SENIOR CENTER SPECIAL FRIDAY LUNCH Friday, September 20 - 12 pm

Sponsored by Oakdale Pharmacy Seniors come and enjoy a special lunch thanks to Oakdale Pharmacy. Following a free drawing, 10 lucky seniors will receive gift certificates from Oakdale Pharmacy. Purchase your tickets at the hospitality desk at the Senior Center. Cost is $2, tickets are limited to two per person, no take-outs, no refunds and there are 100 tickets avaiable.

SENIOR CENTER TALENT SHOW Friday, October 11 - 6:30 pm Wanted! Talented people or people who are just plain entertaining to sign-up and perform at the Oakdale Senior Center Talent Show. STANISLAUS COUNTY HICAP MEDICARE ADVANTAGE FORUM Tuesday, October 29 1 pm to 3:30 pm Medicare’s fall open enrollment is October 15th through December 7th. This is the time people with Medicare may enroll in a drug plan, review their health care and drug coverage, and make changes. The Stanislaus County HICAP is hosting a Medicare Advantage Forum at the Oakdale Senior Center for Medicare recipients to learn about the changes coming for 2014 premiums and benefits offered by the plans in Stanislaus County. They anticipate as many as seven companies will participate at the forum. Join us to learn more.

QUILT RAFFLE

Two flu shot clinics will be held at the Senior Center this year provided by the two local Rite Aid Pharmacies.

Purchase tickets to win a beautiful quilt created by Audrey Finley, who attends the Wednesday Craft Class and makes many other items that are sold at the Senior Center. The quilt is now on display at the Senior Center, all the proceeds go to the Senior Center. Tickets are one $1 or six for $5. The drawing will be held at the Craft Boutique on November 2.

LINDA’S LINES Thank You: Many thanks to Wally for providing the ice cream for the July Ice Cream Social through a donation from Foster Farms, and Costless who provided us with 100 Bananas. Wally’s Granddaughter, Kim, even attended to help her Grandfather scoop ice cream. Also thanks to Norma Deklinski who collected tickets and Fern Rowley and Lorrie Schack who helped out. We must not forget the Oakdale Community Band and Singing Seniors who entertained us with Patriotic Music, job well done everyone!

WANTED RELIABLE VOLUNTEERS TO MANAGE MONTHLY SUNDAY DANCE AT SENIOR CENTER We have received many requests on bring back a Sunday afternoon dance to the Senior Center. The only thing keeping from this happening is volunteers to manage the dance. Responsibilities are; opening and closing the building, set-up and clean-up collecting money, making coffee and punch, and taking care of issues as they arise. If interested contact Linda Royalty at 845-3567.

SUNSHINE LADY If you know someone who participates at the senior center and needs a little pick-me-up because they have been ill, in the hospital, or just lost a loved one, please contact the Hospitality Desk at 845-3566 and we will notify our Sunshine Lady, Rosemary Robertson. Rosemary also works on Mondays from 8 am to 10:30 am at the Hospitality Desk if you would like to contact her directly. Just a simple note in a card will make someone’s day a little bit brighter.

UPCOMING EVENTS CRAFT BOUTIQUE & ART SHOW Saturday, November 2 - 9 am to 3 pm The Senior Center will be having its 13th Annual Craft Boutique and Art Show featuring artists from our art classes displaying their work. Come and shop for the Holiday Season, admire the art work and enjoy a soup lunch prepared by the Community United Methodist Church Women’s Group. Any club, service group or individual can rent a 10foot table for $40. CRAFTS MUST BE HOME MADE AND BAKED GOODS MUST BE PREPARED IN A CERTIFIED KITCHEN. You do not have to be a senior to rent a table. You can register at the Senior Center. For more information contact Linda Royalty at 845-3567.

SENIOR RESOURCE FAIRE Tuesday, November 19 - 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Plan on attending the Annual Senior Resource Faire at the Senior Center sponsored by CareMore. There will be booths of various local vendors for tips on health care, senior resources, speakers, refreshments, raffle drawings, giveaways and more!!

