SPRING GOLF TOURNAMENTS BELOVED COMMISH: MEN’S SATURDAY GAME MEMBER-TO-MEMBER: CHARTER OAK LADIES EASTER AT BERKELEY HALL

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE complete and Beaufort County has approved our River Park enhancement plan so you’ll see it getting underway in April and May. We’re drawing close to finalized plans for the Ladies Locker Room, where some initial work has already begun, installing new equipment at the Fitness Center and renovating the Tennis Courts. Around the Clubhouse, Phase I renovations continue to transform our space, and our team has not missed a beat as we update our current amenities in anticipation of the Veranda and Mixed Grille grand-opening. We’ll be communicating with you more on that later! Springtime in the Lowcountry ushers in many of our favorite events and traditions from our Berkeley Hall-style Easter Celebration to the Mixed Member-Member. And by May, we look forward to enjoying our beautiful golf view from our new Veranda, gathering for post-game drinks and dining al fresco with family and friends.

Phase I is not the only construction taking place, we also have 50+ homes under construction with more submissions to the ARB each month. We hope to close on 10 club-owned lots by June, Stanley Martin has begun their first four homes, and The Reed Group also has four homes under construction.

From wine dinners to stargazing, a picnic evening in the Savannah Gardens, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and more, we have many special events planned. And nothing says quintessential Lowcountry better than our Lowcountry Boil kickoff to Easter weekend.

I cannot think of a better time to be a part of Berkeley Hall. We have a great story to tell and as we move towards 500 homes, we’d love for you to share it with your family and friends. This is a wonderful time to come join us and enjoy all we have to offer, for the best of Lowcountry living Berkeley Hall-style

As we move towards the end of the first quarter for 2022, you can see our momentum throughout the community. At the River Park, our dock renovation is

Valerie Kidd Appointed Controller

The ARB is a busy place and that's a good thing! Our goal is to maintain consistent ARB standards throughout Berkeley Hall. The result is a smooth and efficient review, approval and construction experience which adds to the architectural diversity and beauty of the community. We're here to help, and you'll find Jennifer Johnson's door (our ARB Administrator) is always open. Whether you're thinking

about landscaping enhancements, home renovations or just some good referrals, you're welcome to stop by with any questions you may have. We've also compiled a library of often-asked-for member requests, such as applications for painting, exterior improvements, and more. You can find them under the My Club tab on the member website as well as the BHC App.

We'd love to hear from you! Contact Jennifer with any inquiries at 843.815.8443 | jjohnson@berkeleyhallclub.com

meet Jennifer Johnson, ARB Administrator Jennifer Johnson has been appointed ARB Administrator for Berkeley Hall. Jennifer brings extensive experience in custom homebuilding, design and architectural administration. Her background with ARB and the designer/build industry will further enhance our building experience at the Club.

Banks Design Group located on Hilton Head Island. Originally from Virginia, Jennifer was raised abroad before relocating to South Carolina and later settling in the Lowcountry with her family.

Krista Dunton & Will McGirt Team Up at BHC Can't think of too many places you can enjoy a golf demo with PGA Tour Winner Will McGirt (and BHC resident) and Director of Golf Instruction Krista Dunton – but that's exactly what BHC members were treated to back in January. With mildly cool temps, we had nearly 100 attendees and hope to do one again soon. Thanks to all who came out, and thanks especially to Will and Krista for all the incredible tips! 4

community news

Thanks to our Membership for your tremendous response and participation in our recent Member Satisfaction Survey. With well-over 600 responses, several positive areas stood out. Take a look below as we share some of our key take-aways from the Survey. When asked if Members would recommend Berkeley Hall to a friend, the average score came back as a 9 out of 10.

s Phase I’s transformation draws us closer to our Spring GrandOpening, it’s exciting to consider our incredible momentum. Together, we look forward to our May debut and to celebrating with all of you. Very special attention to Berkeley Hall’s reimagined spaces begins in the central Grand Hall. As the heart of the Clubhouse, the gracious interiors set the tone for a welcoming entrance. A sense of what’s to come. Finely crafted, exquisite details and a total transformation of the space with lighter fabrics and textures elevate the Mixed Grille’s luxurious interiors. Within the newly painted coffered ceiling, a special surprise draws the eye to pearlized embossed leather inset. Hand-crafted chandeliers with antiqued gold-leaf finish and quartz crystal accents cast soft light, illuminating

this luminous space. The fireplace, a special piece crafted by Francois & Co., is a nod to the classic architecture of Lowcountry elegance. The newly imagined Veranda draws us out for casual gatherings with relaxed sofas and comfortable armchairs anchored by a welcoming, large-scale brick fireplace. Here, furnishings and finishes feature the light color palette of our surroundings, off-white, mossy green, and soft brick, extending out to gorgeous golf views. Seating options include large, round tables, counter height dining and relaxed bar seating, as well as casual firepit seating. The open-air outdoor kitchen adds to the Club’s culinary experience, for the many-to-come shared events to be enjoyed with good friends and family year-round. Stay tuned for grand opening details to come.

As we look at the importance of each amenity to the overall Membership, it is clear our strategic plan and finances are in alignment with Membership. The golf courses ranked #1 and F&B ranked #2. Both items are at the forefront of the strategic plan. When reading comments and areas that we have opportunities, we didn’t find any real surprises. This tells us that Club Management and the Board have a broad understanding of where we need to improve. Our goal for 2022 will be to address those issues and see how many we can knock off the list for the next survey. These surveys will help us formulate additional goals for 2022, and set a baseline for future surveys. Again, thank you to all our Members for taking the time to participate. It’s an essential element of the Club’s ongoing effort to improve upon our services and fulfill our mission as a premier private golf community.

