We’ve all been there: The decorations are put away and the pressure is on for the “new year, new you.” Instead of becoming frustrated when your best efforts are abandoned by February, try these tips to achieve your goals!

BE SPECIFIC

A common resolution is to “eat better” in the new year. This is a great place to start, but hard to gauge progress when the goal is so broad. • Eat 2-3 servings of vegetables every day • Drink 8 oz of water every hour

REWARD YOURSELF

• Find a non-food reward, i.e. massage or new pair of shoes!

FIND BALANCE

A goal everyone should work toward in 2022 is maintaining or improving core strength and balance. A recent study found those 50-yrs and older may find it hard to stand on one foot for 40 seconds. Poor balance doesn’t always coincide with age, it’s related to muscle mass, agility, and strength. Try these simple ways to improve balance and strengthen your core: • Try pilates, tai chi, or yoga which can strengthen the deep core muscles while synchronizing the movement with your breathing. • Practice standing on one foot, challenging yourself to increase duration. Increase the challenge by raising your foot higher or holding out to the side. If difficult, start by using a chair back or bathroom counter for support. • Walk heel-to-toe, as if on a balance beam. • Get in and out of a chair without using your hands. • Exercise while standing on a wobble board or Bosu ball. January 1st doesn’t have to be the only day to set goals. Make each day a new effort to become the best version of you!