The Saint Matthias Anglican Church in Oakdale has started a new ministry for Oakdale seniors in need of transportation to the grocery store, local appointments, or errands. Oak Valley Hospital District Community Education Classes & Support Group ALZHEIMER’S/GRIEVING SUPPORT GROUP Oak Valley Hospital District is happy to sponsor an Alzheimer’s/Grieving Support Group at the Gladys Lemmon’s Senior Center. This support group will occur every 4th Monday of the month from 9am to 10am. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, September 23rd from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. There will be a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association who will discuss the stages of Alzheimer’s as well as answer any questions that you have about this disease. The Alzheimer's Association is the most trusted resource for reliable information, education, referral and support to millions of patients and family members who are affected by this disease. So come, learn and enjoy the refreshments that will be served. For questions regarding the Alzheimer’s/Grieving Support Group please call Barbara at 848-5327.

Nutritional Awareness Thursday, September 19th at 10 am This presentation will be provided by Oak Valley Hospital’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Diane Alcorn. The presentation will not only help you explore your current intake of foods and meal pattern but invite you to make nutrient dense choices. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains foods with phytochemicals and other cancer preventative properties will be discussed. Tips for achieving a healthy weight and healthy cooking ideas will also be presented. Come join in to get the latest information on what foods to include in your daily diet.

AARP Driver Safety Program Wednesday and Thursday - November 6 & 7 - 8:30 am to 12:30 pm At the OVHD Medical Plaza – 1425 West H Street at Ash Avenue, Royal Oak Room An eight-hour classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older. The class is intended to refine participants’ driving skills and enhance understanding of age-related changes that can affect skills and abilities. Completion of the course may qualify participants for an auto insurance premium reduction. Class size is limited. Fees are $12.00 for members and $14.00 for nonmembers. (Make checks payable to AARP.) Free blood pressure checks on the second Monday of each month from 10 am to 12:30 pm,. (September 9 & October 14) are provided by Provident Care.

A Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program representative is available at the Senior Center on the first Friday of every month from 9 am to 1 pm. Appointments are available by calling 845-3566.

Having your blood pressure checked regularly is important. It tells you how healthy you are and if you are facing a decline in your health. Clinical trials demonstrate that people who maintain blood pressures within particular pressure ranges have much better long term cardiovascular health.

BASIC SPANISH Wednesdays - 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Widowed Person Support Group meets at the Oakdale Senior Center the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. WPS meetings for newly bereaved and for those who feel in need of counseling are at 6:30 pm, with General Group at 7:00 pm. At these meetings there are many interesting speakers from the community, travel, video evenings, crafts, and great fellowship.

Class instructor is Ray Winders It’s never too late to learn a second language.

COMPUTER CLASSES Wednesdays - 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Classes are half-hour periods. The class are for all levels and will focus on your needs. Register at the Senior Center hospitality desk.

Come and join us the 1st Saturday of each month for breakfast at 9:00 am and dinner on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at different locations.

EXCURSION INTO THE WORLD OF WATERCOLOR

Wednesdays - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Visit this group and join in on the fun. Bring your own project or learn a new technique. This group has been making all sorts of items and selling them to raise money for the Senior Center.

Fridays - 9 am to 12 pm Join Chloe Fonda and learn how to use the palate to bring to paper the vibrant hues and subtle variations of natural color and light which delight the eye and move the mind and heart. Class size is limited to seven per class. This class is open to all regardless of training or experience. Artists must furnish their own materials with direction from Chloe. Fees are $5 per class. If this piques your creative interest, for more information and what materials you will need call Chloe at 847-4062 prior to the class.

FRIDAY MOVIE MATINEE Join other movie goers at the Senior Center on Fridays at 1:15 pm in the Conference Room. Bring your own drinks, and we will provide the popcorn. Movies will be posted Monday prior to showing. 6
