Kristin Hannah's The Four Winds is a stirring tale of love and hardship in Dust Bowl-era America. As the Dust Bowl ravages Texas, one woman must make a choice: Leave the farm that has been her family’s livelihood or stay and risk succumbing to cyclones of dirt. Kristin Hannah’s absorbing novel begins a few years before, when it seemed Elsa Wolcott might finally have a peaceful, fulfilling life ahead. After a rough childhood, she met Rafe Martinelli, the soulful, handsome son of Italian immigrants. Unlike any other person in her life, he made her feel valued. She moved in with his family, and they raised two children while they worked the earth. Elsa is resilient, her tireless efforts to keep her family well bring her to pack them up and head west. On the journey she contends with the hardships of picking cotton for pitiful wages, and the weaker wills of men around her, who abandon family or run ruthless corporate farms that exploit their employees. Praised by Karin Slaughter and Megan Abbott, The Marsh King’s Daughter is the mesmerizing tale of a woman who must risk everything to hunt down the dangerous man who shaped her past and threatens to steal her future: her father. Helena Pelletier has a loving husband, two beautiful daughters, and a business that fills her days. But she also has a secret: she is the product of an abduction. Her mother was kidnapped as a teenager by her father and kept in a remote cabin in the marshlands of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Helena, born two years after the abduction, loved her home in nature, and despite her father’s sometimes brutal behavior, she loved him, too…until she learned precisely how savage he could be.
