Summertime in the Lowcountry brings so many of our families together, to enjoy longer days that linger into soft sunsets and all the summer fun that comes along with it.
At Berkeley Hall, our Grand Fourth of July Celebration is one of our most treasured traditions. From our Liberty Bell 5k and Cart Parade to the Grand Fireworks Showcase, our stellar line-up of events are the best way to enjoy July Fourth weekend with good friends and family!
This year, we’re excited to welcome new Executive Chef James Kremer just in time to celebrate a BHC-style Fourth of July. He comes onboard with the talented support of our culinary team, a planned culinary succession, and one which further refines the culinary distinction of Berkeley Hall dining.
On the North Course, the bright days of summer are upon us as our Agronomy team’s regrassing project gets into full
swing – and it’s looking great! While around the Clubhouse, enhancement projects are underway in the Berkeley Room, Tap Room and Men’s Locker Room.
Soon we’ll be talking about the 2024 Charity Cup, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s signature fundraising event –registration opens on August 1st! With a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry, the foundation board looks forward, with a recently created Endowment Fund to ensure grant-making continues well into the future. Please learn more on pages 4-5.
Down at the Fitness Center, we welcome Maria Swartz, our new Director of Fitness Operations, so please stop by and say hello. It’s a busy hub of wellness from personal training to fitness classes, swimming and paddleboard sessions, and lots of summer days by the pool. Not to mention TPI training, PT and more. In this issue, we share a great member PT success story, “Life is Good!” In Emmett Patterson’s words, he’s the luckiest man in the world, and you can read all about it on page 22.
Coastal living in the summer brings us out for casual dining, easy happy hours and those languid Lowcountry evenings we love on the Verandah. Enjoy them to the fullest!
Cheers to a great summer!

Ensuring Our Future: Creating an Endowment
Our Berkeley Hall community has a rich history of philanthropy in the Lowcountry.
Making a Difference is what the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation is known for. Over the years, the foundation has raised significant funds, and furthered our giving impact within the greater area.
Now, as we look forward, the foundation board has created an Endowment Fund to ensure our important grant-making continues, helping those most vulnerable in the greater Bluffton area and shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
“We believe the endowment provides a strong foundation of stewardship, one that would ensure the future of BHCF’s mission to make a difference locally,” said Lisa Temple, Board Chair. “It was former chair John Kourakos’ passion that first brought the endowment campaign to the foundation board, and we’re very pleased to share this exciting new opportunity with our community.”
Endowed funds differ from others in that the total amount of the gift is invested. Each year, only a portion of the income earned is spent while the remainder is added to the principal for growth. In this respect, an endowment is a perpetual gift, honor and legacy.
“As we look toward tomorrow, the endowment will provide the foundation with financial stability and enable members to make gifts that will have a lasting impact,” shares Mike Brocato, endowment campaign co-chair.
HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENDOWMENT?
Member opportunities to participate in building the endowment include direct contributions, inclusion in planned giving, and tiered giving over a five-year period.
BHCF ENDOWMENT PLAQUE
Those who donate at an endowment sponsorship level, ranging from the $5,000 Fazio Level up to the $50,000 Platinum Level, by the end of this year, will receive recognition on the BHCF Endowment Fund Plaque showcased at the Clubhouse. (May be a one to five-year pledge.)
For more information on the Endowment Fund, please contact our Endowment Chairs –John Kourakos at johnkourakos@ gmail.com and Mike Brocato at mikejbrocato@gmail.com
We greatly appreciate your support! John Kourakos & Mike Brocato BHCF Endowment Co-Chairs

Women”
An epic tale of a nation divided. “Women can be heroes.” When 20-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in idyllic Southern California and sheltered by conservative parents, she has prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten.

ON THE GREENS: NORTH COURSE REGRASSING
e are well underway on the North Course regrassing and it’s wonderful to see this project, nearly three years in the making, as it comes to fruition.
In 2021, Berkeley Hall had just finished the regrass of the South Course fairways and was moving forward on the North Course regrass scheduled for the following year. Rather than proceed on this timetable, we focused on improving the drainage system’s
efficiency through implementation of different cultural practices and changing the physical properties of the soil.
We’re very proud of how our team has worked together to make this project such a success!
–Adam Miller
With the irrigation and greens in good shape, we then developed the North Course project, regrassing the fairways to a new, enhanced bermudagrass variety.
With the completion of the successful South Course aeration this past June, we moved onto the North Course.
On the North Course, our project is in full swing, as you’ve seen in recent videos and communications. With fraze mowing and sodding going well, our goal is to lay 12 truckloads or 100,000+ sq. ft of sod/day. The bunker work is also progressing very well. We have completed holes 2 and 3 and work continues throughout the property.
We think you’ll enjoy the clean, native look around the tees, which will increase playability and pace of play and open the beautifully sculpted terrain of the North Course.
Come fall, we look forward to welcoming you back to a refreshed and refined North Course experience.

mmett Patterson started his day on the course for some morning golf on February 21st, on what seemed a usual day. But he wasn’t feeling well when he got home and told his wife Karyn he thought they should go to the hospital. They headed to Coastal Carolina, and from there to Hilton Head Hospital.
Emmett he was a good candidate to work with Chris. Sidenote: And while here, he fell in love with Berkeley Hall, so he and wife Barbara purchased a cottage and now divide their time between BHC and PA.
As Emmett began his 10-session therapy, he said his first step was mentally, asking, “Am I ok to do
I’m the Luckiest Man in the World – Life is Good.
In this life changing moment, Emmet’s heart stopped. The heart attack itself was a somewhat routine fix with a stent, but with CPR administered for nearly 5 minutes, he suffered cracked ribs, sternum, and damage to cartilage. After a five-day stay he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility, when his doctor flew from Pennsylvania to see him. “He’s a good friend of mine, Dr. Kurt Thomas, and Karyn and he agreed we had to get me active again,” shares Emmett.
Dr. Thomas came down twice to check on him. During that time, he went over and spoke with Dr. Chris Martinelli, PT, DPT, at the Fitness Center about a cardiac rehab program for Emmett. He then told

this, is my heart able to do it? But Dr. Chris was exceptional, he had so much empathy,” says Emmett. “He was encouraging, patient and thorough, and after my first rehab session, I felt confident I’d be able to get back to my daily routines. He helped me overcome my fear and reassured me I’d be golfing soon –and now I am! Just the fact he is right here, I could ride my golf cart over, is incredible. He is such an asset to BHC.”
“Emmett is literally a walking miracle,” says Dr. Chris Martinelli, PT, DPT. “His heart stopped for nearly five minutes. And Dr. Thomas, he’s only here part time and for him to trust me to provide the highest quality of care in Berkeley Hall is pretty remarkable. To get Emmett’s strength and endurance back up, help heal his ribs, we worked on a lot of different mobility and strength exercises that promoted good tissue healing. And we restored his range of motion so he could get back on the course.”
These days Emmett and Karyn can often be found at the Club, as Emmett retired last year following a lengthy career with McDonalds. With nine grandchildren between them, they come for a month to six weeks at time. “Everyone here is so positive and friendly, it’s such a
good place to be. Just 10 weeks after the heart attack, I was back to my life – golfing, working out, and living life,” says Emmett. “I’m here at the Learning Center, on the range and life is good. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
