed and began taking regular lessons every Thursday morning.

After a couple months, she was informed by her doctor that because of the success of her treatments, she could finally go home, to which she replied, “But I can’t leave. I have my ukulele lesson. Can I stay just a little longer?”

This story, and others like it, demonstrate that the Hearts Need Art program is transforming how people view healthcare as a means to holistically promote health and wellbeing.

“We started with one day a week of programs in 2016. Now we’re in the hospital every day of the week. We’re working to humanize the healthcare experience.”

GOOD READS

THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ tattoos number 34902 into her arm. Over the next three years, their love keeps them going until the end of the European war and they escape, but in separate ways.

Life at Auschwitz/Birkenau is brutal and barbaric, as described in many other works.

But the telling here becomes more intimate because the main characterizer and his loved one are real survivors. Many scenes come alive as when the author vividly portrays the soccer match between the SS and prisoners, some of them semiprofessionals. The shrewdness of Lale matches his compassion as seen in the episode where he saves a young prisoner from the hangman. And the continual rape of Cilka, a beautiful prisoner allowed to keep her long hair, ultimately saves Lale’s life. His practice of getting and trading cash and jewels from murdered Jews for food is eventually discovered and he narrowly escapes death.

The theme of unity in adversity is seen in the close relationship Late forms with the gypsies.

“They share memories and stories of family life, captivated by the differences and similarities between their cultures.” They agree that in another life, they would have nothing to do with each other. “I would have crossed the street if I saw you walking toward me.”

When all the gypsies are exterminated, Lale becomes despondent. Gita gives words of encouragement. “…you will honor them by staying alive, surviving this place and telling the world what happened here.” And that is exactly what THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ does.

Yes, I am recommending yet another book about WWII and concentration camps. THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ by Heather Morris is more than a novel. It is a true story related by the main character Lale Sokolav, a Slovakian Jew, to the author. Morris visited Late two to three times a week and his story took three years to untangle. She states, “As the teller of Lale’s story, I had to identify how memory and history sometimes strain to present a lesson in history, of which there are many, but a unique lesson 48

in humanity.” Love and hope between Lale and fellow prisoner Gita are the essential tools for survival in the devastating and demoralizing world of the camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau.

After his transportation to the concentration camps, Lale is made the “Tatowierer” (tattooist), a position that allows his shrewdness and charm to work for selfsurvival and that of his fellow prisoners. It was love at first sight when he sees Gita and

This true story of Lale and Gita ends on a happy and successful note. After their separate escapes, they miraculously found each other in Bratislava. They eventually settled in Melbourne, Australia, in 1949.

Lale entered the textile trade and Gita started designing women”s clothing. They were blessed with parenthood in 1961.

Their son Gary was born when Gita was thirty-six and Late forty-four. - another miracle in their lives!

Ed has lost 7 lbs. He has been doing weight workouts 3 to 4 days per week with Jess. “My goal is to gain strength through weight training along with taking Dominion Group Fitness classes.”

Dave is focused on improving his flexibility and strength because, as he told me “I want to improve my golf game.” He is utilizing the square method. One of the best ways to gain strength and flexibility for most people is yoga, and Dave is taking yoga classes at Dominion. “I hope to increase my range of motion, mobility, and balance”. Dave looks forward to getting back on the course next month and hopefully will be able to play a minimum of a great 9 holes of golf.

Welcome To WIMBERLEY

Wimberley, Texas, just a quick hour drive north of San Antonio is truly the best of rustic Hill Country charm, coupled with a sophistication that few Hill Country towns can boast. While some might be known for live music, or some others for shopping, and even some others for their natural offerings such as rivers or lakes, Wimberley truly offers it all. If you haven’t been, or if you haven’t been in the last few years, you’re in for a treat.

Prehistoric Wimberley was home to native Americans, and evidence of their presence is found near now extinct stream beds and along the river. 16th century Spanish explorers came here looking for gold and adventure and by the 17th century Spanish church representatives arrived to stake a claim on the population and natural wealth.

By the mid-1800s several families were living in this area, and explorers and adventurers from the southern states came to the Hill Country. Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, James Bowie and David Crockett became legends and died in the more populous areas here. Land along waterways was sought after, and trading posts were established near stream crossings. First came the grist and flour mills, followed by schools and churches. Thus a village was formed at the little trading post at Cypress Creek. This was Wimberley.

In the mid 19th-century, William Winters built a two-room cut limestone home on the north side hill of Cypress Creek and constructed the first grist mill on Cypress Creek. The home and mill were eventually purchased by Pleasant Wimberley for $8,000 in gold. His family moved here and the mill was used for a flour, grist, sorghum, as a saw mill and a cotton gin. Pleasant also helped establish a church and a school here. In 1880 an application for a post office for "Wimberleyville" was made, and the postmaster general shortened the name and granted it.

Thus, Wimberley became an official postal destination.

And, as they say, the rest is history.

Wimberley is blessed with a location on the banks of Cypress Creek and the Blanco River surrounded by the Texas Hill Country. As a result, there are great outdoor activities nearby.