MAR 7 | 3PM LADIES LOCKER ROOM “Dragonfly” by Leila Meacham At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds – a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer – all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of their own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly. Thus begins a riveting cat-and-mouse game. But...is everything as it seems, or is this one more elaborate act of spycraft? Review: Goodreads APR 4 | 3PM LADIES LOCKER ROOM “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Daves Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers – Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. GOLFING LIFE AT THE CLUB STARTS ANEW EACH SPRING. As always at this time of the year, we’re enjoying the Lowcountry’s early spring weather. The golf courses are shaping up for some wonderful golf over the next few months, and as we add in great member events, it’s another outstanding season of golf at Berkeley Hall. The opening of BHC Spring Tournament Season is anticipated as much as our Spring weather. Get ready to usher in the season beginning with the Mixed Member-Member in March, along with two One-Day Member-Guests. The challenge (and fun) kicks up a notch toward the end of April with our popular Member-Member. Along with many great golf events this Spring, the Club is hosting Demo Days with all our major club manufacturers, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, and Titleist.

Whether you’re looking for a whole new bag of clubs, or just one or two new and improved clubs to add to your bag, we will do our best to help you find what you need. And of course, if you miss the Demo Days while the manufacturers are here, our Berkeley Hall Professional Staff is always available for in-house fittings.

While many clubs have their signature events, nothing defines our friendly camaraderie better than the Member-Member. We consider this to be the jewel in the crown of the Spring season – so make sure to sign-up and reserve your placement!

WITH KRISTA DUNTON Mar 3-5 | March 29-31 | April 7-9 | April 26-28 $1,850/pp Non-Member | $1,650/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

members Carol and Marc Dulude found their way to Berkeley Hall from Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson, MA, back in the Club’s early days, when they decided to come down in 2006 for a discovery visit. In those days, the golf shop was housed in a golf cottage! Originally from Canada, the Duludes moved to Massachusetts 30 years ago. Both avid golfers, they were looking for somewhere down South, with good golf and warm weather, when Marc first became aware of Berkeley 18

The South Course wasn’t even open yet!” They purchased a lot, planning to come down until ready for a permanent move. “Of course, we started making trips just about every year with my friends from Charter Oak and we brought our kids down and they loved it too,” added Carol. One of those friends happened to be Susan Yahn, who

Jon and Laura Kennedy called last summer and said, “We’re ready to come down more!” said Carol, adding, “They bought on Hopsewee, and have young kids, so hope to be here full-time in a few years.”

GOLF MAINTENANCE UPDATE

ON THE GREENS

W

hat a winter! November was very cool and dry, followed by an unseasonably warm December, and an unseasonably cold January. Fortunately, the groundhog was wrong, as we head into spring on the early side. What impact does this weather have on the golf course, and how might it affect us this season? While 2021 produced 70+ inches of rain (historical average is 49 inches), November, December, and January were dry for the most part. The dry weather helped with winter conditions. I do believe our cultural practices from this summer have benefited the courses, we have identified more areas that need more sand and deep aeration. We will continue to pinpoint these areas and aggressively attack them during our summer aeration schedules. Our goal with the North Course overseed was to improve thin lies, wet fairways, but also have a successful transition. We planned to overseed the fairways at half the rate that was used on the South Course before the re-grass. Unfortunately, due to the golf schedule, we had to overseed a few weeks later than originally planned. While it was nice to have a dry November, the cool weather and lack of rainfall did not help the overseed. At that time of year, we

can only water so much because the sunlight levels and temperatures are so low. Irrigation coverage is inconsistent at times when used over multiple days and we made the decision to back off so the rough was not too wet that we could not dry it back out. Despite having a good winter from a moisture standpoint, a little more rain at the overseed window would have helped immensely. The warm December allowed the tifsport bermudagrass to thrive and out-compete the rye grass at times.

weed population, and the overseed presents even more challenges to controlling poa. We are using new products as we continue to work toward eliminating poa, with the knowledge it will take some time to reduce the poa seed bank. Cool weather has allowed the teams on both courses to attack the sand deficiency in the bunkers on both golf courses – by adding 250 tons of sand to the bunkers on each golf course, with roughly another 150 to go. Beautification efforts are also

Once we get some consistently warm weather, the tifsport and rye grass will work synergistically to give us a great surface from late winter and into the spring. The cold January made the tifsport go completely dormant which has showed some of the imperfection of the overseed in dry and high traffic areas. While from an aesthetic standpoint it is not a consistent green color, the tifsport is holding its density in these areas. Once we get some consistently warm weather, the tifsport and rye grass will work synergistically to give us a great surface from late winter and into the spring. Our Agronomy team has remained persistent and forceful with the control of poa annua. The North Course had a much higher poa and

ongoing, as we enhance the bunkers and make other small improvement projects on both courses. Improvements to the North Course native areas, Learning Center and Practice Area are part of the plan and we hope to implement many of them this season and beyond. In tandem, we are developing our agronomic plan to improve playing conditions on both golf courses for a consistent playing experience. These improvements to the infrastructure and overall playing conditions, will further enhance the member experience this season.
