MAKING MASKS FOR AMERICA BHC's Gary Crandall Fills the Need When news of the Coronavirus broke, BHC member Gary Crandall’s first thought was “I’d like to do what I can in this fight.” Crandall did just that in the early 90’s during the Gulf War, pivoting his Ohio-based pool company’s manufacturing efforts toward producing camouflage covers for M1 tanks and Apache helicopters. “It quickly became apparent that if we wanted to engage in this war against the Coronavirus, we’d have to take action on our own. With masks in dire demand, I put one of my engineers to work, researching on Google how to manufacture them. We made the first prototypes that day.” CONTINUED TO P. 02

at the club

Local businesses, church groups and home volunteers in the Ohio area stepped in to take part. “We provide a safe pickup for the mask kits," he added. "People have driven over an hour to get them, sew them and bring them back to us. The American spirit is alive and well." Learn more about fellow member Gary Crandall’s efforts to deliver help where it’s needed most. Both nationally and locally, his contributions have garnered media coverage. MEMBER MAKING A DIFFERENCE: CAROL CHILLEMI We've heard about the small acts of kindness taking place nationwide, and right here at home, member Carol Chillemi has done her part by sewing masks for those in our Berkeley Hall community. "My desire was to help our neighbors and friends," said Mrs. Chillemi. She assembled a small group of volunteers to assist in this effort and together they have sewn over 200 masks. Her wish to help our community is the very definition of the acts of kindness that matter most and reflect the heart of our Berkeley Hall family.

HYDRANGEAS: WHATEVER THE HUE Yes, you can choose your favorite In the 18th century, gardeners first noticed the miraculous magic of the varied-hued hydrangea and experimented with it - spreading buried rusty nails around plantings, even chanting spells, among other methods. But what was really happening was not magic, but science. The pH of the soil determines the color of this beautiful flower, specifically how much aluminum they take from the soil. A low pH of less than 6.0 gives you cool blue or lavender blooms, while alkaline soil with pH above 7.0 blossoms with pinks and reds. Learn the how-tos from the Old Farmer's Almanac: click here

CHEF'S TABLE (continuned from page 1

From our Table to Yours: The Rhett's butler, William Deas, was asked to create a fancier version of their traditional crab soup. He added the orange-hued crab eggs of mature female crabs, called “she crabs” by fishermen, to give color and improve flavor, inventing the Charleston delicacy known as “She Crab Soup.”

This well-known Southern charmer is sure to please! Directions: In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. When butter is foamy, add onion, celery and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally until onion is soft and translucent. Reduce heat to med-low, whisk in flour, stirring constantly until mixture lightens in color, 7 to 8 minutes. Do not let the flour turn brown. Stir in Old Bay, nutmeg, pepper, and bay leaf. Once spices become aromatic, add clam juice, sherry and white wine. Increase heat to medium and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently for 10 minutes. Stir in crab roe, if desired, continue to simmer for 15 minutes. Add milk and cream, return to a simmer and cook for another 15 minutes. Remove bay leaf and thyme, then puree with a blender or immersion blender until smooth. Stir in lemon juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire, and season to taste with salt. Stir in crab meat & serve.