SHOPPING Wimberley is full of unique shops that offer traditional and not-sotraditional art and wares. Although the primary shopping areas are clustered around the “Square” and “Olde Towne Plaza”, there are also shops sprinkled throughout other areas. The first Saturday of each month, March through December, Market Days draws visitors from around the state.

THEATRE Many rural towns had outdoor movie theatres years ago. Wimberley still has one. The Corral Theatre features first run movies every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can even bring your own chair. Call (512) 847-2513 or visit www.corraltheatre.com for shows and times. If your taste runs to live theatre, try the EmilyAnn Theatre or the Wimberley Players for year round theatrical events.

SITE-SEEING For those who just like to walk and see the sites, Wimberley is full of beautiful views and rich history. A pause at the bridge over Cypress Creek and — for the more vigorous — a hike up the steps to the top of Old Baldy, are ways to appreciate nature and beautiful scenic vistas while in Wimberley.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES Wimberley offers many unique art galleries, including Wimberley Glass Works, with entertaining glass blowing demonstrations six days a week. Every second Saturday, join the Second Saturday Gallery Trail – galleries in and aound the Wimberley Square stay open late and offer wine and appetizers to go with the art. If golf is your game, enjoy an afternoon of golf at the 18-Hole Quicksand at Woodcreek Golf Course. If you prefer tennis, contact The Wimberley Community Tennis Association. Wimberley is also home to the Wimberley Valley Winery, Wimberley Brewing Company, Middleton Brewing, Driftwood Winery, The Shady Llama and the Cypress Creek Reserve which is a rum distillery. Each of these places offers tastings and tours. CAMPING – SWIMMING – HIKING The City of Wimberley offers swimming at the historic Blue Hole on Cypress Creek beginning weekends in May. Open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day and on weekends in September. Jacob’s Well Natural Area offers free tours on Saturdays at 9:00am. Swimming in the artesian well is available with a reservation May 1 through Labor Day Weekend. Cypress Falls Swimming Hole beckons with beautiful views of the iconic Eagle Rock grotto and is a family friendly, picnic and dog friendly, bring your own chair friendly place.

DINING Jobell Café and Bistro – one of our more favorite restaurants we’ve visited in a while. Fancy, yet comfortable. Simple dishes, yet elaborate ones as well…presented professionally. While the menu has changed a bit there remains many of the favorites and has the great addition of pizza. The stone pizza oven produces thin and perfectly crisp crust.

Their pastas are made in house fresh daily and they now have a chef’s special ravioli served at market price. Favorites such as Calamari Fritti, Cioppino Alla Toscana, Pollo Gorgonzola, Pollo Marsala, Snapper Di Aldo and Filleto Alla Griglia remain unchanged.

The house salad that is included with all entrees is also a delicious staple with its signature light and tangy vinaigrette. Their desserts are some of my favorite in San Antonio, including their delightful creamy cheesecake served with strawberries, chocolate cake and their classic spumoni.

Like an old friend, I never get tired of visiting Aldo’s. While it was unfortunate to see the unique and cozy converted house setting close in January, I am thrilled to have Aldo’s new site right outside of The Dominion gates.

Located in a renovated space at Dominion Ridge Shopping Center, you will no doubt find a bustling atmosphere and friendly faces. First opening on Fredericksburg Road in 1985, Aldo’s has been a San Antonio Italian dining favorite for locals ever since with 64

its spectacular old-world cuisine. In my experience, the service is always top notch and the food consistently served with class and culinary expertise. The new location has a much more contemporary vibe with beautiful glass lighting, “living” artwork, two private rooms with televisions and an addition of a large horseshoe shaped bar that seats approximately twenty four with two four-top tables alongside. Wow, what a great transformation!

Aldo’s is also now open for Sunday brunch serving traditional fare with an Italian twist.

I tried the Pancetta Eggs Benedict with delicious Dijon hollandaise and roasted potatoes, Isalata di Salmone with field greens, cherry tomatoes, avocado, boiled eggs with vinaigrette and Pollo Picatta with pasta, mushrooms, capers, tomatoes and artichokes in a light white wine sauce. The Ricotta Pancakes with lemon curd macerated berries and Vermont maple syrup are perfectly fluffy and sweet. Also on the brunch menu are such options as Rigatoni Alla Siciliana, Breakfast Filleto with poached eggs & roasted potatoes and Costolette D’Agnelloperfectly grilled lamb chops served with a vegetable medley & roasted potatoes. Five dollar Bloody Marys and mimosas made with your choice of juice are also on the brunch menu… peach is my favorite!

ALVIS & THE BIG GIVE Alvis is a handsome 3 year old, 65 pound Bluetick hound mix who was homeless before being rescued by DAAG. He is friendly to all and eager to please. He enjoys a walk around the block but doesn’t need a Zumba class to expend his energy.

Alvis is house and crate trained. He does not hunt other than for a toy or treat. Alvis has been treated for heart worms and is now on preventative medication. He is neutered and current on vaccinations.
